I'm gonna post this wip here as well because idk when im gonna finish it...

This drawing was inspired by the old circassian corset tradition (which i'll be infodumping about under the cut)

Let me give you a little detail about this drawing because I love talking about circassian culture. Traditionally, circassian women were required to wear corsets from puberty until marriage. They wore them day and night. On the wedding night, the bridegroom initiated the consummation of the bond by cutting the laces of the corset one by one with a sharp dagger. This required high skill and any scar on the bride's body, no matter how small it is, brought great shame upon the groom. This procedure also helped showing how much self-control the groom has (haha)

I know everyone loves knifeplay with Abysswalker (me too) so it always reminded me of this tradition whenever i heard someone mention it lol. As circassians are mostly people in diaspora, Rafayel's story always makes me think of my culture and people, that's why i love drawing paralells between them. I think this tradition just fit Abysswalker and the princess but i might make a circassian backstory for my mc because it feels nice implementing things from myself to the story.

Here are some references to the circassian corsets. The one on the left is apparently a kabardian corset and the other 2 are back and front of adygean corset. I went with the kabardian corset even tho im abkzah because it got more reference like the pic above lol

The corset has been used for good posture, small waist etc but unlike european corsets (which have been a thing in caucasia for much longer than europe), circassian corsets restrict the chest area much more because small bosom was the beauty standart for them. The wood in the corset is a bit crazy,, so sad for the women who were required to wear those. Im not advocating for corsets but still, it's fun to learn about traditions like this and implement them to the fantasy genre

HEARTBEAT

Hiii everyone who might be reading this! This is my first time writing fanfiction so if it seems a little messy or anything that's why :). I was inspired by the discord server I'm on to write this because everyones so talented. I tired my best so I hope yall enjoy!

Summary: Angtsy Abysswalker what if? I'm sorry if it's sad idk what I was on while writing it.

Word count: 1859

"I'm not gonna make it in time" I whisper to myself. I'm running through town trying to make it to the desert. My heart is racing and I'm on edge for what I'm about to do. After spending all that time with Rafayel, I've finally made up my mind and decided to go with what my heart wants the most.

"Rafayel! Wait!" I shout. I'm catching my breath as I struggle to run across the sand. Rafayel turns with a slight look of shock on his face. You were so focused on Rafayel that you didn't notice the other man standing next to him. You can just barely hear him whisper to Rafayel "I'll go on ahead, don't take too long," then he gets on his camel and rides away.

Finally, it's just you and Rafayel and you've never been so nervous before in your life. "Rafayel", you whisper. You reach out to him and your fingers graze his chin. Rafayel grabs your wrist and asks "What're you doing here? I thought.... you forgot about me..." he starts to trail off towards the end of his sentence to where you can just barely make out what he says. You look into his eyes and see that they're filled with sorrow. You know exactly what they're saying because you feel it too. There's a longing there that can never be satisfied unless we're together.

Your other hand reaches up and grabs his face. "There's something I need to say to you and I couldn't let you slip away". He lets go of your other wrist and your hand drops to grab his hand. "What is it, princess?" He says with a hopeful look in his eyes.

"I remembered. I remembered everything about you, about Lemuria and everything that's happened between us" You say.

Rafayel sucks in a quick breath and nuzzles his head into my hand. "Really?" He whispers. “Yes,” you whisper back. Next thing you know Rafayels arms are wrapped around you in a tender embrace.

“Do you know how long I've waited for you to say those words to me?” he says into my neck. You feel your heart break a little at his display of affection because it's only going to make things harder. You squeeze him back, wanting this moment to last forever. There's a desire there, it's like a piece of your heart has finally been put back into your chest. You can't help it, he smells like the sea. He smells like home. Finally, you pull away from him.

Rafayel says with a smile on his face “Sooo, does this mean you're coming back with me cutie? And abandon all these so called princess duties?” He's beaming. You've never seen him look so happy before.

You take a step back. There's a tinge of confusion in his face. He's not sure if he said something wrong. Everything has finally clicked into place for the two of you. “Rafayel…” you whisper. “What? What's wrong? Did I s-say something? Did I do something?” He stammers over his words. He looks panicked. I shouldn't prolong this any longer. “Rafayel, I can't go with you” you whisper. Your voice can barely be heard over the sound of your heart beating. “What're you talking about? Why else did you come here to see me silly? You said you remembered everything right? So what's the problem?” He rambles. He's nervous and keeps rambling but you can't hear him anymore.

“Rafaye,l” you say, interrupting him. He looks at you with a sad longing and eagerness waiting for what you're about to say next. “I need you to do something for me,” you say. “Wh-what is it” he asks with a worried chuckle. I hesitate a little before I say “I need you to take my heart, so you can bring Lemuria back”. Rafayel states at me with his mouth slightly ajar. He starts to shake his head as if he heard you wrong. “What are you talking about? Stop being so silly I'm not gonna do that.” he chuckles a little he thinks you're joking. You grab his hand and say “Rafayel please”. You look him in the eyes and he can see the determination in them.

