Replacement (Enoch O'Connor x M! Reader)
I wanted to add something to the relatively small pool of fics for this fandom. All characters are of age and can be envisioned as their book or movie counterparts.
Summary: As a healer, you naturally seek to care for those around you. So it was easy to befriend Jake when he first entered Miss Peregrine's loop, confused and hurt by his grandfather's passing. However, your best friend doesn't see it that way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was official. Enoch hated Jake. Not that the other children noticed, or if they did, they were smart enough to not mention it. Maybe it was jealousy. Perhaps he was bothered by how Emma's eyes sparkled with interest whenever the American boy was around. Or maybe, it was the disruption to their routine, as Jake's presence always seemed to stir the loop like a stone tossed into a still pond.
But Olive knew the truth, for she had quickly discerned Enoch's emotions behind the venomous words he threw at Jake whenever he came near. It wasn't about Emma or their routine being disrupted. It was all because of you.
From the moment Jake first stumbled into their world, he latched onto you—an oddball healer with a gentle touch and ability to mend the deepest cuts, both physical and emotional. So when Jake arrived, it was natural for you to be his guide, explaining things in a way that made the strange world of peculiars feel less threatening.
Naturally, Enoch hated it.
Before Jake arrived, you’d spend every minute by his side—looking over his shoulder, letting out a bright smile whenever his creations came alive. Enoch secretly treasured these moments, feeling comfortable in your presence and falling for you more each day. But now? Now it was Jake this and Jake that.
No space was safe from Jake's influence, nor did the American make it easy to escape his presence. It seemed like whenever Enoch and you were together, he appeared from thin air, begging you to help him with something. It was as if the American knew of Enoch's feelings and acted to rile him up, whisking the attention of the only person he actually liked. It's not as if there weren't any other children who would be happy to spend time with the American, why did he seek you out specifically?
Every time he saw you two together, a storm brewed inside him, and a tight knot formed in his chest. Enoch wasn’t stupid. He understood what jealousy was, but this wasn’t just jealousy. This was fear. Fear that you were slipping away from him. Fear that Jake was replacing him.
One day, it all became too much.
Enoch was sitting at the table in the library, flipping through one of his old, tattered books on embalming techniques, though his focus had long since disappeared. His mind, as usual, was on you. He had tried to pretend like nothing was wrong, but the bitter feeling gnawed at him constantly. And then, as if the universe was mocking him, you and Jake walked into the room together.
Jake was talking about something, gesturing wildly with his hands, and you were laughing—a bright, carefree laugh that Enoch hadn’t heard in days.
That was the last straw.
"Seriously?" Enoch snapped, slamming his book shut, startling you both. Jake stopped mid-sentence, blinking in confusion, but Enoch didn’t care. His gaze was fixed on you, his voice sharp and biting. “Do you really have to follow him around all the time?”
Your smile faltered, a confused frown replacing it as you looked at him. “What are you talking about?”
“You know exactly what I’m talking about.” Enoch’s voice grew colder, harsher. His jealousy had festered too long, and now it spilled like poison. “Ever since he got here, it’s like you’ve forgotten everyone else exists.”
Jake shifted awkwardly beside you, clearly unsure of what to say, but Enoch didn’t give him a chance. “You’re spending so much time with him, acting like he needs you for everything. It's pathetic."
Your eyes narrowed, a flash of anger crossing your face. “He’s new here, Enoch! He does need help adjusting. And I’m not just going to ignore him because you—”
“Because I what?” Enoch cut you off, his eyes blazing. “Because I’m not needy enough for you? Because I don't fawn over you like a mutt every second like he does?””
Your mouth opened slightly, stunned by his words. Enoch could see the hurt forming in your eyes, but he was too wound up to stop now.
“Face it,” Enoch continued, his voice colder now, “you just want to feel like you matter to someone, right? Like you have some purpose. Well, here’s the truth—you’re not needed here. Jake can deal just fine on his own and I don’t need a dessolent friend.”
Your face twisted in hurt, and that twisted something deep inside Enoch. You stared at him, your hands trembling slightly at your sides. “You’re wrong,” you finally said, voice breaking. “But I guess I was wrong too, thinking you were my best friend.”
