This blog post is Part 2 of the blog post series on Building Real-Time TV Dashboards with Salesforce Data, Platform Events & a Raspberry Pi. Part 1 – The Intro Part 2 – Salesforce Setup Part 3 – Raspberry Pi Setup Let’s get started with the Raspberry Pi setup. The idea is to have the Dashboard running on the Pi. This can be done in various different ways but for the sake for this project we will be hosting and running the dashboard on the Raspberry Pi. We will be building the Dashboard using the LWC OSS (Lightning Web Components Open Source) Framework.  Pro Tip (Optional but totally worth trying out): Setup SSH and VNC on the Pi for super easy remote development and remote control. Step 0: Install the OS (Skip this step if you already have the OS installed) I am using Raspbian OS on my Pi and I set it up using NOOBS – New Out Of the Box Software and it makes the installation very easy. Here is a comprehensive step by step guid on installing the OS using NOOBS – https://www.raspberrypi.org/help/noobs-setup/2/ Step 1: Disable the Screensaver This is an important step because by default the PI’s screen keeps blanking out every 15 mins. As we will be having a standalone realtime dashboard running on the PI, we need to have our screensaver disabled. Easiest way to get this done is by installing xscreensaver. In the Terminal, run the following command to install it. This might take a few minutes $ sudo apt-get install xscreensaver Once installed, go to Preferences option in the main desktop menu. You should find the screen saver application. Launch it and search for the option to disable it completely. Step 2: Install Node.js Run the following commands in the Terminal Update your system package list sudo apt-get update Upgrade all your installed packages to their latest version sudo apt-get dist-upgrade Download the latest version of Node.js curl -sL https://deb.nodesource.com/setup_12.x | sudo -E bash - Install it sudo apt-get install -y nodejs To check if the installation was successful, run the following command and it should return the version number of Node.js node -v Step 3: Create LWC App The Dashboard Interface is an LWC App. So, the goal is to have an LWC App running on the Raspberry Pi and it is totally up to you on how and where you build the LWC app. As long as there is an LWC App to be run on the Pi, you can either develop it on the Pi or develop it somewhere else(like your local machine) and migrate it to the Pi. For example, I developed it on my local machine and pushed it to the Pi via version control(bitbucket) so that I could maintain a backup and also sync code changes between my system and the pi. Feel free choose which ever way you are comfortable with and make sure you have Node.js installed as it is required to develop and run LWC Apps. 3.1 Create tv-dashboard LWC App On the command line/terminal, run command: npx create-lwc-app tv-dashboard When prompted about the application details, fill in the details as following Package name for npm: Press Enter to accept the default Description: Type the app description or press Enter to accept the default Author: Type your name or press Enter to accept the default Version: Press Enter to accept the default License: Press Enter to accept the default Who is the GitHub owner of the repository ( https://github.com/OWNER/repo): Type in your GitHub owner name or leave it blank and press Enter What is the GitHub name of the repository ( https://github.com/owner/REPO): Type in your GitHub repo name or Press Enter to accept the default Select a package manager: Use your arrow keys to select npm press Enter Use TypeScript or JavaScript: Use your arrow keys to select JavaScript press Enter Use custom Express server configuration: Enter y to install the server and press Enter Once the application is created, you will see the following message:   Created conference-app in /YOUR/FILE/STRUCTURE/tv-dashboard. Checkout the `scripts` section of your `package.json` to get started. 3.2 Install A Few Packages Open command line/terminal Navigate to the directory containing the tv-dashboard application cd tv-dashboard Run the following command: npm install jsforce dotenv socket.io chart.js @salesforce-ux/design-system But, what are these applications and why do we need them? jsforce – JavaScript library to interact with Salesforce Orgs and APIs dotenv – To store our Salesforce credentials as environment variables in a .env file and reference them in or app socket.io – JavaScript library that enables real-time bidirectional event-based communication. We are using this to communicate our platform events from the LWC Server to LWC Frontend(charts). Works in a pub-sub model. chart.js – JavaScript library to create simple and beautiful HTML5 charts using canvas elements @salesforce-ux/design-system – Salesforce Lightning Design System (SLDS) – CSS framework to make our app beautiful 3.3 Create the .env file and declare our salesforce credentials as environment variables Open the tv-dashboard application folder Create a file with .env (with a leading period) as file name. Make sure that you are creating this folder in the root folder i.e., tv-dashboard Add the following the content into the .env file .env SF_LOGIN_URL=https://login.salesforce.com SF_USERNAME=YOUR_USERNAME SF_PASSWORD=YOUR_PASSWORD SF_TOKEN=YOUR_SECURITY_TOKEN Make sure to update the above placeholder values with your data SF_USERNAME: Your Salesforce Org’s username. SF_PASSWORD: Your Salesforce Org’s password. The “Magic Mirror” craze got pretty big in the hacker community a few years ago. For those who may not be familiar with them, a Magic Mirror is setup using a small display behind a 2 way mirror to add text and information to your bathroom (or wherever) mirror. It’s pretty cool, and can be done at very low cost and with only a little bit of tech know-how.

