Zutomayo: Mystery of Cool

Foreign Music has always been a strange thing both for the world and for myself personally. While everyone can appreciate a good Taylor Swift or some English indie. The world has a strange obsession with exotic musicians of a different language.

In retrospect, the K-pop boom: Super Junior, Girls Generation and Blackpink showed that music, doesn't matter in terms of the language. (not really)

It values the cool factor and the massive influence it causes to the internet. Just look at how [K-Pop artist; PSY] managed to unite the world. For me. My "Blackpink" is this faceless group?

Translation: [Everything is fine with me]

Debuted in 2018, Zutomayo (full name: Zutto Mayonaka De Iinoni) is a Japanese rock group. Translates as: I wish it was midnight all the time.

On June 4, 2018. Zutomayo released their first song on YouTube, [Byōshin o Kamu/ 秒針を噛む] becoming an immediate hit. Having 200,000 views within the first week. Assisted with an animated music video with a cast of peculiar characters.

Over the last seven years, the group has progressed from using just traditional instruments to adding non-traditional instruments.

Based on their live concerts. The group is seen using something called; [Electronicos Fantasticos/ Nicos] which is a collection of used electronic equipment turned into a pseudo instrument.

ZTMY's group members is uncertain since a lot of their talents alternate song by song. Their only consistent member is vocalist and songwriter; ACA-Ne/ ACAね an unidentified singer whose range is described as; energetic, expressive, and delicate.

If we were to describe Zutomayo's type of music. It would be difficult to narrow down as to what ZTMY's genre fall under. The general belief is that they are rock based but is riddled with techno on the side.

Whatever the case, the group's music has its own unique identity. Upon listening to their songs (for multiple times) the group prioritizes on the bass guitar, the chaotic slams of the keyboard and the Nicos. Lyric wise, its rather difficult to paint a discernable picture since its of a different language. According to some Japanese listeners, ZTMY's songs to have a lot of wordplay and double meaning in its phrasing.

In the song, [お勉強しといてよ/ STUDY ME] the song spews a jumble of nonsense. However, the music video tells a unique story. STUDY ME follows a girl who is stuck in a perpetual cycle where she is somewhat complacent with her being a background character. Until she realizes that she can make a difference in defiance of her program.

Another song, [勘ぐれい/ Hunch Gray] its lyrics share the sentiment of chasing one's dreams but is uncertain about the venture. Trapped in a distorting world where the answers are unclear.

Still, the author wants to continue. Confronting problems one at a time. The video however, is about two childhood friends who got separated by dark entities of authority and is in the midst of a rescue mission.

- 3,2,1...Mirror Tune! -

Its worth mentioning the iconography found in ZTMY's music videos. For the most part, the main characters are mostly human. Nira-chan is the girl seen in both [STUDY ME] and in another song; [暗く黒く/Darken] although she is more cyborg than human in the latter.

The videos are animated by several independent artists such as; [tvchany] for their stylish and sharp style on [ミラーチューン/Mirror Tune] and [残機/Time Left] Another artist, [sakiyama] uses a rather messy and incredibly expressive style seen in [勘冴えて悔しいわ/ Kansaete Kuyashiiwa] which played this meta joke of its main character attempting to save the characters from the other videos.

I could honestly go on about the various art styles found in Zutomayo's MVs. There is also an official [Card Game] for them all. On the topic of consistency, The one creature seen in all of its videos is the adorable Hedgehog; Uniguri-kun.

With that said, Zutomayo is a mysterious group of talents shrouded in shadow. Both the musicians to ACA-Ne herself. It adds excitement to the identity of the alluring talent but it also enhances the variety of genres found in their music. Allowing its audience to explore and experience a type of music they rarely listen to.

ZTMY takes away the popularity because, unlike other bands. They don't exactly have a "face" to refer to. Rather, they let their songs and the MVs speak to the fans both in Japan and overseas.

Zutomayo is not just music but also an exploration of style. As seen with their clothing line. It's an inbred of Easter eggs with its upbeat songs filled with messages of melancholy. That is what makes ZTMY mysteriously cool~

Studio Colorido's Drifting Home Anime Film Reveals New Trailer

  Netflix revealed plans for the latest film from Studio Colorido, Drifting Home, back in September of last year. The third animated feature from the studio is set to premiere on the streaming service worldwide this year, and the new trailer samples the "Natsugare" insert song by the band ZUTOMAYO—AKA Zutto Mayonaka de Iinoni—which will also be performing the theme song for the film.

  Hiroyasu Ishida (Penguin Highway) is directing the film, with a screenplay by Hayashi Mori, Hiroyasu Ishida, and Minaka Sakamoto. The film features character designs by Akihiro Nagae—with Fumi Kato as assistant character designer—as well as music by Umitaro Abe. Koji Yamamoto is producing and Twin Engine is credited with planning.

    Synopsis:

Kosuke and Natsume have been friends since childhood, but as time goes on the relationship between the two sixth graders seems strained as they keep avoiding one another. One day during their summer vacation, they go to a housing complex that is scheduled to be demolished. Having grown up there, the place holds a lot of memories, but while playing, they suddenly get caught up in a mysterious phenomenon and when they regain consciousness, they see an entire ocean before them as the housing complex has drifted into a mysterious sea and Kosuke and Natsume with it. Will they be able to return to their previous world? A summer farewell journey begins...

ZUTOMATO is a Japanese rock group that debuted in 2018. Their full name is “Zutto Mayonaka de Iinoni” (” ずっと真夜中でいいのに。“) which means  “ I wish it was midnight all the time“. Everything about the members of this group is anonymous except for the name of the vocalist which is ACA-ne (  ACAね ).

