He looked in the mirror for a long time. Clothes, for him were like masks. You put an outfit on, and you changed. You hid who you were.

This outfit was…a bit much. But the louder an outfit was, the better the mask.

Red. Red jacket, with a retro fit. Red pants. Pale gold shirt with tiger stripes, silk. He checked the fit, the tightness of the buttons across his chest, and decided that it was his imagination, that it looked fine. He slicked back his hair, nodded again.

If you were there, in Casablanca, and you saw him, you were going to pitch a fit laughing.

His reverie was interrupted by a knock on the door. He practically trips over the edge of the bed to get to it, to open it.

It’s the cleaner. He flexes his jaw a little, at her earnest face. “I am sorry, I should have put the sign out.” He searched for the Do Not Disturb card. “I don’t seem to have a do not disturb sign…do you have one?”

She looked at her car, shook her head. “I’d ask the front desk for one.”

He nods, pushes back into his room with a muttered thanks.

He leaves a moment later, sun glasses on, movements bigger, more relaxed. Showtime.

He grabbed a drink, and circulated the tables. Flirted outrageously with every woman he came across. Spent money. Won and lost and tipped big in either case.

For a moment, he thought he found you. Maybe. A gold sheathe dress, your hair up. The way you tilted your head, the curve of your cheek. But something wasn’t right.

The woman in the gold sheathe dress looked over her shoulder, and he knew it wasn’t you. You, maybe, the last time he saw you, a mirror image to the pictures in his head. But not you. You would be older.

“You found her quickly.”

Now that, that was you. He looked over his shoulder. You were there, elegant despite the cheap pants suit. Hair up, no nonsense look on your face. He arches his eyebrow. “You got a job in security?”

A soft smile. “Better than serving drinks.”

He nodded towards her. Tried to do the math in his head. You caught on – you could read him so easily.

“She’s not yours.” A wry smile. Regret honest and clear in your eyes. “Every day I wish she was.”

He looks away. “She would have inherited my nose, and then where would she be?”

“College.” You deadpan. “Instead of being involved with a man who knows the location of several desert graveyards.”

His shoulders fall for a moment. “Seriously?”

“We run towards trouble. That’s the family way.

“And he’s not letting her go? Does she even want to?” Neither of you look at each other, paying attention to everything else, but he is aware. So aware of you behind him. Do you think of me, then? He wants to ask. Do you think of how we spent every summer together and swore we were the other half of each other? Do you remember that one week you came and stayed with me and then everything fell apart?

“Yes. She’s just scared. Stay at the hotel. I’ll get her to you.”

“Then what?”

“You go. Your parents taught you how to disappear. Use it.”

“And what about you?”

She is silent.

“I won’t leave without you.” He looks at her. He means it.

“You will.” She says gently. “I’ll follow. But the only thing that matters is her.”

She steps away, and he leaves. A little in a huff, so that later, if they ask, you can say you scared him off. That something about him wasn’t right.

It’s early. He walks around the pool. He hates himself, sometimes, how caught he is in the past. He sits on a chair and looks at a picture of the two of you. Without fail, his parents would go and stay in the same place every summer. Spend time with the family. Plan the next big thing. Sometimes they came back big, flush with money, and it was all big family dinners in restaurants, tables pushed together. Sometimes they came back with their tails between their legs, and then it was quite cook outs on the beach.

And you were always there. Some step cousin’s step daughter once removed or something. He never could remember what. But he drew you in, made sure you felt wanted. Kept you from being lost and neglected on the fringe.

Sometimes he laughed at himself, for never moving on from the gangly girl in the rose petal filled pool. Or from the sharp eyed goth chick you were, that winter, when you came to him and said, Leave with me. Your mouth tasting like clove cigarettes and promises. He tried. He did. But no one ever really quite fit.

He closed the book, took off his jacket. It was hot, for the time of year. He thought he might melt.

He stood at the edge of the pool. I saw her again.

He dove in, down into the deep end, and let himself sink to the bottom. He looked up through the water, the chlorine stinging his eyes.

But nothing is ever exactly how we hope it will be.

He folds his arm on the side of the pool. Sees the attendant pause at his door. He closes his eyes, knows he should get out, that maybe you’ll call.

He thinks for a moment that if he lets go of the side of the pool, the sheer horrific weight of hope will bear him down to the bottom and never let him back up.

A large number of the city's foundations have the vibe of somebody's parlor – like Scârț Loc Lejer, a bric-a-brac bar possessed by a craftsman's group, with a congested nursery, a bordering theater and a gallery of Communist commercialization in the cellar. Somewhere else, there are hopping club evenings at underground Database and practices at the graffiti'd Aethernativ Café, with faint echoes of early Noughties Berlin.

There are celebrations in Timișoara for everything from world music to film, Romany workmanship and jazz, the last of which has consistently been enormous here, in any event, when Ceaușescu pushed it underground. The National Opera House has drama and expressive dance works of art, with tickets at the cost of an IPA in London, and the craftsmanship goes from a road workmanship display in a street passage to the Muzeul de Arta's assortment of wry pictures by Corneliu Baba. All of which drove it to be named European Capital of Culture for 2021, an assignment which might get pushed back a couple of years in the wake of Covid-19. Name or not, this is a legitimate city of culture, and definitely worth a city break.

