Dawes & Bahamas Live Stream Review: 11/15, Mandolin
Tumblr media
BY JORDAN MAINZER
On their latest album Misadventures of Doomscroller (Rounder), Dawes finally stepped out of their comfort zone. With longtime collaborator Jonathan Wilson in the producer’s chair, the Los Angeles band ditched their trademark Laurel Canyon-inspired sound for longer, more experimental rock songs. Fittingly, they tackled everything from age-old tales of political control in a world of tyrants to new school themes of social media addiction. The proggy nature of the music fit the concept-heavy lyrics.
As if the about-face of Doomscroller wasn’t enough, Dawes decided to further shake things up with their recent tour with Bahamas, the project of Canadian singer-songwriter Afie Jurvanen. Throughout September, the two acts backed each other, even singing each other’s songs. Last Tuesday via Mandolin, they presented a stream of their concert from the Englert Theatre in Iowa City. At first, even older Dawes songs, stretched out to languid jam sessions, presented a clear contrast to Bahamas’ efficient pop. Jurvanen’s songs represented a welcome change of pace between ripping, tempo-changing Dawes tunes like “Someone Else’s Cafe / Doomscroller Tries to Relax” and “Most People”. Still, they contributed to each other. Jurvanen’s thrilling guitar solos bolstered Taylor Goldsmith’s urgent vocals, Lee Pardini’s smooth keyboards, and Griffin Goldsmith’s unexpectedly stadium-sized drums. On Bahamas songs like “Own Alone” or the snappy funk of “All The Time”, the Dawes folks offered up strong instrumental and vocal harmonies, guitars in sync before Jurvanen unveiled his terrifically prickly lines.
What was perhaps even more notable, though, was the difference in sentiment between the songs of the two acts. Take a Doomscroller song like “Everything Is Permanent”, introduced by Taylor as “our collective brains melting together.” A choogle with a mid-song breakdown and proggy keyboard solo, dipping to silence and elevating back, it ends with the refrain, “Did you really need to cry or be seen crying?” It’s a lukewarm take on social media performance, some Steely Dan cynicism for the modern age to go along with Taylor’s Becker-esque guitars. It couldn’t be farther in mood than Bahamas’ “Way With Words”, a smooth soulful keyboard-heavy tune with a heart of gold, or “Opening Act (The Shooby Dooby Song)”, wherein Jurvanen reflects on all the time he spent opening for other bands and learning from his own mistakes. (For what it’s worth, Doomscroller’s “playing in the band” song “Ghost in the Machine”, which Dawes didn’t perform, could be “Opening Act”’s sibling.) During “Opening Act”, Jurvanen goofily ad-libbed a semi-introduction to Dawes, “Taylor on my left and Trevor [Menear] on my right / I just remember to put away all the Fenders and just let Lee loose.” Real jam band lore should someone have been taping.
At a certain point towards the end of the concert--probably Bahamas’ “Trick To Happy”--I couldn’t help but think that as much as I enjoyed how much each band bolstered the other’s songs, that even if you were dropped in not knowing either one prior, and even if they weren’t alternating, you’d be able to tell whose song was whose. Ingeniously, however, and intentional or not, they then played two songs in a row that bucked the trend. Dawes’ “Roll With The Punches” sported a Bahamas-like strut, while Bahamas’ gentle “Lost in the Light” embodied the scratchiness of the earliest Dawes records. And their encore performance of Bahamas’ “Stronger Than That” personified both bands, Jurvanen’s inherent hopefulness combined with Dawes’ skyward melodies. All in all, it was the third time Dawes surprised me this year. Perhaps only a fool would say this, but Dawes’ concert with Bahamas exemplified a band in their second decade of existence growing as much as ever.

