*Note: This post isn't about if this Ken in the Barbie movie is going to be queer but that he is inspired by a Ken doll that "accidently" became a queer icon. Ryan Gosling's Ken in Barbie(2023) is based on the famous best selling Ken doll, Earring Magic Ken, also know as Fey Ken or Gay Ken.
"Mattel had conducted a survey of girls asking if Ken should be retained as Barbie's boyfriend or whether a new doll should be introduced in that role. Survey results indicated that girls wanted Ken kept but wanted him to look "cooler". USA Today noted after the American International Toy Fair that the doll Soul Train Jamal was also wearing an earring that year. According to manager of marketing communications for Mattel, Lisa McKendall, "We tried to keep [Ken] as cool as possible." This generation of the Ken doll had blond highlights in his traditionally brown hair and was dressed in a lavender mesh shirt, purple pleather vest, a necklace with a circular charm and, as the name indicates, an earring in his left ear.
These clothing choices led to gay commentator Dan Savage joking that Mattel toy designers had "spent a weekend in LA or New York dashing from rave to rave, taking notes and Polaroids." He also suggested that little girls' idea of coolness was shaped by homoerotic MTV music videos, Madonna's dancers, and what ACT UP/Queer Nation members were wearing to demonstrations and parties. Donna Gibbs told the San Francisco Examiner in November 1993 that the team of (presumably straight) women who made the doll were surprised that gay men wanted him.
[...]
In July 1993, Dan Savage wrote an article on Earring Magic Ken titled, "Ken Comes Out." He noted in his article that, in addition to his outfit's perceived flamboyance, his necklace resembled chrome sex toys that queer people were wearing as charms at the time. Savage expressed feelings of ambivalence about Ken's new style, writing, "Queer Ken is the high water mark of, depending on your point of view, either queer infiltration of popular culture or the thoughtless appropriation of queer culture by heterosexuals [. . .] Queer imagery has so permeated our culture that from rock stars (Axl Rose and his leather chaps) to toy designers, mainstream America isn’t even aware when it’s adopting queer fashions and mores."
[...]
Kitsch-minded gay men responded to this press by buying the doll in record numbers, making Earring Magic Ken the best-selling Ken model in Mattel's history. The doll debuted in stores for around $11 (equivalent to $20.63 in 2021) and had completely sold out by the Christmas season, largely due to gay men buying the doll in droves. Due to high demand, Chicago's FAO Schwartz created a wait list, and, allegedly, some shops in San Francisco began to sell Earring Magic Ken for prices ranging between $17 (equivalent to $31.89 in 2021) to $24 (equivalent to $45.02 in 2021). (The latter claim was disputed in the Bay Area Reporter in October 1993 by the general manager of San Francisco FAO Schwartz. According to him, only a few gay men were coming into his store, and Earring Magic Ken was selling better in New York and Chicago than San Francisco.) Earring Magic Ken was also popular with gay men in the United Kingdom, and sold well at the toy shop Hamleys in 1993. Toy scalper Mr. Barger told the Wall Street Journal in 1996 that Earring Magic Ken was so popular that he was able to re-sell him to specialty shops at premium prices. Richard Roeper, writing for the Chicago Sun Times, referred to him as "The Cabbage Patch Doll of the summer of '93."
A major appeal of the doll for many gay men was that Mattel did not market it to them on purpose. Rick Garcia, director of Chicago's Catholic Advocates for Lesbian and Gay Rights, told People magazine in 1993 that the stereotypical dress was funny to him because he believed it was an accident, and that it would have offended him if it was purposeful. In 1993, many newspapers interviewed individual gay men in California to understand the phenomenon. San Francisco resident described Earring Magic Ken as, "a pariah setting foot in one of America's sanctuaries." Another California resident, Bill Harley, described Earring Magic Ken as, "A campy, funny thing to have." Laguna Beach resident Keith Clark-Epley had more reservations about the toy, saying that, "It's an uptight heterosexual male doll following gay fashion and who is still behind the times," and believed that calling the doll gay could potentially reinforce negative stereotypes about gay people." ~ ~ ~
After quickly unpacking a few of her belongings, Riley made her way out of her assigned room on a mission to explore the palace boutique’s options. Luckily for her, Maxwell had told her that the store was located on the ground floor near the front entrance.
