i LOVE rootbeer. I had some today and it was so good and satisfying. Such a beautiful, sonderful beverage. Its cold, its fizzy, its sweet, it tastes vaguely like a root to some tree and smells like pure happiness. I love rootbeer. Saw someone on instagram make a rootbeer float with dippin dots, it was beautiful. And now im craving rootbeer floats. Theres a really fun and easy (and cheap) way to get the same vibe as a rootbeer float where you use vanilla or sweet cream coffee creamer. My mom used to pack me lunches with mini cans of rootbeer and those free creamers you can pick up from the gas station when you get coffee, they were my favorite thing to have. I also like plain rootbeer that's ice cold. Room temp soda is always a no-go for me, so iced soda is so normal that it never really feels refreshing or special, but rootbeer is an exception ♡ i also love ginger ale and sprite but im feeling rootbeer today. Take a shot of rootbeer every time you read the word rootbeer in this post. Love ♡♡♡

Rootbeer is more than just a fizzy soft drink—it’s a beloved American classic with deep cultural roots and a fascinating history. Originally brewed from the sassafras tree, Rootbeer has evolved over the centuries from a medicinal tonic into the sweet, bubbly refreshment we know today. With its unique blend of flavors, Rootbeer continues to capture the hearts of generations, making it a staple at barbecues, soda fountains, and diners across the United States.
In this blog, we'll explore the rich history of Rootbeer, its evolving recipe, and the reasons behind its timeless appeal. Whether you enjoy it as a stand-alone drink, paired with a meal, or as the base for a nostalgic Rootbeer float, this beverage holds a special place in American culture.
The Origins of Rootbeer
The origins of Rootbeer date back to indigenous cultures, where various roots, including sassafras and sarsaparilla, were brewed to create medicinal drinks. Early American colonists adapted these recipes, experimenting with local plants to create their own versions of Rootbeer, which were often consumed for their supposed health benefits.
In the 19th century, pharmacists began selling Rootbeer as a health tonic, believing it could cure various ailments. However, it wasn’t until the late 1800s that Rootbeer took on its modern, carbonated form when Charles Hires, a Philadelphia pharmacist, introduced it as a commercially available soft drink.
The Flavor of Rootbeer
The distinct flavor of Rootbeer comes from a blend of unique ingredients. Traditionally made with sassafras root, the drink also includes spices such as vanilla, licorice, anise, and wintergreen. These ingredients combine to create a bold yet smooth taste that’s often described as sweet, spicy, and slightly creamy.
While the original sassafras root has been banned by the FDA due to health concerns, modern Rootbeer recipes use safrole-free sassafras extract or other natural flavors to replicate the signature taste.
Rootbeer in Pop Culture
Over time, Rootbeer has become a symbol of American nostalgia, often associated with family gatherings, road trips, and summer cookouts. Its most famous culinary partner, the Rootbeer float, was invented in 1893, combining the frothy sweetness of Rootbeer with creamy vanilla ice cream. This iconic treat remains a favorite today, evoking memories of soda shops and simpler times.
Whether you’re a fan of craft brews, classic brands, or creating your own Rootbeer at home, this beverage continues to be a refreshing reminder of America’s rich culinary history.

we have ice tea and have had it for years (its considered more of a european thing since it came in with the french) and half our culture is based on sugary drinks
some examples:
Tumblr media
dandelion & burdock (our rootbeer)
Tumblr media
iron brew, the greatest drink to come out of scotland since scotch (and yes, scotland is apart of britain as its a nation within the british iles. england is not the only nation on this island).
Tumblr media
vimto, a fizzy drink so iconic to british tradition that people can and should side eye you for not trying it. it is also made with a currant that was illegal to grow in many places across america up until 2003.
oh. also. small thing.
THE BRITS FUCKING MADE THE MODERN SODA YOU MYOPIC YANK SHITS
Tumblr media
Classic me turning a discussion about soft drinks into an example of the mind boggling idiocy of American chauvinism and American centrism but I guess here we are.
This post isn't to say that England, Scotland and Wales are the greatest nation on Earth and England was completely correct in all the genocides they did (which yanks have baseleslly accused me of saying in the past when I did the oh-so vile act of not worshipping their nation's omnipresent culture) but it is instead to say that Americans are ao ahut off from the rest of the world and are taught from birth that what they have in their nation is special to just them and every other nation is either a disgusting copycat or just doesn't have the pleasures of American life in any way shape or form.
To the Americans reading this ready to pretend to claim I'm oppressive against them despite the fact I live thousands of miles away and hold less power than an iPhone, I want to say one thing.
You are not special. The only thing that makes your country special isn't all the small pleasures. It's the horrors witnessed in your daily lives. No free health care, shootings being a weekly occurance, police officers not knowing what the constitution actually says, politicians that demand stuff only serial killers would desire and a strangle hold on the rest of the world's economy and culture.
You're only special in the sense that a cancerous tumour is special and I hope your nation burns.
Anyways, do try Iron Brew when you have the chance.

i'm gonna go and fiddle with the flavor of the rest of the root beer i have in the fridge and then bottle it up! as it is, it's really sweet and spice-heavy, with a lot of sassafras, vanilla & molasses up front and then the clove and anise kinda hang on the end. i think i want to bring out a bit more brightness in the taste, add a little more wintergreen and nutmeg!
i'll take good notes so i can post the recipe when i'm done :)