Snake-handling.
“I do this for the absurdity.” Co-stars Alice Englert and Thomas Mann tell us about snake-handling, cycles of fear and shame, and their new film Them That Follow.
Britt Poulton and Dan Madison Savage’s moody new film Them That Follow (which they wrote and directed together) takes place in a world rarely glimpsed in cinema—that of a serpent-worshipping religious community deep in the Appalachian mountains.
In certain Pentecostal off-shoots, worshippers bring venomous snakes into their churches, and prove their faith by handling them during services, relying upon God to ensure they won’t get bitten. The great Walton Goggins (The Hateful Eight) plays Lemuel, the pastor of one such sect, and Alice Englert (Beautiful Creatures) co-stars as his daughter Mara, who is torn between her familial religious obligations and the lure of the outside world.
They are surrounded by a heavyweight supporting cast that includes Oscar-winner Olivia Colman (The Favourite), Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart), Lewis Pullman (Bad Times at the El Royale) and Thomas Mann (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl), who plays Mara’s best friend/romantic interest Augie, someone who rejects his community’s snake-handling.
Them That Follow is “so quiet and grounded it almost negates the evil that lies beneath the surface”, writes Letterboxd member Wood, while Karsten Runquist urges viewers to look past the slow initial build-up “because the second half is near perfect. Amazing performances from literally everyone (protect Olivia Colman at all costs) and just some great-looking cinematography”.
The snakes might prove difficult for some film lovers to get around, as SlasherReviews warns: “Sometimes you have to put your life on the line to be a fan. As someone who [has] Ophidiophobia (fear of snakes) this was one of the most difficult films I have ever sat through. I cried. I grabbed my neighbor’s arm. A fantastic film that I will 100% never watch again.” Tyler agrees that the snake content is “horrifying, but that’s not the main focus. The focus is on characters…”.
Following the film’s screening at SXSW earlier this year, Letterboxd had a quick catch-up with actors Alice Englert and Thomas Mann.
Tumblr media
Alice Englert as Mara in ‘Them That Follow’.
When did you first hear about snake-handling? Alice Englert (Mara): For me it was this film. I hadn’t heard about it before I read the script. It made a dramatic and poetic sense to me in some way.
Thomas Mann (Augie): I think I saw like, a Dateline thing at one point. Just like passing through the channels and I saw it. When I saw the script I was like “I feel like I’ve heard about this”, but nothing more than that. I researched it once I read the script.
What did Britt and Dan say to you about how they wanted to approach this pretty obscure topic? AE: I think they wanted to try and create a portrait that felt respectful and as unbiased as possible, and definitely to tell a story that was about the humanity of it. And the connection.
TM: It’s so easy to [say], “Oh it’s the snake movie” but it’s not really about that. It could be about anything or any strong belief that you don’t agree with. So I think it’s kind of a placeholder for a lot of different things that are going on in people’s lives right now. Snakes are just an example…
AE: …of extremity.
TM: Yeah. Or of the definitive yes or no, black or white, a snake bites you or it doesn’t. You're either with God or you’re not. There’s no nuance to the whole thing. And I think that’s a problem.
Tumblr media
Thomas Mann in ‘Them That Follow’.
Did you have any exposure to this world in prepping for the film? TM: We drove to a Pentecostal church one weekend.
AE: We went on Pastor Appreciation Day. They were apologizing because it wasn’t a usual day.
TM: This wasn’t a snake-handling church.
AE: It’s illegal everywhere in America, except for West Virginia. You can handle snakes in West Virginia. It’s really hard to go to those churches. Also it’s really hard for a film production to be okay about letting their actors go.
TM: We thought about going to one, but our producer told us we couldn’t.
AE: I also read about it in a book called Salvation on Sand Mountain by Dennis Covington, which is a fantastic book and everyone should read it. It’s really interesting. It’s a journal, so it’s a non-fiction account of his time that he spent with these snake-handling communities.
Tumblr media
Walton Goggins takes aim in ‘Them That Follow’.
Do you feel like you’ve come to understand what people might get from this ritual? TM: That’s like step one when you read a script like this. It’s like, okay, why the fuck are they doing this? And that’s what you try to get to the bottom of. And it’s something that’s ingrained in you.
AE: Humanity wanting to test itself is very universal and I get that totally, that wanting to kind of face what you fear is the most primal journey that you have, so I absolutely get their perspective. But I’m not gonna do it.
TM: Same here. I understand that they feel they have no choice, they feel like this is the only way.
AE: I also understand that this isn’t how I feel and want to live my life, but there are a lot of people who feel as though you have to be certain, and that being uncertain hides the truth in you. Certainty in faith allows you to journey to your place of realization and I don’t agree with that. I think you should be able to question everything as much as you possibly want. I don’t think nature is made with the rules that we imagined.
Was it challenging to get past the inherent ridiculousness of snake-handling while acting in this film? TM: Yeah and that’s what was kind of the fun part. Like, you go up to the snake and you look at the snake, like the snake holds all the power and you’re subordinate to it.
AE: Yeah of course. We’re actors, we’ve done fantasy films. Letting go of the absurdity, we have to do it.
Tumblr media
Olivia Colman and Kaitlyn Dever in ‘Them That Follow’.
TM: To see Jim [Gaffigan] and Olivia [Colman] together, the opening church scenes. You just need people to commit or otherwise the audience is not gonna believe it. And you have to make it make sense for you too.
AE: I do this for the absurdity.
TM: Same here, the absurd stuff in this movie was really absurd and that’s always better for me.
Mara is torn between her various obligations. Alice, could you relate to that? AE: I related to the pressure that I felt to perform as a good girl or a nice girl or as a human being that’s presentable and the realization that that’s not the journey I want to go on anymore: how to be appropriate for other people. I don’t want to go on that journey anymore, I don’t think it leads anywhere that is deep or wise I think it just leads in circles and into a fear/shame cycle and I’m sick of it. I’m sick of the abyss of fitting in and I definitely relate to that for Mara, the stress of it.
‘Them That Follow’ is playing in select US cinemas from August 2. Comments have been edited for length and clarity.

