Summary:

It’s 1899 after the infamous Newsboys’ Strike in which Newsies of New York City successfully negotiated fair prices of newspapers. Tensions have finally ceased between the higher ups of the newspaper company, The New York World, and the lower employees, the Newsies, who work for them selling newspapers all across the city. You’re the leader of a smaller newspaper printing company based in Gramercy selling newspapers for the Gramercy Gazette. You love your job there but since the big strike, smaller newspaper companies are combining with bigger ones like The New York World, and you fear you might have to change neighborhoods soon. Still, you continue to lead your group of newsies and do the best to protect them out on the streets of New York City.

Prologue Part One: Another Day Carryin' the Banner

You woke up on your cot to the sound of distant church bells chiming. Being a light sleeper, you always woke up to the first church bells of the day. The sun had barely started to show its bright rays for the day but a bluish hue lit up the room. As your eyes adjusted, you could see everyone else sleeping in the close quarters you all shared. Next to you were three of your closest friends, all cuddled up in a singular bed meant to fit only one of them. No matter how uncomfortable it got, they refused to sleep anywhere else, loving the comfort that closeness offered them. A little further away, sleeping atop some blankets set atop the hard wooden floor, were some of the newer folks who joined us right after the big strike in hopes of a place with better working conditions than the factories from which they came. Against the wall, you spotted the youngest of your group, snoring loudly. She was cute as a button, only 6 years old, but was a natural at sellin’ papes. Whether they’d been there as long as you, or had just started yesterday, you considered all of them your family. You considered all Newsies to be your family but these ones was special. You’d never had anyone else to call family for as long as you could remember so you considered the Newsies yours. You didn’t care who they were or where they came from. You were just there to sell papes and be there for them. Help ‘em out whenever they need it. And stand up for them if necessary. 

You sat up on your cot, dangling your feet off so they touched the floor, and stretched your arms up to the ceiling. Another day of work and everyone was counting on you to wake them up. 

“Alright Newsies, let’s go! Another day, another dollar! Winks! Peggy! Laces! I know you three bums want an extra 5 minutes of sleep but not today!” you called out to all your Newsies. “Gramercy is gonna be awake soon so we better get a move on!” 

You always made sure to keep your neck of the woods on a tight schedule. That way you could always be on time to pick up your papes as soon as they were released from the Gramercy Gazette, or the GG as you called it, and you could beat the other boroughs to the streets to make your coin. As long as you kept to a schedule and made sure that the GG was making plenty of money to stay in business, you could ensure you are being the best leader of the Gramercy Newsies that you could possibly be. You’d worked your way up in the ranks since you started with the GG and you’d finally made it to the top… the top of the Newsie ranks, that is. But you were happy with that… for now.

Everyone started getting up and going about their morning routines, some bathing in tin wash basins, others shaving their faces, others braiding their hair up and out of their faces. You made your way out to the fire escape where you’d hung your clothes to dry the day before and grabbed a pair of trousers and a shirt. You put them on and then laced up your boots and put on your cap, backwards like you always wore it. After a little while longer, everyone else was ready to go too, and you led them all downstairs to the printing facilities to buy the day’s papes. 

Another day carryin’ the banner. With the big election coming up, you expected the papes to be full of political news stories- a topic that was thankfully more appealing than the trolley strike from a few weeks back. You quickly scanned the front of the paper and confirmed that it was some news story about a local politician trying to make his way up in the ranks and instructed everyone else to buy extra papes for the day, knowing they’d sell them easily. You’d begged one of the other newsies to teach you to read and write when you were younger- skills that most newsies did not possess- thinking that it might help you in the future. Evidently, that was a smart move. Now as their leader, you could advise the other newsies on how many papes they should buy, depending on the story on the front page. Even after the strike, knowing the GG would buy the papes back that weren’t sold, it was more of a convenience thing than anything, especially for those who were younger. 

You stepped up to the newspaper distribution window first and were faced with Mr. Dimer, a kind, older gentleman who sold you your newspapers every day.

“Right on time, y/n,” he grinned. “I can always count on you for that.” 

“I’d never be late for you, Mr. Dimer,” you smirked. 

“And you can always count on me to make sure you all start your day on a full stomach,” he said, pulling out a basket of apples from behind the counter and setting them in front of you. “Pass these out, kid.” 

“Mr. Dimer, you really didn’t have to…” you say, though you knew the old man would always buy you and the other newsies whatever you needed. 

“Take them, I insist!” he told you with a smile. 

“Thank you,” you said, nodding your head and taking the basket. You instructed the other newsies to start handing them out while you fished in your pocket for some coins. You set a few on the counter, “I’ll take five stacks please.” 