A few minutes later, Riley pushed past the doors into the boutique. The soft pink walls contrasted nicely with the brown mahogany floors and the light gray floor rug covering the entire ground. A silver chandelier with bell-shaped glass shades hung directly in the middle of the room. Several mannequins dressed in various formal attire for men and women were scattered across the rooms.
Absentmindedly, Riley brushed her hand against the silk and satin dresses placed on one of many racks on display. The closest she had ever gotten to seeing such beautiful formal dresses was outside display windows of luxury stores on her way to school and work.
“Oh!” A girl yelped out, stepping out of a changing room and holding a dress.
Startled with the sudden voice, Riley looked over her shoulder to see who it was. However, when she noticed that the girl was only dressed in her underwear, Riley quickly turned back around. While she felt a hint of excitement to meet new people up close and personal, this wasn’t exactly what she had in mind.
“Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry!” Riley apologized, feeling embarrassed at seeing a stranger looking so vulnerable. “I didn’t realize someone was already here. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have just barged in.”
With Riley’s back turned, the girl quickly draped the curtain of the changing room over her body to cover herself. Only her head poked out, a sign she was eager to invite Riley into a conversation.
“Oh, it’s no problem at all. To be honest, I didn’t have an appointment. I forgot to book one before my flight landed a few hours ago but thought I would peruse down here before it became too crowded,” the girl sheepishly replied, making Riley turn around to see her friendly smile. “I’m Hana. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
Pleasantly surprised with the girl’s bright kindness to a stranger like her, Riley gave a smile in return. “You too. My name’s Riley.”
“I suppose you’re also here to prepare for the Masquerade tonight,” Hana replied, before disappearing behind the curtain to pull on the dress she was holding. “Since you’re here and not already dressed, I must assume that you’re just like me… searching desperately for something to wear.”
“More or less,” Riley replied, with a relaxed laugh. Her neck craned around to catch short glimpses of the dresses in the boutique, wondering how on earth she would be able to narrow it down with the surprising variety.
“The seamstress seems to be running late, but I can show you around! The boutique has the most exquisite gowns. Quite a few of them were shipped just this morning,” Hana answered, pulling the curtain to the side. “Let me just zip this dress up and we can look for one for you!”
Walking to a floor-length mirror, Hana faced her reflection to note her appearance. There was an immense amount of pressure on her from her parents to make a good first impression on the nobility during the court’s social season. She took a deep breath, examining the rose gold laced bodice with rhinestones and a matching floor-length satin skirt.
Her hands arched around her back, trying to get a firm grasp on the tiny zipper. Replaying her parents’ never-ending lectures in her mind about securing the hand of the prince, she felt a slight tremble in her grip and found herself unable to zip herself in the dress. What was she going to do if she failed to secure his attention?
“Need a hand?” Riley offered, admiring how confident and poised Hana looked in front of the mirror with her masquerade outfit.
With a relieved laugh, Hana answered, “That would be amazing.”
Making her way behind Hana, Riley grasped hold of the zipper and slid it all the way up. On a nearby side table, Hana picked up a salmon pink mask with gold accents that matched her dress perfectly. She carefully settled it on her face, making her happily sigh with a satisfied smile.
Turning to face Riley with a grin, Hana complimented, “Thank you. It’s a pity that not many girls here are like you.”
“Helpful?” Riley asked, a smile on her face at Hana’s comment.
“Genuinely nice,” Hana explained, with a simple knowing nod. “It would make the social season much less intimidating if we were here to converse as ladies instead of constantly viewing each other as competition.”