Before Enoch could respond, you turned and stormed out of the room, leaving him and Jake alone. The American looked like he was about to say something, but Enoch shot him a cold glare, daring him to speak.
Days passed. Days where Enoch didn’t see you, didn’t hear from you, and the space you used to fill in his life became an empty void he couldn’t bear to acknowledge. You weren't just avoiding him, you had begun to spend even more time with Jake, much to Enoch's dismay.
He tried to act like it didn’t bother him. He pretended he didn’t care when he saw you laughing as if his absence meant nothing to you. But it did. It hurt more than Enoch was willing to admit. It was only when Olive pushed him to accept his mistake that led him to stand at your door, long after the other house's inhabitants had gone to bed.
Enoch stood there for a long moment, his hand raised to knock, but his usual stubbornness kept holding him back. What if you didn’t forgive him? What if you’d already moved on and replaced him for good?
Taking a deep breath, Enoch knocked.
After a few agonizing moments, the door creaked open, and you stood there, blinking groggily at him in the dim light. You looked surprised to see him, and Enoch couldn’t blame you.
“What do you want, Enoch?” you asked, your voice flat, distant.
“I…” Enoch faltered for a moment, struggling to find the right words. His usual snark and bravado were gone, replaced with something more vulnerable, more uncertain. “I came to…apologize.”
You crossed your arms, leaning against the doorframe, clearly not ready to let him off the hook so easily. “For what?”
“For what I said,” Enoch muttered, not meeting your eyes. “For being a complete prat.”
Your expression softened, but you didn’t say anything, waiting for him to continue. Enoch sighed, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly. “Look, I didn’t mean it. Any of it,” he admitted, his voice quieter now. “I was just…jealous. Of Jake. Of the time you’ve been spending with him.”
You raised an eyebrow, clearly surprised. “Jealous? Why?”
Enoch hesitated, his heart pounding in his chest. This was it. He could either admit the truth or lose you for good. Taking a deep breath, he finally met your gaze. “Because I like you,” he confessed in a whisper. “I’ve liked you for a long time, and seeing you with him made me feel like I was losing you. Like I wasn’t needed anymore. Like I was being replaced.”
The weight of his confession hung in the air, and Enoch braced himself for your response. He had no idea how you would react, but he had to say it. He couldn’t keep pretending like it didn’t matter anymore. You stood there for a long moment, staring at him, processing everything. Then, slowly, you stepped aside, opening the door wider.
“Come inside, Enoch,” you said quietly. “Let’s talk.”
And for the first time in days, Enoch felt a small glimmer of hope. Maybe, just maybe, things could be fixed after all.

In your opinion, who is the most traumatized character in mphfpc?
I can't decide 😅 everyone is so traumatized in this story. I'm going to put here the ones that I consider most traumatized.
Jacob: saw his grandfather's traumatic death, killed people (even though wights are evil, they are still people), saw and killed hollowgasts, has been beaten and almost devoured several times, has been sentenced to death. He's seen a lot of friends killed in front of him, he's become a hollow... This boy urgently needs a psychologist.
Miss P: this woman has been traumatized since she was born, her brothers made her life hell, she saw her children die/or grow old and go crazy. She was disturbed in her dreams, she suffered a lot, if you search my profile you will find a list of about 20 different traumas that @evil-feather and I have put together and you will understand why she is so traumatized.
Horace: He knows all the misfortunes that will happen to the people he loves, in advance. This poor guy suffers before things get really bad. This kid's anxiety must be horrible.
Emma: This girl is full of traumas of heartbreak and abandonment problems. Her parents were horrible people, she spent the rest of her life without hearing from her sister. Poor Emma.
Abe: I'm not a fan of his, but this guy is definitely more traumatized than Jacob. He was a victim of the horrors of Nazism... He lost his biological family, he lost a part of his soul to a swindler, He abandoned everyone who ever loved him, he was unable to be a present father, and he probably died feeling guilty for not having prepared Jacob to survive in the peculiar world.
