The ethics in RWBY are really weird. I mean, I’m not a professor of ethics and I don’t know much past what I’ve seen on Wikipedia and the Good Place (such a great show,) but it’s so weird to see a show that seems to switch between virtue ethics and consequentialism at random.
(Virtue ethics) may be identified as the one that emphasizes the virtues, or moral character, in contrast to the approach that emphasizes duties or rules (deontology) or that emphasizes the consequences of actions (consequentialism). Suppose it is obvious that someone in need should be helped. A utilitarian will point to the fact that the consequences of doing so will maximize well-being, and a virtue ethicist to the fact that helping the person would be charitable or benevolent.
Of course, it’s a lot more complicated and in-depth than just that, but I’m not going to get into specifics (again, I’m not qualified to do that lol.) But let’s look at some examples of these two ethical beliefs in RWBY.
“Stealing is wrong no matter what,” sounds like virtue ethics at play, and that’s how Blake saw things. That was one of the reasons that she left the White Fang, that was always framed as one of the many things that made it so they were villains, that had to be taken out. Blake regretted her acts of theft in her early life no matter how justified they were. The message is that stealing is always wrong even when you’re stealing from oppressors.
“Stealing is justified in circumstances where you feel you have no other choice,” sounds like consequentialism, if your actions are justified and have good consequences, they’re good. This is put into practice when the group illegally stole the airplane in Argus (although this is actually badly portrayed consequentialism, considering that they didn’t need to do that, but I think we’re intended to perceive it as necessary, but I’ll keep talking about that later.)
“Violence is wrong, even when it’s precautionary or reactionary,” sounds like virtue ethics, and once again, that’s directed towards the White Fang. Despite being oppressed for centuries, even Sienna’s more minor violence is framed as completely wrong, and the Faunus are lectured about how they need to stop committing acts of violence if they want equality. The Ace Ops fighting Team RWBY is meant to be perceived as wrong, despite the fact that Team RWBY had broken the law, proven themselves untrustworthy, and were trying to stop them and Ironwood from doing something that would save people.
“Violence is justified in circumstances where it’s precautionary or reactionary,” sounds like consequentialism. Since the White Fang is hurting others, it doesn’t matter what their goal is (Faunus rights,) it’s totally fine to rip them to shreds, throw them off moving trains, even kill, etc. Since Team RWBY thought it was wrong to move Atlas, they were perfectly justified in beating up the Ace Ops for trying to arrest them. Qrow is perfectly justified in fighting Clover for the same reason.
“You always need to be honest, no matter if you don’t know if you can trust someone or not and no matter if you have good reasons to lie,” sounds like virtue ethics. This is applied to Ozpin in the show, his lying is deemed one hundred percent wrong, full stop, no excuses. He isn’t treated with any sympathy and has to apologize, which is seriously and begrudgingly accepted. Our main characters forcing his secrets out of him is framed as right, their angry responses are framed as totally justified. The message is clear. Lying and mistrusting is wrong. Honesty and trust is right.
“Lying is understandable and even right if you think you have good reason to lie and if you think you can’t trust someone, and Ruby was right about Ironwood, therefore her lying was fine,” sounds like consequentialism. Ruby’s lying is framed as reasonable and understandable. She didn’t have to be honest because she was reacting cautiously instead, putting a virtue on the back burner because she thought being honest might hurt people and wasn’t sure if James could be trusted - as in, she acted in mistrust. Although Yang suggests this was wrong, the show quickly hastens to tell us that Ruby was very right, having Yang walk back on her statements, and having Ironwood turn evil. The message is clear. Lying and mistrusting should be done if you think it will hurt less people. Honesty and trust aren’t always good.
“It’s never okay to willingly sacrifice a life, you must do whatever you can to save everyone no matter the cost,” sounds like virtue ethics. This is the central conflict between Team RWBY and Ironwood in volume 7. Ruby and co considered it wholly wrong to sacrifice the remaining people of Mantle in order to save Atlas and the Mantle citizens already evacuated, they considered the idea unacceptable and we (the audience) are meant to believe they’re entirely right and that Ironwood is - with this action - turning into a villain. The Ace Ops are also seen as wrong for wanting to destroy the whale even though they know that Team JORY is still inside it, because despite the fact that it would save thousands upon thousands, it would result in the deaths of four people.
“You have to do what is right, even if it requires sacrifice,” sounds like consequentialism. Pyrrha goes to fight Cinder despite knowing she can’t win, which is framed as heroic and good. Jaune, Nora, and Ren leave their mission defending the non-evacuated people of Mantle in order to try and rescue Oscar. Our group of protagonists trap a city full of civilians in Salem’s direct line of fire and cause many soldiers to die so that they can try and evacuate the citizens of Mantle. The show frames this as the right choice that the team made in the pursuit of saving everyone they could, and the dead soldiers are a sacrifice that the protagonists couldn’t avoid and therefore aren’t responsible for.
“Being a good person who tries is the most important thing,” This feels like virtue ethics. This is applied to Team RWBY and Ruby particularly all throughout season eight. What really matters is that is that they’ve been trying. What really matters is that they’ve had good intentions. What really matters is they’ve stuck to their guns, stuck to their moral code. The morality of their actions is judged by who they are, what virtues they embody, and what they intended. Ruby is constantly assured by the people around her that she hasn’t really done anything wrong because she’s a believer, she’s kind, she’s brave, she’s optimistic, she’s well-intentioned... She - and we as the audience - are assured that she was still good, even if nothing she did was effective, even if nothing she did even helped people This is also applied to Robyn. She might steal from the government, start fights, and not fix the wall with her stolen resources, but she has good intentions and wants to help, so she’s a good person.
