Xan Padrón’s Photography Lightbox exhibition “Time-Lapse” in now on view at 42 St-Bryant Park station. Combining street photography with a sensibility rooted in modern art, seven images document the small, collective gestures of daily life in the ecosystem of a city. To develop each artwork, Padrón took photographs of people passing in front of the same wall over a period of two hours. Through digital manipulation, the colorful vignettes create a portrait of a distinct day and place. Quotidien moments from Chinatown, the Hudson River Park, the Flatiron District, Tribeca, Midtown, Greenwich Village and the West Village, are represented in a film-strip-like arrangement, implying motion and narrative. A color field is derived from a repeating background, and repetition of form draws the eye to details that provide context to the images, such as the presence of masks during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic or speckles of water during a rainy day. While the exhibition focuses on Manhattan, the artist has used this approach to create photographs of cities worldwide, including London, Beijing, Sydney, Trinidad, Berlin, Paris, and Medellín.
The exhibition is generously sponsored by Duggal Visual Solutions and Kodak Professional.

Xan Padrón: Time Lapse
“My interest has always been “capturing” the soul of a place through the people that happens to be there, trying to“portrait” a city exclusively through its regular “random” people, without showing streets, buildings, etc. I consider my works a kind of documentation of a city or a specific neighborhood. I’m fascinated about how much life happens even at the most remote corner of a city. My itinerant life takes me around the world on a constant basis and I walk around cities, finding a spot to sit for a couple of hours and, unnoticed, photograph random people passing by against a wall. These quotidian gestures, combined, create a unique narrative of life by a wall in a place in the world. Time Lapse: 1 place, 1 moment. This project is not about the pictures I take but about the life that emanates from a moment of obsevation; a moment of pause”. It’s an ongoing project that includes cities in Spain, USA, Dominican Republic, China, Italy, Portugal, Cuba, France, UK, Australia, New Zealand…“ - Padrón
Xan Padrón’s fascination with time and movement, coupled with an uncanny ability to disappear behind the lens, unnoticed by his subjects, brought him to the realization of how much life happens even at the most seemingly insignificant location of a city.

[Time Lapse series:
Quotidian gestures, combined, create a unique narrative of life by a wall in a place in the world. Time Lapse: 1 place, 1 moment.
In 2011, photographer and musician Xan Padrón started Time Lapse. His fascination with time and movement, coupled with an uncanny ability to disappear behind the lens, unnoticed by his subjects, brought him to the realization of how much life happens even at the most seemingly insignificant location of a city. A willful arrest of movement, where action becomes observation, brought into focus a whole new vision of each unique ecosystem. From such chosen still points of time and space, life emanates. ] - Saatchi Art
I chose to include Largo do Ratos’ work as part of my research, because I feel like how he is statically observing the mundane. Spending hours documenting a wall that not even his subjects look at as they walk past. He documents and observers that parts of people’s lives they themselves don’t noice.

#Repost @picturagallery with @get_repost ・・・ Downtown Seattle, 2019 from the series Time Lapse, by Xan Padrón To continue featuring each artist in our current exhibition of CENTER Santa Fe award winners, today we look at Xan Padrón's series, Time Lapse, that's on view at the gallery until February 1st: "I consider my works a kind of documentation of a city or a specific neighborhood. This project is not about the pictures I take but about the life that emanates from a moment of observation; a moment of pause. For the “Time Lapse” project I sit on a single spot, unnoticed, for about 2 hours, photographing a sequence of people passing by against one unique background. These quotidian gestures, combined, create a unique narrative of life by a wall in a place in the world." (at Bloomington, Indiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/B7osim7Cjei/?igshid=1asnu68tchmzn