For the week of 22 July 2019
Quick Bits:
A Walk Through Hell #12 concludes what has been an excellent horror tale from Garth Ennis, Goran Sudžuka, Ive Svorcina, and Rob Steen with another trip into existential terror as we’re given a glimpse of what this is all about and what’s coming.
| Published by AfterShock
Tumblr media
Action Comics #1013 keeps a lot of plates spinning as it works through elements of “Year of the Villain”, Event Leviathan, the ongoing Invisible Mafia story thread, and the Rose and Thorn revival. It’s kind of impressive as to how it remains entertaining and engrossing with as much going on.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Age of Conan: Bêlit #5 is another ending this week, as we finish off Bêlit’s coming of age origin story, as she confronts the Stygian priest and lays claim to her title of Queen of the Black Coast. Great art from Kate Niemczyk, Scott Hanna, Andrea Di Vito, and Jason Keith.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Amazing Spider-Man #26 introduces us to the new Sinister Syndicate fully as they plan an attack on Boomerang. It’s kind of funny to see him still getting into trouble even now that he’s trying to stay legit. Great art from Kev Walker and Laura Martin.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Ascender #4 gives us a few surprises in the fight between the vampires and the resistance. The grey washes, with mixes of red, from Dustin Nguyen on the vampire’s throneworld is very impressive.

Tumblr media
Batgirl #37 launches the new creative team of Cecil Castellucci, Carmine Di Giandomenico, Jordie Bellaire, and AndWorld Design with part one of “Oracle Rising”. There’s a nice battle with Killer Moth, emphasizing what some villains are doing in order to try to get noticed by Luthor to receive the offer, while playing up the expense that goes into crimefighting. Also, the Terrible Trio unleash something probably not too good.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Dark Red #5 concludes the first arc as Chip and Evie try to fight off an army of Nazi vampires. It’s good, with some nice funny moments. Great art from Corin Howell and Mark Englert.
| Published by AfterShock
Tumblr media
Detective Comics #1008 is a straight-forward single issue story of Batman and Joker at the circus from Peter J. Tomasi, Doug Mahnke, Jaime Mendoza, Dave Baron, and Rob Leigh. It’s a refreshing change of pace from the extended arcs, even as it sets up a new threat in the “Year of the Villain” offering.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Dial H for Hero #5 gets a little meta as we dive into the Multiverse, the Heroverse, and the Bleed from Sam Humphries, Joe Quinones, Scott Hanna, Jordan Gibson, and Dave Sharpe. The use of breaking through panels, reproductions of old comics scenes, and a variation of styles just deliver phenomenal storytelling.
| Published by DC Comics / Wonder Comics
Tumblr media
Dungeons & Dragons: A Darkened Wish #2 continues to fill in the backstory of the adventurers’ time with the White Sails, introducing us to the pitfalls that harried them, before giving more hints in the present of the nightmare that tore them apart. B. Dave Walters, Tess Fowler, Jay Fotos, and Neil Uyetake are delivering an entertaining fantasy tale here.