My display isn’t actually ‘mirrored’, but many people build things like this one.
I’ve always loved having ‘displays’ around my workspace – showing information that doesn’t need to sit on my ‘work’ monitors, but is handy to be able to glance at.  Being able to quickly glance oer and see  dashboards showing system status, or even something showing date, time, and the weather outside.
A few months ago I decided to take one of my spare monitors at home mounted on the wall over my desk and turn it into a permanent display. It would show my current calendar, weather, stock prices, stuff like that. I got to work.
The Hardware
This part is probably the easiest. I used a spare 24″ LCD monitor I had originally mounted to be a sort of TV display. It wasn’t showing anything yet, so I just co-opted it for the Mirror display. It had an HDMI port on it, so it was perfect.
The second component is a Raspberry Pi3 I had lying around from some  other project. This particularly Pi is pretty old, so using it just drive a mostly static display seemed great. This one has a case and power supply. I was able to just stick it to the back of the monitor, coil up a HDMI cable next to it, and I was all set.

A small note here. A second display I built for our Makerspace actually uses the monitor itself to power the Pi, since the monitor had a USB port on it. A USB -> MicroUSB cable meant as soon as the monitor was powered up, the Pi would boot and start displaying information. Pretty handy.
When building up these systems, I highly recommend having a keyboard and mouse to plug into the Pi. You can use an ‘all in one’ wireless keyboard/mouse from Amazon – these are great because you don’t have to deal with the cables (particularly when the monitor is mounted on a wall), and you can just unplug the USB adapter and use the keyboard on another project at any time.
The Software
The needed packages are pretty straightforward:
Raspbian – the default Linux installation for the Raspberry Pi. Get this installed and up to date (Run the package manager updater after the install to make sure you have the latest and greatest of everything)
Using a command line or the package manager, make sure you have the following secondary tools installed (these are not installed by default):
Chromium (apt-get install chromium-browser)
npm
xdtotool
Magic Mirror 2 – This is the core software that will run your display. Follow the directions on installation carefully. Clone the repository and get it ready for use. I use the manual installation procedure , it works best for how I build systems. YMMV.
Configuring the Host
At this point, I’m assuming the manual configuration of the software above has gone correctly, and you’re able to either use the Raspbian browser or Chromium to connect to http://localhost:8080/ on the Pi and view something approaching the display you want.
Now, this is where I’ve seen a lot of tutorials and other reference material fall down. How do you go from a desktop showing your display to something that will survive reboots, auto-configures itself, etc. Well, here’s what I did to make my display boards stable and rebootable without user intervention.
Some of these things are convenience items, some are mandatory.
For the love of all that is holy, set your password. The default ‘pi’ password is well known, please reset it. This device will be running unattended for days/weeks/months. Please change the password.
Rename the host – this is super handy so you can ssh to it easily. Edit the /etc/hostname file and give it a nice name (mine is ‘mirror’). Once you do this, from your local network, you’ll be able to ssh into the pi via ‘ssh [email protected]’ – neat trick, huh?
Create an autostartup script for the Pi that starts the browser in full screen mode just after the desktop loads. Best way to do this is to edit /etc/xdg/lxsession/LXDE-pi/autostart and put the following code in that file:
@xset s noblank @xset s off @xset -dpms @lxpanel --profile LXDE-pi @pcmanfm --desktop --profile LXDE-pi @xscreensaver -no-splash @chromium-browser --app=http://localhost:8080 --start-fullscreen
Create a cron job entry that will cause the magic mirror server software to restart on reboot. Easiest way to do this is use the ‘crontab -e’ command to make a new entry. Add the following line to the bottom of file (note, this assumes that the Magic Mirror software is installed in /home/pi/MagicMirror – adjust if that’s not the case)
@reboot cd /home/pi/MagicMirror;node serveronly > /home/pi/nodeserver.log 2>&1
On reboot, your mirror software should come up cleanly. Here’s a small trick though that makes remote maintenance easy. If you make a change to the config of the server – add a new module, change sources, etc, and you’re like me and have long since detached the keyboard and house from the unit, this little command will force the Chromium browser to do a reload, bringing in the changes you make to your config file. No need to reboot!
DISPLAY=:0 xdotool key F5
Conclusions / Sum-up
I’ve been running my display at home, and the second display up at the lab for a few months now. I’ll write some more on a few of the modules I’ve used (hooking up to my home automation stuff has been interesting), but that’ll be in a future article. I love having the date, time, calendar, stock prices, and weather always visible. The news ticker at the bottom has been sort of ‘cute’, but I really don’t watch it that much.