“Your intentions and effort aren’t important, what matters is what you do and if it helps people.” This feels like consequentialism. It’s obviously applied to Ironwood - It doesn’t matter that he’s trying to save Atlas and the evacuated people of Mantle, it still doesn’t excuse what he did even pre-bomb threat. Hacking Penny, shooting the councilman, shooting Oscar, all of that is treated as horrible in the narrative whether or not he’s doing it to try to save thousands upon thousands of lives. Even the things he was doing in V7 were considered not good enough because they weren’t helping enough people. But it also applies to the White Fang yet again. Sienna Kahn might’ve had good intentions (ending Faunus oppression,) but her actions are judged by the harm they do to others. Ilia might’ve had good intentions (again, ending Faunus oppression,) but her actions were considered firmly bad and she had to decide to change her ways in order to be redeemed. On top of this, let’s add Whitley to the pile. Whitley is treated dismissively and coldly by Weiss, but then when he does something good that helps people, Weiss is affectionate with him and starts treating him well.
This is all very contradictory and weird. It doesn’t matter if you lean more towards virtue ethics or consequentialism, the story keeps waffling between the two and expects its audience to do the same. When they want Team RWBY to do something that might be considered wrong in the terms of virtue ethics (stealing, lying, using violence, etc,) they use consequentialism to justify it, but whenever they want Team RWBY to be morally superior to the people around them even if those people aren’t evil (Ironwood, Oz, Ilia,) they use virtue ethics to do that. Stories that include both as points of contention between characters, but both are framed as justifiable can exist and can be really good, but that’s not what we’re given. Stories that make it clear that they prefer one over the other can exist, but that’s not what we’re given either. RWBY is full of whiplash moments, where you have to go “Wait, wasn’t this framed as wrong just an episode ago?” and “Wait, wasn’t this framed as right and justified just an episode ago?” Because RWBY as a show doesn’t bother to believe in either of them. RWBY as a show is only concerned with saying what they can to make the protagonists look good, which is hard.
When you look at it, they’re bad at being consequentialists.
Let’s look at the first relevant consequentialist action I noted, where I used the example of stealing the Atlas ship to establish that the protagonists considered stealing justified and necessary, therefore morally sound. This was not only avoidable (Cordovin had given them the option of sending Weiss through and she could’ve contacted Winter as soon as her scroll was able to reach her,) but it caused a dangerous Grimm attack. As far as I know, no civilians were hurt. However, this was still an avoidable act of theft that caused negative consequences. Looking at them trapping Atlas is even messier. They do it to save the remaining people of Mantle, putting the people of Atlas (and the evacuated Mantle citizens) at risk so they can save the most people despite the soldiers lining up to die facing Salem and the possibility of Grimm getting in the city of Atlas and killing civilians before they can finish the evacuation. But you quickly realize that they literally can’t evacuate the people still in Mantle because they have no resources to do so. Then they start moving the remaining people of Mantle to the Crater where they won’t freeze to death (logical,) and JORY and the HH start trying to defend them (logical,) but then they don’t send Penny to move Atlas. They know that they can’t evacuate the people in Mantle to Atlas, have a temporary solution to the cold, and know they aren’t going to get more help in defending the civilians in their care and must take care of it themselves. But they continue to keep Atlas trapped there despite knowing that the consequence might be thousands dying. Looking at launching Amity and sending out the broadcast is even messier than that. The broadcast is ill-planned, sloppy, confusing, and hits several of the beats of Cinder’s broadcast, which kick started the Fall of Beacon. This could have terrible consequences in a world where the Grimm are drawn to negativity. People could panic, it could launch Vacuo (the last remaining fully functioning kingdom) into a state of emergency, it could cause people to lose all hope in the establishments or the Hunters themselves, it could make people go out looking for ‘maidens’ to help them. And no one should be able to just travel to help Atlas within a couple of days anyway, which Ruby seems to fully understand at times in how she frames things, but she also asks for help that logic says can’t come. This was something that might endanger people and cause mass panic and Grimm attacks, that didn’t actually do much good. In terms of consequentialism, this was a failure, this wasn’t the Right thing to do.
But when you look at it, they’re bad at virtue ethics too.
Of course, there’s the obvious. They lie, they mistrust, they steal, they’re violent. They point their weapons at Qrow in V6, Weiss points her weapon at Whitley, an untrained teenage civilian, Weiss throws a man in a dumpster for being anti-Faunus to Blake, Qrow punches a teenage body for lying to him about something important. But there’s also the fact that in V8, Ruby and Weiss and Blake don’t do much to help anyone. Ruby sends out her hopeful sounding message that could do very little (if logic means anything in this world,) and then sits in a mansion drinking tea, waiting for Nora to recover. Of course this is wrong from a consequentialist mind frame, the consequence of sitting around doing nothing when you can help save people is that those people might die. But from a virtue ethics standpoint... This action is selfish, maybe even cowardly. Ruby is meant to be selfless and brave, and remember that she’s the one who made it so Atlas civilians and the evacuated people of Mantle couldn’t escape, and then despite the fact that she’s a powerful fighter with a rare super power that can take out tons of Grimm at once, Ruby sits in a mansion and despairs that no one is coming to save her. Look, I’ve heard every excuse. It doesn’t matter if she’s wanted by the Atlas police. It doesn’t matter if she’s trying to take care of her friend. It doesn’t matter if she has no plan. The virtues Ruby is supposed to embody like kindness, bravery, resolve and selflessness would dictate that all of that has to take a backseat when she can save human lives.
