The following should be sung to the tune of "Be Prepared" from the Lion King. The scene: the safehouse in Luthadel as Kelsier unveils the big plan for the first time. "Why are you giving Kelsier a villain song?" you ask. Well, let's not read too much into it...
[Previous song parodies: Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better, Radiant, Somebody That I Used To Know, Total Eclipse of the Heart, Surface Pressure, Can't Wait to Kill the King]
Kelsier:
You all think the Lord Ruler's immortal
That his empire can never fall
But I know of a power primordial
A new metal that might save us all
I know you have low expectations
And think this can never be done
But try having high aspirations!
I think our crew's second to none.
It's clear from your doubtful expressions
You think that I'm just putting on airs
But we're good at heists and deceptions
Even HE can be caught unawares
So prepare for the chance of a lifetime
Be prepared for the world's greatest plot
A shining new era
Is tiptoeing nearer
Vin:
And where do I feature?
Kelsier:
Just listen to me, here!
I know it sounds crazy
And the plan's still quite hazy
But we must strike while the iron is hot!
An injustice that's finally repaired
Be prepared!
Yeden:
Yeah, be prepared! We'll be prepared all right.
...For what?
Kelsier:
For the death of the Lord Ruler!
Breeze (sarcastically):
Why, is he sick?
Kelsier:
No, friend. We're gonna kill him.
Overthrow his government too.
Clubs (sarcastically):
Great idea--kill an immortal god.
We can't! Do that! La-la-la-la-la-la
Kelsier:
Listen up--I have a plan
Vin:
But you said--
Kelsier:
We'll make a plan!
Stick with me and the skaa will never be oppressed again!
I've been catching up on the main story in Book 3 and Hansa is kind of just chilling, but if she dies they wouldn't have to worry about Jaania cuz I would blow up Lore MYSELF.
My silly thoughts since I just got to Outpost Yeden:
Alexander is so silly. I've been playing so many old quests, and it's so interesting how different he is now.
I could've fixed Jaania
I HATEEEEEE the mushroom people. GOSH, I WAS IN HELL I HATE THEM SO MUCH I THOUGHT IT WASN'T GOING TO END.
I love how in these quests you can read chatter between the characters with you! Love seeing the banter.
What if they just stabbed Akanthus? That's not magical??🤷🏾♀️
JAANIA WAIT DON'T USE THAT SOUL--
JAANIA...HONEY...
Love my dragon's relationship with the hero. They're a little guy. My baby baby.
I'd die for the Golden Hand duo we're LOCKED in! (I hope)
OMG! This failed even worse than I thought! Nearly three quarters of their army wiped out, for nothing.
And there's no denying that Kelsier is largely to blame, bolstering his men's, and especially Yeden's, confidence not just a little too much. And for the not-so-brilliant idea of having Yeden replace Ham, in charge at the caves, in the first place.
Speaking of Ham, he's not in an enviable position, but at least it seems he doesn't have to choose between fighting the men he has trained and fighting the men he has trained with, at least not now. But just how angry is he going to be with Kell when he finds out what happened?
Mennis isn't a bad man, but calling a failure and senseless loss of life like this a "victory" is… bleak, to say the least.
How do they go on from here?
After another tiny glimpse of Sazed's Feruchemy, I'm now trying to imagine how you save up speed. :D
With the warnings against burning and flaring pewter for too long, I admit I didn't think it was possible to do what Kell and Vin just did.
Another thing: how much sharper are Vin's Tineye abilities than Kelsier's? And why?
"Hey Kell, aren't these claustrophobic caves beautiful?"
"Yeah no they really aren't, in fact, they suck and I hate it down here. Tell me what your thinking about before I eat myself alive."
"Oh ok, well, isn't it funny that the Skaa are inferior to nobleman?"
"That's worse, thanks Ham."
Odd how no one seems to notice that Kelsier gets progressively more and more quiet as his time in the caves continues; no one seems to put together "Oh. yeah! These are like the Pits!" I mean he does say he's put them behind him to Yeden, but you can't just put a traumatic experience like that behind you. You can face it; and Kelsier does wonderfully, but he had to be reliving that trauma for that entire chapter.
Poor baby.
