Euro 2021: The Spain squad Luis Enrique would've named for the March friendlies

Luis Enrique was meant to announce his 1st Spain squad since retaking the job on Friday, March 20 but, instead, there will be no global football for the time being. Euro 2021 fans can book Spain Vs Sweden Tickets on our website on exclusively discounted prices.

La Roja was down to play matches against Germany and the Netherlands during March in preparation for Euro 2021. However, with coronavirus suspending football across the continent, UEFA has announced the Euro 2021 for next year. This is the squad Luis Enrique would've named on Friday.

Goalkeepers

David de Gea, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Pau Lopez. The plan was to keep Kepa in the squad in March, despite him falling out of favour at Chelsea, although Luis Enrique was also considering the likes of Unai Simon, Fernando Pacheco and Sergio Asenjo.

Right-back

Jesus Navas and Dani Carvajal were staples in the squad in this position for Luis Enrique. The names of Cesar Azpilicueta, Jonny Otto and Sergi Roberto had also been mentioned, but they were a long way back.

Centre-back

With Sergio Ramos and Inigo Martinez guaranteed spots on the list, Luis Enrique was edging towards more Athletic Club representatives in this position. Unai Nunez and Yeray Alvarez were in the in a row, while other players involved Pau Torres, Raul Albiol, Diego Llorente and Mario Hermoso.

Left-back

There were plenty of options for Luis Enrique in this role, with Jordi Alba and Jose Gaya leading the race for a place in the squad. Elsewhere, there is Juan Bernat, Angelino and Yuri Berchiche who were in the running.

Holding midfield

Central midfielders

There have been plenty of changes in the central midfield positions during Luis Enrique and Robert Moreno's spells in charge. Saul Niguez didn't have much chance of being selected, but Thiago Alcantara did due to his recent performances for Bayern Munich.

Moreno had forgotten about Dani Parejo, but Luis Enrique is a big fan of the Valencia captain and Sergi Roberto, too. In the more attacking positions, Fabian Ruiz was a certainty in the squad. That left scope for Dani Ceballos, Sergio Canales, Santi Cazorla, Suso, Pablo Sarabia and Iker Muniain to create custody.

Wingers

Spain favouring a 4-3-3 creation, Isco's return to form had been good news for Luis Enrique, who was set to select the Real Madrid man. Mikel Oyarzabal's usefulness would've probably seen him included, while Ferran Torres and Dani Olmo were also in with a shout.

Strikers

Based off worldwide form, Paco Alcacer was the obvious choice for Luis Enrique, while Rodrigo Moreno is also a fixed in the team. Then you have the unreliable Alvaro Morata, the tried-and-tested Gerard Moreno and the electric Inaki Williams, who hasn't played for Spain since 2016.

El Athletic Club, tras el mal momento de juego y de resultados por el que pasó antes del parón liguero, espera reaccionar este domingo en San Mamés ante un Villarreal en puestos de Liga Europa y que mira hacia la zona de Liga de Campeones.

Será un choque en San Mamés entre dos equipos europeos en dinámicas opuestas. La rojiblanca, muy mala, de solo 4 puntos sumados de 24 posibles; y la amarilla, excelente, con 13 de 15.

Por ello, el Athletic llega conjurado al encuentro tras rumiar durante dos semanas una delicada situación que ha puesto en cuestión el nuevo proyecto con José Ángel ‘Cuco’ Ziganda en el banquillo. Y que se ha agravado con lo alargadas que están resultando las negociaciones para renovar al portero Kepa Arrizabalaga.

La no continuación del prometedor meta, presuntamente en la agenda del Real Madrid, sería una carga de profundidad que podría dinamitar la singular filosofía del club vasco de jugar con los suyos, al tratarse Kepa de un jugador vizcaíno, sentimentalmente ‘athletizale’ y, lo más relevante, criado desde la infancia en Lezama, donde llegó con solo 9 años.

Con todo el ruido alrededor que está generando ese asunto, Kepa será mañana, como lo está siendo durante todo el campeonato liguero, el meta titular en un once con las importantes bajas de Yeray Álvarez, Iker Muniain y Beñat Etxebarria, todos ellos lesionados de larga duración. Y también de Mikel Vesga, en su caso por sanción.

Es duda todavía Oscar de Marcos, que podría entrar en la convocatoria ante la mejoría experimentada en las últimas semanas del grave esguince de tobillo que sufrió el 20 de agosto, en la primera jornada de Liga.

Aunque quizás sea un poco pronto para el regreso de De Marcos, cuya ausencia dejaría en 20 los disponibles para un Ziganda que más que probablemente eche mano mañana del equipo titular. Con Lekue, Unai Núñez, Laporte y Balenziaga por delante de Kepa; Iturraspe y San José en el doble pivote; y Williams y Córdoba por las bandas para abastecer a los goleadores Aduriz y Raúl García.

Si acaso podrían entrar Bóveda en el lateral derecho, Mikel Rico en medio campo y/o Susaeta en ataque. Pero no se espera.

El Villarreal llega a este partido en el nuevo San Mamés con la motivación y las ganas de mantener la buena línea de resultados y juego, que han logrado desde la llegada del técnico Javier Calleja.

Los castellonenses suman cinco partidos sin perder, con cuatro victorias y un empate, una racha que les ha acercado a la parte alta de la tabla clasificatoria, a pesar del mal inicio de campaña, si bien no se han enfrentado a los equipos de la zona alta de la tabla, o a rivales de entidad a excepción del Atlético de madrid en el Wanda metropolitano que acabó con empate.

A pesar de la actual situación del Athletic el partido de este domingo se presenta como una buena reválida para el buen momento del equipo castellonense ya que nunca ha sido capaz de ganar en este escenario.

Para este encuentro, el técnico Javier Calleja contará con muchas bajas y algunas de ellas de importancia, lo que sigue lastrando al equipo, como son los casos de Sergio Asenjo, Bruno Soriano, Andrés Fernández, Samu Castillejo, Ruben Semedo y Álvaro González, que no estarán en el encuentro.

De entre todas las bajas, destaca la ausencia de Álvaro González, que sumada a la de Semedo, deja al equipo con solo dos defensas centrales.

Además de la duda de Roberto Soriano o Denis Cheryshev en la línea del centro del campo, en ataque Calleja podría alinear al italiano Nicola Sansone y al congoleño Cedrik Bakambu, lo que permitiría dar descanso al colombiano Carlos Bacca, que estuvo con su selección.

Para completar la lista de convocados, Calleja ha citado a cuatro jugadores del filial, el portero Ander Cantero, el defensa Pau Francisco y los centrocampistas Ramiro Guerra y Daniel Rabaseda.