This is a big reason why I’m so frustrated with RWBY. They keep waffling between these two conflicting ideas of what’s right and what’s wrong, and they’re failing to make our heroes properly fit into either category. They just then tell us that they fit. They always do what’s right for the most people and don’t look behind the curtain to see them fail to do just that. They always follow their virtues and don’t look behind the curtain to see them make excuses over and over for themselves while they expect everyone else to adhere to the standards they won’t reach for.
And honestly, fans do the same thing the show does, which is one reason why it’s so frustrating to talk to mega-stans that won’t recognize the main casts flaws while they refuse to see that Oz deserved better or that Ironwood wasn’t evil pre-end of volume 7. “Of course Team RWBY lied to Ironwood, they didn’t know if they could trust him!” “Whether or not Oz knew if he could trust them, he never should’ve lied to them.” They’ll say these things even sometimes in the same posts or comments and not even realize the problem. The show and the fans will use anything and any justification to pretend that Team RWBY was right and inculpable, but they’ll use anything and any justification to make anyone who opposes them - friend or foe - seem entirely in the wrong and at fault. That’s why Oz apologized to them, but they didn’t apologize back even though they treated him horribly. The show runners don’t care what Team RWBY did wrong, they’ve already jumped through all the mental hoops to pretend they were right.
Looking at Team RWBY through the lens of virtue ethics, they fail to meet a good standard, and looking at Team RWBY through the lens of consequentialism, they still fall short. And the show needs to stop acting like they’re inherently better than the people around them when they’re not. The show writers are using the excuses of consequentialism and virtue ethics whenever they think it can distract us from the fact that behind their fancy feel good words, they don’t know how to write good protagonists.

The official time in which Kai was kidnapped aboard the Rampion was short lived. Really from retrospect, one would assume the most significant revelation would’ve been the identity of a certain missing princess, or the ambitious plan to usurp a queen. Interestingly, the most notable takeaway from the experience was Kai’s lack of life skills.
So the dust settles on the Lunar revolution; weddings come and go, the world is explored, a queen abdicates and an empress is sworn in. But of more supposedly more importance is the mission to teach Kai any and all life skills deemed necessary.
Thus ‘The official and completely authentic list of life skills as directed by the Rampion Crew for his Majesty, Emperor Kaito of the Eastern Commonwealth, aka our pal Kai’ is born.
Iko sticks with the lengthy name despite Cinder calling it at best superfluous. The unofficial title of the official title replaces Kai’s name with “Cinder's trophy husband”, which earned Thorne a jab to the side from the cyborg in question.
Most of Winter’s additions are charming but unachievable, such as her advice to dance through the streets of New Beijing on horseback, whilst wearing matching outfits with said horse. Kai declines for the most part but does fulfil the smaller task of wearing matching face paint with someone; he and Cinder don cheek marks on one of their ventures out, even to Cinder’s embarrassment.
Some question the reliability of the bioelectrical lock based on Winter’s eccentricities, but those who know her realise that her quirks are simply Winter being Winter.
While in her satellite, Cress curated lists and lists of things she wanted to try on earth and gives these ideas to Kai. Being incredibly sheltered, a lot of her ideas are ones that Kai has already completed over his life, but he does his best to recreate some of them.
Even with Kai’s meticulously planned diet and nutritionist, Cress's workout regimes are useful. Kai makes an effort to add some of the stretches into his morning routine, even encouraging Cinder to join in (“Your foot can’t be asleep, that’s impossible, it’s metal.” “If it could let me stay in bed for another twenty minutes instead of going to a press conference, I can make it whatever I want”). Cress also recommends that Kai learn ethical hacking, but he takes one look at her coding and variables and assures her that if ever a situation should arise, “I’d entrust hacking to you over myself any day.”
Thorne’s contributions are ignored by everyone but still added to the list by Iko. They consist of everything from “Scale a mountain and plant a flag of your face at the top” to “Transfer 100,000 units to Carswell Thorne.” However, building up flight training is one of his milder and more reasonable suggestions, so Kai takes some time to learn the basics in case of emergency. Kai does not seek his guidance from Thorne himself.
Cress, ever the romantic, finds Thorne's ideas endearing, no matter how bombastic and preposterous they are. One of his more creative schemes is for Kai to build an island right off Jeju where Cyborgs can vacation. It is (unsurprisingly) rejected, but one day Thorne boards the Rampion to find a diorama of the island, complete with sustainable popsicle stick Cinder, Scarlet and Thorne. Thorne scooped Cress into his arms and declared that she can be the honorary non-cyborg invited to the island.
Jacin has no time for Thorne’s or even his beloved Winter’s nonsensical suggestions, and bluntly adds: ‘learn first aid.’ Kai takes this seriously, until Jacin is teaching him a specific technique and mentions “this is what I used to save Cinder when she stopped breathing.” Kai hadn't known that particular detail, and has to take a small anxiety break before resuming the instruction.
Scarlet is better than all of them when it comes to practicality. Basic dishes and chores are her additions, and Kai completes them, even with some blundering. His palace staff protest the emperor lifting a finger, but he finally manages with Cinder as his scapegoat (“You would let the Empress hang out the clothes!” “With all due respect your Majesty, Empress Selene does whatever she wants”).
Wolf mostly supports whatever Scarlet lists, especially since he learnt his own life skills with unattainable resources from Luna. He does though continue to teach Cinder some practical fighting skills, which Kai observes and attempts to recreate. Their more daring moves are a little too much for Kai.
Human life skills aren't Iko's expertise, and neither does Kai need to know how to reboot an android power cell, so Iko assigns him more frivolous things. Many are cosmetic based such as braiding hair, which results in many sessions where she instructs the flustered but dedicated Kai. He patiently weaves Cinder's hair back and forth until he familiarises himself with the pattern. Cinder obediently stays still as the hair model of choice, usually catching up on comms and royal duties on her portscreen.
