Whit Saturday
Tumblr media
Whit Ales. Source: Dark Oxfordshire website
This week in June the West Linton Whipman Play at West Linton near Edinburgh took place. There is no dramatic performance however, the “play” consisted of the Whipman riding to all the local landowners to drum up some alms for the poor before a gala of sports and feasting took place, including horse decorating and riding. The event began in 1803, but died out after the Second World War although there have been attempts to revive it.
In 2023, today is also Whit Saturday on which the Whit Ales would take place all across the country to bring the Whitsuntide celebrations to a close. They were quite rumbustious affairs, involving dancing, shooting ranges, and even stag hunts. Mumming Miracle Plays also featured. They were slowly replaced in the later nineteenth century by the more sedate Club Feasts, which resembled modern day garden fetes.

Mary I's Fight For The Throne
c.30th May 1553 - Mary is perplexed
After sending her letter and receiving no reply, Mary begins to grow concerned. The Imperial ambassador reports on the 30th May that "the Princess of England is in great trouble and perplexity, because of the illness of the King, her brother. It seems strange to her that she has heard nothing yet from his Majesty." 1. He reassures her by making "every excuse [he] could think of." 2.
Meanwhile...
The Order of the Garter ceremony, due to take place on Whit Sunday, is postponed. 3
On the 25th May [Whitsuntide] a triple marriage ceremony takes place at the Dudley townhouse, Durham Place. Jane Grey marries the Duke of Northumberland's youngest son Guildford Dudley, while her sister Katherine marries the Earl of Pembroke's son and Catherine Dudley the Earl of Huntingdon's son. King Edward sends "presents of rich ornaments and jewels to the bride" 4.

Dream Vision; A Nightmare (1525), by Albrecht Dürer, who died on this day in 1528.
The watercolour and accompanying text describe an apocalyptic dream he had on the night of 7-8th June 1525. The text reads: “In 1525, during the night between Wednesday and Thursday after Whitsuntide, I had this vision in my sleep, and saw how many great waters fell from heaven. The first struck the ground about four miles away from me with such a terrible force, enormous noise and splashing that it drowned the entire countryside. I was so greatly shocked at this that I awoke before the cloudburst. And the ensuing downpour was huge. Some of the waters fell some distance away and some close by. And they came from such a height that they seemed to fall at an equally slow pace. But the very first water that hit the ground so suddenly had fallen at such velocity, and was accompanied by wind and roaring so frightening, that when I awoke my whole body trembled and I could not recover for a long time. When I arose in the morning, I painted the above as I had seen it. May the Lord turn all things to the best.”

“When May Day arrived, the great celebration of love […] Henry was now deeply in love with Katherine […] The turning point came at Whitsuntide, on 16 May. Henry confided to Cromwell that his ‘greatest grief’ was that he would ‘surely never have any more children for the comfort of this realm’ should this state of affairs continue. He added that he thought Anne was not his lawful wife nor had she ever been. Cromwell promised he would do his ‘uttermost to comfort and deliver your grace of your affliction’, but he did not elaborate. […] Henry indicated his desire for a divorce to Cromwell in late May 1540” (Wilkinson)

The commemoration of all the faithful departed is celebrated by the Church on November 2, or, if this falls on a Sunday or a solemnity, the feast is celebrated on November 3.
The Office of the Dead must be recited by the clergy on this day, and all the Masses are to be of Requiem except one of the current feast, where this is of obligation.
Through prayer, intercessions, alms, and visits to cemeteries, people commemorate the poor souls in purgatory and gain them indulgences.
The theological basis for the feast is the doctrine that the souls which, on departing from the body are not perfectly cleansed from venial sins, or have not fully atoned for past transgressions, are debarred from the Beatific Vision, and that the faithful on earth can help them by prayers, almsgiving, and especially the sacrifice of the Mass.
In the early days of Christianity, the names of the departed brethren were entered in the diptychs.
Later, in the sixth century, it was customary in Benedictine monasteries to hold a commemoration of the deceased members at Whitsuntide.
In Spain, there was such a day on Saturday before Sexagesima or before Pentecost, at the time of Saint Isidore (d. 636).
In Germany, there existed (according to the testimony of Widukind, Abbot of Corvey, c.980) a time-honoured ceremony of praying to the dead on October 1. This was accepted and sanctified by the Church.
Saint Odilo of Cluny ordered that the commemoration of all the faithful departed be held annually in the monasteries of his congregation.
From here, it spread among the other congregations of the Benedictines and among the Carthusians.
Of all the dioceses, Liège was the first to adopt it under Bishop Notger (d. 1008).
It is then found in the martyrology of Saint Protadius of Besançon (1053-66).
Bishop Otricus (1120-25) introduced it into Milan for October 15.
In Spain, Portugal and Latin America, priests say three Masses on this day.
A similar concession for the entire world was asked of Pope Leo XIII; he would not grant the favour but ordered a special Requiem on Sunday, 30 September 1888.
In the Greek Rite, this commemoration is held on the eve of Sexagesima Sunday, or on the eve of Pentecost.
The Armenians celebrate the passover of the dead on the day after Easter.

