A question about what Wojciech Pszoniak’s Robespierre would’ve looked like if he had glasses turned into one of the only art pieces I’ve been proud of in months (thanks Robespierre)
Seriously I don’t think I’ve ever managed to shade skin this well
Andrzej Wajda wanted Camille (Olgierd Łukaszewicz) to wear only a bathrobe and to open it during his conversation with Robespierre (Wojciech Pszoniak) in his staging of The Danton Case, but the actor didn't agree.
The fact we had Bogusław Linda and Wojciech Pszoniak [lgbt allies] casted as SJ and Robespierre in a movie based around the play of Przybyszewska [who openly wrote about homoerotic feelings in frev] and somehow the director still managed to make it homophobic is still surreal to me.
“Gérard Depardieu and Wojciech Pszoniak star in Andrzej Wajda’s powerful, intimate depiction of the ideological clash between the earthy, man-of-the-people Georges Danton and icy Jacobin extremist Maximilien Robespierre, both key figures of the French Revolution. By drawing parallels to Polish ‘solidarity,’ a movement that was being quashed by the government as the film went into production, Wajda drags history into the present. Meticulous and fiery, Danton has been hailed as one of the greatest films ever made about the Terror. ...”
Found a very nice collection of the Danton photos here! There are about 100 of them, including behind the scenes pics. Haven’t seen some of them before. (More examples under the cut)
The Promised Land (1975).At the turn of the century, Lodz, Poland was a quick-paced manufacturing center for textiles, replete with cutthroat industrialists and unsafe working conditions. Three young friends, a Pole, a Jew and a German, pool their money together to build a factory. The movie follows their ruthless pursuit of fortune.
God, this is a good film. Complex, rich and epic, it explores the pifalls of capitalism in a way that feels timeless, despite being a 1970s film set in the 1800s. It’s beautifully shot too, with some really brilliant performances. That said, the pacing can be a bit hairy - particularly in the first act - and the film’s probably about a half hour longer than it needs to be. 8.5/10.