While its Ottoman-affected harbor and spaghetti bowl of cobble-stoned roads are gently delightful, Chania is sneaking up all of a sudden with regards to its food. From basic ocean side bistros to lovely Cretan high end food, this city on the north-west shore of the Greek island has a select yet rapidly growing scene that is tricking in master palates.

The light of the sun was pouring by the large windows of the front of the store. Splashing the pastel navy blue walls,making the pearly white tables glow and giving to the cupcakes, cakes and other pastries in the display a halo like a foodie filter.

Placing the last maple bacon donuts in the white box of your twelve specialties,you quickly closed the top before giving it to the last customers of this mid journey rush.

Even if the bakery had a regular flow of customers during the day. The most important part was usually in the morning, giving to the soldiers and citizens a breakfast on the go with a healthy / unhealthy muffin or a sugar rush with a little pastry, often joined by a coffee. The second was more in the middle of the afternoon, where the hard work of the day wakes up the craving of sugar, or, when dinner invitations are set and the idea of buying a cake for dessert in the simplest and laziest part of the preparation.

“ Here you go, have a nice day and please come back soon “ You finish the transaction, offering him a professional smile.

“ Thank you, have a good day too“ The man replied, pushing the exit door.

“ We just sold the last maple bacon donuts, but we still have some maple bacon square “ You inform Amber, the youngest member of your staff, working that day in the kitchen.

“ I can make another batch if you want “ She offert, watching you from the kitchen door put the little sold out card in the donuts display.

“ No, we will just make more tomorrow “ You reply, giving a glance to the large window where you can see the cars of news customers taking their place in the parking lot.

“ Okay, the eclairs are almost ready ! “

Your comeback in the small town of Wild Horse in Colorado, three years ago, wasn’t really what you expected of life. At least for the first years. Sure, a good part of your family was there and you hadn’t to deal with most of the problems of living in a big city. But, as a baker, the job opportunity was a little bit restricted, forcing you sometimes to work from home, using your own small kitchen.

Until last year. You were coming back from a personal delivery for a customer when you saw it. An empty store for rent, the perfect little shop for your cake and other sweets.

Helped by your uncle Brad and his wife. You started your small business, ending soon to meet a bigger success that expected. Mostly due to the sweet tooth of the many soldiers of the new military space base, your hard work and the fact that everybody in that little town knew how good your pastry was.

It takes you almost a month of running from the kitchen to the service counter and your generous but tired aunt, to realize you needed help. It was a true chance that Sylvia and Patrick, who were moving in town with their military partner, were searching for a baker job. Amber, at the time, was finishing school and wanted some work experience before trying to explore the world by herself.

Giving a glance at your phone, watching for a possible notification, you sadly put it back in the pocket of you apron. One week has passed since your last interaction with F. Tony via the Space Force Twitter and a small part of you, you had to admit, were secretly scared that he decided to stop the little game of tweet.

Never did it occur to you that he didn’t know that you were behind Moonlight Cake and his Twitter. After all, you both meet during one of your visits to your uncle. Did he never watch the cake box you carried ?

Well, to be fair, you didn’t either notice or remember a lot of things other than him that day.

The time was rainy and it was one of the first times you visited the work space of Brad. You knew that you crossed the path of some of your regular customers and that the low grade general was constantly talking about something you can’t remember. You somewhere get introduced to the general Naird who manages to be polite but exasperated of your civil presence at the same time.

But, your attention had suddenly been caught by the tall man in the light blue suit, tapping on his phone, contouring the solar system art piece like a pro before standing behind the four star general.

You knew at the first look on this hair gel, silk tie and leather shoes that this man wasn’t coming from town. Not that the mens of Wild Horse were ugly. Few were, in your opinion, actually kind of cute if you like the rural style, and they certainly could put together a suit and a tie if the occasion needed it. But, they still could never look as awesome as him.

“ Y/N, it’s F. Tony, F. Tony it’s Y/N my niece” Your uncle Brad introduces, his reserved voice telling you partly his opinion on the man.

“ Fuck Anthony Scarapiducci Media Manager. Really glad to meet you “ He continu, lifting his hand to shake yours, caughting your gaze with his sparkly brown eyes.

In that instant, in front of this white smile, you had the fastest crush of your life. You had tried to hide it as much as you could, smiling as you shaked his hand and hoped to not look like a fool.

“ Nice to meet you Mr. Scarapiducci, glad to meet you too” You had replied, secretly wondering if you seemed too casual in your jeans and loose blouse.

“ F. Tony please, or just Tony...Will you work with us ? “ He had kindly asked, putting his phone in his pocket.

“ No, actually I have a little store in town, I was just passing by to give my uncle some lemon squares “

“ That's so sweet of you, visiting your old uncle like that “

“ I’m not that old F. Tony…” Brad had vainly protested.

The general Naird had suddenly talked, cutting your conversation, ordering at Tony to come with him on his office for a thing he called a stupid meeting.

