Hi everyone, Uni has started so I’ll be a bit busier now. Going back to school has inspired me though to think of things for an RGB collegeAU. I’m honestly surprised with the notes I’ve been getting but I’m just happy that there are people who enjoy what my brain mites create
Python • Computer science major specializing in software engineering • He’s on scholarships/bursaries but you’ll never hear him boast about it • If you want help on how to apply for aid/scholarships/bursaries, Python’s your guy • For some reason, you always see him around campus working some sort of part-time job. He’s everywhere. He’s also one of the school’s photographers (He doesn’t own his own camera, he borrows one from the Arts-Photography department) • Worst college diet. Pasta with just some salt, rice gruel with salt or soy sauce, discounted bread or the cheapest ramen noodles, and beer. Lots of beer. • Python won’t talk about his financial situation but he’s supporting himself. That’s all you need to know and he’s willing to say • Wears the same clothes, rarely goes thrift shopping. Some of his clothes are from Forsyth or Lukas • Much to his dismay, the school signed him up for a vocational program over the summer to learn about computer hardware. He’s the assistant of the school’s MIS/IT support, he gets paid though. • ALWAYS NAPPING IN BETWEEN CLASS AND EVEN DURING CLASS. Python manages to get great marks though • He’s a gamer, he streams for some extra cash. You wonder how he crams all of this into his schedule. • He really likes this one schoolmate and can’t get them out of his mind. He’ll never talk about it or make a move just yet given his financial situation. But he’s always playfully teasing this one person or texting them up with a warm smile on his face (read: that’s you READER, I encourage you to insert yourself into this AU if you love this snek as much as I do)
Forsyth • Social sciences major! He specializes in criminology. He wants to become a detective • Forsyth has also thought of becoming a lawyer • Forsyth makes sure Python gets to class on time. Even if he has to carry his lazy (read: overworked and sleep-deprived) friend to class. It’s happened, ONCE. He carried Python bridal style into class. (Python didn’t care and wore shades for good measure) • HE’S IN THE STUDENT COUNCIL! Energetically encourages people to attend school events. • Definitely in a varsity team. Maybe soccer or ultimate frisbee • The go-to person if you have any problems in school, suggestions, or topics you want to raise since the dean of students/chancellor/heads actually listen to him from time to time (read: they can’t say no to his enthusiasm) • Most people like him or tolerate him. Although there are a few who can’t handle his disposition • Volunteers everywhere! He can’t say no to a person in need • Forsyth is always seen in the campus fundraising bake sales, he loves sweets • As a freshman, he was head-over-heels for an upperclassman and made a grand gesture to woo them. It didn’t go well, unfortunately. But recently he’s been seen with an incumbent student council member, and their chemistry is undeniable (All the Forsyth lovers in the back scream “I’m a Forsyth to be reckoned with”) • He has a merit grant/scholarship, its an “exemplary student leader” thing • His backpack has his school stuff, training/gym gear. His everyday carry is big, you worry about his back. • Oh, Forsyth lives 10 minutes away from campus with Lukas and Python, he either walks or bikes. Yes, even during winter. He’s an unstoppable force. • The green bean is responsible for more vegan and vegetarian cafeteria options
Lukas • Psychology major, he’s not aiming to be a therapist or practice clinical psychiatry. Lukas intends to be a researcher specializing in memory and learning. Yes, he wants to become the dude that asks you to remember a sequence of numbers or letters under various controlled situations. • His older brother is in the school of law. Lukas was supposed to enroll there but his older brother prevented him. He’s happier in Psych anyways so it's not too bad • Rich kid. Rents a 5 bedroom house with Forsyth and Python. He’s looking for 2 more tenants (Reader that’s your cue) • He’s a student assistant and a tutor in the campus’ academic learning Center. He’s very popular and often fully booked for appointments. Whether this is because he’s an excellent student tutor or he has many adoring fans is up for debate. • Every now and then, he has a job at the library as an assistant • Lukas has a car but rarely drives it because he lives 10 minutes away • He smokes but is trying to quit. He only ever smokes after he’s had a heated argument with his older brother • An officer in the student council, how he juggles this between tutoring, student assistant work, and his course load is a mystery. Actually, it's not, he’s got great time management skills and is very disciplined. • Part of the “fancy-schmancy” fencing club, he’s only there because that’s the only place he can whoop his older brothers ass. Kidding, he’s there because his father pressured him into joining. • Lukas has been seen spending more and more time with a fellow student tutor. He’s the one doing most of the approaching and making an effort to spend time with them. They’re often seen in the commons or library having “study dates”. (This one is for the ginger stud lovers out there)

I SCREAM YOU SCREAM WE ALL SCREAM FOR
textbooks
As i come out of winter hibernation...
I'm both excited and afraid for my semester. I have a generally easy senior year going on to update you guys with:
Independent Research
I'm hopefully presenting at NCUR! I'm a sucker for cute robots
CAD Customs and Standards
This will finish my minor in EDG and I'll have a nice minor to pair with my SOLIDWORKS CSWP certification. So far I have no idea what this class would be other than "this is what it should look like and it's your job to make it look like this" essentially engineering management training
Machine Design
This one is a big oof. My professor was a bro and sent out a welcome email and pdf.

