obnoxious anon back, and I think I need to explain why starting early just rubs me the wrong way. It's disingenuous in the sense that your attack stats don't really reflect the amount of art output you did. It's like all those fake social media photos of you posing with a really expensive sports cars that isn't yours but you act like it is. Artfight is in July, and starting earlier than that makes it not Artfight anymore. If you just wanted to draw other's OCs, do it off-site mfs. TH, insta, Xtc

related post It's not about whether you like starting early or not. This is a very divided topic and considering it also concerns actual artfight rules, people like yourself are allowed not to like it. The Cowboys — Sultan of Squat (Feel It)

The Cowboys, on this sixth album, edge further and more precariously out onto their psychedelic rainbow bridge, pushing garage pop into increasingly ornate and baroque directions Of Room of Clons in 2020, I wrote, “Out with the Wire in and in with the XTC. The Cowboys lilt and tiptoe and swoon in fey, unmistakably British ways that evoke Syd Barrett, Television Personalities and the Cleaners from Venus,” and the trend continues here. The band may be from middle America (Bloomington, Indiana to be specific) and the title track may reference the All-American pastime, but there’s something very old-world decadent about these prancing, gesturing tracks.

Indeed, “The Sultan of Squat” barrels into view on roadhouse piano, an exuberant “bop-bop-bop” chorus incanting jittery, high-kicking energy into an already nervy anthem. The piano makes the cut sound like Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci, minus the pathos. The piano reappears, boogie-ing and woogie-ing in “Token Drifter”

As before, the singing is fantastically mannered, warbling and crooning through thickets of stinging guitar. “Red Headed Playa” is perhaps the disc’s heaviest cut, launched with crushing chords and riotous drums. Yet even this one dances off on staccato upbeats and rickety choruses. And “Raining Sour Grapes” may strike a Who-like pose with windmilling power chords and abrasive dissonance, but it quickly gallops off towards glam-rock territories, a latter day Mott the Hoople in the wings.

Not to say that this band wouldn’t be a barrel of fun live, or indeed, that this giddy full-length doesn’t have its appeal. It’s a playful joyride, a sped up carnival trip through florid emotions, and if it doesn’t feel real, especially, it doesn’t feel false either. It’s just that the colors are unnaturally bright.

A-T-2 264 Africanism Pt.1

I'm using the word Africanism wrong here, it's not like Orientalism where something from the Eastern world is mimicked. Africanism can be an aspect of African language or culture but it's also the belief that black Africans and their culture should predominate in Africa. The difference is Orientalism is usually a patronising depiction of the Middle East, Asia, and North African society made by a westerner. Africanism doesn't mean the same except in reference to Sub-Saharan Africa, although that's how I'm using it, that's why it's wrong. I'm glad that's cleared up

I've posted a lot of post punk and new wave songs that have incorporated African elements into the track, here are some more explicit examples

XTC's racist song It's Nearly Africa. With the distance of 40 years it's difficult to avoid how racist this song from the album English Settlement is. Here's XTC vocalist and songwriter Andy Partridge talking about it "The original song was called ‘It's Primitive Now.’ It was a little celebration of all things primitive, of how we should slow down and appreciate being basically animals, in the good sense of the word; how we should realize we're really very primitive and find the joy in that, rather than racing onwards through technology and losing our realness.” This is the idea Africa is forever in this primitive state and it's people more animalistic. Ironically when the Uffington White Horse depicted on the cover of English Settlement was created "Ancient Egypt" had been an advanced civilisation for millennia and was into it's Late Period XTC - It's Nearly Africa

Allez Allez - Valley Of The Kings

Belgian new wave band Allez Allez had their most enduring hit with the tribute to Grace Jones, African Queen (of course Grace Jones was born in Jamaica and moved to New York as a teenager, but y'know African diaspora.) You could argue the woman depicted on the cover is in a submissive rather than a regal pose. The mini album it was on, also called African Queen, was first released in 1981 but got a second release in 1982 and the track African Queen (Pour La Grace) was released as a single, so it's going here, it also works pitched up (faster.) It's been booted and reissued quite a bit over the years

Joker - African. The eponymous album by this Italian studio project features six-tracks each named after a different culture. This is African... it displays none of the normal tropes
