Why was it always Earth that weird shit happened to?
Carol floated some distance away from New York City, staring at a… well, it looked alarmingly close to a blackhole. It’d consumed most of the city, and had a drifting debris field circling it. The sliver of comfort she clung to, was that it couldn’t possibly be an actual blackhole. If it was, then Earth would have been destroyed by the time she’d arrived.
That being said, she didn’t know what it was. Maybe a wormhole, but who the hell had opened it and why had it ate New York?
When she dove down to the teams monitoring it – she wasn’t surprised to see different teams clamouring to try and figure out what was going on. S.W.O.R.D was present, as was S.A.B.R.E, NASA… every acronym organisation Carol could think of was here.
She instinctively headed for S.A.B.R.E.
“There’s a signal coming from it,” a researcher explained, trying his best not to fidget with his tie, glancing at Carol. “We can’t decipher what it says, whatever’s being sent comes out this end completely garbled.”
“Can you at least tell if it’s alien?” She asked.
“No,” he shook his head, “human, alien, AI… whatever it is, it’s too corrupted by the time we receive it for us to properly get anything.” He snapped a finger as if he recalled something, “it sounds like it’s following a pattern though.”
She frowned.
“So, what’s the plan?”
The plan was terrible, not that Carol got a say in it. She was supposed to fly close to the event horizon and hope that her suit’s gear could relay a clearer signal back to S.A.B.R.E command. If not that, then at least pick up something more helpful herself, and return with it. The general consensus was that her powers should protect her from whatever terrible effect the portal could unleash.
Key word: should. That didn’t exactly inspire confidence.
Because there were a few things in the universe Carol decidedly did not mess with. Blackholes were one of them, in fact they were at the top of the damn list. And this thing, while not exactly functioning like a true blackhole, certainly looked the part.
She flew closer, fighting against the sinking feeling in her gut. She passed by pieces of a broken skyscraper, gliding through the debris as if it were an asteroid belt.
Her first hint that something was about to go wrong, was seeing wisps of her energy begin to trail towards the darkness.
“Huh,” Carol frowned, holding up her hand, watching the traces fly towards the blackhole. “That’s not good.”
Her second hint was the stomach-churning sensation of two sources of gravity fighting over her.
The third hint–well, it wasn’t so much as a hint as the realisation that she’d been being pulled closer this entire time, only now had it become obvious. The black horizon she was being dragged to was getting alarmingly large, with nothing inside of it and no light escaping it. Carol tried to fly away and escape, but she couldn’t—and now she was noticing she was getting pulled in faster.
“Oh, shit—”
Carol gasped, eyes snapping open to stare at a sky that was a bright void of white. Her body was sore, and she couldn’t quite remember what happened after she tried to escape the wormhole’s pull. She sat up, finding that she’d landed on a floating piece of sidewalk.
“What the hell…” she murmured, looking around.
The world around her was a whitescape save for chunks of what could only be the remnants of New York City. Pieces of all sizes floating, bouncing off one another and then drifting apart.
Carol stood, frowning as her ears buzzed from the stark silence of this place. She was thankful when it faded, but what she heard in place of it made her hesitate.
Music.
With no real idea where she should go, she followed the sound, jumping from her little island of concrete to one that looked like a section of an apartment complex. She slipped through a window and landed in an obliterated living room, the couch was sort of just spinning in the air, while a record player floated near to what remained of a wall.
That’s when she saw another person. Someone who looked familiar, but she couldn’t quite place him. He was taller than she was, dark hair, looked a little tired.
Tumblr media
“Hi,” she greeted, “did you... put the music on?”

When doing this research, I accidentally chose two objects of the same color white. So, in comparison to one another, I did not have to change descriptors in order to more accurately describe the white. The only difference I noted was that one was shiny/reflective, while the other was matte. However, this was not true between the two types of lighting I used. The first image was lit using my phone flashlight, while the second was lit with the overhead lights in my boyfriend’s house. The first is a more blue-tinted or even purple-tinted white, while the second is a more yellow-tinted white. It really is interesting how lighting can make such a big impact on color, and how within one color, there can be such variation.

whitescapes assignment !!
so for wednesday’s whitescape assignment, i took a photo of a fluffy white keychain that was detached from a perfume bottle on the reversed side of my bed comforter since it was white as well. i thought it would be interesting to place a textured object into a textured background :3
in the first photo, i used the flash option on my phone camera. even tho the surface and object are both white, the shadows from the flash casted onto my comforter which made it look slightly gray in the back. the fluffy keychain appeared to have a yellowish tint, making the white seem more of a beige/cream white.
in the second photo, you can see tremendously how different the two whites are. the keychain seemed more beige compared to the surface. in person, the comforter looks like it’s a pure white but in the photo it looks a little bit beige as well because of my phone camera. the keychain looked more beige in person as well.

