Margaret “Daisy” Suckley

Margaret Suckley was an archivist at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library in Hyde Park, New York from 1941 to 1963. But she was much more than that.

“Daisy” Suckley, as she was known to friends and family, was born in Rhinebeck, New York in 1891 and grew up on Wilderstein, the family estate on the Hudson River not far from the Roosevelts’ own Springwood in Hyde Park. This was a small, rarefied world and in the ensuing decades Daisy saw sixth cousin Franklin’s rise to prominence. She eventually became one of his closest friends and confidants, sharing the good times and the bad with the country’s only four-term president. Ms. Suckley was there for Franklin in the 1920s when he was struck paralyzed from the waist down with polio, knew him during his years in Albany when he was New York governor and he became a national figure, attended the presidential inaugural in 1933 in the depths of the Great Depression, offered a discreet and comforting ear during the dark days of the Second World War when, as commander-in-chief, he made difficult and lonely decisions affecting the lives of millions around the world. Finally, Daisy was one of the inner circle present in Warm Springs, Georgia when the president died in April 1945. Roosevelt was inscrutable to most—some called him The Sphinx—but if anyone outside his immediate family knew him, it was Margaret “Daisy” Suckley.

There were perks to being Roosevelt’s close friend. The two enjoyed picnics and country drives. Both loved to dish the gossip about Washington politicos and the Hudson River Valley families they had known for decades. Daisy helped President Roosevelt design his Hyde Park retreat, Top Cottage. She enjoyed the “Children’s Hour” afternoon breaks when Roosevelt would mix cocktails for himself and his friends to unwind. There were getaways at Shangri-La, the rustic presidential retreat in Maryland’s Catoctin Mountains known today as Camp David. She attended services at Hyde Park Church with the First Family, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth when the royals visited in 1939. It was she who gave him Fala, the Scottish Terrier to whom he was so attached after receiving the pooch as a Christmas gift in 1941.

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt stood at a podium on the grounds of his family home in Hyde Park and dedicated the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library on June 30, 1941. He was still in office at the time, having won re-election to an unprecedented third (and eventually fourth) term seven months previously. Roosevelt clearly believed that libraries and archives were themselves exercises in democracy in these years when fascism was spreading around the world. Ever the optimist even as World War Two raged in Europe and the Pacific, Roosevelt declared “It seems to me that the dedication of a library is in itself an act of faith. To bring together the records of the past and to house them in buildings where they will be preserved for the use of men and women in the future, a Nation must believe in three things. It must believe in the past. It must believe in the future. It must, above all, believe in the capacity of its own people so to learn from the past that they can gain in judgment in creating their own future.” Then he quipped to the two thousand gathered about this being their one chance to see the place for free.

Roosevelt had been an unrepentant collector since his earliest boyhood days, with wide-ranging interests especially in naval history, models ships, taxidermy, philately, books on local history, political ephemera, and—probably above all—anything related to the Roosevelt clan itself. His eight-years-and-counting administration had already produced reams of material via the myriad alphabet soup New Deal agencies that had put millions of Americans to work during the Great Depression. It was becoming increasingly obvious in that Summer of 1941 that the United States would likely become entangled in the Second World War; as Roosevelt well understood, that would mean even more documents for the historical record.

Presidential repositories of various incarnations were not entirely new. George Washington had taken his papers with him back to Mount Vernon after his administration for organization. Rutherford B. Hayes, Herbert Hoover, and even Warren G. Harding had versions of them. Nora E. Cordingley (featured in a March 2018 Women of Library History post) was a librarian at Roosevelt House, essentially a de facto presidential library opened in 1923 at Theodore Roosevelt’s birthplace on Manhattan’s East 20th Street whose papers and other materials eventually moved to Harvard University’s Houghton and Widener Libraries. What was new about Franklin Roosevelt’s creation was its codification of what is today’s presidential library system. Roosevelt convened a committee of professional historians for advice and consultation, raised the private funds necessary to build the library and museum, urged Congress to pass the enabling legislation, involved leading archive and library authorities, and ultimately deeded the site to the American people via the National Archives, which itself he had signed into being in 1934.