When he gets too frustrated, Iko reminds him, “What if you have a daughter, and when she grows up she’s asked: “Princess, what is your greatest woe in life?” and she responds that her father never braided her hair?” Kai quickly learns the skill after that.
Torin’s protective nature over Kai is impervious to time, but his disposition softens a bit with Cinder’s influence. Torin encourages Kai to pursue the skills, knowing how much the approval of his friends means to him. And if Cinder’s singular addition of watching New Shanghai’s most renowned musical happens to be Torin’s favourite film, that’s probably a coincidence.
Cinder doesn’t really need to add to the list. Her skills—ranging from mechanical know-how, ruling a Kingdom 101 and overthrowing a tyrannical queen who is also your aunt—are inconsequential to Kai. He listens to Cinder’s recounts of mechanical problems and solutions but remains hopelessly inept with tools and motors. The ruling of a Kingdom also proves to be a bust, since Kai is the more experienced one of the two. However, he often finds himself intrigued by her perspective on matters, free from the bias of his politically-centred upbringing.
Cinder instead focuses on life experiences over skills. Eating ramen at a convenience store. Seeing the local markets at night. Going down the cramped alleyways, seeing the poor conditions, homelessness and rubbish. It’s a hard pill to swallow for Kai, but one that he needs to understand the full breadth of life in New Beijing as Cinder knew it. Cinder works hard to help Kai, especially as she knows he secretly really cares about accomplishing the skills.
Slowly the revised list is whittled down as Kai completes the tasks. Although some of them are simply not feasible or even plausible, the suggestions are kept for joint laughs and memories. The list never truly fades, with other members of the crew occasionally receiving a skill to try—often the result of an inside joke or dare.
Kai comes to consider himself fairly well-rounded, but he learns more from his friend’s qualities rather than any skill they could teach him. And if all else fails, at least he can talk eloquently enough to save his life.
Except he’ll probably interject with sarcasm.

Masterlist: B.Barnes one-shots
Tumblr media
*** denotes NSFW/18+
No Fair (1.6k) A quiet night at the compound leads to a game to pass the time. You play to win.
Good Shot (2k) While you’re wandering New York with a map—a paper one, yes—an Avenger whisks you off your feet in more ways than one.
Tease (1.2k) *** A fake date with a Danish alien tech dealer. Bucky gets bored, and maybe a little jealous, while he’s waiting in the command truck outside. It’s all downhill from there.
Patching Up (4k) *** Summertime, and the living is… interrupted by an injured Bucky Barnes falling face-first through your window. You’re not a nurse yet, but you’ve still got a duty to take care of him. And oh, you do.
Crash (1.6k) Kree attack. Ruined vehicle. Broken comms. You’re lost, and then, you’re found.
Old Habits (7.4k) *** Training with the Avengers isn’t supposed to be like the Red Room, but for you and Bucky, the past is hard to shake.
Blood Bank (8k) Your captors ask you your blood type. Your answer changes everything.
A Hands-On Exercise (5.6k) You hate your job, your life, and the cracks in your bedroom ceiling. Fortunately, you’ve got the chance of a lifetime after hacking—ethically hacking, that is—into Tony Stark’s systems. Unfortunately, your interview ends with you inadvertently pissing off the Winter Soldier. Will he forgive you for hacking into his arm?
Clever Fingers (2.8k) An exchange on the metro doesn’t quite go how Bucky expects.
Desperate Measure (1.9k) *** On the run, cornered in a closet—how the hell is Bucky supposed to keep from getting caught?
Spring Break (5.9k) A collision in JFK International Airport leaves Bucky Barnes with the wrong phone. You can still take photos of your vacation on his, but the nuclear codes are a slightly bigger problem.
Pizza Night (2k) What makes this pizza night different from all other pizza nights?
Midnight Drive (1.5k) You don’t know how long you’ve been sitting on the couch, but around midnight, Bucky Barnes whisks you off into the night.
The Sound of You (2.6k) *** After a mission gone wrong, you need to let out some steam. Bonus: ending from Bucky's POV ***
Sugarplum (1.9k) Prompt: “Having a crush on Bucky and leaving him a sugar plum Danish at his door every morning until he catches you.”
Running from then (1k) Your latest hiding spot from HYDRA and the Red Room has been compromised. But Natalia is busy. She sends a ghost from your past in her place.
A Walk In The Woods (1.8k) You weren’t expecting to run into arms dealers in the woods. Then again, who ever is?
A 12% Chance (903) You’ve played spin the bottle before. The stakes have never been this high.
Ti Amo, Adonis (898) Bucky wasn’t invisible in every Italian bar. When you caught sight of him, you couldn’t look away.
Not For Sale (2.2K) Bucky’s visits are more than welcome, but you’ve still got work to do.
A Private Tour (2K) Captain America and his brooding friend get a private tour of an art museum. As an intern, your only job is to keep a low profile. Oops?
Five More Minutes, Please? (3.1K) “Now you are, essentially, urgent care for trauma patient James Buchanan Barnes, former evil assassin, total lack of psychiatric qualifications notwithstanding.”
In Safe Hands (3.8K) Civilians don’t belong on missions. Oh well?
Snowed In (6.2K) You’re all set for a vacation in the woods. A cozy cabin, a fireplace, solitude… Then a tall stranger falls through you front door. What’s a girl to do?
