Sometimes Visual Studio likes to be stubborn and break the toolbox when I've been screwing around with custom controls.... (like the following screenshot) where no matter what you do, you can't drag 'n drop the built-in controls (like a CheckBox or Button).

found out via a old blog post (will edit later to link original post) that you have to delete a couple of files in your localappdata folder :p

so I made a small powershell script that automates it for you and deletes those files on every version of visual studio that is setup under the current account :3

I've been itching to dive into something totally new and outside of my usual web dev comfort zone! After brainstorming for a while, I finally landed on a brilliant new project idea: building my very own desktop widget~! 

Now, full disclosure—I have zero idea where to even start when it comes to programming a widget, but that’s where the fun comes in, right? I’m all about learning new things (I have an addiction to studying so…)~!

In this post however, I’ll be sharing my initial ideas for the widget and brainstorming what tech stack might bring this amazing idea to life~! 

Prior knowledge on desktop widgets?

All I know is that they stick to the desktop area and some even always in front of the other windows. That’s all I know!

Widget Idea

So, the project idea I’ve chosen is something simple, just so I can get used to making widgets: a notepad. But, it’s not just any plain notepad widget—it’s going to have an aesthetic color scheme! (I know, pretty cool, right?) I really wanted to keep things basic for this first project.

The inspiration actually came from a Pinterest pin that I saved. I think the design is originally from a color palette generator website, but I want to take that concept and turn it into an actual desktop widget. Thus this project was born!

Tech Stack

Alright, I lied—I'm not entirely stepping out of my comfort zone for this one! I'll be using ReactJS, a technology I’m super comfortable with and absolutely love. But to keep things fresh and challenging, I’m diving into something new as well!

After researching (thank you, ChatGPT, Google, and YouTube), I found out there are plenty of ways to build a desktop application, or in this case, a widget. You can go with WinForms, WPF, Tauri (Rust), Qt, and others. But I wanted to stick closer to JavaScript—specifically something I could pair with ReactJS. So, ElectronJS seemed like the best fit.

For this project, my tech stack will be:

SCSS (for those extra styling powers)

HTML (obviously)

Visual Studio Code (with a lovely brown theme 🧸)

Toward the end of the project, I’ll also explore how to package the widget so people can download and install it on their own computers, and how to store the notes locally!

FIRST OF ALL. wayv is my favorite nct unit. just some basic overview:

they debuted in january of 2019 as a cpop group completely separate from nct, under label v (sm entertainment but in disguise and in china)

the connection to nct was always there -- winwin was a member of nct 127 since debut (even before johnny and doyoung was added, and jungwoo was added to 127 to "replace" him) and was never removed from 127 on paper. ten debuted with t7s unit, which was nct's overall debut. kun performed without you (chinese version) when he was a trainee

they debuted with regular (chinese version), which was initially a 127 song. they also had come back (chinese version) on their debut mini, which was also originally a 127 song. technically their first song was dream launch

wayzennies don't consider regular their real debut because fucking sm couldn't be assed to let them debut with their own song smh we hate sm here

their first comeback and their debut in wayzennies' hearts was take off

after that, moonwalk, love talk, turn back time, bad alive, kick back, then they went on a cursed haitus, then they broke hiatus with phantom and now, omy

dream launch, take off, moonwalk, and turn back time are their lore music videos. wayv is the only nct unit to have lore btw!

resonance (nct 2020) was a huge era for us because that was the first time they were officially acknowledged as a unit of nct. before that, fans had to put together compilations of nct members mentioning wayv members, renjun got in trouble for mentioning winwin's name in a vlive once, and taeyong once had a vlive where he said "wayv members are here" (but he had to whisper) and showed them in the distance and waved and everything and the fandom went wild

you really had to be there, all nct units (including wayv) changed their profile pictures for 2020 at the same time and the teaser for the resonance project included shots of wayv. i almost cried.

now. lemme talk about music

wayv is one of the music units, definitely. 127 and wayv both have very distinctive musical identities that are reflected throughout their discography

btw, nct units used to have interludes on their full albums. it's more of a yearly full nct thing now, but it was used in regular (127), neo zone (127), awaken the world (wayv), and then resonance (2020) to kind of pull their entire concept together with the signature nct chime. nct interludes are also just some good music !!!

wayv as a unit has a very dramatic sound, the take off/moonwalk/turn back time holy trinity definitely is very consistent in sound and has prominent rock/orchestral elements in the instrumental plus the signature guitar dance break

a lot of their songs are produced by ldn noise and moonshine

on my youth is actually a departure from their old sound. moonlight sounds most wayv 1.0 in their album. the rest of the album is definitely wayv 2.0, which is great because it kind of signifies their transformation and renewal post-dozen

they had two seasons of wayvision on seezn but it's a korean show and, while certain parts are fun, it was a little awkward. right after debuting they had a show called wayv's dream plan which was filmed in china and a lot more fun

of course because i'm me, if you're chinese speaking you should check out their huya lives. i'm not sure that they're subbed in english tho

for translations i'd recommend bun bun, wayv china station, and faith (she's actually my favorite, she does a great job at translating colloquial language and remaining faithful to the 'vibe' of what was said in chinese)

your anons are so comfortable to critize wayv and i appreciate that because if you critize wayv they will jinja kill you. i always feel so bad lost my interest to wayv and don't find their any content since 2021 entertaining but i keep it for myself because we all - even you- keep ignore these things because they were mistreated and deserved better, now they are getting 2018 nct 127 level of promo they are everywhere so the they are not promoted agenda is not true anymore so its ok to saying that for me. im out of ncity since last year but i always want to say this to anyone. wayv contents smell only fanservice feed kunten shippers and feed their "mommy tennie cleans daddy kuns underwears" jerk agendas. dream is also doing fanservice im not denying this but their entire brand is not built over this.

this is a safe space for wayv criticism and appreciation. i will both support and criticize the group, because i am not easily clouded by my emotions when it comes to this situation 😭 what's happening to wayv is both good and bad. i'm loving the exposure but they're losing the original wayv charm. maybe they'll gain new fans because of this, but they are also losing a lot of fans in the process.

the problem is sm has such talented vocals and members, that i love sm artists because of this. there's no "can't sing or dance" allegations usually against them. i've even noticed that chenle who arguably is "the worst" dancer in dream (bc bro only trained for 2 months + he's a singer) can still dance well enough where he does not look like he's lacking at all.

looking at old wayv content and content now it's so clear... winformation wasn't fanservice at all. i miss it. without winwin i just don't see the dynamic anymore.