The academic advisors, archivists, and library professionals at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library were all important, indeed crucial, to the professionalization and growth of both the Roosevelt site and what would become the National Archives and Records Administration’s Office of Presidential Libraries. However, Roosevelt understood in those early that he also needed someone within his museum and library who knew him deeply and understood the nuances of his life and long career. That is why he turned to Ms. Suckley, securing her a position as junior archivist in September 1941 just months after the opening. The library was very much a working place for the president, who kept an office there, where—unbeknownst to museum-goers on the other side of the wall—he might be going through papers with Daisy, entertaining dignitaries while she looked on, or even making decisions of consequence to the war. Ms. Suckley worked conscientiously, even lovingly, in the presidential library, going through boxes of photographs and identifying individuals, providing dates and place names that only she would know, filling in gaps in the historical record, sorting papers, and serving in ways only an intimate could. The work only expanded after President Roosevelt died and associates like Felix Frankfurter and others donated all or some of their own papers. The work also became more institutionalized and codified. Other Roosevelt aides took on increasingly important roles after the president’s death in 1945. More series of papers became available to scholars in the 1950s and 60s as the Roosevelt Era receded from current events into history. Through it all Daisy Suckley continued on for nearly two more decades until her retirement in 1963.

Margaret “Daisy” Suckley lived for twenty-eight more years after her retirement, turning her attention to the preservation of her ancestral home there on the Hudson but never forgetting Franklin. In those later years when reporters, historians, and the just plain curious curious showed up at Wilderstein and inevitably asked if there was any more to tell about her friendship with Franklin Roosevelt she always gave a wry smile and demure “No, of course there isn’t.” After her death at the age of ninety-nine in June 1991 however a trove of letters and diaries was found in an old suitcase hidden under her bed there at Wilderstein. A leading Roosevelt scholar edited and published a significant portion of the journals and correspondence in 1995 to great public interest. While it is still unclear if there was every any romantic involvement between Franklin and Daisy—as some have speculated for decades—the letters do provide a deeper, more nuanced portrayal of their relationship and show just how close the two were. Franklin Delano Roosevelt may have been The Sphinx to many, hiding his feelings behind a veneer of affability and bonhomie. To his old neighbor, distant cousin, discreet friend, loyal aid, and steadfast curator Margaret Suckley, he showed the truer, more vulnerable side of himself.

The Essential Google My Business Guide for Small and Local Business

Knowing that Google is Master of the Universe when it comes to search engine use and new customers finding your business, it is vital to understand how important your Google My Business listings are to ranking higher in Google search results.

Claiming and verifying a separate Google My Business listing for each location of your business is the first and most basic step to local search engine optimisation (SEO).

This is an easy way to ensure your business is visible and ranking in local search engine results.

Google likes to keep things in-house as much as possible, so it favours its own accurate and current business listings in local search results.

Complete and accurate Google My Business listings that keep their information up to date and get business reviews on their listings are rewarded with higher rankings.

#1 Ensure NAP is Correct on All Listings

NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone. Google wants your name on Google My Business to reflect your business’s real-world name as it is used on your storefront and is known by your customers.

Take note that they do not permit you to add extra information to your name in this field such as location (e.g. Great Smiles Dentistry – Kings Lynn), taglines, special characters or URLs. Additionally, you can’t use P.O. Boxes for your address and you should use your local phone number for each location as opposed to a call centre or toll-free number.

Remember that it is critical that your NAP not only be correct on Google My Business but consistent across the Web. So make sure you are monitoring and managing your business listings.

#2 GMB Descriptions

Descriptions used to be attached to your required Google+ account and then all of a sudden they were gone. At that time your Google My Business listings didn’t have descriptions either. Well… they are back!