There are probably more traumatized characters, but these are the first ones that come to mind.

Love when my headcanons become canon (or sort of)
Always thought that Caul has a “peculiar radar” too (if I remember correctly ymbrynes have that. Makes it easier for them to find peculiars). So that his powers are just a teeny tiny bit more similar to that of an ymbryne. Just a bit. Not too much though. Just like I think Myron can freeze time just a smidge
Also like to think that it wasn’t an ymbryne (very likely V) who assured Abe Jacob is peculiar, but Caul, who paid him a visit and unfortunately for Abe, got to take a look at little Jacob, confirming that “awe he is just like you :) ❤️”
Snippet is from Window-shopping at Bedlam, Miss Peregrine‘s Museum of Wonders

How do I Say Goodbye by Dean Lewis gives me strong Abe, Jacob, & Emma vibes 😭
🎶 So how do I say goodbye
To someone who's been with me for my whole damn life?
You gave me my name and the color of your eyes
I see your face when I look at mine
So how do I, how do I, how do I say goodbye?
When I couldn't, you always saw the best in me
Right or wrong, you were always on my side
But I'm scared of what life without you's like
And I saw the way she looked into your eyes
And I promise if you go, I will make sure she's alright 🎶

Ok but does the abuse become the abuser trope kinda fit Abe , frank , Jacob
Since Abe wasn’t abuse but he was traumatized by the war since his whole family died by the monsters and he also moved a lot then met miss peregrine
Then after a few years he met his wife and had kids with her then after that he became the abuser since he was a neglectful dad and probably a husband to Frank & Susan mom and probably made her a single mother for the most of their childhoods
And this is just a thought that he also didn’t know how to be a dad at all
And now frank met Maryann and had Jacob and then he didn’t become the abuser but only after his dad died and that impacted Jacob for a few weeks to months
So after that then he probably became the abuser to Jacob since he called him crazy and also dented him to some hospital or somewhere and also had 2 people help them to sent him away(I can’t remember)
Mans this is just an opinion that maybe Jacob going to miss peregrines is just like a person going to the internet and being more happy their then with their own family’s

I Love Trans Enoch O'Connor
Since trans Enoch is literally one of my favorite hcs I would like to share a few things about it, buckle up, cause this might be a long one.
To start off, we know from the first book that Enoch stayed in another loop before he was transferred to Miss P's loop. We also know that to switch loops you have to put in a request with the ymbryne council. (Miss Peregrine's Museum of Wonders) Therefore, I think that Enoch originally transitioned while he was under the care of that first ymbryne, but was mistreated by the other wards for it, so he put in a request to be moved to where no one would know that he was trans. This could be the reason that Enoch takes a while to warm up to people.
Another thing that I think is really interesting is Enoch's relationship with Abe. It is clear from many mentions of him that Abe played many a prank on Enoch. Which he clearly did not like. It is also clear however, that Enoch loved and respected him (from his goodbye to him in AMOD). His love-hate relationship with Abe is also clear when it comes to how he treats Jacob. He clearly does not like Jacob at first, he makes this abundantly clear. Enoch doesn't hold Abe to the same hero status that the other children do, and he holds Jacob to an even lower standard.
A quote from HC to corroborate my point:
"'Half of those stories [about Abe]are just tall tales, and they get taller with every year that passes,' said Enoch. 'The Abraham Portman I knew never did a single thing to help us.'[...]'Anyway, that's all beside the point,' he said. 'Whatever you thought of Abe, this boy isn't him.'"
I think that this love-hate relationship with Abe is from jealousy. Enoch was definitely jealous that Abe was able to leave to fight in the war, while he had to stay in the loop. (both because of Abe being less loop-bound as well as Enoch being trans, therefore not able to enlist) I also think that Abe was jealous of Abe as a boy, as in Abe always had an easy time as a boy. He was handsome, strong, all around a very masculine dude. I definitely think that it would make Enoch jealous that he could just be a boy so easily if that makes sense. So when this other guy comes around who looks just like him, he instantly doesn't like him because of that. I think that this just makes Enoch's relationship arc with Jacob all the more important and interesting because Enoch had to look past all of his feelings about Abe to see Jacob as his own person. He does show some signs of jealousy to Jacob later, in response to his fame after the battle of Devil's Acre, but I think this is understandable. He still gets jealous, you can't control that, but he definitely grew a lot from book one.
