if it was not clear already rdr2 is a fantastic game and there is really very little i would ever want to change about it if anything. the main story is well structured, well paced, and overall well-balanced. the cast of characters and their diversity both literally but also in view point and struggle was so wonderful. it satirizes the american west and the romantiscization of outlaws and early american life/the american dream highlighting the death and destruction and disease of the culture and colonization. arthur is an amazing character all in all. i simply cannot over exaggerate this. his relationship to dutch in my opinion more closely resembles one of a narcissistic mother and an oldest daughter - in that dutchs consistent victimization does not allow arthur to leave him even at the end of his life. arthur is doomed by the narrative and yet the world around him opens up a path and that path is impacted by his choices. arthur is a good man. the game affirms it so many times and so often and yet even at the end he wonders if he was. but that is part of what makes him so memorable. his immense humility as he continues to be better was truly unlike anything else. arthurs final vision of the sunrise and the choice to play unshaken as he lays to rest was absolutely crushing. it is a good theme song, very haunting. the world is changing around arthur and he struggles to find that place but had he had the time - he would've been fine. he is of good enough standing that he wouldve been just fine and i think that is the most painful. i think it was apt that arthur died with no one with him. on the surface it seems cruel, but i think it is so perfectly representative of the fact arthur achieved redemption by his own effort alone. that it was his morals and decency that took him to that place, as lonely and sad as it was. in another life the narrative didnt doom him. but i think his death and the meaning in that death was fulfilled. i didnt feel betrayed by that choice. it was a good game. he was a good man !!!

arthur morgan is so eldest daughter coded GOD
#aristotle.txt#i think dutch and arthur mirror the relationship between a mother and daughter in many aspects#dutchs victimization of himself and his continuous denial and the anger he experiences and emotional guilting#the MINUTE arthur gains autonomy enough to betray his wants is just so peak mother and oldest daughter#the way arthur is HELL BENT on saving dutch is so representative of that#john has a much easier time questioning dutch and it is wholly because john is younger. he is the younger child#he has arthurs protection and he BELIEVES in that. so fully. in the way he carries himself#arthur lingers in johns life and his choices. john has the autonomy and freedom of a second child#ON TOP OF THIS. i think dutch loves both john and arthur. i dont think that is untrue#dutch is pathetic and he experiences major decline in sanity#the impact of arthurs death.... the abysmal reality that it was by dutchs hand that he died... dutchs sin is pride#he is hysterical in his attempt to prove what i can only assume is his worth as a father figure#he is so deep in denial and truly has lost his mind. that many has so much wrong with him#but he is well written and nuanced and so often feels motherly in his platitudes and preaching#a prideful mother and a daughter hellbent on making sure she is never lonely ohhhh theyre so#aough this game. this game is cooking me.#also the lengths that arthur goes to keep all of his tenderness wrapped in the pages of his journal and safe from everyone.....oh we're#really in it now arthur morgan#a.rdr2

RAHHGHGHGH . so glad i can finally be fucking insane in the membrane abt dutch without spoilering . i know hes not ur guy from this one but hes such a fucking beast to me i need to put him in the salad spinner and watch him go .
his like subtle manipulation of everyone , particularly arthur, john and molly. oh my god i could talk for england abt molly oshea. dutch's romantic relationships are like a microcosm of how his manipulation and favour with arthur / john plays out over the course of the game . he was originally with susan grimshaw ( rip to the goat ) , then it's heavily implied he did her extremely dirty and ditched her for molly, a aristrocratic but crucially younger and less experienced woman who better embodied his big , grand ideas ( oh motif of dutch surrounding himself by rich lovely things. like his clothes . ostensibly pretty extravagant for an outlaw but when you get closer you see how ripped and frayed they are , representing him clinging onto a lost way of life ). THEN at several points in the game if you explore camp , you can see dutch flirting with karen multiple times !!! karen who is like NINETEEN i think ??
hes such a fucking scumbag . he does not get attached to people in the normal way . he views them as extensions of his pretentious beliefs . he preys on young, vulnerable people with nothing to lose, offering them a home , a family , only to use it against them when they start waking up to the reality. and it hurts so much watching arthur come to this realisation because he loves dutch so goddamn much , he sticks around for wayyyy longer than he should've because he's loyal down to his fucking core .
sidenote sorry for being insane . dutch has my fav speech in the whole game which is his one to milton ... 'ain't no such thing as civilised. it's man so in love with greed, he has forgotten himself and found only appetites ' ohhh dutch ur so silly dont u want to introspect a little . arent u tired of projecting . dont u just wnana go apeshit.
i know a lot about dutchs story through osmosis from beloved lamb and you are SO right that his relationships with women (particular his trading in of women for younger models whenever he so feels like it) is a microcosm of how he manipulates people in the game !!! it always baffles me when i remember that dutch was with grimshaw once upon a time and it feels . so apt to think that it would later be grimshaw to kill her, especially in the midst of the crisis of the gang falling apart.
i LOVEEE the motif of dutchs obsession with luxury - unaffordable luxury. its such a great way to subtly represent his greed that will eventually kill him. not only is it present in his appearance, but its really the most impactful when held up with how hosea dresses himself. hosea is such an important anchor to the gang, and an important part of leveling dutch overall. i really like that element and that hosea dresses primarily in blue while dutch does in red... i love the way the honor system uses color because once you see it you cannot Unsee it and it makes me insane
and i think that obsession with the finer things and also his consistent preying on the young and vulnerable and how he groomed arthur and john into violece is once again.... sooo representative of the fact that dutchs main sin is a deep pride and a sense of arrogance. he DOES believe that all people in the gang are some extension of his bullshit philosphy and he views his love (which i do believe he views as genuine love) as holy and righteous...dutch believes himself to know best. better than anyone, for everything. whether that be in clothes or how to live and act. his prestige is so ... fake... he is SO fake. he has constructed an entire life upon a falsity and false understanding and he's sold it time and time again to recruit members. and he does it so well that it drives the gang to obsess over loyalty and dutchs word as law.
the only thing that was tempering that for so long was hosea. hosea was the voice of reason. hosea was the counter. and when hosea inevitably dies - dutch completely slips and sinks further and further into his unethical tirade. but dutch still has some humanity in him, and everything snaps back to reality when arthur dies in front of him and it is all dutch's fault in some capacity. its the one time in the game where dutch is forced to reflect inward, because he did love arthur. he did. i know he did. and that is precisely why he leaves arthur there alone - because he is then forced to face every single reality all at once when arthur dies like that. and it is so .so .