Why did Anne have a coronation while she was pregnant? I would think that Henry wouldn't want to risk her health.
Well, it was a matter of timing in some sense, once he found out she was...dominoes had to be set up, the arrest of Bishop Fisher before Anne's first public appearance as Queen, the Acts pushed through Parliament, the ruling of the Convocation, even the choice of date seems deliberate (Parliament was prorogued until Whitsuntide, her coronation was Whitsunday).
It seems that he just thought it was religiously and politically important, balanced with concern for her health, since his yeoman apothecary, Cuthbert Blackeden had instructions to attend her during her coronation.

Today, the Church remembers All the Faithful Departed. Observing Christians typically remember deceased relatives on the day. In Western Christianity the annual celebration is now held on 2 November and is associated with the season of Allhallowtide, including All Saints' Day (1 November) and its vigil, All Hallows’ Eve (31October).
Orate pro nobis.
In the sixth century, it was customary in Benedictine monasteries to hold a commemoration of the deceased members at Whitsuntide. According to Widukind of Corvey (c. 975 AD), there existed a time-honoured ceremony of praying to the dead on 1 October in Saxony. But it was the day after All Saints' Day that Saint Odilo of Cluny chose when in the 11th century he instituted for all the monasteries dependent on the Abbey of Cluny an annual commemoration of all the faithful departed, to be observed with alms, prayers, and sacrifices for the relief of the suffering souls in purgatory. Odilo decreed that those requesting a Mass be offered for the departed should make an offering for the poor, thus linking almsgiving with fasting and prayer for the dead. From there the 2 November custom spread to other Benedictine monasteries and thence to the Western Church in general. The Diocese of Liège was the first diocese to adopt the practice under Bishop Notger (d. 1008 AD).
In the 15th century the Dominicans instituted a custom of each priest offering three Masses on the Feast of All Souls. During World War I, given the great number of war dead and the many destroyed churches.
All Souls' Day is also known liturgically as the Commemoration of All Faithful Departed, and is an optional observance seen as "an extension of All Saints' Day", the latter of which marks the second day of Allhallowtide.
This year my family remembers Mike Lingle, Gary Beecham, Jim Beecham, and Birdie Beecham. May their souls, and those of all the faithful departed, by the mercies of God, rest in peace and rise in glory.
O God, the Maker and Redeemer of all believers: Grant to the faithful departed the unsearchable benefits of the passion of your Son; that on the day of his appearing they may be manifested as your children; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen.

Mary I's Fight For The Throne
c.20th April 1553 - Mary is given a gift
The Duke of Northumberland is still keeping Mary informed of the health of Edward, though as Imperial ambassador Jehan Scheyfve notes "not with so much detail as before." 1
At the end of April Northumberland sends her "her full arms as Princess of England, as she used to bear them in her father, the late King's, lifetime.". 2 Mary's coat of arms had been stripped from her aged 18 after the birth of her sister Elizabeth, where "the badges usually born by her lackeys on their coats-of-arms were instantly removed, and replaced by the King's scutcheon." 3
Tumblr media
Her coat of arms combined the Tudor arms of the English lion and French fleur de lys, with her mother's Aragon arms, supported by a crowned falcon and greyhound; the greyhound belonged to the Richmond family - Mary's great-grandfather Edmund Tudor, was the first Earl of Richmond. 4
Meanwhile...
Jousts that were supposed to take place on May Day (1st May) are put off until Whitsuntide (25th May). 5
The Duke of Northumberland arranges to marry his youngest son Guildford, to Jane Grey, eldest daughter of the Duchess of Suffolk and cousin of Edward and Mary. 6

Me: *about to have a bite of pasta because by blood sugar is low*
Co-worker: Hey, I have this guy on the line about [small thing] and only YOU can clear it up. It'll take two minutes.
Client: *proceeds to take half an hour, most of which is spent trying to figure out why this man can seemingly juggle very complex sums but not read, before figuring out he's missing a letter with all the information he wants to know. Regardless, be presses on and wants to know why we're not paying out his medical bills twice, and bills he never handed in, and a bill we paid out two weeks ago. [Small thing] gets brought up. He demands I explain the tax deductibility of medical bills, the difference between two distinct social security laws, and why it's a felony to defraud people through insurance premiums. He doesn't get it, but shuts up. We resolve [small thing]. He wishes me a happy Whitsuntide.*
If anyone needs me, I have no idea why the VOIP app is acting up, I'll look into why none of my calls don't connect after I've had some food and the world stops being wobbly.