Enjoying the view (2.6K) Your mission is going perfectly. Target is charming, receptive… Then you notice the balcony door is unlocked. Hmm.
bippity boppity f off (1.6K) Prompt: “Aren’t fairies supposed to grant wishes?” “sure, bibbidi babbidi fuck off” “Noted, not all fae are glitter and sparkle”

Coronavirus Limits California’s Efforts to Fight Fires with Prison Labor
Prisoners have helped California fight fires for decades, playing a crucial role in containing the blazes striking the state with more frequency and ferocity in recent years. They are an essential part of the state’s response to what has become an annual wildfire crisis. Some Californians, including former inmate firefighters, say the program provides a sense of purpose, offering prisoners a chance to prove themselves and the satisfaction of helping others. To critics the prison program is a cheap and exploitative salve, one that should be replaced with proper public investment in firefighting. Should California continue to use prison labor to fight fires: (1) Yes, (2) No? Why? What are the ethics underlying your decision?
They charge into fire zones with 60-pound packs and three-foot chain saws, felling trees and hacking through brush to make wide paths of dirt around anything worth protecting. Bright orange uniforms set them apart from other firefighters — and identify them as inmates of California’s state prisons.
“It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life,” said Ricardo Martin, who became an inmate firefighter while serving a seven-year sentence for driving while intoxicated and injuring another motorist in a crash. “But we took special pride in being able to actually save people’s homes,” Mr. Martin said. “Everybody talked about that and how good they felt about it.”
Prisoners have helped California fight fires for decades, playing a crucial role in containing the blazes striking the state with more frequency and ferocity in recent years.
This past week, though, Mr. Martin and hundreds of other inmate firefighters were absent from the fire lines. They had already gone home, part of an early release program initiated by Gov. Gavin Newsom to protect them from the coronavirus.
That has highlighted the state’s dependence on prisoners in its firefighting force and complicated its battle against almost 600 fires, many which continued burning across Northern California on Saturday. Experts worry that dry thunderstorms forecast to begin on Sunday could wreak more havoc, further stretching the resources needed to fight what are now the second- and third-largest fires in modern state history.
To critics the prison program is a cheap and exploitative salve, one that should be replaced with proper public investment in firefighting; to others it is an essential part of the state’s response to what has become an annual wildfire crisis. Some have complained that participants were released just when the state needed them most.
“The inmates should have been put on the fire lines, fighting fires,” said Mike Hampton, a former corrections officer who worked for decades at an inmate fire camp. “How do you justify releasing all these inmates in prime fire season with all these fires going on?”
Mr. Newsom’s answer is that prisoners faced another threat. Across the United States there have been 112,436 infections of inmates and correctional officers and 825 have been killed by the virus, according to a New York Times database. In four of the six prisons that train incarcerated firefighters, there have been more than 200 infections each among inmates and staff members, according to The Times.
The virus has also affected non-inmate firefighters. About 80 are currently in quarantine because of potential exposure to the coronavirus, according to the union representing firefighters.
At Delta Camp, an inmate firefighter facility outside Vacaville, an hour’s drive northeast of San Francisco, the number of incarcerated firefighters is down to 55, well below the camp’s capacity of 132. Over all, the state has the capacity to train and house about 3,400 inmate firefighters. Only 1,306 inmates are currently deployed.
Men like Mr. Martin, who was released on Aug. 11, say they are grateful to be back home.
The state’s main firefighting agency, Cal Fire, says it is overwhelmed by the size and complexity of the fires in Northern California, which by Saturday night had burned through nearly one million acres, forcing more than 119,000 people to evacuate and leaving at least five people dead.
Cal Fire, which has deployed 13,700 firefighters, is pleading for more personnel, especially the crews that create the so-called hand lines, the clearings crucial to stopping and slowing down wildfires. Mr. Newsom has requested more firefighters from as far away as the East Coast and Australia.
“Inmate fire crews are absolutely imperative to our ability to create hand line and do arduous work on our fires,” Brice Bennett, a spokesman for Cal Fire, said. “They are a tremendous resource.”
The coronavirus has exposed countless examples of inequality across the nation, has devastated state budgets, and has left tens of thousands of families bereft. The debate over California’s inmate firefighters shows how the pandemic’s consequences have reached deep into unexpected corners of society. In California it has been the difference between having the manpower to save homes from wildfires — or not.
The California prisons department estimates that its Conservation Camp Program, which includes the inmate firefighters, saves California taxpayers tens of millions of dollars a year. Hiring firefighters to replace them, especially given the difficult work involved, would challenge a state already strapped for cash.
The larger debate in California is whether the state, which has the largest inmate firefighter program in the country, should be employing prisoners to fight fires in the first place. Incarcerated firefighters in California are paid $1 an hour when they are on the front lines, leading some to describe it as slave labor. They work in treacherous conditions, with six inmate firefighters dying over the past three and a half decades, including one from the state’s female contingent of incarcerated firefighters.
Already there are plans to shrink the program. Mr. Newsom’s budget, passed over the summer, calls for closing eight inmate fire camps, which the governor’s office estimates will save $7.4 million.
The union that represents Cal Fire employees has been urging the governor and the Legislature to cease relying on inmate firefighters. Tim Edwards, the president of the union, said the California prisons department had been lowering the bar for inmates who qualify for fire camp.
“They are trying to add people who would have never made it into the camps before either because of multiple offenses or the types of offense,” Mr. Edwards said.
The department of corrections says inmates must have less than five years left on their sentences and are disqualified if they have a history of escape with force or violence or if they have been convicted of sexual offenses or arson.
The system of inmate firefighters was born of necessity during World War II, when many of the state’s firefighters were shipped off as soldiers to Europe and the Pacific. Inmates were deployed to fill their places. Several states, including Arizona, Georgia, Nevada and Wyoming, employ prisoners to fight fires, but none have as many as California.
Some Californians, including former inmate firefighters, say the program provides a sense of purpose, offering prisoners a chance to prove themselves and the satisfaction of helping others.