If Drake was right about the ruthlessness of noble ladies, it seemed Riley had found a rare ally in her. Unbeknownst to her, Hana held the same sentiments. Most ladies would secretly turn their noses up at her out of jealousy, let alone help her—something Hana was used to growing up as a noble.
Hana spun for Riley, her full skirts twirling as she giggled. “Ah, this dress is perfect! Now, what about you? One must have a mask for the Masquerade!”The two girls perused through racks of dresses, holding up possible options to the other for a second opinion. Ten minutes later, Hana’s eyes widened in excitement as she pulled two garment bags from a rack. “Have you seen the angel costume? You’d look amazing in white,” Hana suggested, eagerly holding up the white dress in her right hand and the other dress in her left hand. “Or there’s also a red one, if you’re feeling more devilish.”
“I’ll take a look.” Riley giggled, as Hana handed her both garment bags.
Inside a dressing room, Riley eyed the first costume meant to resemble a sultry devil. The crimson red colour of the strapless dress was striking along with sections made of mesh lace fabric highlighting embroidered patterns. Along with the dress were two devil horn accessories and a bold black mask with sparkling rhinestones.
Ultimately, Riley decided on the angel costume that Hana first suggested. It was much simpler with its draped off shoulder straps, a sweetheart neckline, and a shimmery sparkle that brightened the pure white colour. After stepping out of the changing room, Riley fixed the matching halo accessory on top of her head and plucked a detailed silver mask off of the table.
“How do I look?” Riley asked with a smile, giving a little twirl similar to the one Hana had done moments ago.
Hana’s face brightened up, as she grinned and the two made their way out of the boutique. “Heavenly! A costume as angelic as the girl wearing it.”

Kotoko Harrow Themes
I noticed that there seems to be a...vague take of Kotoko's Themes in Harrow that I sort of don't agree with. To summarize based on what the MV showed us, Kotoko's entire deal is about:
🔸Preying/exploitation of the weak (Children and Elderly). 🔸Exploitation of Power (Serial Killer's rich dad, the apartment towers) 🔸Cannibalism of the Weak / Parasite (Mikio Oshii, Paper bag robbery couple). 🔸Exploitation and Objectification of Women and Repressed Desires (Pervert at the Train Station taking Pictures).
Let's get more in-depth of the scenarios playing out.
You can read more about the articles in detail over here.
Kotoko's family dynamic and implications. Wolves travel in packs to support each other. As mentioned in Kotoko's interrogation, her family structure is as follows. Grandmother, father, mother and older brother. You will notice there is 4 Wolves and Kotoko. Meaning 5 family members!
Tumblr media
I think it's interesting that grandma is living with Kotoko's family. Because this could imply something about their financial structure family-wise!
Tumblr media
When grandparents and grandchildren live together usually means their grandparents are well-off.
But! people's lifestyles in Tokyo are kind of complex, it's also possible that the family has no choice but to live in the grandparent's house. Like the children had problems with their family relationships/needed to care for their frail grandparents etc.
The reason I brought up Tokyo is because in Kotoko's Prisoner HD card sent to Premium App users, it's said that she lives in Akasuka, Tokyo. However, it's most likely that they're rich considering Kotoko has money to burn to bribe a journalist.
Tumblr media
There are 2 major crimes that I believe is a great clue to their own family life. Kotoko places great interest in the warning sign which says a person has been dropped near the vicinity of their home.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you check the first minute of Kotoko's MV as she is waking up, you will see a wolf paw for a split second, A wolf's pelt on the ground, before the lighting strikes, a flash of its eye (important for later) and shows the wolf alive again. The pelt is gone from the ground and replaced.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think Kotoko used to have a little sister. The black haired girl wearing pink clothes in particular because we see the shots as if they were from her memories as the MV goes on.
Tumblr media
This girl is visible as a flashback despite having a different victim on the last part of the video as seen here:
Tumblr media
Some of the details of the murder are shown as if they're from Kotoko's memories. If you read the previous articles from the other blog post, none of the articles talk about how the Serial Killer killed his victims aside from throwing them on the street nearby the vicinity of their houses.
