It’s going to be a steamy one, today, so get ready! What better day to show you Swirl in the Pool? She’s a 20 x 20” painting on wood panel (in my EXPRESSIONS series: link in bio). On hot days like these, I wish we had access to swimming water. Our lake, while very pretty, is much too shallow to swim in, and I’m not ready to brave some of the critters that live in it, either. Instead, I will regard its natural beauty from afar, and will enjoy cooling off in the outdoor shower instead. I hope you manage to remain cool and comfortable during the heatwaves of summer! I can hear the birds singing and the chipmunks chirping through my open window… time to get up and start my day!

A most charming collector friend of mine in Toronto sent me pics of his painting, Duality (from my HOLIDAY EVERYDAY series), installed on the walls of his brand new condo. I love how the painting works in this space, and can be seen from both the second story mezzanine, as well as from the main floor… it’s a gorgeous, light-filled space, and the colors seem to dance across the canvas. What an honour for my artwork to occupy such a central location in his beautiful, new home! It’s almost officially summer… and summer solstice is only two short weeks away from today… where is time flying?! My garden is starting to fill up with blooms of all colors and shapes, inspiring me at every turn, as I inspect my colourful flowerbeds, daily. So much beauty. And yesterday morning, I discovered a fledgling owl in our forest! He still had his downy white fluff on him, though his adult feathers were starting to show at the tips of his wings. That was a couple of hours before we spotted a family of Canada Geese on our lake, whose chicks are now closer to being teenagers than they are babies. It all happens so quickly. I decided to keep this one simple: Midday Sun (24 x 24”) is comprised of one of my favourite color combinations: blue and yellow. In this case, it’s mostly periwinkle blue, with deeper tones of that inky, translucent blue that I love (otherwise known as “blue Jean blue”, in my world). The yellow is mellow: shades of butter. There is no better way to describe it. It makes me feel like I’m basking in the light of a bright, midday sun, and I love the warmth. Heatwave is looming! Other artists who have come before me often influence my work. One such artist is the late Helen Frankenthaler, whose approach was way ahead of her time, in a male-dominated profession. I’ve always loved her loose lines and soft shapes… All The Noise (24 x 30”) is one my Helen F-inspired pieces, and one of few paintings wherein I didn’t add any white to the composition. Instead, it was an exercise in using pure, primary colors, red, yellow and blue. I love how they interact with one another, imparting a sense of strength. Some Funny Story is up on my website, waiting for a loving home to come and get her… You saw her on my painting table in recent days, as a work in progress, and now you can check her out, hanging on a wall. She is all about texture: some parts look like watercolors, as I watered down my acrylic paints, while other parts are thick, smooth and creamy. I applied a satin varnish to her, to keep her from getting scuffed or scratched. She’s a beauty, and is in my series that I call ADVICE ON THINGS (link in bio). I can’t stop! Here’s another painting that I’m working on, also with a muted colour palette. I am inspired by some of the African and Australian aboriginal art that I have seen pictures, online. There is something so beautiful about the repeated patterns and the imperfectly hand drawn shapes and lines that are somehow perfect because of their imperfection. There is beauty in the very human aspect of these works. Signing a painting on-camera is not my forte: I almost always obstruct the view of my signature with something. In this case, my hair! LOL! Just finished painting this piece, and I will be varnishing it today. I am enjoying the softer, more subdued colors, like these calm, cool blues… I am letting them transport me. If I don’t write it, then I know I will be asked, so here you go: I’m using an acrylic marker, available at just about any art supply store.