“It gave me a sense of direction and a sense of worth,” said Francis Lopez, who spent a year as an inmate firefighter. “There are people high-fiving you, there are big signs saying, ‘Thank you to the inmates for fighting our fires, for saving our homes.’ You see that and you think, ‘Wow, I can do good. I can be a person who is being respected.’”
Mr. Lopez, who was released three years ago and now works as a bartender in Fresno, said the incarcerated fire crews were one of the few parts of the prison system where inmates of different racial backgrounds fraternized. The food, which is prepared by the inmates, was better than in prisons, and they could spend large amounts of time outside. In the winter they worked on flood control projects.
But it is the firefighting work that was most harrowing. The scene he witnessed stepping out of the truck at his first fire is indelibly marked into his memory.
“That door pops, you get out, and there are hills all around you and everything is on fire,” he said. “There’s helicopters flying by, dropping pink retardant. There are fire trucks, hoses everywhere, and you’re hearing radio communication. It’s a very, very intense scene.”
Like the non-inmate firefighters, they work 24 hours straight, sometimes as long as 48 hours, hiking into remote, inaccessible canyons, charging up steep ridges, all the while carrying gallons of water, survival gear and their tools.
“We are the guys they send for the most dangerous missions,” Mr. Lopez said. “We are given the jobs that the machines can’t do.”
His one complaint: Inmates should be given a direct path to a firefighting job once they are released. “At least give him an interview,” he said.
Mr. Martin, the inmate firefighter released this month, said that even before the coronavirus he chose the program as a way to get an earlier parole and be reunited with his teenage son.
Finding a job with a felony conviction on his record will be challenging, said Mr. Martin, who was a police officer in Sacramento for 12 years before he was sent to prison. He is now looking into work with private fire contractors.
Mr. Martin said inmates would appreciate higher pay; when they are not fighting fires they earn between $2.90 and $5.12 per day, according to the prisons department. But what many inmates want most is freedom — an expedited release date.
“It’s dirty, hard work and after a 24-hour shift we sleep on the mountain with rattlesnakes and scorpions,” Mr. Martin said. “I don’t think anyone is there for the pay.”

How Digital Marketing Agencies Will Change Due to Covid - 19
Since the outbreak of the global pandemic COVID-19, many businesses are on a huge loss, but digital marketing agencies might, in fact, leap forward due to the novel Coronavirus. However, to leap forward, agencies need to concentrate on new planning, customer needs, and communication strategies. But, before that, if you own an agency, then you first need to know what impact will COVID-19 have and how things will change.
What Changes Will It Cause on Marketing Strategies
Due to the effect of COVID-19, at some level, the product market has also been altered for nearly every category and there have been clear changes in online demand and supply. As a consequence, digital marketing agencies should focus on their own product-market fit and also of their customers. This will be the most crucial exercise for the rest of 2020.
How Can You Win?
You need to concentrate on your customer and improve your strategies around their new challenges. For instance, there has been a drastic decrease in the searches "near me" terms while a surge in terms like "delivery". There has been a 15% increase in the traffic of YouTube whereas at the same time the advertising revenue has fallen down. Digital marketing agencies need to change their pricing, their services, and the way they take clients to the market.
What Changes Will It Cause in Organizations
Without any doubt, due to this pandemic, the way all the organization's functions will definitely change for a short period of time. Working remotely, the employees and the employers will get used to the current habit. In most cases, rent is not cheap and as a general rule, the profitability in the agency is low. Typically, agencies have between 5% to 30% of net profit and among that cost, rent plays a big part as the agencies usually love to have a good office which helps them to attract staff and surprise the customers. But, if the staff wants to work from home and the customers don't want to meet in the office, then it's a big advantage for the company. The best thing is that these savings or money can be invested more in employee success and client success.
But not having an office can lead to bigger problems such as the absence of team or company culture, lack of collaboration, community, and much more. It always feels good to work in an office together with your teammates. Without an office, the agency owners may face challenges related to management and will need to focus on accountability, and operations like:
● Regular show-up with team
● Per week responsibilities
● Time management with clients
How Can You Win?
This is the duty of every agency owner to decide, but, for the moment a few key things that might help an agency to function properly including video calls are;
● Non-work-related things or chatting with team members
● weekly multiple department check-ins.
What Changes Will It Cause in Communication?
Usually, clients love to interact with you or have an in-person meeting at their organization or at your organization. They love to enjoy a cup of hot coffee or have a quick snack break. But now, everything has completely disappeared. This puts up a necessity to everyone who attends those meetings just the same way they would do in person, but through a video call.
How Do You Need to Show Up for A Video Call?
Dress up nicely as you dress up regularly for your office, comb your hair properly, and make sure you are sitting in a bright and tidy room with a decent background that is presentable. Also, a nice set-up can definitely impress your clients.
Now imagine a scenario, where you are having a video call with one of your staff members who are in a sweatshirt, messed up hair, sitting in a dark room with their laundry falling apart on the floors. Now imagine a second scenario, where a second staff member is all dressed up nicely, with nicely combed hair, and has clear lighting on their face along with a whiteboard in the background with the company which can be used to note down the essential things. In the course of the meeting, you watch your digital marketing strategies are being mentioned and the same has been delivered to you. It is a completely new experience- the one that you've grown to believe in a professional environment.
More and more businesses are going digital and so will the marketing. It is important for marketers to think about the buyer persona and updated strategies. Digital marketing services need to respond effectively to employee needs, new customer strategies, and communication strategies, in order to thrive during this pandemic that has impacted everyone around the world.