Meaning she's intimately aware of the Killer's modus operandi because their family was a victim of this serial killer.
Tumblr media
You will also notice a lady in white dress lying down after being hit by the hammer. I believe this is Kotoko's grandmother / monster because of the body physique. None of the articles talk about this as far as I can remember.
Tumblr media
These memories keep flashing by as Kotoko goes solo. Then, when finally given the chance, his is the wolf that is with her in the shelter and the one that eggs her on to kick this serial killer's ass. You will also notice they put great emphasis on the wolf's eye at the beginning of the video. Giving them a strong link.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To recap, the reason we have so much emphasis on two exact crimes:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
🔸The Serial Killer killed the little sister and possibly the grandmother. The Serial killer also keeps getting away with it because his father is a politician. His face is fully visible in one of the frames.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
🔸Mikio Oshii scammed the elderly and stole "luxury" bikes. It's likely that their family was scammed as well. Kotoko killed him while wearing men's clothing to get away with it. It is one of the news articles talking about her vigilante activities.
Kotoko losing her pack one by one could be a financial ruin because of the scams and the death of the little sister.
What's interesting is what happens near the end. Kotoko's chair is replaced with a pelt...Is she...still alive?
Tumblr media
That is all for now. Thank you!

( ANA DE ARMAS . CISFEMALE . SHE/HER ) - the chicago resident , ( LUISA ‘LUZ’ ACERO ) , was heard blaring ( IGUAL QUE UN ÁNGEL / KALI UCHIS ) this morning . the ( THIRTY-TWO ) year old is ( UNEMPLOYED ) in the city & has lived the ( EAST ) tower for ( ONE YEAR ) . since being here , they have been told to be ( - SARCASTIC ) , but also ( + FLIRTY ) , i guess we’ll find out soon !
Luisa had no illusions about her life. Born in a small home in Santa Clara, her father was a dishwasher and her mother was a maid both at the same swanky hotel for tourists, both hardworking and trying their best, trying to make something of themselves as best they could. Luz realized at a young age though that, no matter how hard they worked, it never really mattered. Nothing they owned was really theirs. Sure they had a place to live, had food, had possessions, but…at the end of the day, all that could be taken away by the snap of fingers if the hotel owner (or some snooty guest) wanted to cause problems. They lived their life tiptoeing by.
Luz wanted more than that for herself. She wanted more than cooking and cleaning and being at someone else's beck and call. So when she found ways to do that...she jumped at it, morals be damned.
Luisa was barely sixteen the first time she not only slept with someone, but was paid for it too. Her virginity for enough money to buy extra food for them for a week? Easy deal. And then she kept at it, covertly sleeping with men (and women on occasion) in exchange for food and money. She soon caught the attention of higher up hotel guests too, and while they could use her as they wanted for a pretty penny, she started coercing them into giving her more. Eventually, along with food and money, she could sometimes get gifts. Clothes and jewelry, makeup. Anything she could want until she was old enough to have an actual job. She doubled down on her beliefs then. She didn’t want to be a maid. Or a waitress. Or anything like that. She was good at sleeping with people…good at being a good time. So she ran with it, all covertly under her parents' nose.
For years it went on like that, with Luz earning enough money from her clientele that she not only got her parents a better place to live, but she got them out of their jobs altogether. And when she was twenty-five, she earned a best gift of all: a way off the island. The US had always been the dream after all, a goal that never quite seemed attainable--until now.
Her mother had a cousin in Miami that took them in once they arrived, and with her parents squared away, Luz decided to do life on her own now, heading north to New York (she'd had a few hotel guests always inviting her to the city after all, promising her more money and jewels if she ever took them up on it). And for years, Luz did just that, happily hanging off the arm of some well-off man, wearing pretty dresses and expensive jewels in exchange for, well, not a whole lot of effort on her part. Finally last year though, she decided a change of scenery was in order and headed off to Chicago, an old client telling her she'd have fun there- which she definitely has. And while she still has some clients here and there looking for more of the high end escort type, she's found an equally-fun way of getting cash quick in ways of being a cam girl. Her Onlyfans is not only premium content, but an easy way to connect with clients old and new--all from the comforts of her bedroom.
