Samurai Marathon (2019)

In 1855, after over 200 years of isolation, the Black Ships of Commodore Perry appeared off the coast of Japan, waking the nation from its long slumber. 

Lord Itakura Katsuakira (Hiroki Hasegawa) of the Itakura Clan is deeply disturbed by their arrival, doubting their true intentions and fearing an imminent invasion, causing panic and uncertainty akin to that of the arrival of the massive Mongol fleet centuries ago, who were militarily stronger as well.

He fears that the Samurai are no longer as strong as they once were after enjoying 200 years of peace, as most Samurai of this era have been doing administrative work such as clerks and accountants for the Shogunate. And so decided to train his warriors physically and mentally through a marathon.

Karasawa Jinna (Takeru Satoh) is a Samurai accountant for the Itakura Clan, with his own family, a wife and a son. However, he is actually a Ninja, working for the Tokugawa Shoguante, without the knowledge of his family, as he is supposed to report any suspicious activities of Lord Itakura to the Shogunate.

When Lord Itakura summoned all his Samurai by a rumbling war drum, there is speculation that he is going against the Shogunate to reject the treaty with the Americans. Karasawa dispatched a coded message to Edo. But when he realizes that the Lord is only organizing a marathon, it was too late.

Meanwhile, Yukihime Katsuakira (Nana Komatsu), the Lord’s daughter whose desire is to see the black ships off the coast of Edo is denied by her father who fears for her life and ordered her to stay and marry a Samurai of his choosing, who will look after her and the Clan when he is gone one day.

Upset and agitated, Yuki escaped the palace and disguised herself as a man. In figuring out what to do with her life, she ended joining the men in the marathon, where she met several characters like Uesugi Hironoshin (Shōta Sometani), a boy and an elderly man.

Uesugi is a good runner who has no problem in winning the marathon but is warned to let the a high ranking Samurai to win instead and not a peasant like him. The boy simply wants to make his late father, who was a Samurai, proud and joins the race with the elderly man who was a good friend of his late father.

However, what started as a run of fitness turned into a run for their lives, as every turn of the punishing route seems to reveal further treachery and plotting from traitors and spies within the Itakura Clan, with a band of assassins waiting at some point, hoping to strike them at their most weakest state.
