Mini-Game Review: Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom
Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom was an impulse buy. I bought it, Unruly Heroes, and Windbound at around the same time. Though, Windbound was a game I’d been looking forward to playing after I saw a trailer for it. I haven’t played much of it yet to say too much more and this post is about Monster Boy.
It plays like a standard platformer at times. It does side-scroll but you can backtrack. It’s mostly on a 2D plane with up down and left right movement.
I have terrible platforming skills. I always have. I prefer RPGs almost out of self-defense to platforming. Just kidding, but the fact a platformer needs a lot more precision than I can usually muster is why I, usually, prefer RPGs.
Now while I call it a platformer, it has a bit of everything in it. There are Adventure RPG style elements, combat, puzzles, and even a few times where it becomes a side-scrolling shoot ‘em up a la Gradius (a game whose name I just had to google because I’ve seen it played but never knew its name).
This variation in playing styles mostly comes from the forms Monster Boy-whose name is Jin- can take: Pig, Snake, Lion, Dragon, and Human.
With each new form unlocked, you can then back-track across the game to find things you might have missed before or areas you were previously unable to access.
For instance, there was a chest in a water section that you needed the Snake to access as well as the Pig to shoot a fireball as part of the puzzle solution.
Each form has its own drawbacks and strengths.
As far as pure platforming the Frog, Human, or Lion are best at that. The Pig and Snake’s jumps leave a lot to be desired and the Dragon can fly making platforming a non-issue.
Puzzles force you to use both your brain and your timing, which I personally struggled with.
The controls were frustrating to me-at times-and a few configurations didn’t make much sense to me but I got used to it. There were very few times it felt like the character’s jumps and landing were too slippery and those often involved ice platforms to begin with.
The Story, as minimal as it was, I found compelling enough that I wanted to know why everyone had gotten cursed and see Jin and his family and friends be free of the spell.
This game also payed homage to the previous games in the series as this is actually part of the Wonder Boy series. Both with a few 8-bit sections here and there and direct references to some of the previous protagonists. I felt it was a nice touch to honor the past while maintaining its own identity.
Now on to the aesthetics. I impulse bought this game because I saw footage of it in action and I thought it looked gorgeous. I love games that look like this. It’s not just a nostalgia thing, I just think these games are beautiful. Also, who doesn’t want to play what looks like a cartoon/anime?
Having beaten the game, I would recommend it, despite how frustrating I found it at times due to my own lack of platforming skills.
It’s wonderful to look at and overall it’s just a good time.

September 2021’s PlayStation Now lineup is headlined by the likes of Tekken 7 and the original Final Fantasy VII. This month’s arrivals to the PlayStation streaming service were previously outed in a leak that made the rounds over the weekend.
It’s worth noting that two major titles are also leaving the service today, September 6. Said experiences include The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which joined three months ago on June 1, and Saber Interactive’s World War Z – the latter came to PS Now earlier this year with the March lineup. PS Now’s various offerings over the last several months have been nothing short of impressive. In addition to World War Z, for example, the March entries brought Ace Combat 7 and Infamous: Second Son to the platform. Three different Sonic the Hedgehog games entered the mix in honor of the brand’s 30th anniversary in June. Plus, heavy-hitters such as Red Dead Redemption 2 and Judgement led the charge for the July selection, which additionally included God of War (2018), Nioh 2, and others.
Related: PS Now Is A Worthy Xbox Game Pass Competitor (But Almost No One Noticed)
The leaks were correct, Tekken 7 will indeed headline PlayStation Now’s September 2021 lineup alongside the original Final Fantasy VII, according to the PlayStation Blog. Tekken 7 hits the service on Tuesday, September 7, and will remain available until February 28, 2022. 1997’s Final Fantasy 7 lands on the same day, along with Killing Floor 2, Pathfinder: Kingmaker – Definitive Edition, Ghost of a Tale, Moonlighter, and Windbound – these six titles will stick around for an indefinite period of time.
Tumblr media
As many may be well aware, Final Fantasy VII counts as the first of five classic Final Fantasy games coming to PS Now in the coming months. Through January 2022, PS Now subscribers will gain access to FF8, FF9, FF10/10-2, and FF12, PlayStation revealed last week.
While the wait for the other four Final Fantasy adventures persists, PlayStation Now members can explore the thrills of battle in fighting game Tekken 7. Of course, the original Final Fantasy VII awaits, as does indie action RPG Ghost of a Tale. Survivor game Windbound allows players to explore land and sea, while Moonlighter offers another action RPG complete with rogue-lite elements. Those looking for a different type of role-playing title can jump into the isometric world of Pathfinder: Kingmaker – Definitive Edition. And Killing Floor 2 should give first-person shooter fans plenty to sink their teeth into.