Expanding on the point of him being jealous of Abe for his ease at masculinity. I think that this could also be the cause of Enoch's brazen attitude and general nonchalance about everything. He does his best to make sure everyone knows he's not scared easily when everyone else is. It takes a whole lot for him to admit that he's scared at all. Him wanting to be perceived as more masculine would make more tender moments rarer for him I think.
I might expand on this later but that's all I wanted to say for now. Sorry if it's a bit incomprehensible, I wrote this very fast and I'm also just generally bad at explaining my feelings about things lmao. I love him and how complicated he is. Do keep in mind that I am not trans, so I could have gotten things wrong and feel free to correct me if I did.
Thank you for coming to my ted talk

Unexpected Guest
Alma Lefay Peregrine x OC!Jaime Walsh
Summary: Jake scared the children at the bombed house, he gets dealt with and reveals terrible news.
Notes and warnings: it’s my first time writing with an OC, go easy on me lol. Hurt/comfort. SEND REQUESTS FOR MY BABY ALMA OR ELSE
Tumblr media
Alma sat at the breakfast table, waiting for Jaime to finally show up. It’s become a habit of them, waiting for the other to arrive before eating, though the children were already halfway done with their food.
Jaime rushed down the stairs, knowing how Alma always fusses about time management. “Morning, children!” she chanted, her black trousers and satin white shirt hugging her frame perfectly. “Good morning, Jaime!” they chanted back.
Alma offered a soft smile as her wife kissed her cheek. “hello, love”.
They heard the door shut and the panting of Emma, Olive and Millard, like they’ve been running from someone. “If it’s the police again, Millard you better deal with it yourself or so help me bird!” Jaime warned as she sat next to Alma, facing the empty seat of Millard, and beginning to eat.
“no..it’s..it’s not the police” Emma said, catching her breath, “It’s a boy..he..I found him in the old house and thought it was Abe but then he turned and..it was not him. He kept following me before I managed to get away” Alma had a weird look on her face, and god does Jaime hate it when she hides things from her.
“Where’d you leave him?” She asked the three children standing in front of her as though they were being interrogated. “Just outside the loop entrance” She stood up from the table, hearing her wife’s warnings echo behind her.
“Think twice before doing anything!” She grabbed a knife and a pistol, pocketing them before giving Emma a rope to hold.
“Damn it, it’s thundering!” Enoch groaned. Jaime’s peculiarity was weather manipulation, and the weather changes based on her mood. So whenever Jaime was grumpy, they couldn’t go outside or they’ll get struck by lightning. “language!” Alma scolded before Jaime opened the front door, taking a deep breath so she can calm down and stop the thunder.
“oh, Jaime what if it’s a wight?” Emma gulped behind the older woman. “Why’d you think I brought a gun?”.
They kept walking, looking around just in case the boy got in the loop and Jaime kept her hand in her pocket around the gun as we walked and Emma gulped. “Stop fussing, we’ll either kill him or scare him off” Millard said.
As they left the loop, they saw the same boy lurking around the loop entrance. “that’s him!” Emma whispered and Jaime hummed, using wind to distract him while she took out her gun, walking to him swiftly before she pulled his hair back and aimed at his temple.
“Scream and I’ll blow your brains to pieces!” she pushed him hard against a tree and he groaned, breathing faster.
Jaime turned him around to face him, gun still pointing at him confidently as she stared with a tilted head. “What are you?” she hissed.
“An-uh, I’m an american” he stammered, “I’m Jacob” Jaime came closer, pressing the gun on his forehead. “Do NOT fuck with me, asshole. What were you doing in that house? Why were you chasing my ward?”
“I just wanted to talk to her! Don’t kill me!”. She fixed him with a scowl, “about what?”
