For those of you unfamiliar, @purimgifts is a yearly exchange of a set of three (short!) fics or podfics with a graphic treat (potentially terrible clip-art if you are so delightfully inspired) included in each one. /I usually do covers, as illustrated here 😅 The goal of the exchange is to focus on a character who is jewish and/or a woman and/or possibly persecuted by an evil vizier... with some leeway as to your personal definition of 'vizier' allowed. (Valentine totally qualifies as a Vizier, plus there's Simon & Maia & Clary & Izzy & Catarina &etc. for my Shadowhunters friends if they'd like to join us next year?!? :D) It is a joy and a delight of an exchange, 12/10, highly recommended, (even the discord is a lovely supportive place) and this year's collection has Been Revealed, so look! I wrote things! This year I wrote for Becky Chambers' Wayfarers Series (specifically the first two books because I have A Lot of Sidra Feels) largely because I feel we all deserve a little more cozy found family in our sci-fi and our lives.

It's isolating, being a kit instead of a ship, being alone in her "head" instead of Linking to whatever she needs to know next. It's frustrating, knowing no one else understands, and that she can't risk trying for something else, for more. Until she realizes she already has it.

On memories and guilt, relief and success. To the ghosts of the past, and the hope for the future. Pepper takes a moment to realize they made it.

I've been hearing about solarpunk a lot lately and I wanted to share one of my favorite books that I am almost confident is solarpunk, or at least is relatively similar. It also explores a lot about human purpose and what that is meant to look like. Without spoiling, It's about a nonbinary monk (and a robot) in a post-apocalyptic world that's reinveted itself to vibe and thrive with the planet earth. The author who wrote it also wrote the long way to a small angry planet (another one of my favorite books) and it's called a psalm for the wild-built.

I would never have dreamed of an illustrated version and this is luxurious!

I'm somewhat tempted to write a story set in the universe of A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet just because the worldbuilding is so good.

Oh yeah, like - I mean, I'm still far more annoyed than I should be by the fact that Aeluon demography makes zero sense, but otherwise? First really fun new space opera setting I've seen get any commercial success since, like, Mass Effect?

Just a tragedy that the only stories set in it are the low tension slice of life breather episode stuff that you generally put between the actual plot arcs as a change of pace.

All to say, I endorse and support this idea.

I know a lot of people read Harry Potter in different languages to practice/read something familiar and fun. I’m pleased to announce three languages later that The Scholomance trilogy by Naomi Novik fills this niche nicely, for those folks who want fun (murder) magic school vibes! pros: you’ll know a lot of good vocab for mass destruction and murder, and vocab about systemic injustice

also excellent are Becky Chamber’s The Wayfarer Series, which are gentler and more space opera vs fantasy.

Pros: you’ll know a lot of good space exploration and alien description vocabulary!

cons for both series: there’s a lot of made up words in both books, so unless you have great memory (and they didn’t change the word in translation), you might spend some time being like “is this language X, or in universe?”

So, I read the first 2 books years and years ago. I vaguely remember the broad strokes, but really nothing specific. As I recall, book 2 was pretty stand alone from book 1.

I'm gearing up to read books 3 and 4 (book 4 got nominated for a Hugo)

Do I need to go back and reread the first two? Find a good synopsis to read first? OK to just jump in?