Okay, not too bad or shabby

I'm excited so show you guys more engineering notes porn!

😂... 😅...😄...🤔...😣...😫...😭... 🤓

OKAY YES
I've been preparing myself for this. Did you guys know MATLAB r2019a will have Battle Royale?

#excited2code
I'm getting two textbooks for this course:
It's a sequential set of courses culminated in a year long final project to show off to the department that you actually learned something
THIS IS LIKE 200 DOLLARS
*cries for bank account as that noise from electronic monopoly drains the account when you have to pay someone
I've been programming in Arduino, C++ and Python so long, honestly I forgot about the nuances of MATLAB.
Basicslly I'm just starting my dissertation for my undergraduate mechanical engineering degree. I have a rough idea on what I personally want to present:
Senior Design 1
Control systems related
Robotics related
Neural network related

Cute af
So my thoughts basicslly align to a robot that can preform some autonomous task but it fits still into the mechanical engineering world and not purely what my research has been (applied computer science and/or mechatronics)
Heat Transfer Lab
I think a bunch of cool videos will come out of here. It's basicslly all the junk I learned and showed off last semester, but ~applied~
Band
I PLAY TRUMPET 🎺
DOOT DOOT
Despite playing for close to 10 years, I still suck. It's because I don't practice 😅
I'll have a lot of fun blogging about my adventures in this semester and all of the cool stuff I'll learn.

Spin To Win
The last few years have provided me with an endless array of stories to tell and opportunities to scrutinize both the good and bad as companies tried to survive. Some rolled over and died quickly, while others put up a valiant fight, little different from that scene in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The Black Knight refused to die, to the point of silly resistance. Bravado can only carry the day for so long.
To be honest, a few months ago I would have thought that Peloton was the new Black Knight. Having ridden the crest of stationary bike and treadmill sales during COVID, the company found itself in deep trouble once restrictions lifted and people started going outdoors once more. Suddenly they were stuck with massive amounts of unsold inventory, and their DTC (direct-to-consumer) business model was failing. After all, it can be a hard sell spending more than $2000 sight unseen.
But after numerous personnel changes, distribution agreements with Dick’s Sporting Goods and Amazon, outsourcing manufacturing, inking a deal with Hilton for exclusivity in hotel gyms, and the launch of a subscription program to structure workouts, the company is actually showing some signs of life. It’s almost like the Black Knight sprouted new limbs.

Not all is perfect, of course, but things are much better. Cash burn last quarter was “only” $94 million, while a year ago it was $547 million. Sales of hardware are down, but subs are up. As a result, investors are becoming cautiously bullish on Peloton stock, which surged 26% yesterday.
Letting others bear the burdens of manufacturing and distribution is genius. Essentially, Peloton is now in the software subscription business, which allows them to be a much leaner corporation.
The challenge will be in getting all those previous customers to sign up. At least new customers will know in advance that this is the drill. I have to wonder how many of those Peloton bikes and treadmills purchased during COVID have now become expensive clothing racks. Home exercise equipment often winds up this way.
And then there is the difficulty of retaining subscribers once you have them. I consider indoor training to be cruel and unusual punishment. I would much rather beg outdoors on my bike than creating a puddle beneath my trainer. Even in winter, I am outdoors about half the time, but in summer, it is all the time.
Even still, I cannot get on board with a workout tied to software. I know…some people can. Yesterday I simply fired up a concert video on YouTube, turned up the volume, and did my hour of self-inflicted agony. It was better than nothing—the couch always beckons, you know—and the dopamine was flowing nicely afterward, but I would much rather be burning up the road.
While there are some serious glimmers of hope for Peloton, I am not completely convinced they will make it. We have entered into the subscription overload zone these days, between streaming this and that, activity trackers, and so forth. They all sound so cheap in isolation, but taken together can become quite a drain on monthly incomes.
And yet Peloton is still here, beaten and bruised, but not yet down for the count. This may be one of those stories we tell years ahead of a company clenching victory from the jaws of death. As long as they can keep it on the road, though.

