Spoilers for Criminal Minds Season 14
ya know... a lot of the way season 14 is shot and filmed and written sort of gives a sneak peak on what Spencer and JJ's marriage and life together could have been like - had they actually had the balls to go through with that storyline.
Spencer daydreaming about Henry's birth while held captive. JJ telling Spencer about her mom and JJ seemingly being Spencer's first call post-solving the case & her asking him about imagines futures.
Like, the way Season 14 is written, specifically with scenes between JJ and Spencer, you can almost see how their lives would've been had they dated in the early seasons, had kids and gotten married.
Almost like a "What If JJ didn't invite Garcia to that game" sort of thing.
I don't particularly like the whole "JJ has been secretly in love with Spencer this whole time" thing nor do I like the "Spencer has secretly held onto his love for JJ this whole time" thing for a multitude of reasons, but they really were trying to show us in Season 14 what that could've looked like - whether intentionally or not. Whether it was a set up for "the big reveal" at the end of the season or not.
Like yes, I do think JJ and Spencer could've been a really cute couple, but having her admit to being in love with Spencer after 10+ years of being with Will plus having two kids with Will. AND having Spencer seemingly say he can't imagine a life without being in love with JJ after he fell in love with, and lost, Maeve (and been with many other women, mans had everyone's eye) - Doesn't sit right. It cheapens the Maeve storyline and undermines JJ's seemingly very strong, very wonderful marriage with Will.
It would've been really easy for a JJ x Spencer storyline from the episode she was introduced onward, but they chose not to do it. So it just feels like a really wierd cop out - which makes me ask, did they have a new writer for season 14? maybe someone who shipped JJ and Spencer and was sad it never happened, so this was to make themselves feel better while not completely retconning and ruining JJ's marriage for the sake of JJ and Spencer being together.
But, rewatching Season 14. I can absolutely picture how JJ and Spencer's marriage could have looked. I just hate that they did it now after everything the two of them have been through.