“ Follow us on Twitter and I hope to see you around sometimes “ The tall man told you, walking backward for a bit, following the quick path of the military man without turning his back.

Smiling, you waved your hand and promised to come back often.

And then, maybe a week later, the first tweet from Space Force to Moonlight cake came and you simply thought he knew. After all, he was always so nice and flirty each time that you visit the base. As well as in his tweet to the bakery.

The fact that he didn’t, took you by surprise. You knew that you could have simply answered him that you were behind Moonlight cake, but, the idea of making him discover by twitter had seemed more safer and tempting at the same time.

But now, after a week without an answer, you start to doubt that it was a good thing to do.

Serving the last customer of the day, you slowly turn the open card to close. Another good day over.

“ Y/N,I made a preparation in the fridge for tomorrow. If you don’t need me I will go home“ The voice of Amber calling you from the kitchen she just finished to clean.

“ Yes you can leave, thank you for today !” You answer, taking out the money of the cash register and putting it on the safe.

“ See you tomorrow, don’t work to late “

Waving of the hand, you promise, cleaning the counter of the others hand.

Keeping you busy with the cleanup of the store, trying to think of nothing other than the preparation for the next day, you suddenly stand up, the table you were cleaning forgotten.

In front of the glass door, a unusual shy smile on his lips, Fuck Tony Scarapiducci was waving at you.

sports run deep in your family. your grandfather, your father, your older brother : the triple threat of sports, each cutting their way through their own league ( the mlb, the nhl, and the nfl — RESPECTIVELY ). you were never as gifted as any of them athletically — good enough, smart enough, but nothing more than a decent athlete that could hold your own. no, instead you picked up a camera and this is how you fit in.

AESTHETICS: she is like the summer nights when the stars are far away and the fire is dying out, the sun’s warmth a comforting memory and all the potential of tomorrow ready to be spread out before you ( worn out timberland boots, pink lipstick, short and flowy dresses, fireflies in a jar, a denim jacket covered in patches, the heat of a sparkler against your fingers, do no harm but take no shit, coy smiles because you want something, the smell of balsam and pine needles )

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐘

— she was adopted when she was just under two years old from turkey when her parents decided they wanted a little girl, so the clearwaters have always felt like her family to her. she knew the greater part of growing up that she was adopted, it just never was an issue for her. recently, though, she has felt like she should reconnect with her native middle eastern heritage.

— the clearwaters are a triple threat in sports : her grandfather retired mlb player and coach, her father a retired prominent defenseman in the nhl and current dartmouth men’s hockey coach, and her older brother michael ( 26 and always mikey to her ) is making a splash in his third year in the nfl as a wide receiver. however, her parents made sure she and her brother had a ( fairly ) average “middle class” bringing up, though they had their fair share of money in the bank. didn’t have to struggle, really, but didn’t get everything she wanted either. had a summer job scooping ice cream for two years in high school.

— grew up in norwich, vt, real big on nature and hiking and all that jazz. she’s always down for an adventure and to go hiking.

— when she was ten she got one of those kid’s polaroid cameras ( u know the ones where the film is only a little bigger than a postage stamp ) and she was obsessed. she worked her way up through cameras over the years, having a natural eye for it.

— one of the first games she ever shot was one of her brother’s high school football games which sounds sweet but it was actually because she was so bored out of her mind and wanted something to do. needless to say, though, that was the start of it. some might say it was kind of inevitable she gravitated toward sports somehow — she was a clearwater at heart. since then she has gained a lot of knowledge and respect for all different kinds of sports.

— for college she was torn between dartmouth, nyu, and halston. she ultimately chose halston because it was somewhere new, though the elite photography program at nyu was hard to pass up.

— her freshman year ayla was at as many games she could physically get it every weekend, shooting and shooting and shooting, until eventually the office took notice of her. her sophomore year she split time between the men’s hockey and football teams ( and a few other games of other sports where she could grab them ). a couple of her photos have been used for the banners outside the football field and hockey arenas, one across the header of the football team’s website, and several in the yearbook, including a two page spread shot of roo carlson that she’s very proud of.

— PROFESSIONALLY, she has managed to shoot a few kings, dodgers, and lakers games as well. she’s held an internship with the la galaxy from the spring of her freshman year to early fall of her sophomore year. she then accepted an internship with bernstein associates, official photographers of the la kings, clippers, dodgers, and lakers, this past summer.

— she does a little freelance work as well ; mostly for friends or friends of friends, though she’s been considering lately trying to make her skills and business available in a more professional manner to begin building an image for when she graduates. she does do a lot of photographing for herself — a lot of candids ; she thinks they capture the true spirit of a person moreso than when they’re posing or prepared for a photo.

𝐌𝐈𝐒𝐂

— just got a new camera + lens ( nikon D500 + fancy zoom lens ) last summer as an early birthday present to herself. she practically become one with it over the course of the summer and she’s rarely separate from it. that thing cost her so much money and is her baby okay.

— she hopes someday to be the team photographer for a professional team, hopefully in one of the “big four” ( mlb, nfl, nba, or nhl ), and she thinks her prospects are looking very good.