How to Optimise Google My Business Descriptions

With the return of Google My Business descriptions, you should submit content describing what separates you from the competition.

Links are not allowed, but Google My Business gives you 750 characters to get your message across and optimise your Google My Business listings.

Add what makes your business unique in an overcrowded market.

Get your keywords in there, but don’t over-stuff!

Describe your products and services, especially when it isn’t clear exactly what you do from your business name.

Talk up local ties to your area to entice nearby customers.

Guidelines for Google My Business Descriptions

Published content should highlight what makes your business unique. You can use this field to provide useful information on the services and products offered. You can also describe the mission and history of your business.

You should be upfront and honest about the information provided, focusing on content that is relevant and useful to your customers to understand your business.

Content published in this field should NOT:

• Be misleading to users. Do not provide inaccurate or false information about your business or the services and products offered.

• Display low-quality, irrelevant, or distracting content. For example, misspellings, gimmicky character use, gibberish, etc.

• Focus on special promotions, prices, and offer sale. Examples of content not allowed include, “Everything on sale, -50%” and “Best doughnuts in town for £5!”

• Display links. No links of any type are allowed.

• Display offensive or inappropriate content.

#3 Get More Reviews

Encourage the customer to review your business by clicking “Write a Review” on your Google My Business page. The facts are clear: The more reviews on your Google business page and the more recent and the better the rating of those reviews, the higher you are going to rank in local search results.

Review Management is a real thing, it is vital to the success of your business, and you need to be doing it yesterday. Have a plan and process in place to ask customers for reviews and make it easy for them to post the best of your reviews on Google.

On May 11, 2018, Google announced that they are sending email notifications to consumers when a business has posted a response to a review the consumer has left, encouraging them to view the review response.

Not only does this up the expectations of consumers to hear back from businesses they have reviewed as word spreads of these new review response notification. It also makes leaving reviews a more interactive experience, enriching the experience for people who put in the time to leave reviews.

Review responses will immediately be visible on Google Search and Maps, and the reviewer will be emailed a notification like this one

Schedule time to be an active presence on Google and respond appropriately to reviews to show future customers the high value you place on your customers’ experiences with your business. You can only respond to reviews on “verified” Google My Business pages, so if you haven’t done this yet, go now to Verify a Local Business on Google.

#4 Update Your Business Hours

Many businesses change their hours seasonally or year to year. Look at the hours on your listing and make sure they are up-to-date with Every Permanent, Holiday and Seasonal Change.

Navigating with Google Maps, and selecting a business that Google believes is closed or closing soon, you will be asked if you still want to go to this location even though it is closed or closing within the hour.

Don’t lose customers because you have incorrect hours listed.

While you are at it, update your payment options if they have changed to avoid disappointing all of those Apple Pay© or Discover Card© paying customers.

#5 Update Map Location

You’ve verified your address is correct. Now take a look at your location on the map and make sure the marker is in the right place. If the marker placement doesn’t make sense or it is on the wrong side of the road, you can drag the marker on that map to your exact business location.

While logged into your Google My Business Account, use the sidebar to find and click the “Info,” and you’ll see an option to view your listing on either Google Search or Google Maps. Click on the button next to your address and you can move the location pin to the correct place.

#6 Pick All Business Categories

Categories on Google My Business is one of those instances where “more is more.” Select all the categories from their list that apply for your business, and don’t be afraid to get specific. “Sports Bar” is more relevant than “Bar” in search results.

This helps Google consider your business as a relevant result for local searches in that category. Don’t over-reach or misrepresent your business. Google is sure to notice and won’t be happy. But choose all the categories that represent the services or products your business provides.

#7 Individual Practitioners Listings

You know who you are:

• Doctors

• Dentists

• Lawyers

• Financial Planners

• Estate Agents

• Insurance Agents

If you are a public-facing professional, with your own customer base, your name is your business name for Google My Business.