“About the house, the people who lived there” she clicked the safety, making him whimper. “Who sent you here?”
“My..my grandfather, Abraham Portman” her lips parted in surprise, looking back at Emma for a second who gasped lightly.
“Liar! You think I don’t know what you are? I wasn't born yesterday. Open your eyes!”
“These are my eyes!! I can prove it!”. Her hand relaxed a bit. “Then prove it, or I’ll water the grass with your blood”
He reached into his pocket with the gun aimed at his hand. “This letter’s part of the reason I came here. It’s from The Bird, it’s what you call your headmistress isn’t it?” She pulled the letter out of his hand and pushed him against the tree again, making him groan in pain.
“It’s you, miss peregrine and my grandpa before he want to war!” he exclaimed as Jaime stared at the picture. “You’re..you’re Jaime, aren’t you?” she rolled her eyes, holding her hand out to Emma to give her the rope and tied his hands.
“Okay, now you’re my prisoner, do as I say or you’ll regret it” Jaime pulled him by the arm and entered the loop again. As they neared the front door, Jaime sighed at his appearance and told Emma to check where Alma is.
“His shoes are caked with filth. Can’t have you tracking in mud, Bird will have an attack” she tutted and he took off his shoes, walking in the house. he gaped as he looked around the house, unable to believe it was the same house as the bombed one outside the loop.
“Miss Peregrine’s in the living room” Millard said and Jaime took him there. Alma waited a second to look up as she sewed but gasped a few seconds after she registered who he was, somehow recognizing him.
“Jaime! What on earth did you do to the poor boy!” The younger woman scoffed, not believing what she was being asked.
“Oh, please, Alma! He was following the girls! What was I supposed to think?” she pushed him further into the room and he almost tripped.
“Stop!” she warned as she stood up. “You’ll have to pardon Miss Walsh. She has a certain flair for dramatics” he nodded. “Yeah I figured” he scoffed, looking back at Jaime.
“Watch your damn tone” she growled, another thunder roaring outside and Alma turned. “Jaime, I’m warning you” she looked away, causing Alma to start introducing herself. “My name is Miss Peregrine, and as you already know, this is Jaime” she extended her hand and only when he failed to shake it did she notice the rope.
“Miss Walsh! Untie him at once! Is that how you treat a guest?!” Jaime looked baffled.
“First, I’ll pretend you did not just call me that. Second, he’s a liar and a-” she raised her hand. “Jaime..”.
She sighed, flashing her blade and going behind him to cut the rope and he shook Miss Peregrine’s hand.
Jaime was quiet until Jake brought up Abe. “He told me to come find you, to warn you about..the monsters” she scoffed, throwing her hands in the air.
“And why would he do that? Why can’t HE come and warn us himself, has he grown too old to go potty? I warned him about the outside, time and time again, I knew-” Alma yelled as she interrupted her.
“He’s dead, Jaime!” she gaped, looking at her wife with wide eyes. “He’s dead” Alma nodded, and that’s what finally shut her up for good, she gulped before walking backwards a few steps and turning to leave the room and a few seconds later, they heard the front door slammed shut. This cannot be true, no.
Alma sighed, “I’m so sorry for your loss, Jake” she offered him a sympathetic smile before looking out the window as the thunder intensified, Jaime soaked with the rain as she looked up at the sky. “That’s her...ability, isn’t it?” Jake asked, now feeling a little guilty.
Miss Peregrine nodded, sighing. “She’s quite...protective. Especially when it comes to the safety of the children. Abe hurt her more than she liked to admit when he left”.
------
The next time they saw Jaime was in the garden, helping Emma put the squirrel back in place before walking away somewhere else. Alma waited a few minutes before deciding to follow her wife inside the house, hearing sobs coming from the kitchen.
She stopped at the doorway, looking at Jaime who was hunching against the kitchen counter, sobs racking her body. She couldn’t remember the last time she heard Jaime cry like this. Mainly because the same day is repeating over and over again so the day would be predictable. Well..except when Victor died.
Alma approached her wife gently, placing a hand over the small of her back, startling her. “Love” she called, causing the short-haired woman to look at her, eyes red.