— she played field hockey and lacrosse through high school.

— ayla thinks she’s better at shooting people. part of what she loves about being a sports photographer is how active and unpredictable it is to shoot a game. she’s had to learn a lot to try to predict what she can. they say you make your own luck and for a sports photographer that is true. part of it is down to chance, but there are things you can learn about the game in order to increase your chances of being in the right place at the right time.

— very much a morning person. has never had a problem waking up in the morning. typically goes for a run at sunrise, and has showered, gotten ready for the day, and is at a local cafe shop editing photos / making graphics and drinking an iced mocha by 8. truly couldn’t be me…

— you can often find her watching practices, not just to practice shooting but to learn more about what makes each team and player tick in order to improve her ability to predict their tendencies ( which in turn makes her chances of getting a good photo go up ). she takes her craft very seriously.

— she has a policy of not sleeping with or dating players on the teams that she shoots — it’s called professionalism, boys !! she likes to be respected and somehow doesn’t think that sleeping with the players goes very far for her in that regard. that doesn’t mean the players don’t try, though...

— she has struggled a bit with people who think her opportunities have only arisen because of her family pedigree ( which some have gone so far to tell her they’re “not her family” — which, don’t even go there, lads... ), and that has made ayla work all that much harder to prove that she’d gotten where she has on her own merits.

— so desperately wants to be that girl with tons of cute aesthetic plants in her room but tragically plants always die in her care no matter what she does. probably has gotten one of those tiny tabletop sand zen gardens to make herself feel better tho she still keeps trying with plants. so far the only ones that have lived any length of time are the air plants. there is no hope.

𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐘

— she’s generally well liked, with a hint of sass and humor. she comes across as a bit of an air-head at times, but that’s part due to a persona she put on from a young age. she has an observant eye that drew to her photography in the first place and will often allow her to draw certain conclusions about people.

— ayla has a very down to earth outlook and approach to life, often taking things as they come. she’s adaptable to situations, but manages to usually stay to the original path she saw for herself.

— she’s well versed in all the sports she shoots, something that tends to surprise a lot of people, but how is she supposed to be good at her job if she isn’t ? if she gets bothered during games she typically shuts people down with wide eyes and some obscure bit of knowledge in her cute, raspy lil voice. dareisay… elle woods, what like it’s hard ? energy ?? she’s a hard worker, and strives for everything she posts or hands in to be perfect.

— a few of her downfalls include her narcissism and need to be liked. she looks to look and feel pretty, by her own standards, and is a queen of the self-timer and remote self photography : has two instas because of it – one for her sports photography and one that’s a “personal” and mostly just pictures of herself.

— her need to be liked is something she doesn’t even realize. she likes to be seen in a positive light and it can on occasion lead to her agreeing to do things she doesn’t really want to. at the same time this is constantly in conflict with her desire to be independent and be her own person.

— she also just believes that everyone just does like her because she is a likeable and very down to earth person — both of which are true for the most part, but reveals the blurring line she has between confidence and arrogance. she can be quite judgmental at times, especially towards those who are overly dramatic, but they’re confined more to just thoughts than any actual voiced words or actions. in a way, this feeds into a sense of her own self-arrogance.

𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐄

— alya stands at 5′3″ with a slim but athletic build. she has a runner’s body, deceptively strong, lithe, and built for distance.

— warm brown eyes that look like they’re laughing more often than not.

— her hair is naturally brown, but is dyed to have blonde highlights near the bottom. often styled half up & half down, kept down and loose, or in a messy bun.

— she does not need glasses or contacts and has no tattoos.

— piercings & jewelry: both lobes and cartilage. often wears simple black studs in all of them ; has an affinity for simple silver rings, often wearing two on each hand ; a black timex watch she bought for $20 at target that’s waterproof

— style : she’s almost always wearing the same pair of beat up timberland’s she’s owned since like sophomore year of high school. she likes to be able to move easily ( bc homegirl absolutely cannot walk in heels at all ). despite this, she also likes to look cute at the same time, often pairing them with short, flowy sundresses or skirts + crop tops. when she shoots games, however, she’s dressed rather practically in skinny jeans, a crop top, and a cardigan ( if necessary ).

— PINTEREST BOARD HERE

𝐖𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐃 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒

— pretty girl like you ( any ) : someone who does not understand why ayla is “wasting” her talents on sports and thinks she should try moving into the fashion or modeling business. i don’t think this is necessarily a negative connection — it could be well intentioned, or maybe it is truly just meant to be scathing.

— you & me were never meant to be ( any, female wld be real lit tho 👀 ) : an ex from her earlier years at halston. i imagine they broke up either before the summer of her sophomore year or early in her sophomore year. there’s not much ayla loves more than her photography, and i think maybe they didn’t understand. could have been mutual, could have ended poorly, could have just.... fizzled out. pretty open !! i’d just like her to have an ex.