Termination | An Excerpt from CROSS FIT
By Paul Teodo & Tom Myers
In eleven days I’ll have a year. Twelve months without a drink. About time. I’ve been around the program for about twenty years but could never manage a year. I was an in and outer. More out than in. I’d get to that tenth or eleventh month and shit would start to happen that’d make me thirsty. Disappoint all those who were hoping that I would get it. This time I felt good. Strong. I was close. But it was one day at a time.
I was in my office at Western Highlands Medical Center sipping black coffee, reading the Sun-Times, listening to La Forza Del Destino by Verdi, one of the darkest and most depressing operas ever composed. Everybody dies at the end, murdered or suicide; their prayers for salvation and redemption unanswered. Beautiful, but it could make you want to slit your wrists. Some people give me crap for listening to opera. I don’t have to explain it. I like it. Season tickets to the Lyric are more than a grand so it’s opera or the Bears. The Bears suck. I choose opera. With this job I can afford it.
Front page. FIVE PRIESTS ACCUSED OF MOLESTING ALTAR BOYS. The leaders of the church supposed to be protecting their flock sit on their asses while kids get abused and traumatized for the rest of their lives.
Also on the front page. OBAMA VISITS CHICAGO. November’s election was huge.
Sports Page. CUBS SWEPT FROM PLAYOFFS . I love it. I’m a Sox fan.
Business Section. HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATOR FOUND DEAD. We don’t usually make the news. Survived by his wife of thirty-two years and son.
Back page COLD SNAP PREDICTED TO SET OCTOBER RECORD. Bad weather? In Chicago? Who would notice?
DOG FIGHTING RING BROKEN UP. Made me think of mine. Hung from a Goddamn tree when I was a kid. I can’t go there. Not today. Not this morning.
I think I’d met that Orman guy. The hospital exec. Seemed like a good man. I wondered about a Jewish guy running a Catholic Hospital. I grew up in that neighborhood. I got out a long time ago. Glad to be gone. The area’s a war zone. I wondered if somebody off’d him. Wouldn’t be surprised.
My phone buzzed. I looked down at the screen, Greta. She never called this early. It was her me time, to meditate, maybe contort in yoga or Pilates. Should I pick up? She was my boss, but Jesus, it was 6:30. I cut the volume on the opera.
“Greta,” I tried to sound happy, surprised, “Good morning. Early for you.”
“Good morning. I figured you’d be in already.”
“I like early. Get my head clear for the day. What’s up?”
“Do you have some time today about 3?”
That’s when it started. That feeling like a monkey fist twisting your gut. The pain starts. You try to catch your breath, to make it go away, but that doesn’t work. The pain just gets worse. Then that monkey becomes a gorilla who reaches down and squeezes your balls tight. “Sure.” My voice now much less cheerful.
“Good. I’ll come to your office.”
“Should I have anything ready? Report, numbers, research?” Knowing that if the answer was no, the news would not be good.
She paused, maybe two or three seconds, I could see her bite her lower lip with that top incisor when she needed to make a decision. “No, I just want to talk. See you at 3.” She hung up before I could respond.
Her name faded from the screen. The gorilla squeezed tighter. My left nut. The most sensitive, ruptured by Sal Vittori, a man-child linebacker for Saint Rita who buried his helmet in my groin during the Chicago Catholic League City Championship after F.O. (Francis) O’Malley handed off to me for a 2 point conversion to take the lead. I did not succeed. It’s strange the shit you think about when you’re scared. Like that year I spent at The Illinois Youth Center in St. Charles, commonly known as Charley Town, after I almost killed that punk who hung my dog. I was scared then too.
Something bad was going down. It was her pause that told the tale, but what the hell? I finally got some fiscal accountability around here. Budget was now tracking. Doctors were happy. I’d fired the assholes who weren’t. Nobody’d died who shouldn’t have. And I’d taken the class she’d prescribed, learning how to talk to women, and not look at Greta’s breasts even when they plopped out of her blouse. I thought I’d toed the line. Maybe it was a let’s see where we’re at and where we need to go meeting. I looked at the ceiling and heard God laughing. That ain’t what she’s coming for bud.
No. Today bad shit was going to rain down. It would arrive at 3 packaged in a two thousand dollar business suit; Jimmy Choo shoes wrapping perfectly pedicured feet; five grand of jewelry strategically dangling from earlobes, wrists and neck, plunging artfully into ample cleavage, which, faithful to my training, I would studiously avoid.
I slugged the rest of the coffee and tried to distract myself with the sports page. BEARS LOSE AGAIN. They’re out of the playoffs two years in a row. LOVIE ON HIS WAY OUT. He should be. And the Bulls would be a lost cause this year under Vinny Del Negro. An embarrassment to Italian-American people.
What the hell does she want? I stood and stretched. The back cracked. My arthritic shoulder, fractured by Officer Brown when I jacked him for coming on to that little kid at Charley Town, still gave me problems. I’d proudly worn the jagged scar left by the hack that did the surgery. It gave me street cred. And it took two of them to hold me down while the good officer beat me with his club.
“Are you okay?” Jenna was an early bird too. A compact curly-haired brunette with runner’s calves and a Christian work ethic that was fifty percent scared and fifty percent dedicated stood in the doorway. Her bum husband had bolted with a crack-whore, draining their accounts, leaving her with kids aged two, four, and five, so she needed a job. Though I swear there were days she would have worked for free just to serve the Lord. She was my assistant.
“Fine Jenna, just a little sore.”
“Too much football.” Her smile was sweet, like honey. Or saccharin.
“Too much old.”
She giggled. She was maybe twenty four. “You’re so funny.”
I wasn’t. I was scared and something I had no control over was about to happen. That gorilla was holding tight.
“I’m gonna go for a walk.”