If you work with clients and customers and they can directly contact you at the verified location during business hours then that is good enough for Google.

For these types of individual practitioners, Google wants you to create your own page, where you can include title and degree designations such as Dr, MD, JD, CFA.

#8 Add Photos

Adding quality, story-telling photos to your Google My Business listings can go a long way in selling your business, but no photos at all also speaks volumes about your business.

Multiple surveys have shown that photos, reviews, and opening hours all have a substantial, positive relationship with consumer engagement.

Showing photos of your business location (interior and exterior) not only helps customers find your business, but it also helps build the trust customers need to overcome the fear of the unknown and try a new business.

With photos, customer reviews, and accurate location and contact information consumers are more likely to take a chance on your business.

Here are the basic photo guidelines for Google My Business:

Photos must be in one of these formats: JPG, GIF, PNG, TIFF, BMP.

Each photo must be smaller than 5MB.

We recommend adding photos that are larger than 720 x 720 pixels and smaller than 3000 x 3000 pixels.

The longer dimension of the photo should be no more than twice the shorter dimension. Landscape photos look better than portrait photos on Google products.

Each location can have no more than 25 additional photos.

The photo should be in focus, well-lit, have no Photoshop alterations, and no excessive use of filters. The image should represent reality.

If your photos don’t fit these standards, we may not be able to display them on Google products.

Types of Photos on Google My Business

There are several types of photos you can add to your business listing:

Profile photo: Help your customers recognise your business.

Cover photo: Showcase your page’s personality. Adding a cover photo automatically sets it as your listing’s preferred photo. This action doesn’t guarantee it populates as the first image for your business, but it does tell Google that you prefer to display this photo.

Additional photos: Add different photos to spotlight features of your business that customers consider when making purchasing decisions. Learn more about business photos.

#9 Google My Business Videos

Now you can post videos to your Google My Business listings in addition to photos to give search users a richer view of your business. Videos can be up to 30 seconds long, and it’s worth noting that videos can be added by owners AND customers.

Adding video is as easy as adding photos. Log into your Google My Business account and go to the photo section to upload the latest photos or videos. While you’re in there, select the best “Cover,” “Profile” and “Logo” images for your profile.

Videos uploaded by you will appear under the “By owner” tab and customer-uploaded videos will appear under the “By customer” tab. All videos will appear under the “Video” tab where you can delete any videos. For search and map users, videos will show up the same as photos. If you have two or more videos, you could have a video sub-tab show up on mobile searches.

Optimising Google My Business Videos

Creating a video for your locations is neither complicated nor expensive and doesn’t require extra equipment or video editing software. Start out by taking simple videos of your location’s interior, exterior, employees working, and customers enjoying your products and services.

All you need is a smartphone to take and share or save videos. These Google My Business videos are not and cannot be commercials or advertising and must be taken by users at your location. If video content isn’t relevant to each specific location, Google will probably remove it.

Here are the Google My Business Format and Style Guidelines:

Basic Guidelines

• Video Max Duration: 30 seconds

• Video Max File size: 100 MB

• Video Min Resolution: 720p

Stylistic Adjustments

• Stylistic adjustments (such as applied filters) are acceptable, provided that these stylistic changes are minimal and are not appended elements such as borders, text, collaged images, etc.

• Content that makes it difficult for others to understand the environment you’re sharing may be rejected.

• Screenshots, drawings, posters and other non–photos, other than videos, should not be uploaded.

If they ask if you take Sunday appointments, then a good answer is “Yes, we do work on Sundays but only by appointment with limited services.”

3. INSTALL THE GOOGLE MAPS APP ON YOUR PHONE.

Log into Google Maps with the account you use to manage Google My Business, and make sure that notifications are turned on. Stay on top of your Q&A section with push notifications you’ll receive when you are logged in. Currently, there is no Google My Business dashboard section to monitor the Q&A feature.

