Contractual Obligation
The plan went perfectly, is the thing. TMZ got the scoop, Tiktok had hundreds of reaction videos in the first few hours. They were trending on Twitter. Which was good. Steve would get his pay day, Eddie would get past the rumors and back to the good press, back to the path towards platinum records. According to the plan, Eddie would even have new ideas and inspiration for his next album.
It was only five months. Long enough for the gossips to pick it up, long enough to be a big deal, not long enough that anyone would expect Eddie to be too broken up about it.
Steve torched all his social media accounts a few hours after TMZ posted the story. He had to. The handful of messages and notifications he saw while deleting it all made his stomach flip. Once it calmed down a bit, he might make anonymous accounts again, if only so he could follow the kids and see the weird pictures of Robin's travels. Not with his own face though. Part of the agreement. Steve Harrington wasn't going to exist online as himself for a minimum of three years. That would keep anyone noticing that he got paid. It would also keep Steve from being torn apart by Eddie's fans.
It wasn't like he had to worry about money for a while. That was why he signed the contract with the PR firm. They needed to erase the memory of his slut era - capped off with photos of Eddie in a decadent orgy - show that Eddie Munson was capable of a committed relationship, and then get him single again. His sales were better when he was single, and being seen on celebrity dates was great for PR. They needed someone to play a part to make the change.
Steve's dad hadn't cut him off or thrown him out for being queer, or for how he got GNC when the mood struck. No, Richard Harrington was a proud liberal supporter, and didn't give a damn about any of that. But Steve flunked out of his degree in business at Richard's alma mater, and that was unforgivable.
So he was working days at an amazon warehouse, and overnight at a 24 hour diner in Chicago, because he needed money to keep his crappy studio. The PR team found him at the diner. Steve accepted the job and the contract without knowing who the hell Eddie Munson was. It was that much money. Steve really should have thought through the final phase of the contract before he signed. But it was almost a quarter million dollars for just under five months of work. "Work". Five months of dating a guy who permanently altered Steve's brain chemistry with his first smile.
Steve knew this was his fault. How he felt was his own fault. He wanted the money so he took the job, and he agreed to the terms. He went in with open eyes. Eddie didn't know Steve wasn't a genuine relationship. A real moment of serendipity that put them in the same place. Didn't know there was an end date inked and signed before they ever met. Steve agreed to this stupid fucking job because his parents cut him off and he wasn't used to having to budget for food and use coupons and hunt for deals to get phone service.
He may have flunked out in his junior year, but he was a business major. Steve read the contract and knew there was no getting around the financial penalty if he broke the terms. Seven fold repayment. How biblical of them.
He wasn't stupid. Eddie had the cash to cover the contract breach. And the inevitable court case over it. But Steve was stupid, and when he signed, he'd thought it wouldn't matter to either of them. Then Steve realized it mattered to him, but thought Eddie would be fine. He was a rockstar. Surrounded by friends. Endlessly laughing and happy. Eddie would get over Steve quick. It was just a couple months with some broke college drop out.
Then he saw Eddie's face three days ago when the rockstar found his boyfriend in bed with two models.
So yeah, Eddie had the cash, and maybe if Steve had told him from the start, he would have spent it, but now? Eddie didn't have a poker face. He walked into the scene set up by the PR team - Steve in bed with two peppy blonde models after standing Eddie up on a date - and Steve knew there was no way Eddie would cover anything. The truth could have helped early. Now that it was done? Telling Eddie the truth would only hurt him more.
All the stories were on Eddie's side. The firm made sure of that. Photos were already being 'found' by the gossip sites. Steve had been 'cheating' for weeks. Really had fucked both women that night to satisfy contractual obligation and to make sure Steve knew there was no fixing it. Steve had his fifteen minutes of fame, and the thing he'd be known for forever, was the guy who cheated on Eddie Munson.
His phone pinged with a message from one of the only two numbers saved to it. The way his chest soared and sank in the moment before his brain caught up was awful. Hope and fear, neither of which made sense.
Steve had deleted all of his socials. The PR firm had taken his old phone and disconnected the number. Now he had a brand new samsung, with one contact for the PR agent, and one for Robin. One was a threat, the other was a lifeline.
Robin's message was a calendar with her locations for the next month, and a link to AirFrance. It was a good idea. She was absolutely furious with him, and had been since he told her about the contract a month ago. She was still his best friend. Eddie was famous, but mostly an American celebrity. Steve could be a no one easier in Europe.
His phone, the one he handed over, had hundreds of contacts and thousands of messages and conversations across apps. Hundreds of photos of him and Eddie. Messages and voicemails and stupid jokes and memes.
This one had the default background, the default apps, and a single conversation in the messages. Robin was going to scream at him when she saw him, but she'd give him a hug first.
That was a better choice than sitting in the dark in his new apartment, which was too big, and too nice for crappy stuff they'd moved from his studio. He tapped the link she sent, and started looking for the first available flight.