“You have a 7:30 with Dr. Eriksen.”
“He’s always late.”
“You never know, God surprises us.” She left.
“I won’t be long, and I doubt if even God can get him here on time,” I growled through the doorway. I grabbed my jacket, felt for my keys, and started to leave.
Her phone rang. Her face strained. She waved for me to stop. “Hold on Doctor,” she said into the phone.
I wanted out of there. “I’ll be back in time.”
She put him on hold and held up her hand. “It’s Dr. Eriksen. He’s on the line.” She looked around the room like she was ready to commit a crime. “He’s really PO’ed.”
I swiped the phone from her hand. “Bjorn what’s up?” Nothing. Silence. “Bjorn.” I tried again. Still nothing.
“Let me.” Jenna bent over the desk and clicked the button connecting me with the irate surgeon. She stood back clutching the ever-present crucifix she wore around her neck.
“This is totally unacceptable!” Eriksen was as arrogant and angry as I’d ever heard him.
“What is Bjorn?”
“The condition of the OR, unacceptable!” His voice louder with every word.
“What’s wrong now?” I emphasized now. Pompous prick.
“I’ve made my expectations clear and you do not deliver.” I could see his pale Scandinavian skin turn crimson.
“What do you mean?” I decided to play dumb.
“You know what I need.”
“What Bjorn?”
“I don’t need to grovel.”
He never asks. He demands. He’s never come close to groveling. It was no use talking on the phone. “Bjorn sit tight, I’ll be there in a minute.”
“I’ll sit where I choose.” He disconnected.
“He’s so scary. Are things going to be okay?” Jenna trembled.
I tried to comfort her. “He’s just a bully.” Her look told me Eriksen reminded her of someone from her past. Most likely the ex. I hate bullies.
“I’m going to the OR. I’ll be back when I’m back.”
Jenna sat at her desk quietly, eyes avoiding mine.
I stomped down the hall. I hate bullies. I always have. I tried to contain my anger but I’d had it with his threats and arrogance. I’m not sure who I was encountering in the hall as my mind was on the Swede.
“Good morning.” The voice seemed far away. “In a hurry?”
I picked up my pace, my steps echoing off the marble floor. Eriksen would be a good tune-up for my meeting with Greta. I welcome combat in the face of fear.
There was a crowd waiting at the elevator so I hit the stairwell. Four flights up would do me good. I took the steps two at a time.
I swiped my card and the OR doors flew open. Eriksen is 6’4, around two-thirty. Hacking on people is hard. He liked it meat locker cold while banging on a hip or yanking a knee in place. The staff complained when they worked with him needing parkas to keep their teeth from chattering. Eriksen liked to stand out in red short-sleeve scrubs and extra-long gloves, blasting ZZ Top as he sawed, hammered and sewed on the orthopedically damaged suburbanites hoping to improve their less than stellar golf or tennis games. On occasion, especially in summer, I’d catch him in shorts. “Bjorn,” I’d scold him like a recalcitrant kindergartner, “put your pants on, Infection Control.” He’d scowl, his mask crinkling and then bitch about the temperature. And then put his pants on. Orthopods. Prima donnas second only to neurosurgeons.
He turned as I entered and eyed me up and down as if assessing my worthiness to be in his presence. “Bjorn what’s wrong?” He turned away making me beg him to talk. “C’mon what’s wrong?”
Well Dressed Man echoed off the sterile green walls.
“Can we turn that down?” I yelled over the bearded Texans.
A masked attendant in blue scrubs silenced the music.
Eriksen pointed to the thermostat. “I have discussed this with you in the past. In fact, multiple times. The temperature is not to my standard.”
The staff was huddled in winter wear providing insulation to their flimsy scrubs. Eriksen stood alone in his short sleeve top.
I glanced at the thermostat. “It’s sixty-three degrees.”
“I expect fifty-eight. Nothing more. Nothing less.”
I wanted to smack him. That would score points with the staff, but I’d probably get charged with assault, lose my job and any severance that was going to be attached to what I assumed was my impending termination. “We can’t. Joe and I have worked on this. The equipment won’t go lower than sixty-three. Plus consider our staff.”
“They’re here to service me. I am the surgeon. I require fifty-eight, as I have communicated multiple times before.”
“Sixty-three Bjorn, that’s what we can do. It’s fine for the rest of the surgeons.”
“They don’t bring you the business I do.” His sneer sliding across his face like a snake. “I’ve cancelled my cases for the morning.”
I wanted to slap that look off his face. “You what?”
“Cancelled.” I could tell he was loving the hell out of this. The spectacle. The performance. The opportunity to display his power.
“You had two hips. A knee. Big cases. That shows no respect to our patients and their families, not to mention the inconvenience to our staff.”
He seemed to puff his chest. “I will take them elsewhere.”
The room became deathly silent. The staff cowered anonymously behind their surgical masks: eyes bouncing back and forth between me and this bully. He played the card that independent surgeons loved to drop on hospital executives. Usually the MD’s won. Loss of surgical revenue. It could be the death knell of an administrator’s career.
I had nothing to lose. I was getting fired anyway. “You worthless piece of shit. You can take your fucking cases wherever they’ll put up with your bullshit.”
I sensed smiles beneath the masks witnessing the spectacle. On what I assumed might be my last day I’d gained a bit of cred. I doubted I’d enjoy the skirmish at three as much.
He stormed out of the OR. Probably heading to Greta’s office.
My father would have said, “tristo kosmatih medvedov”, which literally means three hundred hairy bears. That’s as pissed off as you can get in the Slovenian idiom. So when my old man really wanted to insult someone he swore in Italian. But I’m sticking with “worthless piece of shit”.