i'm bombarding you with asks i'm so sorry but i have FEELINGS about this game—
i was so adamant about you helping the church folks in Saint Denis because the scene with Arthur and the sister would NEVER have happened if you didn't do the side quest! 😭 instead you get a small scene with Swanson which isn't nearly as impactful imo. literally the way he LOOKS and SOUNDS when he finally says out loud, "i'm afraid" fucking KILLS ME EVERY TIME.
he's so TIRED and EXHAUSTED and he knows Dutch is going to be his death but he loves Dutch and the gang and STILL tries to save him because he has nothing else and doesn't see his own skin as worth saving. but you know who he sees worth it?
John.
the same John he was (rightfully) giving grief to for abandoning the family that Arthur WISHES he still had. the same John who he would needle and bicker with, but in hindsight it resembles the needling from an older brother trying to keep the younger in check. and because he is who he is, it's so vividly clear that Arthur, despite everything, still loved John and still cared about him and his family SO much.
hell, Arthur loved everyone else in that gang more than himself. except for fucking Micah. but because he's so loyal to Dutch he would never do what he wants to do to Micah and played nice with him longer than he ever fucking deserved.
i just. i'm sick. i'm sick in the head. he gave EVERYTHING for the gang and tried to get those he loved safe, no matter what.
i love how you say that Arthur is too good for you. he'd never, ever believe you.
IM REALLY GLAD I DID THE QUESTS!! and i really enjoy how these little inconsequential meetings and quests impact arthurs journey as a character. like the sisters quest was simple and nothing too dire at all - but it has such a big impact on arthurs life. him saying in his journal that that conversation unburdened him after everything made me sooooo fucking weepy.
seeing arthur get more perpetually sick and seeing the cloud of death hang over him as the game progresses and him still doing everything he can to save dutch when he is well passed saving. dutch is an unforgiveable piece of shit and i do hatre him for what he did. it was truly truly truly so painful to see arthur continue to give to dutch. partially because he loved him and partially because he wasn't sure what else there is
i had a very long conversation about this w lamb but i really. i really love the relationship there is between john and arthur. i really love that they have a genuine sense of brotherhood between them and that the corruption in the van der linde gang stems so much from this corruption of the family structure. arthur sees john as his brother. like in a serious sense.
both the way he reprimands john and the way he looks out for him. the way he's willing to sacrifice everything and believes that his life will have at least meant something if john makes it out. i think arthur projects a lot onto john in a way that is only experience with older brothers. his hopes and wants and dreams. even his grief. he passes those things onto john and john, like younger brothers often do - take them on. he absorbs so many of arthurs mannerisms and tries hard to make good on what arthur wanted of him.
it was . so painful for me to hear that john heard arthurs voice in his head after everything. arthur loved that gang to pieces even when it didnt do him the courtesy of returning that love in the sligtest. oughhsdjs
YURI YOU SAYING THAT IS MAKING ME SO SICK. he is TOO good for me like so genuinely i dont think i could date a man so decent but you're right that he would never believe it and that makes me sick. arthur morgan you foolish and silly man