— you just don’t get the message ( male ) : someone who is just relentlessly pursuing her ( not in an overly creepy way, y’know tho ). someone she’s told no multiple times and yet he still keeps trying rip. — TAKEN BY OWEN

author note: i’m very new to tumblr, it would be nice if you left a comment, a note or even reblogged it. this is my very first oneshot and it was in the draft for long so I brought it out. hope you enjoy reading ! (the header is too big for my desktop theme i’m gonna fix it soon! for now i just advice you (if you read on desktop website; to zoom in and then my header won’t be so annoying hoping it helps)

(adj) lasting for a very short time.

I nearly startled in my seat when a new sound pierced through the deafening silence. Steps and breaths followed by a small cough. I gazed up and realized I wasn’t the only one in the train coupé. Opposite in the plush seats sat a boy. He ran a hand through his blonde hair with a striking streak of blue hair disheveled on his forehead, sniffled with his cute nose, and gave me picture-perfect smile. On his white t-shirt, the print said over there, and he did look over at me.

“You are staring,” He said.

All of the sudden my cheeks felt warm, they would be rosy red.

“You are staring” I replied as I let the defense position take control over my choice of words.

His eyebrow was raised for a short moment before he smirked.

“You are worth looking at.”

Two weeks went by and Jaemin and I were together at least seven days out of the 14 days. He continually made me do things that I didn’t even dare to do before. In the public swimming pool, he made a jump from the highest diving board. The sinking you get in the stomach when you stand several meters over the pool’s surface and look down at the pit of it. The sinking feeling typically goes away as soon as you hit the water’s surface. That was not the case for me. For when I swam up through the clear chlorinated water, there stood a beaming Jaemin who would pat my head. He made the sinking feeling continue.

I sat with Jaemin in his dining room. The light from the ceiling lamp shone down on the food in the otherwise dark room. There was an awkward silence. Jaemin smiled at me whilst his brother shook his head. The brother gave him a small nudge.

“Is it now wrong to smile at one’s girlfriend” He grinned.

He always did it; he always had to break the silence. I took a bite of my plate, the food burned down my throat.

“It tastes delicious,” I said.

“It’s good you like it, Jaemin told me it’s your favorite dish.” His mother said.

She nodded towards him as he sheepishly grinned while rubbing his neck. He then coughed and the silence came again. Now the brother wasn’t the slightest irritated - he was worried. He looked over at his mother who just looked at the ground mumbling something. Nobody said anything. Butterflies started erupting in my stomach, not the usual colorful tranquil ones. These were dark and panicking in there.

Jaemin followed me home. The moon illuminated the small sideway we took as the silence overfilled everything. You could clearly hear the first raindrop that reached the asphalt. It sounded like an earthquake when Jaemin cleared his throat. Or was it a cough? I was reminded by the dinner and the sudden mood shift. The butterflies breaking out of their cocoons.

“Jaemin?” I asked. He froze.

“What happened earlier?”

The sound of his strides became louder and louder, mixed with the splashing sounds by the raindrops. He didn’t say anything, just stared out in the rain, raindrops trickling down his face.

“Jaemin what happened?”

My hand pushed his shoulder the hot tears pressing behind my eyes.

“Just…say something”

He finally stopped and looked at me with a piercing gaze.

“Say we always will be together,” He said.

“What?”

“Y/N, say we always will be together.”

The cold raindrops dripped from his body, but not even a hurricane could move him out of place. Not until he had what he wanted; me.

“We’ll always be together,” I promised.

“Do you believe in life after death?” Jaemin asked me once, we’ve had been together for almost a year. Sunlight streamed through the windows, it reached his dreamy eyes framed by long lashes and his astronomic telescope on the table. He also had luminous stars in the ceiling and prints of the universe on the curtains. I liked that about his room.

“I would like to believe, in life after death. I don’t like the thought of it all just ends,” I replied after thinking my answer it through. My voice was the only sound that broke the silence.

“I’m not Christian,” He said, “- but I would like to believe in life after death too,”

I shrugged and asked:

“How would Paradise look like?”

“I don’t know. As long as you are there.”

He showcased me a toothy smile, and a warm feeling grew in my body.

One night Jaemin and I wanted to watch the meteor shower together. We were laying in my back-yard waiting. A small cloud of steam formed when Jaemin coughed. He was there waiting intently. Like a little kid waiting for permission to take a bite of a cake. My hands fiddled with a brown withered leaf and pulled my hands into my body as the cold feeling started to spread in my body. I was just about to lose my patience and asking if we could stay outside but then Jaemin pointed.

“There!” He shouted with a high-pitched voice. I laughed by his excitement.

I did not see the first shooting star although it did not matter considering there went a few seconds before a new one appeared on the night sky. It continued. Thousands of stars flew across the night sky, like random blobs of paint littered across the sky as it infinite canvas. We were laying for a long time whilst Jaemin eyes were glued to the night sky, wide open, whereas mine were always fluttering waiting to let me shut them.

“Y/N, you can’t fall asleep.”

I rolled onto my side.

“I’m so tired”

However, Jaemin insisted until I promised to stay up with him and watch the meteor shower.

The morning after I was awakened by Jaemin, he shook me, and his facial expression was enough to send me trembling. He trashed roughly around in the blankets and his right arm was sticky and sweaty on top of his right leg which was red swollen. With shaking hands, I called an ambulance.