All of their songs have been updated on their youtube channels along with gorgeous animations, most of them are in different styles that reflect the theme of the song. For this Pinterest board, I selected screenshots from the animations that inspire me the most.

TOHO animation's Anime Music Video Project "Wonderism" Releases Its First Clip Filled with Adventure

    "Wonderism: Kimi wo Yobu Koe (The Voice That Calls You)," a new anime music video project by Toho's animation label TOHO animation, has finally posted its first video on YouTube. The story of the project is set in a world where civilization was once lost. The protagonist Natsushima, who lives on a huge floating island made by connecting ships, discovers a mysterious stone that fell from the sky. The stone, which she has never seen before in her life on the ship, leads her out to sea to discover the secrets of the world.

  The song featured in the video, "Wonderism" is performed by the four-member Japanese piano rock band Howl Be Quiet (The Dungeon of Black Company OP theme). The song was also digitally released on March 31. The band's vocalist/guitarist Kouta Takenawa says on Twitter, "I am very happy, relieved, and somewhat sad to see that the project that started last summer is now taking shape and streamed now. This is a song I want everyone who will start a new life from tomorrow to listen to. Let's do our best together!"

        Based on the original idea and concept design created by Shino (Digimon Ghost Game digimon designer), Glens Sou works on anime production. He is known for his anime music video works for Aoya Natsuki's (Hatsune Miku) "Hakushi", Zutto Mayonaka de Iinoni's "Neko Reset", and Eve's "Aisai".

ZUTOMAYO's The Promised Neverland Live-Action Film Theme Song PV Shows New Scenes

    TOHO MOVIE's official YouTube channel has posted a 100-second PV for "Tadashiku Narenai" (I can't be right) performed by a Japanese rock group Zutto Mayonaka de Iinoni. / ZUTOMATYO. The song will be featured as the theme song for the forthcoming live-action film adaptation of Kaiu Shirai (story) and Posuka Demizu (art)'s dark fantasy shonen manga Yakusoku no Neverland / The Promised Neverland and the clip consists of various scenes from the movie, including newly-introduced ones.

  The song will be released as the band's 10th digital single at 17:00 on December 17, 2020 (JST), which is one day before the film's release in Japan. The song's full music video will be also posted on the web at the same time.

  20-year-old Minami Hamabe (Yumeko Jabami in Kakegurui), who is cast as the film's protagonist Emma, says, "The theme song 'Tadashiku Narenai' exactly depicts Emma and her friends who are resisting the environment. When I first heard the song, I felt like I had a clear view of the world of the live-action film. I can't wait to see the film that will be completed when the theme song is played at the end of it. Thank you for the wonderful music."

    The live-action film adaptation is directed by 47-year-old Yuichiro Hirakawa, who previously worked on the live-action film adaptation of Kei Sanbe's mystery manga Boku dake ga Inai Machi / Erased in 2016, on a screenplay penned by his Erased partner Noriko Goto. It is set to be released in Japan on December 18, 2020.

A Curse Begins in The Night Beyond the Tricornered Window Live-Action Film Full Trailer

    The official website for the upcoming live-action film adaptation of Tomoko Yamashita's supernatural mystery manga Sankakumado no Sotogawa wa Yoru / The Night Beyond the Tricornered Window has started streaming a 60-second full trailer featuring its theme song "Kuraku Kuroku" by a Japanese rock unit Zutto Mayonaka de Iinoni. / ZUTOMAYO. The clip begins with a dialogue by Erika (Yurina Hirate), "I'm going to curse you. You will be cursed to die."

    The Yukihiro Morigaki (TV CMs for Nisshin's Cup Noodle and Cygames' smartphone game Granblue Fantasy)-directed film was originally set for  October 30, 2020, but has been postponed to January 22, 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

  The film's story begins when Rihito Hiyakawa (Masaki Okada / Kotaro Katsura in the Gintama live-action films) and Kosuke Mikado (Jun Shison /Right/ToQ 1gou in Ressha Sentai ToQger) start pursuing the mystery of a strange serial murder case at the request of Detective Hanzawa. Then a cursed body is found. As looking for the truth behind the case, they hear the voice of a serial killer who committed suicide saying, "I was cheated by Erika Hiura..." Erika Hiura (Yurina Hirate / ex-Keyakizaka46 member) is the name that the two have heard many times during their previous cases to remove the spirits of the dead. Erika looks like an ordinary high school girl at first glance, but in fact, she has a strong curse power and darkness in her heart.

The Promised Neverland Live-Action Film Posts Full Trailer Introducing Theme Song by ZUTOMAYO

    The official website for the forthcoming live-action film adaptation of Kaiu Shirai (story) and Posuka Demizu (art)'s dark fantasy shonen manga Yakusoku no Neverland / The Promised Neverland has posted a 90-second full trailer featuring its theme song "Tadashiku Narenai" (I can't be right) performed by a Japanese rock group Zutto Mayonaka de Iinoni. / ZUTOMATYO.

  The unit started its activities by posting its first music video "Byoushin wo Kamu" on YouTube in June 2018, then released their major debut mini-album "Tadashi Itsuwari kara no Kishou" from EMI Records in October of the same year. 

  20-year-old Minami Hamabe (Yumeko Jabami in Kakegurui), who is cast as the film's protagonist Emma, says, "I have loved Zutto Mayonaka de Iinoni.-san's worldview and listened to their songs, so it was reassuring that they provided a theme song for the world of YakuNeba. The theme song 'Tadashiku Narenai' exactly depicts Emma and her friends who are resisting the environment.