“I’m sorry for the way I laid the news on you..I-” she shook her head. “It’s..It’s fine, it was bound to happen anyway..but I can’t help but feel like shit. First Victor, and now Abe” her lips trembled before she broke down again.
Alma let a few tears escape before wiping both of their eyes, kissing her lips softly before hugging Jaime close to her. A clearing of throat startled them and they looked to see Enoch standing there sheepishly.
“The police are here again” Jaime and Alma couldn’t help but laugh, though the police came everyday for the past 70 years
“We’ll be right there”

spoilers for the first book of Mphfpc!! (And a bit of it up to library of souls)
if you don’t wanna read this/scroll a lot I wouldn’t open it, it’s a lot🫢
“all I could think was that grandfathers were supposed to die in beds, in hushed places humming with machines, not in heaps on the sodden reeking ground with ants marching over them, a letter opener clutched in one hand.
a letter opener. That was all he had to defend himself.”
Abraham Portman. All seeing hero, a soldier who took lighthearted pictures with massive bombs. absent father, amazing grandfather, dead in a robe. How ironic, how cruel.
All the life he lived to be killed by the very thing he could will like a prophet and slaughter like a marksman. Having to leave Poland and his family for dead, fighting in war to relieve the itching need for revenge plaguing him, the same itch that would be the very thing to make him leave to America in the first place. A man, one man, somehow dosing death like the pills he’d take later in his life, coming out of every battle on top, finally losing one. A man, a single man, who rose against certain death as a hobby feigned as ‘hunting trips’, just growing senile and utterly weak. It makes me wonder if Jake will fall to the same fate as him, discarding fear as a simple toy, one peculiars like him didn’t have the choice to play with.
I’ve been thinking about that since I re-read Mphfpc and really got into it for the first time. It’s been my theory (even though I’m beginning to doubt it) that he ends up dying in either a literal or metaphorical sense just like Abe did. He’s been in nearly every place Abe was. He takes his place in totality. The bed at the house when he first found it, leaving his family. in Emma’s arms, out of them. Fighting the hollows in an evolving battle. Even having the same peculiarity as Abe which if i recall correctly, is pretty rare as a peculiars ability isn’t inherited in the way just being peculiar is.
Thinking about this always tied me back into his age. He’s a sophomore in high school, barely a year older than me, and he’s been faced with all this. That’s not particularly relevant but I always forget that these books are, for the most part, about children.
And all of that only for him to follow a path he’s all too familiar with

Do you have any new headcanons? I found the ones in your pin very interesting!
Firstly: forgive me for the delay in responding, I started collecting my new headcanons and ended up forgetting to come back here to show them.
Anyway, my new headcanons:
1. Olive's tiara/crown is also made from a heavy material to help her stay on the ground and not fly away. It's extra weight to give her more comfort on the ground.
2. The council of ymbrynes never learned that Bentham accidentally created the hollowgasts. If they had known, Bentham would probably have been arrested. Even if he didn't create the hollows on purpose, he definitely planned a small genocide. This is probably considered a crime by the council.
3. Peculiar souls are not acidic, ambrosia was only acidic because the Wights wanted it, they made it that way. An addictive and corrosive liquid. It was their way of harming their peculiar "allies".
4. Caul always knew that Miss Peregrine was the successor of one of the 12 great ymbrynes who sealed Abaton and this probably made him hate her even more.
5. Nothing bad happened with the old Enoch loop, he probably just didn't suit the place and asked to change loops and ended up in Cairnholm,As grumpy as Enoch is, he likes living there, if he didn't like it he would have asked to change loops at the first opportunity.
6. Every time Abe visited Emma after the war he always went with the intention of ending everything with her, but personally he couldn't, he never had the courage to break her heart personally. Ending everything by letter was easier for him and more painful for her.
7. Claire is very young, she was probably found by Miss Peregrine when she was still very little and Ymbryne adopted her, that's why Claire is so attached to Miss P, she's the closest thing Claire has ever known to a mother.