He took the coins and gave you five bundles of newspapers but you noticed a sad look in his eyes. Your eyebrows furrowed. 

“What’s the matter, eh?” you asked him quietly, leaning in so that the others couldn’t hear you. 

“I’m not supposed to say anything, but you know I love you kids. I just can’t keep anything from you,” he told you. 

“What’s the problem? Whatever it is, we can fix it. It’ll be fine,” I assured us both. 

“I’m sure you heard about it by now, kid, but since the strike, tons of newspaper companies are getting taken over by The New York World and-”

“What are you saying? Gramercy’s getting taken over by them too? We’ll still be okay though, right?”

“I’m afraid this would mean the end of the Gramercy Gazette,” he told you solemnly. 

“What…?” was all that came out. Your mind became overloaded with concern. “What does that mean for us?” 

“Well, on the bright side, you kids will have it easy. You just need to get a job in a different borough. Say, I know a couple a guys in Brooklyn! We could help set ya up there in no time,” Mr. Dimer suggested. 

“I don’t wanna go to Brooklyn, I wanna stay here,” you told him, sternly. 

“You can stay here but you’ll be out of work with the GG. Your best bet is to get on the good side of the leader of a different borough and try to get everyone to transfer with you,” he sighed. “I’m so sorry, kid. I know how much this job means to you.”  

You sighed, thinking of how hard you had all worked for the GG. Surely this couldn’t be the fault of you and your newsies. You and the others worked so hard and you were certain you did well at your job. This had to be a problem with the higher ups. 

“How long do we have left here? How long until Gramercy is shut down?” you asked.

Mr. Dimer, look away from you, not wanting to meet your gaze, “You have until the end of this week.”

Yandere Bouillabaisse

Hello lovelies! dont know if anyone missed me but now that I'm better at writing and playing FF again, I figured I would try writing another shot. If there's something you really wanna see, just dm me a request! i get the struggle of being in a niche fandom and when there's nearly 400+ characters in FF, it can be really hard to find content for a character you like. With that being said, here are some headcanons and a scenario for the food soul Bouillabaisse!

CW: Collaring, drugging, kidnapping, stealing, jealousy and general yandere tendencies. GN!reader

Bouillabaisse or “bisse” as you called him, was fond of you when he was first summoned. For the small price of 150 soul embers from the store, you had gained an eternal companion. He thought you were simply adorable, his past master attendants were powerful mages or even other food souls who wanted him for their own gain, but you were the only person who gave and asked nothing in return. For that alone, he would provide you his service.

Everything you do enchants him. Your laugh, the way you touch his face, and even the food you provide for him warm his heart. He has never met anyone so kind and generous, he tries to return the favor as best he can. Giving you all sorts of knick-knacks he picks up off the road or the beach.

He is set on following you everywhere, while this isn’t too out of the normal for Food Souls, he takes his position as your personal assistant very seriously. When shopping for groceries, he’ll often quietly tuck fruit in his bag while others aren’t looking. The idea that you have to pay for anything in this world is ridiculous. Don't they know that you're the best master attendant in the world?

You pet him in a way he's so fond of. Gently pushing back the hair that obscures his features. You wash his face before bed, tucking him in with care and preparing delicious food in the morning. He watches as you hum various songs. Flitting about the kitchen like a golden ray of sunlight, preparing a meal that you hope he will enjoy just as much as you do. He'd never known this feeling before… this is love, isn’t it?

He despises the fact that you have to toil away at your job, giving your effort to someone who will never appreciate it and only ask for more. Oh, how he wishes he could simply whisk you away, waltzing on the beaches he knows so well while he covers you in sunken treasure. Pearls complement your complexion the best, he thinks.

It's only when a belligerent man catches your fancy does he comes across the realization that he would kill for you. Bouillabaisse hates every fiber of the man's being. He was almost disturbed that such visceral hatred was able to come from his core. Baisee looms over you while he watches the man offer to take you for a beverage. Taking in every disgusting quality of the man. The conversation only lasts a few minutes at most, but the pain is forever ingrained in Bouillabaisse's heart. If he is to properly protect you from the vile instincts of others, he has to isolate you.

He's so sorry. He doesn’t mean to hurt you he promises! But spiking your drink was the only way he could knock you unconscious and whisk you away. He knows that this is the best option for the two of you, but he hates hurting you! He hates knocking you out forcefully, but he found a happy medium in the form of keeping you drugged just enough to be barely conscious. He finds you adorable like this, constantly coo’ing in awe at your inebriated form. You need his help to do everything, a situation that won't last forever, but something he quite enjoys.