The 2018 Moments
Hey, let’s break the silence in this blog with a review of 2018, shall we? Hereby I’ll try to list some significant moments/things/ones that I consider influential in 2018. Something that in the future --maybe when I’m waiting for my flight-- would randomly pop up and “Hey, I remember that!”. That does not mean that these things are only temporary moments; it’s the opposite. They might have lingering effects that may influence me for the upcoming years…
Here goes!
Friends
I started off 2018 in Budapest with my friends as part of a week-long winter trip. Of course we had a lot of fun, but we also had some up-and-down moments. We started off our trip visiting the concentration camp in Auschwitz. It felt dark, sad and depressing...but it was such a valuable lesson of history. We often slept on the train or bus while navigating to different cities: comfortable beds were not our everyday thing during the trip. Also, Eastern Europe was dazzling cold. As it was our first ever European trip, we were quite ambitious to visit 6 cities merely in the span of 7 days...so indeed, our energy was drained. As you can guess: with that condition, conflict arose, everyone got more sensitive (including me). But don’t get me wrong, Eastern Europe is so beautiful!
All in all, those moments were the ones that tightened our bond. We learn to understand each other’s character and we didn’t stop hanging out ever since. We even went for another trip to Italy in the summer and I think it was one of those so-called moments of lifetime. Although we won’t meet that often again, I hope we’ll retain our bond even after we graduate 😊

Geoscripting
Geoscripting is a course title. Probably the best course I’ve ever taken during my master study. This traced back further into late-2017 though, when I decided to take the Python class. You know, programming has always been a daunting subject ever since I was in my bachelor study. I know it is important, but no matter how hard I tried, I always gave up. I really want to be able to code.
Among the recommended courses that I can take during the first period of my study was Python. I hesitated at first, because sometimes you would want to take the ‘safe’ path, especially when it is among the first class you take abroad; not to mention its relatively low passing rate (less than 60%). But then, screw the safe path! I took it anyway and I think it was one of the best decisions in my life.
Early 2018 was the time when I took the continuation course: Geoscripting, where you also code, but specifically in the wonderful geo-domain. I felt scripting has opened up a novel path in my life, a broad lane that I’d like to pursue. I know for sure, that my future, my career, would follow that path 😊 The future of geo-information is in scripting. Desktop GIS would get outdated pretty soon.
Spatial modelling and statistics
With the best course comes the toughest course. I think it was in this period that I felt the lowest, frustrated and fed up. I just could not comprehend the material. The sentences in the reader felt too long and complicated to understand. At some point I just skipped a class and went to the park just to calm my nerve.
But again, I am glad that I took this class. The professor, Gerard, was the best professor I’ve ever had. I know he is an expert, but it is amazing how he can just put himself among the students. His patience and the way he explained was super clear. I think it was him that kept me going; without such motivation I wouldn’t be able to pass the course.
Such figure is the kind of person I would like to be. I want to be an expert in my field, and when I do, I’d like to be able to put myself on other’s feet. Explain something as simple as possible, stay humble and hungry. I think that’s one way to show the significance of my expertise as well 😊

Reunion
My family came to visit me in Europe. It was 1997 when we left Paris, and after 21 years, the three of us came back. Gare du Nord was the place that we reunited. It was so memorable. My parents stayed for about 3 weeks in Europe, but we dedicated 10 days merely in Paris. And I still felt it was not enough..or maybe just the right amount. Every corner of the marvelous city has special story for us: that my parents can tell the name of each stop of RER B because it’s their everyday commute, that we used to eat at Flunch often because it was cheap and delicious (and still is!), that my mom and I used to wait at that Monthuchet bus stop when it’s time for my dad to come home, and a lot more. Countless.
I still shed my tear everytime I remember this. It is not an exaggeration that Paris holds such a special value for us, both happy and sad. And I feel really blessed that the three of us were able to walk down the Avenue des Champs-Élysées last year.
Thank you, God.

Cousin
Yup, my cousin, he came! He is also starting his study in Wageningen last year. It’s great to have a family while we’re living abroad like this. It also means more adventure. In fact, we went to Morocco last year. Hopefully more adventures would come!

Thesis
I started working on my thesis after the summer break last year. Looking back and seeing my progress now, I feel that a lot of things can be improved, particularly my time management. When I’ve been working with them for several straight days, I find it difficult to concentrate. Also, I got tired quite quickly. Usually at 9-10 I already went to the bed...although I have this weird habit of sleeping exactly 6 hours, so I always wake up around 4 in the morning. But I didn’t went straight working again, so I thought I should be able to use my time more effectively.
However, I am really happy with my supervisor. I feel like this is my first time doing ‘real’ research with a supervisor. We meet regularly and we always have a lively discussion. We think and we solve problem together. That’s amazing. Sorry to say, but it is unlike my previous experience when I worked with my bachelor thesis: I had to work super independently, with no one to discuss with (because my topic was quite weird anyway). At that time, I think I only met my supervisor about 2-3 times..for the whole thesis! It’s crazy if I think about it now.
I’m also glad about my thesis topic choice. I worked a lot with coding, with R… Combining spatial analysis with data science, which is the direction I’d like to follow for my career. Frustration popped up at times, but it’s part of the process!