Tumblr media
Fearless #1 is a new three-issue anthology mini-series spotlighting a number of the women of Marvel, both characters and creative talent. This first issue leads off with a continuing lead feature from Seanan McGuire, Claire Roe, Rachelle Rosenberg, and Janice Chiang, as Sue Richards, Carol Danvers, and Storm prepare to visit a girls camp as motivational speakers. There’s also an entertaining Mille the Model back-up from Leah Williams, Nina Vakueva, Rosenberg, and Chiang. And a very funny Jessica Jones story from the Captain Marvel team of Kelly Thompson, Carmen Carnero, Tamra Bonvillain, with Chiang. Though short, that last story is pretty much worth the price of the issue alone.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Five Years #3 sees Tambi meet with Ivy and Julie to discuss that various nations around the world are dangerously developing Phi-alloy technology. Also a surprise appearance of people we thought were out. Great art as always from Terry Moore.
| Published by Abstract Studio
Tumblr media
The Flash #75 delivers three stories for this extra-sized anniversary issue. The lead concludes the “Year One” arc. This is some of the best art that I have ever seen from Howard Porter, he and Hi-Fi just deliver amazing artwork here. There are also two back-ups, one hinting at things to come in the future for Barry and the other tying in to “Year of the Villain” as Captain Cold receives Luthor’s offer.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Guardians of the Galaxy #7 begins the second arc, “Faithless”, from Donny Cates, Cory Smith, David Curiel, and Cory Petit. It really introduces us to the new Universal Church of Truth as they take out an entire squadron of the Nova Corps and then worse things happen as the Guardians go off to investigate. I love the name for the Guardians’ new ship and that final page is one hell of a shock.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
History of the Marvel Universe #1 is an interesting project from Mark Waid, Javier Rodríguez, Álvaro López, and Joe Caramagna. It’s framed as Galactus telling Franklin Richards (at least I think that’s Franklin Richards) the history of the universe before it dies and the next is reborn. As expected, it’s dry facts, but it’s fascinating in how it’s comprehensively presented and the artwork from Rodríguez and López is jaw-dropping gorgeous. There are also annotations in the back to show where these events come from. It’s well put together and I highly recommended it to die-hard Marvel fans.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Invisible Kingdom #5 concludes the first arc with an almost entirely one-sided battle between the Sun Dog and a Lux battleship. G. Willow Wilson, Christian Ward, and Sal Cipriano elevate the tension nicely through this issue and give a few surprises when everything seems grim and it looks like the end.
| Published by Dark Horse / Berger Books
Tumblr media
Killer Groove #3 wonderfully showcases one of Jackie’s cases as it intertwines with the music scene and criminal underworld. Ollie Masters, Eoin Marron, Jordie Bellaire, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou are doing a nice job with this series of crafting one larger story out of many separate smaller tales.
| Published by AfterShock
Tumblr media
Lazarus: Risen #2 is another dense read. The series has always been hefty, but this new format has elevated things further, doubling up comics content and adding a prose short story, the letters pages, and extra content like gaming material and the usual in-world advertisements. I’m loving it. Greg Rucka, Michael Lark, Tyler Boss, Santi Arcas, Simon Bowland, Adam Christopher, and Crystal Frasier are definitely giving you your money’s worth and more here. Excellent comics content as the war between Carlyle and Morray/D’Souza heats up.