Self-Isolation Diary: A Day in the Life of Brooke Lynn Hytes

As people around the country wind down their fourth week of self-isolation, FASHION is reaching out to some of our favourite Canadians to get a peek into how they’re living their lives in lockdown (remember: #StayHomeSaveLives). Each week, keep an eye out for new self-isolation diaries from actors, designers, athletes and artists who are riding this uncertain time out with us.

I currently live in Nashville and am here with my two beautiful cats, Henry and Apollo, who are keeping me company. Honestly, my cats have been everything. I am such an animal person, and they bring me peace. I began self-isolating in early to mid March. It was hard for the first couple of weeks, not really understanding what was happening. I feel like I’ve settled into quarantine now and am happy to do my part to flatten the curve.

The toughest thing about self-isolation is to not be working. I love to work and be busy. I always remind myself that this too will pass and that staying home is a luxury that not everyone in the world can do. It’s easy and the least we can all do to support everyone on the frontlines of this.

On the bright side, my manager and I have been working remotely on lots of exciting new things to come online, and in person once this is all over. I also have had some great catch-ups with friends and family that I otherwise wouldn’t have had time for, so that is nice too.

I’m watching lots of Netflix shows—Call the Midwife, Tiger King—and I love a good episode of Trixie [Mattel] and Katya [Zamolodchikova]’s web series UNHhhh.