Sekiro, NBA 2K21, Super Bomberman R Online, and More New Games Coming to Google Stadia
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Stadia has been out for almost a year now and Google continues to improve and add new titles to the cloud gaming service. During its July 2020 Connect broadcast, Google announced quite a few things coming to Stadia in the next few months. New games and features were highlighted in the 18-minute announcement video.
Among the highlights are Stadia ports for Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (Fall), Dead by Daylight (September), Hitman (September), Hitman 2 (January 2021), NBA 2K21 (Fall), and the upcoming Outriders (Holiday 2020). Also coming to the service is Super Bomberman R Online, a new installment in Konami’s classic series that features a 64-player battle royale mode and is coming to Stadia before any other platform. The game is slated for a Fall 2020 release.
Super Bomberman R Online will also be one of the first titles on the service to utilize Stadia’s Crowd Play feature, which allows players to jump into the game with their favorite YouTube streamers. This feature has been one of the biggest topics of discussion since it was first announced last year, so it’ll be interesting to see how it all works.
We also learned more about the games coming from Stadia Games and Entertainment, the service’s publishing division, including a wacky new multiplayer title from Splash Damage called Outcasters. Players will “face off in matches up to eight as you sharp-shoot, bounce, and spring your way to success across colorful combat arenas.” The game is out in Fall 2020. Check out the trailer:
Stadia Games and Entertainment also announced new partnerships with three veteran studios — Harmonix, Uppercut Games, and Supermassive Games — to make Stadia-exclusive titles. While Uppercut is best known for smaller indies, both Harmonix and Supermassive Games are big names that will undoubtedly turn some heads. Harmonix is responsible for basically every rhythm and music game you’ve ever loved, including Guitar Hero and Rock Band, while Supermassive is best known for highly-cinematic horror experiences like Until Dawn and The Dark Pictures Anthology. It definitely looks like Stadia is working to flesh out its lineup of exclusives a bit, something it desperately needs to do to stand out from other, more established platforms.
You can watch the full Stadia Connect broadcast below:
Here’s the full list of studios and games coming to Stadia in the future:
● 2K – PGA TOUR 2K21, Mafia 2 Remastered, Mafia 3 Remastered, WWE 2K Battlegrounds, NBA 2K21 ● Behaviour Interactive Inc. – Dead by Daylight ● Camouflaj – République ● Capcom* ● CD PROJEKT RED – Cyberpunk 2077 ● Deep Silver -CHORUS, Windbound ● Devolver Digital – Serious Sam 4 ● Dotemu – Windjammers 2 ● Electronic Arts – Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, FIFA, Madden NFL ● FromSoftware – Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice ● HandyGames – El Hijo – A Wild West Tale, One Hand Clapping ● Harmonix* ● IO Interactive A/S – Hitman, Hitman 2, Hitman 3 ● Konami – Super Bomberman R Online ● Larian Studios – Baldur’s Gate 3 ● Matt Makes Games Inc. – Celeste ● Milestone S.r.l. – Monster Jam Steel Titans ● Modus Games – Rock of Ages 3: Make & Break, Cris Tales ● Necrosoft Games – Gunsport ● Pandemic Studios – Destroy All Humans! ● Ravenscourt – KONA, Relicta ● Splash Damage – Outcasters ● Supermassive Games* ● Square Enix – Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris, Marvel’s Avengers, Outriders ● TinyBuild Games – Hello Neighbor, Hello Neighbor: Hide and Seek ● Ubisoft – Watch Dogs: Legion, Gods & Monsters, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Far Cry 6 ● Uppercut Games* *Publisher to announce content at their discretion

With the Nintendo Switch’s Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild setting the sales charts on fire and ushering in an open-air concept of adventuring in the open-world space, a bunch of developers do what they also do and decided to ape the concept with their own clones and pump them out on as many platforms as possible. Windbound Revealed by 5 Lives Studios with an August Release Date
April 5, 2020 12:11 PM EST
5 Lives Studios reveals their second project Windbound; The game looks to be a far departure from Satellite Reign, yet promising regardless.
In an April 2 PlayStation Blog co-founder of 5 Lives Studios, Mitch Clifford revealed Windbound, the studio’s second project.
5 Lives’ last game was Satellite Reign; a cyberpunk top-down strategy game that released in August 2015. 5 Lives appear to have gone in a completely different direction with Windbound as screenshots show a colorful island-riddled ocean in an art-style similar to Rime and Wind Waker. Clifford shared some insight into the game’s story and setting; “Windbound takes place on a long-forgotten archipelago, once home to an ancient civilization. The game begins shortly after Kara—our protagonist—is separated from her fleet during a fierce and mysterious storm”.
youtube
Survival appears to be the primary goal of the adventure as Clifford states “the player’s initial motivations are purely survival-focused”. The Windbound website shares a bit more detail including the ability to craft tools and weapons, hunt wildlife, and upgrade your boat. The site also mentions that “you must set sail when resources become scarce”. Hinting that Kara will be nomadic, rather than searching for an island to call home. She will jump island to island on her quest to rejoin her tribe.
The reveal also shares that building the top-notch ships will be of critical importance. After all, the sea isn’t a peaceful place as Clifford hints at a mysterious creature swimming beneath the waves and warns players; you are not alone. Starting from a grass canoe, players will be able to craft custom vessels to travel from island to island.
It’s very interesting that 5 Lives is creating such a different project with Windbound than their first outing Satellite Reign. However, Windbound looks promising thus far, and the trailer definitely gave me some Wind Waker vibes. It’s important to note that although this announcement was made on the Playstation Blog the Windbound website lists PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC at the bottom. In fact, Windbound already has a Steam page where users can add the upcoming title to their wishlists.
We are sure to hear more about Windbound and have more information about the game here on DualShockers leading up to its release for seemingly all platforms on August 28.