He takes a step back cause he can't process the words you're saying to him. “Your people need you! It's been thousands of years and they're waiting for you! Think about your people, Rafayel!” You exclaim. “You don't think I know that!” He shakes his head. “You said you remembered everything about the past so you know what I've sacrificed for us to be together! We've been given a second chance and you just wanna throw it away! My people are gone. The sea god is gone. It's supposed to be you and me against the world now!” He says to me in desperation. There's a pleading in his eyes that I've never seen before. A longing that could last a thousand lifetimes.

“Rafayel” I take a deep breath before I continue. I knew this was gonna be hard but I've never seen him so angry and dejected before. “Rafayel, this is more than just us. You're people are what's important. Don't you wanna see Lemuria again?” He shakes his head again and takes a step back as he says “No, I won't do it. You know that once Lemurians are bound to their person it's their reason to live. If you're gone then what would become of me? I can't lead my people if I have no will to live. You're my inspiration, the air that I breathe. Without you, there's no reason for Lemuria to even exist. For me to exist.” Tears start to form in his eyes.

You bring your hand up and caress his face, wiping away a tear that started to fall. He leans into it and nuzzles his head into your hand. “Rafayel,” you say. A sadness, heavy in your heart. You struggle to say the next few words “I know that once a Lemurian bond, they can't go against the wishes of their mate”. You pull back your hand and hear a small gasp escape his lips. “I order you to take my heart and bring Lemuria back,” you say. Rafayel takes in a sudden breath and stills. “N-no” he stutters. “No! I can’t. I don't want to. Please don't make me” he begs you. Another tear falls down his face but this time you don't wipe it away.

Before you let him fully process his emotions, you pull out a blade that you kept tucked away in your boot. “Here, use this,” you say. You hold the blade out for him to cut your heart out with. He looks at you with confusion splattered on his face. He shakes his head a little, you can tell he's still processing what the situation is.

After a few heartbeats, he looks at you and says “This isn't how it was meant to be. I erased your memory but then you remembered and I was so happy.” He takes a step forward and knocks the blade out of your hand. He struggles as he does it because he's not supposed to go against your orders. “We can still leave together, it's not too late! Forget about Lemuria all I want is you! Please don't make me do this. Please please please.”

Tears start to form in your eyes. You have to get this over with soon before you get cold feet. You can't live with yourself if you let all of Lemuria stay lost forever because of your selfish desire to be with Rafayel. He falls to his knees and hugs your legs. “Please.” He says again. “Being with you is all I ever need in life. If we can't be together my heart will never be full and I'll be left longing for you for all of eternity. I love you with all my heart.” Your heart skips a beat. “Rafayel” you muster to say. “Get up”. He looks up at you and very slowly prys himself away from you until you're standing face to face. “I love you too, Rafayel,” you say to him.

A smile tugs at your lips and you go in for a hug. Rafayel wraps his arms around you and gives you the most affectionate hug you've ever been given. It's as if he never wants to let you go and stay in this moment forever. But you can't.

In one swift motion, you pull Rafayels blade that he keeps hidden on his belt and push him away. You stab yourself in the heart. You knew it'd be painful but the pain starts to numb quickly cause it's what was always meant to happen. You've dreamed about this once before but didn't realize you'd be the one to rip your own heart from your chest.

Rafayel surges forward to grab you as you fall to your knees. “My love, wh-why would you do this to me?” he says as his voice cracks. You can hear the pain and heartbreak in his voice. “I choose my own fate Rafayel” you cough a little. “I can't stand by while you let your people suffer any longer. They need you. Trust me when I say this doesn't come easy for me either.” Another cough and you let out a strained chuckle. You can feel Rafayel trembling under you. You can see he's trying to suppress his sobs. “we can ss-still get you h-help” he stutters and looks around. “No,” you say.

A strained smile spreads across your lips. You lift your hand to try and cup his cheek but struggle to do so. So Rafayel grasps it with one hand and pulls it towards his heart. “I will love you now and always no matter how much time has passed I will continue to long for you. Our bond will never be broken and I'll continue to search for you for a millenia if that's what it takes. I'm not sure what this means for us since you've given me back my heart but I'll find my way back to you no matter what” he says. You're barely conscious now but can feel his tears fall onto your face.

When did he start crying? You think to yourself. It's hard to tell what's real and not real as you start to fade away. Being separated from your soulmate is the worst pain you've felt in your whole existence but being in Rafayels arms in these final moments isn't so bad. After some time has passed with Rafayel holding you as you lay dying you finally muster the energy to say “We'll find each other again, I promise.”

Epilogue:

After some time has passed, Rafayel is able to bring Lemuria back from the dead. The Oceans are full and the people are happy but something is missing. It's almost as if it lacks the spark it once had.

The sea god spends most of his time away from the Lemurians and no one knows for sure why. Some say he's out there looking for his heart.