I’m also reorganizing all of my drag. I have been on tour for a full year and this is giving me a moment to get everything together so I can come back stronger than ever! The chance was snatched from him by [[Robert Adam]], who completed the North front (above) much as Brettingham designed it but with a more dramatic [[portico]].]] ”’Matthew Brettingham”’ (1699 – 19 August 1769), sometimes called ”’Matthew Brettingham the Elder”’, was an 18th-century [[England|Englishman]] who rose from humble origins to supervise the construction of [[Holkham Hall]], and become one of the country’s best-known [[architect]]s of his generation. Much of his principal work has since been demolished, particularly his work in London, where he revolutionised the design of the grand [[townhouse]]. As a result, he is often overlooked today, remembered principally for his [[Palladian]] remodelling of numerous country houses, many of them situated in the [[East Anglia]] area of [[Great Britain|Britain]]. As Brettingham neared the pinnacle of his career, Palladianism began to fall out of fashion and [[neoclassicism]] was introduced, championed by the young [[Robert Adam]]. ==Early life== Brettingham was born in 1699, the second son of Launcelot Brettingham (1664–1727), a [[bricklayer]] or stonemason from [[Norwich]], the [[county town]] of [[Norfolk]], England. He married Martha Bunn (c. 1697–1783) at [[St. Augustine’s Church, Norwich]], on 17 May 1721 and they had nine children together.Lucas His early life is little documented, and one of the earliest recorded references to him is in 1719, when he and his elder brother Robert were admitted to the city of Norwich as [[wikt:freeman|freemen]] bricklayers. A critic of Brettingham’s at this time claimed that his work was so poor that it was not worth the nine [[shilling]]s a week (£formatnum:1719 in CURRENTYEAR) he was paid as a [[artisan|craftsman]] bricklayer.Howell James, p.345 Whatever the quality of his bricklaying, he soon advanced himself and became a building [[independent contractor|contractor]]. ==Local contractor== [[Image:Norwich Castle keep, 2009.jpg|270px|thumb|left|alt=Norwich Castle, repaired by Brettingham|Brettingham repaired Norwich Castle.]] During the early eighteenth century, a building contractor had far more responsibilities than the title suggests today. A contractor often designed, built, and oversaw all details of construction to completion. Architects, often called [[Surveyor (surveying)|surveyors]], were employed only for the grandest and largest of buildings. By 1730, Brettingham is referred to as a surveyor, working on more important structures than [[cottage]]s and agricultural buildings. In 1731, it is recorded that he was paid £112 (£formatnum:1731 in CURRENTYEAR) for his work on Norwich Gaol.Howell James, p.346 From then, he appears to have worked regularly as the surveyor to the Justices (the contemporary local authority) on public buildings and [[bridge]]s throughout the 1740s. Projects of his dating from this time include the remodelling of the Shirehouse in Norwich, the construction of [[Lenwade]] Bridge over the [[river Wensum]], repairs to [[Norwich Castle]] and [[Norwich Cathedral]], as well as the rebuilding of much of [[King’s Lynn Minster|St. Margaret’s Church, King’s Lynn]], which had been severely damaged by the collapse of its spire in 1742. His work on the Shirehouse, which was in the [[Gothic architecture|gothic]] style and showed a versatility of design rare for Brettingham, was to result in a protracted court case that was to rumble on through a large part of his life, with allegations of financial discrepancies.Howell James, p.348 onwards In 1755, the case was eventually closed, and Brettingham was left several hundred [[Pound Sterling|pounds]] out of pocket—several tens of thousands, in present-day terms—and with a stain—if only a local one—on his character. Transcripts of the case suggest that it was Brettingham’s brother Robert, to whom he had subcontracted and who was responsible for the flint stonework of the Shirehouse, who may have been the cause of the allegations.Howell James, p.349 and Colvin, p.155 Brettingham’s brief flirtation with the Gothic style, in the words of Robin Lucas, indicates “the approach of an engineer rather than an antiquary” and is “now seen as outlandish”. Matthew Brettingham’s first notable employment was here as [[Clerk of the Works]] and executive architect in 1734.]] In 1734, Brettingham had his first great opportunity, when two of the foremost Palladian architects of the day, [[William Kent]] and [[Richard Boyle, 3rd Earl of Burlington|Lord Burlington]], were collaboratively designing a grandiose Palladian country [[palace]] at [[Holkham]] in Norfolk for [[Thomas Coke, 1st Earl of Leicester (fifth creation)|Thomas Coke, 1st Earl of Leicester]]. Brettingham was appointed [[Clerk of Works]] (sometimes referred to as executive architect),Nicolson, p.247 at an annual salary of £50 (£formatnum:inflation per year in CURRENTYEAR). He retained the position until the Earl’s death in 1759. The illustrious architects were mostly absent; indeed Burlington was more of an [[idealist]] than an architect, thus Brettingham and the patron Lord Leicester were left to work on the project together, with the practical Brettingham