There are literally hundreds of third party modules available for the mirror software. You can configure the layout of the screen to do just about anything – from showing phases of the moon to displaying the next time a bus will stop in front of your office. Enjoy!

Speech Recognition
Speech recognition allows the user to intuitively interact with Rika through verbal commands. We can also use text based communication, but that will come at a later time. For this, we will be using a microphone and CMU’s Pocketsphinx.
Enabling and testing microphone
I am using a logitech webcam which has a built-in microphone, but this method should work with any USB microphone as I believe it is hardware agnostic (compared to other methods) - see here. Setting your microphone as ‘default’ is necessary for my code to work out-of-the-box.
ALSA also has power management enabled; to disable it, invoke:
sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
And add these two lines:
power_save=0
power_save_controller=N
Installing ALSA developer library
ALSA is the sound driver used for the Raspberry Pi. To interface with it in C/C++, we need to obtain the developer package. On the terminal, invoke:
sudo apt-get install libasound2-dev
To link this library with Code::Blocks, go to ‘Compiler Settings -> Linker Settings -> Other Linker Options’ and type “-lasound” on a new line. You may have done this for the SDL2 and SDL2_mixer libraries.
Testing ALSA developer library
In “/test_files/test_alsa_capture”, there is a test program that captures audio from your microphone for 5 seconds. The program captures in 16000Hz, mono-channel and signed 16 bit little-endian to conform to Pocketsphinx’s requirements. Run it, say random words and you can play the sound file produced by going to that directory in the terminal and invoking:
sudo aplay -r 16000 -c 1 -f S16_LE test.wav
Installing Pocketsphinx
Pocketsphinx is the smaller version of CMU’s sphinx4, designed for embedded applications. First, ensure that you do not have other sound drivers installed on your Raspberry Pi (JACK or PulseAudio), as we want Pocketsphinx to immediately work with ALSA - see here (’purge’ command). To install, follow the tutorial here, but ignore the steps done for setting up your microphone (the ‘options’ steps). As of writing, the latest release for both Pocketsphinx and Sphinxbase is ‘5prealpha’. To link both of them in Code::Blocks;
First, you need to go to ‘Settings -> Compiler -> Linker Settings -> Other Linker Options’ and type in a new line (but all in the same line) “-lpocketsphinx -lsphinxbase -lsphinxad”.
Next, you need to go to ‘Search Directories -> Compiler’ and add the directories “/usr/local/include/pocketsphinx” and “/usr/local/include/sphinxbase”. This is important, because since we downloaded the installers through their website rather than “apt-get”, their files are installed in a different directory (non-default). Below are two pictures showing the completed steps (apologies for quality):

Testing Pocketsphinx
Another test program is provided in “/test_files/test_pocketsphinx”, which takes an audio file and decodes it. Please read the README, as there is an additional step needed for it to work. You can use your previously made audio file from “/test_alsa_capture” for this.
rika_voice library addition - speech_recognition_wrapper
This wrapper internally uses both ALSA capture and Pocketsphinx to decode speech from the microphone. Again, a README is provided to give you additional details.
Extras
The Raspberry Pi has a screen blanking mode to reduce power consumption - this might cause some USB hardware to stop working. For safety, follow the steps outlined here to remove that feature. Additionally, you can install xscreensaver using:
sudo apt-get install xscreensaver
Access the GUI via ‘Start Menu -> Settings/Preferences -> Screensaver’ and disable screensaver using the dropdown menu at the top left of the GUI. Hopefully this enables Rika to keep running without any malfunctions.
Ending notes
Now that we have an input method and audio response method for rika_voice, we can tie them together in the main function with functions in rika_action; this could be GPIO stuff, scripts, whatever you’d like Rika to do.
Once I’ve cleaned up the code, I will release the current build as version 1.0, as this is a minimal program for others to familiarise with Rika first.
