The soft gurgle of the stream greeted Mattea as she stirred, eyes fluttering open to the pale gold of dawn stretching through the trees.

Kili’s arms were around her—warm, safe, steady. His breath, slow and even, brushed her hair. She smiled faintly, pressing her cheek against his chest for a heartbeat longer.

But the light was growing. Morning was coming fast, and she didn’t want to wake him just because she felt grimy from the day before. Everyone had been through so much. The least she could do was clean up and be ready before the others stirred.

Carefully, she untangled herself from Kili’s embrace, easing his arm down onto the blanket so he wouldn’t wake. He shifted slightly but didn’t stir. She folded her bedroll neatly, tucking it close to the tree where they’d been sleeping, and quietly slipped away from the camp, heading toward the stream.

The earth was cool beneath her bare feet as she padded along the bank, listening to birds waking somewhere high in the canopy. The world felt so still here, so untouched. Sunlight glimmered faintly on the water’s surface. The air was crisp, scented with damp moss and wildflowers.

She didn’t realize how far she’d gone. It was so peaceful.

She knelt at the stream’s edge, letting her hands dip into the water, icy and sharp against her skin. She washed her face, her arms, letting the cold seep into her bones and ground her. For a moment, she closed her eyes, just breathing.

Footsteps crunched behind her.

She smiled softly, without turning. “Hey,” she said in a whisper, still crouched over the water. “You’re up early. I tried not to wake you…”

No response.

Her brow furrowed.

“Kili?”

A harsh laugh rang out, sharp and cruel.

Her body went cold.

She whirled around—and her stomach dropped.

Two wildmen stood just beyond the tree line, shadows draped over their leering faces.

She recognized them instantly. From the road.

The ones who’d asked for money. Who’d stared too long.

She scrambled to her feet, breath catching in her throat. “Don’t come any closer,” she snapped, trying to keep her voice steady. “I’m not alone. My people are nearby.”

They exchanged a glance—grinning.

One stepped forward. “Didn’t look like you were with anyone,” he drawled. “Just a pretty tiny little thing all alone out here.”

“Go back to camp, sweet thing,” the other sneered. “Tell your friends you wandered too far. Or maybe we’ll do the honors.”

Mattea backed away, trying to keep her footing. Her heart was pounding in her ears.

“Stay back,” she said again, louder this time. “I’m serious.”

They didn’t listen.

The moment their steps quickened, she turned and ran.

The ground was uneven, roots snaking up from the soil. Her breath came in panicked gasps as she sprinted toward the direction of camp, eyes scanning for something—anything—familiar.

A sharp crack.

Her foot caught. Pain exploded through her ankle as she fell hard onto the forest floor, a cry tearing from her throat. She hit the ground with a jolt that stole her breath. She tried to scramble up—but pain flared so white-hot through her leg that she collapsed again, sobbing out in disbelief.

She couldn’t stand. She couldn’t stand!!!

“No, no, no—” she whimpered, crawling backward through the dirt, fingers clawing at the earth.

They were coming.

The sound of their footsteps, slow and deliberate, grew louder.

She turned her face toward the trees and screamed, voice breaking.

“Kili!”

No answer.

Her chest heaved as she cried out again, louder.

“Kili! Please—!”

Still nothing.

Tears welled in her eyes. Her ankle throbbed with every beat of her heart. The men were almost on her now, their eyes gleaming with malice. They were normal human size, but compared to her now tiny frame here in Middle-Earth, they were giant.

“Don’t,” she choked out, voice barely working. “Please—don’t…”

The trees loomed around her. The light seemed farther away.

No one was coming.

Hiii so I was listening to the latest video by the youtube channel Watts the Safeword and they're talking about old leather community things and one of the guys talks about these leather dinner parties that they used to do and I *immediately* thought of your M/s fic

I dunno if it would fit in that fic specifically, but I love the idea of Armand hosting a leather dinner party in the early 80s. It was the kind of thing where a bunch of kinksters in full leather gear would have a dinner party where the subs would serve and the Doms would sit at the table and it would be very protocol based and I'm *obsessed* with this idea

Dawn crept in slow and silent, painting the sky in soft shades of lavender and gold.

The trees stood still, their shadows stretching long across the sleeping camp, where the hush of early morning wrapped everything in a fragile peace.

Fili and Jasmine were still tangled together beneath his cloak, her cheek against his chest, his arms wrapped securely around her. They hadn’t stirred once. Her breathing had evened long ago, and he, sensing the rhythm of her peace, had long since followed her into dreams.

A few paces off, Thorin sat with his back to the thick trunk of an old pine, Erika tucked gently against his side. Her head rested on his shoulder, wrapped in his fur-lined cloak, her features soft with sleep. Thorin’s eyes, usually hard and sharp even in rest, had finally closed. The faintest edge of light breaking through the branches had quieted his constant vigilance. With the sky beginning to warm, and the air calm around him, he’d allowed himself—for the briefest stretch—to drift.

All was still.

Until Kili stirred.

He blinked awake slowly, the faint light coaxing his eyes open. For a moment, he lay still on his side, rubbing sleep from his face with one hand. The camp remained hushed, everyone in the same position as the night before.

Except—

His brow furrowed.

Mattea’s bedroll was empty.

Kili sat up quickly. The spot where she had lain was neatly folded, the blanket smoothed out as if carefully tidied.

Not slept in. Not disturbed. Just… gone.

He stood, heart suddenly thudding faster, eyes scanning the quiet clearing. She wasn’t by the fire. Not at the water’s edge. Not near the trees where they’d all washed up the day before.

He moved fast now, his boots silent on the soft grass as he circled the small perimeter of the camp. Behind the boulders. Near the edge of the woods. He checked the slope toward the river. Even behind the larger trees.

Nothing.

His pace quickened. “Mattea?” he called in a low voice—urgent, but not loud enough to wake the others. “Mattea, are you up?”

Still nothing.

His chest grew tight, panic beginning to rise. She wouldn’t have gone far. She knew not to stray. And she would never just leave her bedroll like that—not without telling him. Not without waking him. She always—

He clenched his jaw, scanning the woods again.

No footprints. No broken branches. No trail of movement. No sign of a struggle, either.

It was like she’d simply… vanished.

His breath came shorter now, a bead of sweat tracing the side of his temple despite the cool morning air. His hand instinctively went to the dagger at his belt.

One more scan of the horizon.

Nothing.

He turned back toward the camp, eyes on the firelight beginning to catch in the breeze, the golden edges of dawn now pressing more fully through the trees.

He opened his mouth—about to shout.

And then he stopped.

Not yet.

One more moment. One more chance to find her. He had to be sure before he—