VorpalAuroch: It's a good call in the abstract but the choice of character to genderswap is not great. Docks, sure, but I'd rather have Ham stay male (and, superficially, stereotypical), and swap any/all of Clubs, Marsh, and Yeden instead.
Brandon Sanderson: I understand this complaint, though you might want to look at the post I made just before this one in another thread.
Nothing is set in stone, but we need to imagine the Mistborn film as an alternate version of the cosmere, hopefully as close in heart as the MCU to the comics--but distant in some specific choices. In this case, Ham is working really well changed. Remember, you're only going to have a few comments from him/her in the film. The real place to get to know the character will be in the television show that goes between movies one and three (assuming this plan actually plays out--which it might not.)
taviow: If a TV show is successful, then it gets renewed. If Books 1 & 3 are already planned to be movies, what do you do with the TV series when, hopefully the show being a big hit, the network renews it for further seasons? Is there additional plot to be explored between books 2 and 3 somehow? Or did I misunderstand what you were talking about entirely?
Brandon Sanderson: So, there is a lot of buzz in Hollywood right now about integrated television and film properties. Further seasons, if this all works, would be Secret History blending into the time between Eras one and Two.
‘So that's why,’ Vin thought. ‘The rebellion's momentum isn't gathering—Kelsier's is.’ The men spoke of him in quiet, almost reverent, tones. For some reason, that made Vin uncomfortable.
… Vin frowned. Kelsier was a good man; he'd probably make a good ruler. However, if he did try to take control, it would smell of betrayal—a reneging on the promises that he had made to Yeden.
I’m sensing…. something worrying for my son’s future. Should I be worried?….
No, nono stop, don’t answer that! Everything will be fine, everyone will live, sunshine and rainbows and free metal shots for everyone!! No worries!! …At all!!
Concerns about what Project Casca actually entails aside, I think I find this bit just a teeny bit more worrying. While I think this could prove to be a positive angle of the Shapeless of being closer in proximity to the Land of Dragons that could help them interact with new ideas and peoples more directly I fear the Magesters that are left and in chagre at the moment could be more preoccupied with expanding their “faith” and influence into new lands for further control.
It’s been noted before that a great deal of the Magesters and their culture in general view the Land of Dragons as primarily savage and primitive, at least when compared to their own technological prowess and that kind of thinking rarely goes down well for anyone. Furthermore, if this project of theirs truly can help them reclaim the seat of their empire they’ll be just as powerful and just as dangerous as they were before Roirr slapped them into disarray. Now of course they still don’t have their fragment of the mana core anymore, unless Casca is meant to replace it which will be its own can of worms, so I doubt they’ll be pulling any Rift shenanigans for the foreseeable future, especially after what just happened, but I’m sure they have other means of waging war when the rifts are not suitable, can’t imagine that’s been their only means to wage conflict against Volkenraand in the past either.
That isn’t to say the Shapeless will indeed seek to invade or spread their false religion in the near future if they are able to get back to full strength or establish Yeden as a permanent colony even if the project doesn’t exactly work out but it the fact they desire to remain at all that is raising the alarm bell in the back of my head at the moment. I guess as they are now there is no reason still to give up the whole lets prop up the fake god for our benefit and use people as walking mana batteries so soon at this point especially given they’ve been doing it for so long.
It’s too soon to be completely worried that they’re choosing to stick around, presumably openly, for the foreseeable future and as I mentioned them staying could prove beneficial for them as they have the chance to be exposed to new paths beyond their more negative horizons and Alteon pointed out they have some benefits they could share with us on their technology and ideas concerning magic but those potential negatives man if they just go back to business as usual oh boy.
“Ah,” Breeze said, exchanging a glance with Ham. “One of those. Well, then.”
“What?” Yeden asked. “What does he mean?”
“You don’t want to know,” Breeze said.
“I don’t?”
Breeze shook his head. “You know how unsettled you just were when Kelsier said he’d replaced Lord Renoux with an impostor? Well, this is about a dozen times worse. Trust me— the less you know, the more comfortable you’ll be.”
Well, the end of part three has brought to mind an old meme. One of a ludicrously complex battle plan completely destroyed by a mad lad rushing straight in.
As far as I know the skaa don’t have last names, but if they did I strongly suspect that Yeden’s would be Jenkins.