When the two of you reach his homeland, he finally feels comfortable enough to let you recover. He sets you down in a big shell basin that's been padded with all sorts of fabrics and pillows.  Smiling at the fact that you look like a pretty pearl when sitting in the shell. The cave seems to be comprised of a small above-water-level portion where you can breathe comfortably, but the only exit seems to be an extremely long tunnel submerged in water. In order to leave you would need Bouillabisse’s assistance.

He holds you as you kick and scream for release from the caves. He lets a few sparkling tears fall from his eyes. He is so frustrated that you can't see the truth! That the only way you’ll truly be happy is with him, right here where he can give you everything you need.

He feeds you just a drop or two of pufferfish poison.  Just enough to keep you from accessing your magic and prevent him from doing what's right. It makes your body run hot and you struggle with physical activity, but Bouillabaisse does everything he can to provide for you.

Now that he has you all to himself, he needs to find a way to mark you. He needs to own you like you own him. While it's likely not a permanent fix, he fashioned a collar for you. Made from the thicker bones of his tail and metal embellishments. He adores dressing you up and perhaps the collar was simply the start, but ever since he wrapped it around your neck you find that he has an odd fascination with picking out your clothing within the limited selection he carried.

Your relationship with Bouillabaisse has drastically changed but it's hard to get mad when you realize most of his actions come from his almost child-like level of ignorance. He loves you and he's not afraid to say it. Perhaps with enough time or patience, you could even convince him to let you leave. Provided you pay the transportation tax in the form of kisses. <3

As Beryl changed and readied herself, she wondered one last time whether attending Ialai Sadeas as a Jasnah Kholin look-alike might be a bad idea. However, the Sadeases had an excellent reputation with the other prostitutes, and the pay Ialai’s scribe had offered was substantial, with payment up front. 

She looked in the mirror, holding her trademark diamond spherelamp, which contained the sphere she kept her illusion in. She couldn’t keep it on her clothes, for obvious reasons. The white light also allowed her clients to see her well, which was the whole point of hiring a look-alike. She made sure not to make herself look too uncannily similar. It helped that she was shorter than the princess, and a little younger. She enjoyed wearing Jasnah’s face with clients; she didn’t have to change very much physically, and stepping into the demeanour her clients wanted was often a fun change of pace.

However, most of her clients didn’t know the princess personally like the Highprincess did. That made her stomach flutter. Well, either way, she had a job to do. Head up and confident, she was granted entry into the Highprincess’ inner sanctum.

The room was rich with soft carpets and heavy tapestries, making the room feel smaller than it was. A hearth with a lit fire warmed the room, making the space feel cozy and alive. Elsewhere the room was lit by emeralds, not locked in spherelamps but open in goblets and small bowls–a sign of extravagance and self-assured confidence.

The Highprincess herself was not on the large, soft bed at the centre of the room, but in an overstuffed armchair in the corner. She gestured to Beryl to take the seat opposite her. Beryl acquiesced and placed her little diamond spherelamp on a delicate side table.

Brightness Ialai regarded her with a pleased air. “I admit I’m impressed,” she smiled. “Even down to the havah style. For a moment I thought the bitch herself had found me out. Now, to business. I assume since you accepted my price, you understand I will be asking more of you tonight.”

“Yes, Brightness,” Beryl said, inclining her head in deference. “I was told you would be interested in having me act like the Princess, and you would be spanking me. That’s perfectly acceptable to me, so long as you hit with the flat of your hand, and stick to my stomach, thighs, and ass.”

“Hm,” Brightness Ialai said, tapping her chin. “How about hair-pulling? Not hard enough to hurt, but perhaps enough to surprise.”

Beryl nodded. “Yes, Brightness, that would be fine. I would also ask no fingers or any other objects be put inside me. I have my own tools, but I was told you weren’t interested in them anyway.”

“Yes, that is correct. Although, now that I’m looking at you…” she trailed off thoughtfully.

When Beryl was in the room, sometimes clients thought to try to alter the agreement, and it seemed that Brightness Ialai was no different. 

“Can I come on you?”

An unusual request from a woman, but Beryl would take it. “So long as you provide me a wash basin afterwards. I’ll need to leave presentable.”

“Yes, you will,” Brightness Ialai said in a colder tone. “I’ll want you leaving promptly and without drawing any attention. If there is no talk of your presence here after two days, I’ll send an emerald mark. If there is any talk, I’ll never hire you again. If any rumours arise as to the nature of our contract, I’ll have you whipped.”

That raised Beryl’s eyebrows. “You won’t have to worry about that, Brightness,” she said, feeling unworried. Leaving undetected would be much easier than the Highprincess thought. “In return, of course, you’ll know that if you break any of my rules, your reputation within my network will be burned to the ground.”