8.Just like Olive and Noor, Claire is also a peculiar "Infant" she was born with a second mouth on the back of her head and her story must be quite sad.
9. When Victor's body was brought to the island, Enoch was the one who sewed up the entire body, he was the only one who had the courage to do this for his friend.
10. Millard has never feared being forgotten by Miss Peregrine, and probably enjoys being in her presence because she never fails to notice him. She feels his peculiarity, it's as if she sees him. Even though she doesn't really see him, she feels him, she always knows where he is, he will never be forgotten by her, she is the only one who notices his presence all the time.
11. Horace's dreams are completely meaningless, sometimes he manages to interpret and avoid the bad future, and sometimes he cannot understand what he dreamed but tries to explain and everything comes out confused and meaningless.
12. During the entire time that Fiona was missing, she was recovering from the injuries caused by her fall and the violence of the wights.
13. When Miss Peregrine saved Abe she probably didn't know what his peculiarity was, he was too young to be able to kill a hollow, he probably only discovered his gift when he was older and managed to survive an attack by hollowgasts. After all, there is no way for him to discover his power without having met Hollow in person.
14. Hugh has a whole routine organized for his bees so that their life in his stomach is as comfortable as if they lived in a normal hive.
15. There was probably a burial for Caul, and for all the current wights, after all, before they discovered what they had become, they were all presumed dead.
16. The constant transformations of ymbrynes into their respective birds harm their bone health. Their bones keep changing size and becoming hollow, their joints are also damaged, which is why they develop bone and joint problems early. Like Miss Peregrine's arthritis and how Miss Avocet became a wheelchair user.
17. Mr White and his men always knew that the children were with Caul and not Miss P. He was only so worried about knowing where the Falcon was because he knew that it was his master, and he was worried that he wasn't with the children. The wights were only chasing the children to force them to look for Miss Wren faster.
18. Wights do not have complete control or trust in hollows, and they can see the creatures, but they do not trust them enough to ride hollows like Jacob does.
19. Miss Peregrine's greatest fear is losing one of her children. She's already lost many children to tragic deaths, and she definitely doesn't want to go through that again.
20. The ymbrynes of the primordial era of the peculiars were also giants. Gigantic and very wise bird-women.

'Cinema in 2023 was full of excellent double-acts, from Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon to Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore in Todd Haynes’ May December. No doubt, the aforementioned foursome will receive a scattering of Oscar nods, but if the Academy have any sense, Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott of Andrew Haigh’s All of Us Strangers will also receive plaudits for their remarkable achievement in the haunting love story.
Adapted from Taichi Yamada’s novel Strangers, Haigh’s awards hopeful sees Scott take the role of Adam, a screenwriter trying to reconnect with memories of his deceased parents who encounter their ghosts when revisiting his old family home. Meanwhile, Mescal’s Harry searches for companionship in Adam, his only neighbour in a tower block devoid of other inhabitants.
Thanks to his role in Haigh’s film, as well as celebrated appearances in the James Bond movie Spectre and the BBC drama Fleabag, Scott has gathered a loyal following, recently sitting down with Letterboxd to discuss his favourite movies of all time.
First on his list is another movie from Haigh, 2015’s 45 Years. A modern classic that delves into themes of love, loss and regret, 45 Years tells the story of a couple soon to celebrate a major wedding anniversary who hear the news that the body of one of their former lovers has been discovered encased in ice following a historic skiing accident. Though sounding rather absurd, 45 Years is a truly phenomenal drama.
Elsewhere, Scott names the spoof movie Airplane! as another of his favourites. Popularly known as one of the best comedies of all time, Airplane! inspired similar copycat films in the late 20th century, including the Scary Movie franchise, largely thanks to its offbeat humour that refused to let up, with almost each and every line being a one-liner delivered by some of the era’s greatest actors, including the iconic Leslie Nielsen.
No list of favourite movies is complete without a classic from Steven Spielberg, with Scott praising the “first film I ever saw”, 1982’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. “It still does something to me,” the actor said of the celebrated film that tells the story of a young boy who becomes best friends with an alien who crash-lands on Earth, only for the pair to be pursued by the authorities.