Marvels: Epilogue is a short, but sweet, coda to the Marvels series from Kurt Busiek, Alex Ross, John Roshell, and Richard Starkings. It spotlights events from X-Men #98 through the eyes of Phil Sheldon and his daughters, capturing some of the awe, wonder, and terror that Sheldon experienced during the main series. The book is filled out with an interview with Busiek and Ross on their experience with the series and what it’s like to look back on it 25 years later, as well as interviews with the editors who worked on the book.

Psi-Lords #2 continues to investigate these four captives, changed for whatever reason by the Psi-Lords, and the habitat of their prison. An interesting jail hierarchy of gangs is revealed and a bit of a memory of the four’s lives before being captured. Gorgeous art from Renato Guedes.

Star Pig #1 is weird. Very weird. Delilah S. Dawson, Francesco Gaston, Sebastian Cheng, and Shawn Lee give us the story of a kid on her way to space camp whose ship is struck and destroyed by an asteroid, saved by a space pig and a scavenger energy ball. It’s probably one of the more unique tales I’ve seen in a while.

Tumblr media
Sword Master #1, like Aero before it, features two stories. In the first, Greg Pak adapts into English a tale from Shuizhu and Gunji of the titular hero, Lin Lie, and his quest to find his missing father. It’s an interesting start and the artwork from Gunji is gorgeous. The back up original story pairs Shang-Chi up with Lin in a story from Greg Pak, Ario Anindito, Rachelle Rosenberg, and Travis Lanham. It follows up on their appearance in the New Agents of Atlas tie-in to “War of the Realms” and presents an interesting antagonist on their trail.

Tumblr media
Valkyrie #1 is a wonderful debut from Jason Aaron, Al Ewing, CAFU, Jesus Aburtov, and Joe Sabino. We get some continued supporting cast from Jane Foster’s time as Thor, although with a new status quo, and an interesting hook in trying to track down Dragonfang, the former Valkyrie’s sword. The art from CAFU and Aburtov is beautiful.

Warlord of Mars Attacks #2 continues this crossover of John Carter and Mars Attacks. It’s interesting how it incorporates Edgar Rice Burroughs’ stories as actual things in this world and explains how Mars as a dead planet and one as teeming with life as Barsoom could exist simultaneously.

The Weatherman Vol. 2 #2 gives us more of a look at the nightmare that has consumed Earth as the crew attempt to find the doctor who might be able to fix everything. It goes about as well as could be expected. The monster designs and execution from Nathan Fox and Moreno Dinisio are incredible.

Web of Venom: Funeral Pyre #1 is another one-shot catching up on the wider world of Venom as we barrel headlong into Absolute Carnage. Cullen Bunn, Joshua Cassara, Alberto Alburquerque, Jay David Ramos, and Clayton Cowles give us a great story checking in with Andi Benton, the former Mania and occasional sidekick to Flash Thompson’s Venom.

Wonder Woman #75 continues “Return of the Amazons” from G. Willow Wilson, Xermanico, Jesus Merino, Vicente Cifuentes, Romulo Fajardo Jr., and Pat Brosseau. This arc basically brings Wilson’s run around full circle to deal with some of the elements that kicked off her first issue as Diana faces off against Grail. Some really nice double page spreads with border art from Xermanico.

To celebrate and honor the fifth and final season of Breaking Bad, 16 of the top artists and graphic designers were commissioned to create screenprints depicting some of the series' most memorable scenes, characters, and shocking moments for Gallery1988 and its Breaking Bad Art Show in 2012. While these limited edition prints sold out almost instantly upon their release, I’ve been able to acquire many of them over the years. 🖼️
“The White Residence” by Mark Englert is a 12” x 36” print that is signed and numbered and had a run size of 300 pieces (with only 200 made available to the public). It's a simple image, but one full of references to the show, depicting the home of Walter, Skyler, and Walter Jr. in sunny New Mexico. After a lot of searching, I’m very excited to add this hard-to-find artwork to my collection!

