Ace Combat 3 was an incredibly ambitious game, especially for the time period. Fully voice acted, animated cutscenes done by production I.G., 5 different endings (plus 1 true ending), it’s clear that without Ace Combat 3 we would not have classics like AC 5.
I think it’s slightly held back by some of the missions in various routes being repeats, and ultimately you don’t get as much time to develop individual pilots due to the big differences in routes. Plus the enemy pilot AI in this one feels a little cheap compared to future titles.
It is interesting how this game is the primordial soup from which we get future titles. Narrative being a big focus did ultimately pay off in this game, and I’m glad they run with that in later games.
Overall it was a fun time and a satisfying conclusion. Well worth a play through. There’s multiple translations of JP copies floating around and patching it is relatively easy.
I just beat Ace Combat 0 and man. What a great fucking game.
One thing i noticed people haven’t talked about, probably because only like 12 people have played through the fan translation of Ace Combat 3, is how similar the game is to AC3. Pixy is Abyssal Dision, a World With No Boundaries is Ouroboros, hell even the ADFX-01 Morgan is similar in a lot of ways to the Night Raven from AC3. Plus the combat style system feels like a derivation of the multiple endings of AC3.
They are great companion pieces of each other and I would recommend playing them side by side to get a comparison.
the man watched himself and his girlfriend die in his first moments of life. i dont expect him to have a good grip of self since he was just born. do you really expect him to be sane or even relatively stable after that? not even the electrosphere has mental health care.
fatal flaw of mine. every time i try to watch ghost in the shell, which i really should already, i say “already have the plot of ace combat 3 i dont think i need anything more” themes of transhumanism and consciousness just fucks me up a bit
