News - Guinness World Records has officially recognized Hana Yori Dango (aka Boys Over Flowers) the World’s Most Published Shoujo Manga title written by a single author! The series has printed a staggering amount world-wide, exceeding 59.4 million print copies--and that doesn’t even count digital ebooks! 

Yoko Kamio shared the following message in response:

I am very happy to have made it into the Guinness World Records in this milestone year of the 30th anniversary since the the launch of Boys Over Flowers. I believe this record is made possible by the support of so many readers. Thank you very much. And my first original art exhibition will be held from April. Please come and meet Tsukushi and F4!

BOYS OVER FLOWERS (2009, SOUTH KOREAN ADAPTATION)

In all versions our female lead Jan Di (Makino Tsukushi/Dong Shancai) falls head over heels for second male lead Yoon Ji Hoo (Hanazawa Rui/Hauze Lei)

Their story of love has no chance for a few reasons. Ji Hoo (KIM HYUN JOONG) is viewed as autistic with very little interest in the affairs of others. Though he walks with F4 seemingly proudly he is not on board with their practices (ie bullying) but he doesn't care to stop it or help anyone until Jan Di (GU HYE SEON)

Also he is hung up on his first love yet she doesn't see him that way. So after the first love leaves and he follows her later to return heartbroken. And much more interested in Jan Di.

By this time Jan Di has fallen for Gu Jun Pyo (Domyouji Tsukuba/Daoming Si) and though completely enamored by Ji Hoo initially she can't quite see him the same anymore. Though he is less toxic and a lot more caring without a overbearing mother to disapprove all the way.

However Ji Hoo never stops looking out for Jan Di. Even as Jun Pyo is promised to another woman in matrimony. A woman who like F4 seems drawn to our female lead Jan Di (Makino Tsukushi/Dong Shancai)

Hana Yori Dango 🍡 This shoujo manga is one of the best shoujo manga of all time! Though I've seen some western bloggers write off it as rubbish just based of the first 1-3 chapters and don't bother to go and read a slow burn, well written and realistically shown character growth. Seriously, if one is a fan of a bad boy changing magically into a good husband material after a few smooches with the naive, beautiful heroine then I've to say that person is a fan of bad/lazy writting. But if you are not then you'll enjoy Hana Yori Dango manga. P.S the bullying/ragging scenes in high school showed are very brutal but it's actually a reality even now in many Asian countries, including Japan, Korea, to Bangladesh, India etc. This also results in victims deaths every year too. And when the manga was running, many Japanese students who got bullied wrote to the managaka, Miss Yoko Kamio that they got strength and inspiration to fight back against their own troubles. So I don't see why western bloggers spew so much 💩 against the mangaka unnecessarily.

Damian

Damian's character is inspired by the manga "Hana Yori Dango" (also known as "Boys Over Flowers") by Yoko Kamio, specifically Tsukasa Domyouji.

He was originally a nasty guy who bragged about his status, but soon became a nice guy.

Endo originally wanted him to be a nastier character.

Lin says that Damian and his lackeys are true friends and that Damian's whole story to come should be done with care

I don't know if many know this, but it's known that Tatsuya Endo is a fan of the shoujo genre. And the fact that he based it on a Yoko Kamio's character excites me *doki doki*

Tsukasa and Damian already have a lot in common for example:

They are both haughty.

They both brag about their social status

They like to make fun of others

They have a personality uhm…. complicated?

They are never with their family ( one of the main reasons why they are both like that )

And the most important of all… ¡They are in love with unique girls, they received the fist of love!

But here's something that catches my attention, Tatsuya Endo said that the coming story for Damian should be done very carefully. That means that Damian's character is really going to influence the story a lot. And guess who else he will influence? That's Anya. I don't want to rush to say too much but the way things are going in the manga Damian and Anya's relationship is really moving forward. Damian is willing to protect Anya from danger. And that has been shown many times in the manga. Even though he often says that Anya is very annoying and more unpleasant things, he really appreciates her a lot and cares about her. And I don't know if you have seen the anime/manga of Hana Yori Dango, well, the real villain of the anime is Tsukasa's mother, once Makino and him start a relationship, doumyouji's mother does everything to separate them. I don't know if Endo has something similar in mind for Damian and Anya's story but it's going to be interesting.

Finally, I don't want to get ahead of myself but I'm 90% sure that Damian and Anya will be together in the end and I'll tell you why? Because they complement each other too much and for example Damian is very serious and mature for a boy of his age, Anya is very immature and is not serious at all (but well she is only 4 years old) But what I mean is that Damian has that seriousness that she lacks, and Anya has that joy and spontaneity that he lacks. Anya has influenced Damian a lot and in a way changed him, the same thing happened with Tsukasa, he met Makino a girl totally different from the ones he knew and she changed him. Damian appreciates Anya a lot but she appreciates Damian? At first she thought he was an annoying brat and to some extent she still thinks the same, but Makino also had that thought of Doumyouji but as she got to know him those thoughts changed and in the end she ended up falling in love with Doumyouji. Probably something like this will happen with Damian and Anya, she will get to know Damian and little by little she will start to love him the same way he does. But for this I think there has to be a time skip. So we can only wait for the evolution of one of the most popular spy x fmily couples. ♡