interpreting the architects’ plans to Leicester’s requirements. It was at Holkham that Brettingham first worked with the fashionable Palladian style, which was to be his trademark. Holkham was to be Brettingham’s springboard to fame, as it was through his association with it that he came to the attention of other local [[patron]]s, and further work at Heydon and [[Honingham Hall]] established Brettingham as a local country-house architect.Colvin, pp.154 and 156 Brettingham was commissioned in 1742 to redesign [[Langley Hall]], a [[mansion]] standing in its own [[park]]land in South Norfolk. His design was very much in the Palladian style of Holkham, though much smaller: a large principal central block linked to two flanking secondary wings by short corridors. The corner [[tower]]s, while similar to those later designed by Brettingham at [[Euston Hall]], were the work of a later owner and architect. The [[neoclassicism|neoclassical]] entrance lodges were a later addition, by Sir [[John Soane]]. In 1743, Brettingham began work on the construction of [[Hanworth Hall]], Norfolk, also in the Palladian style, with a five-bay [[facade]] of [[brick]] with the centre three bays projected with a [[pediment]]. In 1745, Brettingham designed [[Gunton Hall]] in Norfolk for Sir [[Baron Suffield|William Harbord]], three years after the former house on the site was gutted by fire. The new house of brick had a principal facade like that of Hanworth Hall, however, this larger house was seven bays deep, and had a large service wing on its western side. The original house, built circa 1666 in the [[France|French]] style, was built around a central [[courtyard|court]] with large [[pavilions]] at each corner. While keeping the original layout, Brettingham formalised the [[window|fenestration]] and imposed a more classically severe order whereby the pavilions were transformed to towers in the Palladian fashion (similar to those of [[Inigo Jones]]’s at [[Wilton House]]). The pavilions’ [[dome]]s were replaced by low [[pyramid]] roofs similar to those at Holkham. In 1751, he began work for the [[Charles Wyndham, 2nd Earl of Egremont|Earl of Egremont]] at [[Petworth House]], Sussex. He continued work intermittently at Petworth for the next twelve years, including designing a new picture gallery from 1754. This period marks a turning point in his career, as he was now no longer designing country houses and farm buildings just for the local aristocrats and the Norfolk [[gentry]], but for the greater aristocracy based in London.Howell James, p.350 One of Brettingham’s greatest solo commissions came when he was asked to design a town house for the [[Edward Howard, 9th Duke of Norfolk|9th Duke of Norfolk]] in [[St. James’s Square]], London.Girouard, p.196 Completed in 1756, the exterior of this mansion was similar to those of many of the great ”palazzi” in Italian cities: bland and featureless, the [[piano nobile]] distinguishable only by its tall pedimented windows. This arrangement, devoid of [[pilaster]]s and a pediment giving prominence to the central bays at roof height, was initially too severe for the English taste, even by the fashionable Palladian standards of the day. The floor plan was based on an adaptation of one of the secondary wings he had built at [[Holkham Hall]].Girouard, p.195 A circuit of reception rooms centred on a grand staircase, with the staircase hall replacing the Italian traditional inner courtyard or two-storey hall. This arrangement of salons allowed guests at large parties to circulate, having been received at the head of the staircase, without doubling back on arriving guests. The second advantage was that while each room had access to the next, it also had access to the central stairs, thus allowing only one or two rooms to be used at a time for smaller functions. Previously, guests in London houses had had to reach the principal salon through a long enfilade of minor reception rooms. In this square and compact way, Brettingham came close to recreating the layout of an original Palladian Villa. He transformed what [[Andrea Palladio]] had conceived as a country retreat into a London mansion appropriate for the lifestyle of the British aristocracy, with its reversal of the usual Italian domestic pattern of a large ”palazzo” in town, and a smaller villa in the country. As happened so often in Brettingham’s career, Robert Adam later developed this design concept further, and was credited with its success. However, Brettingham’s plan for Norfolk House was to serve as the [[prototype]] for many London mansions over the next few decades. Brettingham’s additional work in London included two more houses in St. James’s Square: No. 5 for the [[William Wentworth, 2nd Earl of Strafford (1722-1791)|2nd Earl of Strafford]] and No. 13 for the [[Henry Liddell, 1st Baron Ravensworth|1st Lord Ravensworth]].Sheppard, pp.99–103 and 136–139 Lord Egremont, for whom Brettingham was working in the country at Petworth, gave Brettingham another opportunity to design a grandiose London mansion—the Egremont family’s town house. Begun in 1759, this Palladian palace, known at the time as Egremont House, or more modestly as 94 Piccadilly, is one of the few great London town houses still standing. Lord Leicester, Holkham’s owner and Brettingham’s