It's halfway through the year! Got any favorite albums/books/tv shows/whatever to recommend?

Play Suzerain, it's a really interesting political simulator/visual novel where you play as the newly elected leader of a fictional country in the middle of several crisis. It's one of the most stressful games I've played ever, I could feel my blood pressure rising at certain points in the game

I've slowly been working my way through John Darnielle's Universal Harvester, it's (kind of) about a video rental store clerk in the '90s investigating a series of clips spliced into returned tapes that seem to reveal a serial murderer (?) in rural Iowa

Also I reread The General Zapped an Angel by Howard Fast which is an excellent short story about a general shooting down an angel in Vietnam. You can read it and an introduction to it written by Fast's granddaughter here

Then I've been listening to Thou's new record Umbilical a lot lately. If you like metal (or doom, grunge, hardcore type stuff) give it a listen. If not give the newish Glass Beach album a listen (emo/bedroom pop/post-abunchofstuff)

And last things: watch the Catch-22 film from 1970 and When Evil Lurks from 2023. I saw them both for the first time earlier this year and they're probably the two best movies I've seen so far this year

I was in New York for Christmas and New Year. It was such a fun trip.

I went to see #JohnnyDepp art exhibition #ABunchOfStuff. There is art work, his belongings and an video of his art becoming animated with Johnny commentating. Very insightful to see the other sides to him, the man who has played many people, more than most people have been. This was a quote of his.

Are they thinking about removing the loophole allowing refugees to walk across the border at non-official crossings?

No, it’s not that-- but understand, those people are being arrested when they arrive. They are not being welcomed in Canada. They are coming into open arms and being given shelter, and it makes for great dramatic visuals and cute stories, but under the current law, they will be deported.

They won’t have to go to the US’s horrible horrible detention centers, which I can’t believe are real-- that’s why they’re fleeing. But they won’t be safe either. They will be deported.

I urge you to click through the link-- err, or Google, I guess the original post didn’t have a link-- and read up on the Third Safe Country agreement-- as it stands, any refugee turned away by the US cannot seek asylum in Canada, because the US is presumed to be a safe country. Clearly this is not the case, clearly the agreement needs to be revisited.