Regular clients were best held in check by physical threats; merchants, threats of financial consequences. High-ranking lighteyes could only be held in check by their reputations. Brightness Ialai nodded amiably, already familiar with these standards.

She leaned forward, then, her light green eyes glittering. “You won’t have had occasion to meet Princess Jasnah, so I will tell you that she’s stuck up, judgmental, and thinks she smarter than everyone. I heard that she’ll be moving to the Shattered Plains, so I need to get this out of my system before she arrives. Act like you’re better than me, and let me wound your pride. Do you understand?”

Beryl nodded, then rose. She took a calculated risk, wanting to start her off irritated. She affected a bored, judgmental tone. “Then by all means, let’s begin, Ialai.”

Homemade Biscuits- Racetrack Higgins

(Every once in a while, I’ll post a oneshot that I’m particularly proud of writing, one that I’ve posted on Quotev or just come up with out of the blue. Feel free to request if you’d like me to write a pairing/story, and I really hope you enjoy this!)

Don’t get him wrong; Race was grateful for the nuns handing out breakfast every morning. He’d only be eating one meal a day otherwise, and the women were always so kind, trying their best to feed all of the newsies. But even considering the nuns’ generosity, there was nothing that could ever be as good as his late mother’s cooking.

    Albert glanced at Race as he stared down at the stale donut he held in his hands, raising an eyebrow. “Somethin’ wrong with it?” Albert asked, and Race shook his head.

    “Nah,” he answered, making a face as he bit into the barely-edible donut. “It’s just as vile as usual.”

    Laughing, Albert clapped him on the back. “Then can I have it?” 

    Turning to him, Race shook his head as he swallowed the food- not without some difficulty, might he add. “Hell no,” he replied, waving Albert off. “This shit’s mine. Get yer own food, beggar.”

    Rolling his eyes and chuckling, Albert walked away to chat with some of the other newsies while Race continued to stare at the half-eaten donut. If he ignored the stale outside, and the even staler inside, it almost tasted like…

    “Antonio, come along inside! La colazione è pronta!”

    Antonio glanced back at the house from where he was playing outside, chalk nearly covering his hands and clothes. Grinning, but knowing he was in for a scolding for being so messy, little Antonio ran towards the house, replying, “Sto arrivando, mammina! I’m coming!”

    “Quickly,” his mother told him as he raced inside. “And wash your hands, per favore.”

    Antonio giggled as he walked briskly to their little washbasin, the one that they’d had since they moved in for lack of a working sink. Every day, Mamma filled up the basin, and it was the children’s job to replace the water when someone used it. As the five year-old plunged his hands into the lukewarm water, he wondered which of his sisters had replaced it last.

    “Grazie, Antonio,” his mother smiled as he sat at the table. Bianca, his oldest sister at thirteen years old, smoothed out her dress and briefly checked her reflection before sitting down. The two year-old twins, Giada and Maria, joined her next, laughing up a storm as Mamma placed some plates in front of them.

   “We have more money today,” his mother commented with a smile as she handed her children each a biscuit, “so I made you children a little treat.”

    Antonio stared at the biscuit in his hands, his eyes wide but smiling as he took a bit. It was heaven, of course, just like everything else Mamma cooked. He didn’t know how she did it, with the too-little amount of ingredients she could buy and the ever-rising prices of food, but these were homemade and more perfect to the little boy than anything.

   “Grazie, Mamma!” Bianca thanked their mother as she shoved the biscuit into her mouth. Their mother watched with a mix of amusement and exasperation, gently reminding the girl to slow down when she ate before moving to wash the dishes.

   “Mammina,” Antonio called. “Are you gonna have any?”

    His mother glanced at him, smiling sadly before shaking her head. “That’s all there is, tesoro. But don’t worry, your Mamma wasn’t hungry.”

    Antonio tilted his head, frowning. “Va bene, mammina.”

   The rest of that night went like any other night, but it always stuck out in the boy’s head. For a long time, after his sisters were all dead of sickness and his mother dead of starvation to feed her children, little Antonio would remember that night.

    Homemade biscuits. His twin sisters, just two years old then, four when they were taken from the world. Himself, forced to move from his home to across the bridge, selling newspapers to earn his keep. But he still kept hope.

    Race pocketed the food, saving it for later as he ran to grab his papers, ignoring the nuns as they spoke to him.

    “It ain’t important,” he reminded himself. “They’s all gone now. What’s a biscuit mean in the grand scheme of things anyway?”

     Even so, it was nice to have a reminder, something telling him that maybe if he tried hard enough, he’d get that life back. His sisters, his mother, their little apartment in Brooklyn, there was no doubt that they were gone now.