employer, was a particular hero of Curzon’s.Jackson-Stops, p.94 Curzon was a [[Tory]] from a very old Derbyshire family, and he wished to create a showpiece to rival the nearby [[Chatsworth House]] owned by the [[British Whig Party|Whig]] [[Duke of Devonshire]], whose family were relative newcomers in the county, having arrived little more than two hundred years earlier.Jackson-Stops, p.92 However, the Duke of Devonshire’s influence, wealth, and title were far superior to Curzon’s, and Curzon was unable to complete his house or to match the Devonshires’ influence ([[William Cavendish, 4th Duke of Devonshire]], had been Prime Minister in the 1750s). This commission might have been the ultimate accolade Brettingham was seeking, to recreate Holkham but this time with full credit. [[Kedleston Hall]] was designed by Brettingham on a plan by Palladio for the unbuilt Villa Mocenigo. The design by Brettingham, similar to that of Holkham Hall, was for a massive principal central block flanked by four secondary wings, each a miniature [[country house]], themselves linked by [[Quadrant (architecture)|quadrant]] corridors.Harling, p.126 From the outset of the project, Curzon seems to have presented Brettingham with rivals. In 1759, while Brettingham was still supervising the construction of the initial phase, the northeast family block, Curzon employed architect [[James Paine (architect)|James Paine]], the most notable architect of the day, to supervise the kitchen block and quadrants.Jackson-Stops, p.95 Paine also went on to supervise the construction of Brettingham’s great north front. However, this was a critical moment for architecture in England. Palladianism was being challenged by a new taste for neoclassical designs, one exponent of which was [[Robert Adam]]. Curzon had met Adam as early as 1758, and had been impressed by the young architect newly returned from Rome. He employed Adam to design some garden [[pavilions]] for the new Kedleston.The National Trust, p.9 So impressed was Curzon by Adam’s work that by April 1760 he had put Adam in sole charge of the design of the new mansion, replacing both Brettingham and Paine. Adam completed the north facade of the mansion much as Brettingham had designed it, only altering Brettingham’s intended portico. The basic layout of the house remained loyal to Brettingham’s original plan, although only two of the proposed four secondary wings were executed. Brettingham moved on to other projects. In the 1760s, he was approached by his most illustrious patron, the [[Prince Edward, Duke of York and Albany|Duke of York]] (brother of [[George III of the United Kingdom|King George III]]), to design one of the greatest mansions in [[Pall Mall, London|Pall Mall]], namely [[York House, Pall Mall|York House]]. The rectangular mansion that Brettingham designed was built in the Palladian style on two principal floors, with the [[state room]]s as at Norfolk House, arranged in a circuit around the central staircase hall. Built during the 1760s, it was one of his last grand houses. His last country-house commission was at [[Packington Hall]], Warwickshire. In 1761, he published his plans of Holkham Hall, calling himself the architect, which led critics, including [[Horace Walpole]], to decry him as a purloiner of Kent’s designs.Wilson, pp.175–176 Brettingham died in 1769 at his house outside St. Augustine’s Gate, Norwich, and was buried in the aisle of the parish church. He is not a household name today largely because his provincial work was heavily influenced by Kent and Burlington, and unlike his contemporary [[Giacomo Leoni]] he did not develop, or was not given the opportunity to develop, a strong personal stamp to his work on country houses. Ultimately, he and many of his contemporary architects were eclipsed by the designs of Robert Adam. Adam remodelled Brettingham’s York House in 1780 and, in addition to Kedleston Hall, went on to replace [[James Paine (architect)|James Paine]] as architect at [[Nostell Priory]], [[Alnwick Castle]], and [[Syon House]]. In spite of this, Adam and Paine remained great friends; Brettingham’s relationships with his fellow architects are unrecorded. Brettingham’s principal contribution to architecture is perhaps the design of the grand town house, unremarkable for its exterior but with a circulating plan for reception rooms suitable for entertaining within on a forgotten scale of lavishness. Of Brettingham’s work, only the buildings he remodelled have survived, and for this reason Brettingham now tends to be thought of as an “improver” rather than an architect of country houses. There is no evidence that Brettingham ever formally studied architecture or travelled abroad. Reports of him making two trips to Continental Europe,Burnett are the result of confusion with his son, Matthew Brettingham the Younger. That he enjoyed success in his own lifetime is beyond doubt—Robert Adam calculated that when Brettingham sent his son, Matthew, on the [[Grand Tour]] (1747), he went with a sum of money in his pocket of around £15,000 (£formatprice in CURRENTYEAR), an enormous amount at the time. However, part of this sum was probably used to acquire the statuary in Italy (documented as supplied by Matthew Brettingham the Younger) for the nearly completed Holkham Hall.