When the ambulance finally arrived, everything was chaos. I had no figures on how many men were running around in luminous jackets, and I tried not to catch a glimpse of Jaemin who laid half-unconscious on the stretcher.

The short trip to the hospital felt like hours. I sat and stared out the window at the tailgate. The world continued. Jaemin laid on the stretcher. At one point I tried to squeeze his hand, but he didn't squeeze back and it made me cry even more

“What is going on?” I asked his mum. She took a deep shuddering breath and looked at the ceiling. I could not see if she was trying to hold her tears back.

“When you have… “Her eyes shut in a concentrating way whilst she continued: “…Lung cancer. When you have lung cancer there is a bigger probability for deep vein thrombosis in the legs.”

There, the mild smell of cleanliness in the hospital went from being pleasant to awful, and the sound of the nurses' clicking shoes outside became unbearable. I just went out and spread his ashes. They would have buried him, but I told them I would not let him rot. Jaemin was too ethereal to rot in the underground, he belonged to the celestial world like the twinkling star of life he was. That wish is probably the only thing I've said all week. Otherwise, I just nodded. I nod to people when they say they are condoling. I nod to my mother when she glanced sees me with a pitiful look in the eyes sighing.

I don't know what else to do. But I didn't nod as Jaemin flew away with the wind; I cried.

I bike home. It's a beautiful day, but it's as if I don't feel the beauty. The sun shines on my face but I can’t feel its warmth. The wind whispers in my neck, but it’s not pleasant. Chapter 191: Madara/Tobirama

When he was young Tobirama paid little attention to the dots of color on his face. They didn’t hurt or impede his fun in any way and lots of the adults around him had some sort of color on their skin too. If it wasn’t unusual he didn’t see a point in worrying over it and if he wasn’t worrying about it then he didn’t see a point in asking many questions. The dots spread out across his face so gradually he hardly noticed until one day he looked in the mirror and saw lines instead.

He went, of course, to the one person he knew he could trust with any question.

“They’re part of your soul mark,” Hashirama told him. “Everyone has something. See? Here’s mine!” His brother kicked off one shoe and pulled down his stocking to show off the splash of green painted along the bottom of his foot, something Tobirama had seen many times before yet never thought to question.

“But they’re getting bigger.”

“Yeah, of course, that’s what they do!”

Tobirama blinked, bringing a hand up to cup one of his cheeks and squeezing the lingering baby fat with worry. “So they won’t ever stop growing? What if they cover me everywhere? Then I’ll be red all over!”

“Um…that can happen, yeah. Remember the Lady Yamanaka?”

He certainly remembered the Lady Yamanaka, a prominent figure at court until swirls of blue began to creep up from below her collar and her father sent her away back to the family estate. At the time Tobirama hadn’t understood why, nor had he cared, and even now that he knew the reason he still wasn’t sure he knew why she needed to be sent away. If the colors were their soul marks then why was it bad for them to be seen? Should he be hiding his own?

“Why didn’t her father want anyone to see her colors? Lots of people’s colors show all the time.”

“It’s kind of hard to explain. With the common folk its fine to let your soul mark grow but for the important people, well, Mama says we’re supposed to be better than the common folk. We’re supposed to have everything they don’t.” Hopping around trying to stuff his foot back in to his stocking, Hashirama gave an inelegant shrug. “If your mark is still growing then it means you haven’t found your soulmate yet. I guess some people are ashamed of that.”

“But why?”

“I dunno. People do a lot of silly things. Do you want to come climb the apple trees with me in the orchard?” Hashirama beamed at him, all innocence and easy distraction.

Still patting at his own cheek Tobirama frowned. “You’ll get in trouble if you spoil your clothes again. Father says that a prince must always look his best.”

“Do you want to come or not?”

“Yes, Anija.”

Willing to forget such questions if his big brother didn’t think it was important enough to keep talking about, Tobirama allowed the older boy to take hold of one wrist and pull him away towards the other end of the palace where the apple trees grew so tall they could climb to the top and look over in to the courtyards where strong knights practiced their sword work.

Over the years as he grew Tobirama managed to ask his other questions but he never quite managed to ignore the way his marks continued to grow. Unlike others he was lucky enough to have his marks begin on his face and expand downwards where no one but he and his closest family would even see how far they had reached. When he was younger he made a habit of checking every day to see how the lines had grown, trying to predict which direction they might swoop or curl towards next, but as he grew older he fell out of the habit.

Partly because staring at one’s own skin could only be entertaining for so long before it got old. The lines would never stop growing until he met his soulmate and whatever shapes they made had little impact on his everyday life. But also partly out of fear, out of a quiet sort of terror that one day he would wake to find that the lines close to his wrists would expand and slip through the cuffs of his silken shirts to prove for the world that he was doomed to spend the rest of his life alone. And despite his older brother’s assurances Tobirama was quite certain he would spend his life alone just as his younger brother Itama.

Poor sweet Itama, born with hair as white as Tobirama’s only have it darken strand by strand in the inevitable expansion of his own unique mark, locked away from the moment their parents realized the shame he would always wear. How they could ever expect him to find his soulmate was a mystery when his only contacts were the brothers that visited him and the servants who were each instructed to never look upon him.