How far ahead of pub day do bookstores usually receive new books? Does it differ depending on if it's a big chain or an indie?
I don't know the deets on chains, I guess their deal could be different, but I'd say more likely it differs based on the publisher, and where in the country the publisher's warehouses are located compared to where that bookstore is located.
Let's say for example the warehouse is in Pennsylvania, and they ship it out on Monday of the week prior to pub date, East Coast booksellers will get it by Tuesday or Wednesday -- West Coast booksellers will get it Thursday or Friday. If the warehouse is in Ohio, bookstores in Chicago will get it quickly, bookstores in Hawaii might not.
On-sale date is always on Tuesdays, and books usually come in to the store between two weeks to a couple days before on-sale date, in MY experience. The goal is that all the bookstores have the book before on-sale date and they generally give themselves plenty of time -- if they knew for a fact that, say, a shipment had fallen into the sea or wild animals had eaten a container full of books and things were unavoidably delayed, they would likely change the on-sale date for everyone.
SOME publishers (like Scholastic) tend to get their books out a little early, and there aren't strict lay-down dates for most titles (unless there's like, a new Dogman or Hunger Games or something) -- so whenever the book gets in to the store it can go on sale. An October 13th book that arrives October 9th, is fine for the store to sell.
SOME publishers (like Macmillan & PRH I believe?) DO have strict lay-down dates for ALL new titles, so there are stickers all over the boxes like "DO NOT PUT ON SALE UNTIL 10/13" -- they might arrive on October 9th, but they have to be kept in the back until the 13th.
If I were to go to the bookstore right now, on Sunday, I'm certain I would see a stack of books on a cart in the back that are meant to go out on Tuesday, and another little pile on a shelf with NEXT Tuesday labeled that just happened to come early, and one or two books for two Tuesdays from now that came in REAL early. And maybe a box or two will come tomorrow (Monday) that are also this Tuesday or next Tuesday ones.

GRAINS-Soybeans edge lower despite Brazilian crop downgrade CANBERRA, March 13 (Reuters) - Chicago soybean futures edged lower on Wednesday, although they hovered near one-month highs after Brazil's crop agency cut production forecasts for the country, testing speculative investors who have bet heavily on further price drop. Corn futures were flat and wheat futures edged higher, after fallen on Monday to their lowest since August 2020 amid lower Russian export prices and cancelled U.S. sales. FUNDAMENTALS The most-active soybean contract on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) Sv1 was down 0.2% at $11.93-3/4 a bushel by 0039 GMT, having hit $11.97 on Tuesday, its highest since Feb. 13. CBOT corn Cv1 was unchanged at $4.41-3/4 a bushel after climbing to $4.45 on Tuesday, its strongest since Feb. 6. Both crops, however, are down this year and fell to their lowest levels since 2020 last month. Wheat Wv1 rose 0.5% to $5.50 a bushel, not far from Monday's low of $5.24. Crop agency Conab lowered its projections for Brazil's soybean production by 2.6 million metric tons to 146.858 million metric tons and for its corn production by nearly a million tons to 112.753 million tons due to adverse weather conditions. However, plentiful Brazilian soy supply after a record harvest last year has pushed down prices, and some Brazilian soybean farmers are hoarding new crops in the hope that prices improve, a survey found. Also pushing down soy prices are expectations of a bumper Argentinian crop. Still, intense rains in Argentina are beginning to leave the soil too wet in key agricultural areas, which could also make it harder to harvest. Speculators have bet heavily on lower prices for soybeans, corn and wheat, leaving the markets vulnerable to bouts of short covering that push prices higher. Commodity funds were net buyers of CBOT soybean and corn futures on Tuesday and net even in wheat, traders said. In other crops, Ukraine's 2024 combined grain and oilseed harvest could shrink to 76.1 million metric tons from 82.6 million tons last year and 107 million tons before Russia invaded, Ukrainian grain traders union UGA said. The UGA said the 2024 harvest could include 26.3 million tons of corn, 20 million tons of wheat and 13.7 million tons of sunflower seeds. Falling Russian wheat export prices and hefty global supplies continue to pressure wheat futures and reduce the competitiveness of U.S. wheat on the global market. U.S. exporters cancelled sales of more than 504,000 metric tons of wheat destined for China within the past week. Meanwhile, Indian wheat inventories held in government warehouses dropped to 9.7 million tons, the lowest since 2017, after two straight years of low crops. MARKETS NEWS A gauge of global stocks was set to snap a two-session fall on Tuesday, rising along with Treasury yields after data showed U.S. inflation remained sticky in February, indicating the Federal Reserve could keep interest rates higher for longer than is currently expected.