[TASK 028: MAGIC] ✨✨
There’s a masterlist below compiled of over 100+ faceclaims with magical resources categorised by gender with their ethnicity denoted if there was a reliable source. If you want want an extra challenge use random.org to pick a random number! Of course everything listed below are just suggestions and you can pick whichever character or whichever project you desire.
Any questions can be sent here and all tutorials have been linked below the cut for ease of access! REMEMBER to tag your resources with #TASKSWEEKLY and we will reblog them onto the main! This task can be tagged with whatever you want but if you want us to see it please be sure that our tag is the first five tags!
THE TASK
STEP 1: Decide on a FC you wish to create resources for! You can always do more than one but who are you starting with? There are links to masterlists you can use in order to find them and if you want help, just send us a message and we can pick one for you at random!
STEP 2: Pick what you want to create! You can obviously do more than one thing, but what do you want to start off with? Screencaps, RP icons, GIF packs, masterlists, PNG’s, fancasts, alternative FC’s - LITERALLY anything you desire!
STEP 3: Look back on tasks that we have created previously for tutorials on the thing you are creating unless you have whatever it is you are doing mastered - then of course feel free to just get on and do it. :)
STEP 4: Upload and tag with #TASKSWEEKLY! If you didn’t use your own screencaps/images make sure to credit where you got them from as we will not reblog packs which do not credit caps or original gifs from the original maker.
SOME ADVICE FROM US:
Stumped for ideas? Maybe make some faceless magical resources! A masterlist or graphic of your favourite faceclaims you’d like to see used for muses with magical powers. Masterlist of quotes and lyrics relating to magic that can be used for starters, thread titles or tags. Guides on different practices of magic. BE CREATIVE!

Loeb gewinnt chaotische Etappe – Peterhansel führt
5. Etappe: Franzose feiert zweiten Tageserfolg

Januar in Argentiniens Hauptstadt Buenos Aires.
5. Etappe Tupiza/Bolivien – Oruro/Bolivien (447,0 Prüfungs-km/692,0 km)
1. Sebastien Loeb/Daniel Elena – Peugeot 2:24:03 Std.; 2. Nani Roma/Alex Haro Bravo (Spanien) – Toyota +44; 3. Stéphane Peterhansel/Jean Paul Cottret (Frankreich) – Peugeot +1:31; 4. Cyril Despres/David Castera (Frankreich) – Peugeot +10:33; 5. Romain Dumas/Alain Guehennec (Frankreich) – Peugeot +11:55; 6. Conrad Rautenbach/Robert Howie (Zimbabwe/Südafrika) – Toyota +16:42; 7. Eric Bernard/Alexandre Vigneau (Frankreich) – Buggy +18:08; 8. Orlando Terranova/Andreas Schulz (Argentinien/Freital) – Mini +21:51; 9. Jakub Przygonski/Tom Colsoul (Polen/Belgien) – Mini +28:59; 10. Giniel De Villiers/Dirk Von Zitzewitz (Südafrika/Deutschland) – Toyota +29:51; … 24. Stephan Schott/Paulo Fiuza (Deutschland/Portugal) – Mini +1:04:41; 50. Thomas Walter Englert/Hans Paul Thiede Weiler (Deutschland/Paraguay) – Toyota +3:28:51
Gesamtwertung, Stand nach 5 von 12 Etappen
1. Stéphane Peterhansel/Jean Paul Cottret – Peugeot 14:02:58 Std.; 2. Sebastien Loeb/Daniel Elena – Peugeot +1:09; 3. Cyril Despres/David Castera – Peugeot +4:54; 4. Nani Roma/Alex Haro Bravo – Toyota +5:35; 5. Mikko Hirvonen/Michel Perin – Mini +42:21; 6. Jakub Przygonski/Tom Colsoul – Mini +59:55; 7. Orlando Terranova/Andreas Schulz – Mini +1:04:49; 8.