And sure Luz would one day like to actually have someone want her for her and not just her body, she'd like to maybe even one day get a real job, but until then, she could at least make sure she was financially secured so she'd never, ever, have to struggle in the ways her parents did.

Embrace Timeless Style: Women's Leather Jackets
Tumblr media
When it comes to fashion staples that effortlessly blend style and functionality, few pieces can match the timeless appeal of women's leather jackets. From classic cuts to modern designs, leather jackets have evolved from their utilitarian origins into versatile wardrobe essentials that exude confidence and sophistication.
History and Evolution
The history of women's leather jackets traces back to the early 20th century when they were primarily worn by aviators and military personnel for their durability and protection against the elements. Over time, these rugged garments transitioned into symbols of rebellion and counterculture, popularized by icons like Marlon Brando and James Dean in the 1950s.
In the decades that followed, leather jackets became synonymous with edgy fashion statements, embraced by both men and women seeking to express their individuality. However, it wasn't until the late 20th century that women's leather jackets gained widespread popularity as a chic and versatile outerwear option.
Style and Versatility
Today, women's leather jackets come in a myriad of styles, catering to various tastes and occasions. The classic biker jacket, characterized by its asymmetrical zipper and snug fit, remains a perennial favorite among those who appreciate its rebellious edge and timeless appeal. Pair it with jeans and boots for a casual yet polished look, or throw it over a dress for a touch of urban sophistication.
For those seeking a more refined silhouette, the moto jacket offers a sleek alternative with its tailored fit and minimalist design. Ideal for both work and play, this versatile piece can effortlessly elevate any outfit, whether worn with tailored trousers or draped over a blouse and skirt ensemble.
Meanwhile, the bomber jacket continues to captivate fashion enthusiasts with its sporty yet chic aesthetic. Originally designed for pilots during World War I, the bomber jacket has since been reimagined with luxurious leather and contemporary detailing, making it a coveted choice for those who appreciate its blend of comfort and style.
Quality and Craftsmanship
One of the enduring appeals of women's leather jackets lies in their craftsmanship and durability. Crafted from premium hides such as lambskin or cowhide, these jackets are meticulously designed to withstand the test of time while developing a unique patina that enhances their character with each wear. From hand-stitched seams to carefully curated hardware, every detail is a testament to the artisanal expertise that goes into creating these coveted garments.
Iconic Brands and Trends
Numerous iconic brands have left their mark on the world of women's leather jackets, each offering distinct interpretations of this classic outerwear piece. From high-end fashion houses like Burberry and Gucci to specialized labels such as All Saints and Schott NYC, there's a leather jacket to suit every style sensibility, and budget.
In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest sustainably and ethically, prompting many brands to embrace eco-friendly practices and materials in their production processes. Vegan leather alternatives, crafted from materials like polyurethane or recycled fibers, offer conscientious consumers a cruelty-free option without compromising on style or quality.
Conclusion
In conclusion, women's leather jackets continue to captivate fashion enthusiasts with their timeless appeal, versatility, and craftsmanship. Whether you prefer the rugged allure of a classic biker jacket or the understated elegance of a tailored moto jacket, there's a style to suit every taste and occasion. As trends evolve and fashion landscapes shift, one thing remains certain: the enduring allure of women's leather jackets as enduring symbols of style, sophistication, and individuality.

A Dance In The Candlelight (Masquerade AU Levi x Female Reader)
Tumblr media
Interested in a Commission? Ko-fi Premium Fanfiction | Commission Information
Tumblr media
The atmosphere was perfect; twinkling candlelights lined the ballroom, creating an intimate glow. White and light blue decorations adorned the walls, and each table was covered with matching tablecloths and flowers. Servers were dressed head to toe in blue suits and gracefully weaved through the crowds, bowing to the guests before offering drinks and exquisite appetizers.