26 January 2023: Man-Made, Teenage Fanclub. (2014 Merge vinyl reissue of 2005 release)
It’s been a while now, but Merge “recently” did reissues of a few Teenage Fanclub albums that didn’t get U.S. vinyl releases in their original incarnations. This and the album in my next post have been sitting in the bin at Reckless on Belmont Avenue for a long time, tempting me, but what finally sparked my purchase was Merge having a fantastic sale on their website. I think they are moving out of their current warehouse and into another, or something like that, but at any rate a selection of their stock was 50% off recently. Even with shipping costs tacked on, a deal that good is hard to pass up. (Other labels I like, such as Omnivore Recordings, constantly have sales, but the saving is erased once you pay the shipping cost.)
Teenage Fanclub is a band that took me a very long time to like at all. Even when Spin magazine named the band’s 1991 album Bandwagonesque their #1 album of the year—controversially beating out Nevermind by Nirvana—it wasn’t enough to lure me into caring. My brother became a big fan sometime thereafter, and he’d play me things on occasion, but it never grabbed me. What finally made me a fan is one of the dumber origin stories: when I heard that their 2016 album Here came in a clear-vinyl edition, I thought it was one of the cooler examples of “colored” vinyl matching the album artwork in a sensible way. I told myself that if I ever found the clear edition, I’d buy it. It took me a few years, but I finally found a copy at Wuxtry Records during a whirlwind trip to Athens, Georgia. I was glad to find it, because despite hearing about the legendary Wuxtry for 35 years I could barely find any records there that I wanted to buy.
Here was a good record, and I decided I’d buy the follow-up, 2021′s Endless Arcade. I liked those two well enough that I decided I had an interest in going backward in their catalog as well. And now, here I am. I got into the band at a weird time, for between those two albums their co-founding bassist Gerard Love quit the band after nearly 30 years.
Above are the front cover, hype sticker, and back cover. That drawing on the front is, I have been told, a rendering of the Damen Avenue platform of the Blue Line of the Chicago L train, a station I’ve been too countless hundreds of times. Apparently this was the train stop the Scottish band would get off at when they recorded this album here in town.
Below are both sides of the insert. Any doubts that the band took the Blue Line in Chicago are eradicated by the photo here: that is undeniably a picture of a Blue Line station, the platform bifurcating the Kennedy Expressway. I have driven that stretch of highway many hundreds of times. Specifically, based on the highway signs in the background, this must be the Addison station. I am guessing the band was staying somewhere near this station and training it inbound to the studio.

Ella Mai Will Bring Her ‘Heart On My Sleeve’ Album On A North American Tour

Ella Mai announced that she would be going on tour in 2023.

The R&B singer has announced dates for her “Heart on My Sleeve” tour. The 34-date trek kicks off March 31 in Wallingford, Conn. and travels across North America, with stops in New York, Atlanta, Miami, and Los Angeles, wrapping June 1 in Toronto.
The tour comes in support of her latest album Heart on My Sleeve, which was released in May. A deluxe edition is set for release on Feb. 2.
“The deluxe tracks are some of my favorite songs currently so I’m happy to be able to share them with the world,” said Ella. “I get to bring new life to a body of work that is a year old but remains very close to my heart. Likewise with the Heart On My Sleeve Tour. This is the first time I’m getting to perform some of these tracks live. It’s almost like reading your diary aloud in front of an audience, but there’s no better place for me to be vulnerable than in my music and on stage with my fans.”
This will be Ella’s third headlining tour since 2018. She most recently joined Mary J. Blige on her “Good Morning Gorgeous Tour” last fall.
Tickets go on sale Jan. 27 at 10 a.m. local time, with a pre-sale starting Jan. 25. See dates below.