I used my white lamp with my toilet.
For the first one, I had the bunny light on, they are pretty similar in white but I can see a difference. The toilet lid has somewhat of a peachy and light pink hue. The bunny has a tiny tiny orange tint to it.
The second one, I turned the light off and their colors look more similar than the first picture. The toilet lid now though has a somewhat navy-ish or a lowly saturated purple. The bunny honestly just looks pure white to me, more grayish in a way but I think the color to best describe it is a lowly saturated midnight blue.

For the Whitescapes Art Assignment, I took a white piece of paper outside to photograph with the white snow on my white car. Then I came inside and recorded my observations on the paper. Transcript:
The paper looked bright and blue against the snow, a more neutral white beneath the paper. The wind* fought my ill-prepared plan, ut I managed to get some snow on top of the paper. Against the blue, it took on a slight reddish tinge. I'm sure I would have had different--and perhaps slightly more interesting--results, if I'd gone out in the day time and again around now, in the dull blue fading twilight on a stormy day, but procrastination got the better of me.
Back inside, under my incandescent light, and with no other whites around, the paper takes on a more neutral white. The splotches where it was soaked with snow, however, are no longer white at all, but a sparkling mid-gray.

And finally the last attraction of Tahua: the Salar de Tunupa (or Salar de Uyuni, for tourists...) - the biggest salt flat on earth. The view from 1500m above is weird...breathtaking...like looking into a endless NOTHINGNESS... The pure white surface is only interrupted by a few hills but and some water, making it a perfect mirror. Due to the festival and weekend, there are no cars going to Uyuni and we don't have the possibility to see the Salar from within.... Nevertheless we walk into the entrance, which is enough to get the impression of what the next 200km will look like.

Range or Uniform?
This assignment was so fascinating to me. I took three objects- two paper and one porcelain, and compared them under a yellowed light with the sunshine peeking into the room, and then a dark, blind-drawn room. The comparisons were done in the afternoon, which I think is important to note because what we see depends on the amount of light. I think that the lighting drew out a blue or lavender grey in one of the papers, and a steel-like grey tint in the porcelain when it got dark. Porcelain was very matted in either light. In contrast, the notebook paper ended up being a yellow tint.
This allowed me to contemplate the idea of white being either a uniform or a range of colors that we have simply codified to make life simpler. I have always known white to be the absence of color-and this opened my eyes to see just how expansive white can be, and how it changes throughout time. It really makes you feel something new about such a neutral shade. I’m reminded of when you want to redo your paint in your house, and you go somewhere like Home Depot to get paint swatches to place by your walls- suddenly what you thought would be a simple task turns into a thousand options for the one color you thought you were going in to get- it’s ivory, light pearl, condensed milk, and powdered sugar white-after awhile, you’re not even sure there’s a difference anymore😂😂

This is a white note pad on top of my white desk. The first one is just a normal photo and the second one I added light. What I noticed is even though both of these objects are white they are different tones of white. You really notice it when you add the light to it.

These are the two white objects under different lighting settings; one for night time glow and the other one for reading under the same lamp with those different lighting objects. This is really cool how the lighting color switches the contrast of the colors of these objects as the warm lighting one seems to have more of contrast between the white colors than the colder lighting. In the colder lighting, it seems that the whites are almost identical shades.

White Scapes
Tumblr media
In my first picture, all lights in the room were on. In looking at the picture, the one on the left seems to have more of a blue tone to it. The piece of paper on the right seems to have more of a pink tone in my eyes. I think it’s fascinating that even though these are both white objects, they appear to have different tones of blues in reds when my lights are on.
Tumblr media
In the second picture, I had all the lights off except for my lamp. This one, the whiteboard on the left seems to almost have a yellow tone to it while the paper on the right still has a red tone. My lamp has three different settings and I tried to take pictures of these two items in all three settings, but it was too dark to really get a good sense on the color. I think it’s amazing how with less light, sending that once looks blue now seem to have a yellow tint to it.
I promise they are two different lightings even if it doesn’t look like it in the pictures hahaha!

Color Research: Whitescapes
For my white-scape experiment, I placed a white paper towel into a white mug onto a white shelf:
Tumblr media
The paper towel and the shelf seem like pretty bright whites compared to the mug, which seems grayer in comparison. Perhaps since it has a glossier finish than the other two surfaces it reflects off more of the shadows? Or maybe it just isn't as bright of a white.
Next, I placed a light turquoise tissue paper over the light, and snapped this:
Tumblr media
In person, the whites had a more apparent blue-green hue, but there still is a difference between the two photos. All whites have muddied and reflect a little of the blue-green. The paper towel still seems pretty white, and the shelf seems more blue-green in the mid-tones.
Perhaps next time I'd try a more vibrant paper?

For this I used my sisters Kitty Lamp she got for Christmas and my bedroom closet
The first image is with the Lamp on and i used my closet for the white background and i have the lamp placed on a stool. I had my lamp on wich is a white light. I think this is a cool photo of the two because the lamp is really glowing it looks yellow to me instead of white, it looks neat! Also the closet color looks a bit pink/purple to me, but its still white.
The second image is with the Lamp off, and i used my yellow head light instead. The colors of my closet and the Lamp appear identical to me. Also they don’t look pure white but they look like a slight yellowish white.