Tonight’s masquerade theme was “Endless dreams.” Everyone looked like they were out of a fairytale. Women dressed in the most extravagant dresses of all different hues, and the men matched their date’s outfits in color and extravagance. The masks were always the best part, allowing each guest to add flair to the outfit, making them stand out from the rest.
There was one woman in particular who stood out from the rest, captivating the gazes of men and women alike. She wore a light blue ballgown with a sweetheart neckline, the dress’s bodice adorned with lace, while the skirt shimmered in the candlelight. She was a natural beauty and downright stunning with her makeup. Nobody knew who she was, her mask always obscuring enough of her face to keep her identity hidden, but she was a staple figure at these events.
She was approached by many when the waltz started to play. A bow or a curtsy was always given before offering a hand to lead her to dance. Yet, she never accepted a dance from anyone, no matter who they may be. She became a sort of unattainable idol at these events.
There was one simple reason she never accepted a dance from anyone, and it was because of him. He didn’t always show, but she could hardly take her eyes off him when he did. It didn’t matter what the theme of the masquerade was. He would always wear the same black suit and plain black mask. He was mysterious, always standing off to the side, never dancing. So many try, and he always turns them down just as she does.
She knew she shouldn’t be pining over a stranger like this, but something about him drew her in. The few times he would catch her staring were electrifying for her. Their eyes meeting always made her heart flutter. She felt such a deep connection to this stranger. She wished for him to appear before her and offer his hand.
But… He never did. In fact, they hadn’t ever spoken before. Was he shy? Did he despise dancing? Or did he unwilling to dance with her? It had been eating away at her for a while now, but she decided tonight was the night she got her answer.
When she was finally alone, she started her search for the stranger. She found him in his usual spot, leaning against one of the walls, away from the crowds and dancers, nursing a flute of champagne.
As she approached, she could feel her heart beating out of her chest and part of her thought about abandoning her plan. She would be utterly humiliated if he rejected her offer of a dance. But he quickly took notice of her, his eyes trailing along her body for a brief moment, and she couldn’t back out now.
She took a hesitant breath as she stood before him, gently grabbing the fabric of her ball gown to curtsy before looking back up at him.
“Would you like to dance?”
As she spoke, she held out her hand for him to take. Even with how nervous she was, she remained poised. Yet, it felt as though he was staring straight into her soul. It was as if all of her feelings were on display for him at that very moment.
Those few seconds waiting for his reply felt like an eternity for her, never once breaking his cold stare. After a few more moments, he downed the last of his champagne, setting the empty glass on the table next to him.
“Took you long enough to ask.”
His voice was velvety smooth, and hearing him agree to her dance sent shivers down her spine. She hadn’t expected him to agree so quickly. Had she heard him right? She might have questioned it if he hadn’t reached out to take her hand, gently guiding her to the middle of the room to dance. Many stared at the two of them, whispers spreading throughout the ballroom as they took their place with the other couples.
They were both quick on their feet, matching the tempo of the music playing, dancing along with the other couples. He was a proficient dancer, the two of them floating across the room, spinning in circles. His hand on her hip was gentle yet firm, keeping her in place as he took the lead the entire time. She hadn’t expected him to be so proficient at dancing as he spent all his time hiding away in the corner.
Even though the two never spoke during the dance, they were focused on no one else. It was as if the rest of the room didn’t exist, and it was just the two dancing… even the music started to fade away. The gaze they held with such intensity said more than words ever could, both of them had felt the same way about each other since the beginning.
The song felt as though it lasted for hours yet ended far too soon for her liking. As they parted, the stranger gave a slight bow to her as a thank-you for the dance. She had been wrapped up in the dance she hadn’t learned a single thing about the stranger, and as he turned around to leave, she called out to him
“Wait!”
He was only a few steps away from her as he stopped to hear what she had to say, never looking back at her.
“May I know your name?”
“Levi”
“Thank you… Levi”
