controversial, but as someone who's spent the last year tearing her hair out adjudicating student conduct cases involving AI misuse: i'm never going to be impressed by an anti-AI post that sounds like an abstinence-only educator wrote it
it goes without saying that AI as implemented has many problems.* it fills me with a low-level sense of dread! but some of you seem to think that if we teach the children to Just Say No, it will go away. which...maybe this is because i work with engineering students but that sounds about as likely as email going away (and that message is just about as likely to resonate with kids as The Internet Is Evil So Stay Off).
students are graduating into a workforce that requires them to use AI. it is, in certain contexts, an appropriate tool. so between an engineer who's never touched AI in their life and one who's had a thorough education in it--who knows what it can and can't do; what it can and can't be trusted with--i'd pick the latter every time.
like, they're going to build the airplanes for christ's sake. they're going to be handed AI, usually of higher quality than public-facing chatgpt but still. i don't want them graduating with the sense that AI is a Forbidden All-Knowing Cheating Machine instead of something they've spent time understanding the limitations of. i want them to understand which programs work for which tasks, and which don't work at all. and that requires active education on the tool, the same way you'd teach about internet safety or how to detect fake news
(this goes, imo, for people trying to make AI safer and more ethical as well. if you consider it unethical by definition to work on AI, the only people working on it will be the ones who don't care about ethics.)

Trump and his advisers have said they want to institute mass layoffs in the federal workforce and will strip away remote work options so that people quit. But firing federal employees for working from home is easier said than done, since many federal union contracts allow for remote or hybrid work schedules. The incoming president lashed out at such arrangements and appeared to reference a new deal reached between the Social Security Administration and the union representing more than 40,000 employees. Social Security Commissioner Martin O’Malley, an appointee of President Joe Biden, recently agreed to a contract that extends telework scheduling into 2029, Bloomberg reported.

The strike at the world’s largest copper mine began at 8 a.m. local time on Tuesday and involves the union’s 2,400 members, leaders said in a emailed statement, though no formal announcement has been released yet.
Mining giant BHP started removing striking workers from its Escondida copper mine in Chile, deepening the conflict after Union No. 1 rejected the company's latest offer on pay negotiations. The strike, declared just hours before, threatens to undermine production at the world’s largest copper mine.
BHP’s latest statement revealed that the company has initiated a contingency plan that allows non-union members to continue minimum services, though the exact impact on operations remains unclear. The union accused BHP of breaking strike terms.
BHP, the world’s biggest mining company, is facing a costs squeeze on both sides of the Pacific from organized labor at its mines in Australia and Chile.
Demands for increased pay and easier working conditions have led to the threat of strike action at the giant Escondida copper mine in Chile while in Australia unions are being accused of a power grab in the company’s iron ore mines.
In both cases the threat of higher costs could hit the profits of BHP though not in the financial year which ended on June 30, scheduled for release on August 27.

It’s the outsized iron ore profit which has investors nervous as unions take advantage of recent changes to the law in Australia which could lead to the re-unionization of BHP’s iron ore workforce which has been largely union free for the past decade.
The new laws introduced by Australia’s union-friendly government permit a union to demand a collective pay deal despite having few members working at BHP mine sites, whereas the previous law required unions to demonstrate that they represented a majority of BHP workers on a site.