It was in Itama that Tobirama found most of his comfort when the looming dread of not finding his own match could not be pushed to the back of his mind any longer and it was to Itama’s rooms that he retreated on the day of his nineteenth birthday when he discovered something horrifying. His brother lifted both eyebrows in question to see Tobirama burst in to and throw himself across the mattress with almost as much drama as they could usually expect from their eldest sibling.

“This will be my life,” Tobirama declared.

“Something is wrong, I take it?” Itama closed the journal he had been writing in but otherwise didn’t move.

“My marks are moving again. Up my throat. I thought the one around the base of my neck was finished growing, I thought I was fine with high collars, but now it’s extending and you know what Father will do if it gets high enough for the court to see it.” Rolling over on to his back, Tobirama scowled up at the ceiling. He’d always known this was a possibility. “At least I’ll have you for company.”

A very deep silence stretched out after his words, long enough that he wondered if he had spoken aloud as he meant to or if the words were only inside his head. When he looked over at his brother, however, Itama’s cheeks had gone a very hilarious shade of blotchy red. He’d never been a graceful blusher.

“Um…about that…” His hesitant words had Tobirama upright in an instant.

“What about that?”

“I think – and this is only speculation, I have not yet confirmed – I think I may have found my soulmate.”

“You–? Are you being serious?” When Itama nodded all the air left Tobirama’s lungs in a great whoosh. “Ita that is incredible. Why have you not said anything? How are sitting in here writing so calmly? If I had found my match I would be, I don’t know, probably shoving it in Father’s face for starters.”

His brother laughed and brought his journal up to hug it against his chest. “Like I said, I’m not certain yet. You know I keep a close eye on my hair and I think there haven’t been any new dark strands for several days but I need to ask…the other person first if they’ve experienced the same thing.” He looked fit to burst with excitement and it was clear how relieved he was to have someone else to talk to about this.

Tobirama ran a hand throw his own hair and stood up to walk across the room and take Itama in to his arms for a rare gesture of familial affection. His sibling melted against him with a smile.

“Congratulations. May I know who? I can’t imagine anyone new you might have met.”

“Ah. That would be the other reason I’d like to be sure before going public. I don’t think Father will be thrilled to find out that one of his sons is matched to someone of the common folk.”

“Right!” A light went off in Tobirama’s memories. “Your old caretaker, she retired. One of the new servants then – they were both men, yes?”

“Yes. Two brothers around your age.” If Itama held any more excitement inside his short body he would surely begin to vibrate. It was the happiest Tobirama could remember seeing his brother in years and the sight warmed his heart perhaps a little more than he would ever admit to out loud.

Stepping back to clear his throat and pretend he was not getting disgustingly emotional, Tobirama nodded. “I’m very happy for you. If it’s alright with you I should like to stay and meet him.”

Itama saw no reason to object to that and so Tobirama settled in. Of the three brothers allowed to roam the rest of the palace he was the one best at keeping his mouth shut about other people’s personal business. There was no one better in the entire city to trust with the secret of Itama’s possible soulmate. A prince and a pauper; it amused him greatly that despite all of the king’s efforts to hide his son away from the world it had still been him to send the boy his own soulmate.

The two of them had been chatting quietly for somewhat more than an hour before there came a knock on the door and when it opened at Itama’s call a young man entered with his gaze lowered and black hair cascading around him in thick spikes. Tobirama looked to his brother with a knowing grin that faded as quickly as it came when Itama quietly shook his head no.

Yet he couldn’t help but look again even if this wasn’t the one he was so curious to meet. Over the years he had met with lords and ladies of every station and from many lands and here was a mere servant boy more beautiful than them all. The world around him almost seemed to fade away for a few moments as he watched the boy move across the room, his almost regal mane of hair billowing out behind him like a fine cloak, long lashes sweeping against rounded cheeks each time he blinked. Even the strangely clumsy way he walked as though ready to trip over his own feet at any given moment was oddly charming.

After several long moments of staring Tobirama forced himself to look away – only to find Itama watching him with one hand in front of his mouth to muffle the laughter shaking his shoulders.

“Keep laughing, brother,” Tobirama snarled. “I’ll dye your hair pink again.”

“You know I always enjoy a little zest in my day,” Itama retorted.

Sniffing with exaggerated haughtiness, Tobirama shoved his nose as high in the air as he could without blocking his view of where he was going and made his way to the door. Then he realized he’d just made a fool of himself as a first impression for the pretty servant boy and very quickly did his best to look like he was hurrying somewhere important rather than running away in embarrassment.

Curiosity wouldn’t allow him to stay away for long and as soon as he had seen to his duties for the day Tobirama was back in Itama’s room and being introduced to the young man his sibling believed was his soulmate. Izuna, as was apparently his name, had smooth dark hair pulled back in to a long tail and narrow eyes Tobirama couldn’t help but think were made for glaring at the backs of anyone who spoke down to him simply for being born in to the lower caste. He was a perfectly polite man and yet every word he spoke was covered with layers of deeper thought that hinted at an intelligence any noble could only hope for in their own children.

