Battle Scars (REMASTERED)
So this is one of the first Shakarian fics I ever wrote and looking back, it was... Well. It sure was... something. It wasn't good, y'all.
I've spent the better part of today on remastering it — fixing my awkward grammar choices, making some of the glaring tell-not-show moments a bit more subtle, and overall making this fic more... readable. Remaster!
Word count: 5,337 (remastered from 4,800!)
Fandom: Mass Effect
Relationship(s): Shakarian
Summary: Perhaps Shepard isn't very smart to go into a scar comparing contest with the guy who almost had his head blown off by a missile, but then again who ever said she's supposed to make smart decisions? Plenty of her scars say otherwise.
TRIGGER WARNINGS: this fic discusses (though doesn't depict) dissociation, self-harm, body dysmorphia, and suicide.
Excerpt:
"Well..." Garrus hoped he wasn't crossing any lines right now, but this was the point of this whole contest. "There is one scar you have that I've always meant to ask about."
"And which one is that?"
Instead of answering, he gently trailed his fingers over the long scar on her face. The lighter, thick scar tissue was a bit raised in comparison to the rest of her skin. This must have been a deep cut.
She shivered a bit under his touch.
"Claw or tooth?" he asked softly. The origin of this type of injury was almost always an encounter with some sort of predator, but he couldn't guess the specifics.
"Claw," Shepard answered quietly. She wasn't looking at him, almost deliberately so.
"Varren or husk or—"
"Turian."
Garrus stopped for a second — a moment's hesitation as he wondered if he could be touching her, if it was alright.
You know the drill — full thing is on AO3 <3

Even though I am a bigger fan of dragon age, I have played all the Mass Effect games too. Well the original trilogy anyway; apparently the remaster had a different ending?
Which is just as well cause I don't remember much from my play through. I only did it once and it was back-to-back so its kinda a blur?
So yeah I might also play Mass Effect again as well

howling at udina's hysterically low texel and clearly mirrored outfit. not a pixel to spare for the poor ambassador because we spent them on lovingly rendering all 50 of commander shepard's guns at once

me playing mass effect 1: tee hee hee gonna pair up tali and garrus in my squad a lot so when they get together in the third game i’m directly responsible. c’mon guys let’s take an elevator.
garrus: i hope your people are sorry for unleashing the geth tali!
tali: oh yeah?? i hope your people are sorry for unleashing the genophage on the krogan!
me: okay yeah it’s a slow burn
me playing mass effect 2: i’m distraught over my boyfriend acting like it’s my fault i was dead for two years and brought back by terrorists and have no choice but to work with them bc at this point why the fuck should i believe miranda about not putting a control chip in me or an explosive capsule next to my brain or at the very least implanting a tracker in me. so yeah i’m dragging the only two squad members i trust 100% at this time with me to the citadel when i go to bother my space dad anderson about kaidan being on horizon. c’mon guys we gotta wander around the shopping area until i find the rapid transit point.
garrus: do you ever miss our elevator talks?
tali: no
garrus: tell us about your immune system again!
tali: i have a shotgun
me: okay so they have a SLOW slow burn

I'll be heading to Ilos when I get home from work tonight, so I suppose it's time for my overall thoughts on Mass Effect 1 in the Legendary Edition. Only three years after it was first released!
Despite the fact that it's taken me nearly a year to finish this one game, overall I'll give it a thumbs-up in the translation from the original. The story has remained intact unchanged, and most of the upscaled effects work nicely.
There are a few wonky effects changes, which I assume are unintended. The coloring on some of the human character models is odd, and for a few it looks like they're wearing blue/purple lipstick due to the high contrast (Particularly Udina, who frankly cannot pull it off). But thankfully that doesn't effect the crew on the Normandy, who you obviously see more throughout the game.
The updated gameplay style in combat takes some getting used to, but once you do it's easy to work with. If you're completely new to ME and never payed the original you'll have no problem getting used to it. My only complaint here is some of the new weapons they introduced and the poor information presentation to the user: In the original release all weapons of the same type worked the same, but now they've got semi-auto/burst ARs, and single-shot pistols, etc. and this info isn't presented well in the descriptions. So until you actually equip and test them all you have no idea if this new item is going to behave like that one. They're clearly trying to align with the weapons from ME2 and ME3, which I understand, but they should have updated the interface here to explain it.
I like the introduction of a booster to the Mako. It's not revolutionary, but sometimes it's nice to jump off a mountain and rocket straight down.
They weren't lying when they said that level progression would go faster than the original, I think I'm on lvl55 (56?) on this first playthrough. I'm not sure if I'll make it to 60 before the end of the game, but I might. It will definitely be closer than I ever did on a single playthrough before. I've also already gotten the majority of the Achievements, including all Companion achievements and even most Tech/Biotic Achievements. You don't have to replay the game a dozen times to fulfill all the requirements.
My plan is always to use at least two playthroughs on any new character to take advantage of Charm/Intimidate bonuses in addition to maxing out at lvl60, so I'll still be doubling up anyway.
All told, this is pretty much exactly what they promised: A remastered re-release version of the same game, not a remake despite he gameplay changes they did introduce. If you've never played Mass Effect and want to get into the series this could be a good way to start out instead of purchasing the original version.
Once I finish this playthrough I am going to be restarting with a brand new character, which I will plan to import into ME2 and ME3 for the whole series.