The final film to grace his list is the 1993 Richard Attenborough movie Shadowlands, starring Anthony Hopkins, who gives an “extraordinary performance” according to Scott. Certainly one of Hopkins’ most underrated films, Shadowlands is a biography of C.S. Lewis, the writer of the 1950’s novel The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, whose life was changed after he met the poet Joy Gresham.
Andrew Scott’s favourite movies:
45 Years (Andrew Haigh, 2015)
Airplane! (David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, Jerry Zucker, 1980)
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (Steven Spielberg, 1982)
Shadowlands (Richard Attenborough, 1993)'

Natalie Portman and Billy Crudup in Jackie (Pablo Larraín, 2016)
Cast: Natalie Portman, Peter Sarsgaard, Greta Gerwig, Billy Crudup, John Hurt, Richard E. Grant, Caspar Phillipson, John Carroll Lynch, Beth Grant, Max Casella. Screenplay: Noah Oppenheim. Cinematography: Stéphane Fontaine. Production design: Jean Rabasse. Costume design: Madeline Fontaine. Music: Mica Levi.
I will give the benefit of the doubt to director Pablo Larraín (born in Chile in 1976) and screenwriter Noah Oppenheim (born in 1978) and assume that they didn't know what a thudding sentimental cliché ending Jackie with a reprise of the title song from Lerner and Loewe's musical Camelot would seem to those of us who actually lived through the Kennedy years and experienced the assassination and extended period of mourning that followed. Back then, you couldn't avoid Camelot allusions, even when we were fully aware of the shortcomings of JFK and the Cold War mentality, especially that of his "best and brightest" who were about to lead us into the Vietnam quagmire. Even as early as June 1964, reporter Tom Wicker was trying to evoke a less sentimental vision in his Esquire piece titled "Kennedy Without Tears." This absence of real historical context is a blemish on a well-meaning and sometimes very good film. The very good part is the heroic effort of Natalie Portman to bring together a coherent portrait of Jacqueline Kennedy, a woman undone by grief but struggling to keep a family and a legacy together. The best scenes in the film are those in which Jackie, briefly obsessed with the history of American political assassination, waffles between giving JFK a funeral that would rival Abraham Lincoln's and her fears that her husband's assassination might be part of a larger plot. She chooses a grand procession in which she, members of the administration, and foreign dignitaries would walk down Pennsylvania Avenue to the church. Then, when Lee Harvey Oswald is gunned down, she calls the procession off and rages at her brother-in-law Bobby (Peter Sarsgaard) for having kept the news of Oswald's murder from her while she and her two small children were making a vulnerable public appearance.  But then she changes her mind again, after LBJ's assistant, Jack Valenti (Max Casella), has already informed the foreign dignitaries, including the very difficult Charles De Gaulle, that there will be a motorcade instead of a walk. "I will march with Jack, alone if necessary," she tells Valenti. If the rest of Jackie were as good as these scenes, it would be a major achievement. Unfortunately, it's blurred by an unnecessary frame story in which she is interviewed by a journalist (Billy Crudup) and exercises an iron-willed control over what he will print, even as she spills the most intimate details of her experiences to him -- a way of launching flashbacks. There are too many lugubrious moments, scenes of Jackie wandering alone through the White House. There's also a rather sententious conversation with a priest (John Hurt) in which he and Jackie flirt with existentialist concepts of the meaning of life and death -- even Hurt, in one of his last film appearances, can't quite bring this one off. There's some miscasting, especially Sarsgaard as Bobby Kennedy, whom he neither looks nor acts like. But throughout it all, Portman skillfully evokes Jackie Kennedy in voice and manner without mimicry. I have to credit the producers for making a film with a powerful lead role for a woman, but Jackie Kennedy was a more interesting person than this segment of her life suggests. I'd like to see a fuller biopic, perhaps a TV miniseries, that takes in her reaction to her husband's well-known infidelities and carries her through the controversial marriage to Aristotle Onassis and the rest of the Kennedy tragedies. I'll bet Portman could play the hell out of the rest of Jackie Kennedy's life.