And he also, evidently, had noticed his own soul mark was no longer growing soon after meeting the hidden prince he had been called upon to serve. One surreptitious glance at Itama’s hair was all it had taken for him to know for sure. In the midst of that revelation Tobirama slipped away again to give the two of them some privacy. The few short minutes he’d had to meet with Izuna and take in all the information he could was enough time for him to guess that the boy would be good for Itama and he hoped they were already thinking of ways to curb the King’s inevitable anger when he discovered their match.

Despite all the excitement of his brother’s good news, however, neither Itama nor Izuna were the one that stayed on his mind for the rest of the evening. Instead he found himself constantly distracted with thoughts of the beautiful servant boy he had seen that morning. All through the rest of his evening he thought about shoulders that held themselves proudly despite his station and how all that dark hair would look wrapped around pale white fingers. Memories of thick lashes followed him down in to his dreams and haunted him still when he woke the morning after.

He had to see the boy again.

Tobirama himself barely counted as a boy anymore, fresh past his nineteenth birthday, but knowing the immaturity rampant in his own age group it was hard to think of any of them as men quite yet so it hardly mattered whether the pretty servant was younger or older. He was still pretty.

It was with him in mind and the situation that led to them meeting that made Tobirama check his markings, little more than a wistful whim that morning. He hadn’t looked at the lines on his body any earlier than yesterday so it was easy to dismiss the idea that they didn’t seem to have grown any more. Clearly that was nothing but a figment of his own imagination, purely wishful thinking. Tobirama scoffed at his own reflection and told himself coincidences like that just didn’t happen.

Of course, because he very sternly told himself that he should forget about this, obviously it was the only thing on his mind for the next several days. Each morning he woke the first thing he did was strip and inspect every line he could find on his body to see if any of them were moving. His skin had many lines and from experience he knew that not all of them grew at the same time or rate. After several days he began to think that maybe he hadn’t actually overreacted at all. Nearly a week without finding a single line on his body that had moved so much as a fraction of an inch had to mean something.

Which meant that now he had to go talk to the one he thought might be his soulmate. There was a chance it wasn’t the boy he wanted it to be, unfortunately. New faces were always showing up in his father’s court and Tobirama didn’t usually take the time to memorize all of them or even remember their names, not when he knew they would be gone again in just a few day or weeks, however long it took their parents to realize he and his other unattached brother Kawarama were not interested. But there was only one way to find out for sure whether the soulmate picked for him by fate was a random unwanted stranger or a beautiful serving boy and that was to actually go ask awkward questions.

He wasn’t sure if it was a good thing or a bad thing when he entered Itama’s rooms to see his sibling cross legged on the floor with both his own soulmate and the one Tobirama had been hoping to find here. All three boys turned to look at him, two lowering their gazes on reflex as soon as they recognized a member of the royal family, but Itama only smiled.

“You’ll never guess what a little birdie told me,” he said. At his side the one Tobirama had come to see turned bright red and dipped his face a bit lower.

“I’m sure it was fascinating and very embarrassing for everyone but that’s not what I am here for.”

“Oh?” Itama lifted both brows in a smug expression that Tobirama did his best not to speculate about.

Forcing himself to retain the poise he had been trained to uphold since birth, he turned to the servant boy with hair pooling around him on the floor like black ink. “Considering the happy news I’m sure these two would appreciate as much alone time as they can steal. May I speak with you elsewhere?”

Judging by the flabbergasted look on the boy’s face he’s never had anyone of high standing request to speak with him as though he had some sort of choice in the matter. Very likely he was used to nobles demanding things from him without a single thought for the idea that he might also be human with real human feelings to consider. Tobirama, thankfully, had been blessed with a mind strong enough to think beyond the haughty lessons his parents had taught him as a child.

Rather than spill his mind right there in the hallway, he waited to make sure the boy was following and then led them to another room in Itama’s private wing where only servants and the royal family ever came. Lookbook development

Here is my development process for the narrative page in my lookbook. I started by using the same pink for the background as I have done through the entire look book along with splashes of colour, so that the lookbook reads cohesively. I then lay out a window and wood boards so that I can create definitive areas for where the images will sit.

Next I start adding the individual images of the furniture and the like. I chose to remove the background from them all so that I could lay out this page like a mock-up for a room or like a interiors catalogue. I only had the bench on the right, but felt that the image needed balance, so I found a purple one that fit the colour pallet that I then used the skew function to manipulate until it changed the perspective of the image.

I intentionally made certain objects bigger than the should be, such as the desk lamp been almost the height of the window, so it would fit the whimsical and somewhat surreal room I was building.

Lastly I opened this in inDesign and using the same font type and style I added the heading of ‘Joyful and Optomistic’ which is a description of the trend by using the pen tool to graph a line across the page and used the type in a line tool to give the header a glowing more natural look that complements the base image.

I spent a long time moving all of the pieces around, to find where they fit best. I like how this page has turned out, but perhaps I could add more text to the page for my finished lookbook and also manipulate the purple bench image slightly so it reads better.
