Was watching the Silent Hill films just for the fuck of it and what I didn’t expect was the occasional jump scare of “oh hey it’s that actor” like I knew Sean Bean was in them but I was like “oh shit is that Deborah Kara Unger? Kit Harington’s in this movie? What have they done to Carrie-Anne Moss’ eyebrows? MALCOM MCDOWELL?” and just when you think you’re out of the woods, fuckin William Easton from Saw VI is the truck driver

A Burmese actress last night won an award at an international film festival in Germany despite the fact that she – and almost everyone else who worked on the Myanmar film which premiered there – is in military custody or on the run.
Eaindra Kyaw Zin was not present to receive her award at the Oldenburg Film Festival, neither was any of the cast or crew of their film which premiered there, What Happened to the Wolf? Director Na Gyi and his wife Pang Phyo Thu, who starred, are in hiding as fugitives of the military dictatorship. So is actor Aung Myint Myat.
“We celebrate her elegance, her soul and her invaluable gift to cinema with hope that this reaches her. It is our honor to present this award to Eaindra Kyaw Zin,” said Canadian actress Deborah Kara Unger, who was overcome with emotion as she presented the award. It was accepted by a friend of the director.
Not only is the film’s depiction of LGBT romance transgressive in culturally conservative Myanmar, but the filmmakers and performers have been branded enemies of the state for their advocacy to return power to civilian hands.
Their absence was noted by festival director Toresten Neumann when the film premiered there Thursday.
“It is a beautiful film and the director Na Gyi and his wife had to hide because they are being blackmailed by the military junta for stepping up and fighting for the democracy that has been taken away from the country,” said Neumann, who along with others wore T-shirts emblazoned with Eaindra Kyaw Zin’s name. “And this beautiful actress that I wear on my T-shirt tonight is imprisoned, and nobody knows how she’s doing.”
Just a year ago, director Na Gyi was leading the #RatingSystemNow campaign. Now he and Paing Phyo Thu, who also appeared in his award-winning 2018 debut Mi, are among dozens of celebrities forced into hiding after the junta accused them of defamation.
Eaindra Kyaw Zin, one of Myanmar’s highest-paid actresses with two Myanmar Academy Awards under her belt, was arrested in April along with her actor husband Pyay Ti Oo for participating in anti-coup protests.
The film follows terminally ill patients Way (Paing Phyo Thu) and Moe (Eindra Kyaw Zin) who meet in a hospital. They find comfort in each other and ultimate embark on a road trip together to a Shan State destination famous for its sea of clouds.

Jackals (2017)
Genre: Horror
Who’s In It: Deborah Kara Unger, Ben Sullivan, Johnathon Schaech, Stephen Dorff, Nick Roux. Chelsea Ricketts
Who Directed It: Kevin Greutert
Plot:  Set in the 1980s, an estranged family hires a cult deprogrammer to take back their teenage son from a murderous cult, but find themselves under siege when the cultists surround their cabin, demanding the boy back.
Running Time: 85 Minutes
IMDB Score: 5.0
Metascore: 33
Why I Watched It: Mostly the premise and the cast.
How I Watched It: Amazon Prime Canada
Random Thoughts: First off this kind of looks like The Strangers but don’t be fooled it’s not and it’s not as good.
The trailer is kind of misleading, this isn’t really a home invasion the bad guys want a person who is in their cult but they really don’t go into the house and hold the family hostage.
Watching this film I came up with my new favorite phrase to describe a film’s flaw “The movie didn’t know how to movie, pure and simple”
What I Liked: This is not a terrible film, not real bad either but to be honest there’s not much I liked, well there’s two things.  I really liked Johnathon Schaech performance, he’s really the only one but he’s very good here and he almost makes the film watchable, truth be told I almost turned it off.  I also like Stephen Dorff but mostly cause I like him as an actor.
Other than that the film is just kind of there and to be fair this film is a short at best, the run time of 85 minutes is padded, they had maybe 30 minutes of story to tell.
What I Didn’t Like: I’m gonna go into spoilers and to be honest there’s something that happens even before the mid-way mark so it’s not a huge spoiler but it didn’t ruin the film for me.  SO the set up of this family hiring someone to grab their son from a cult and deprogram him never happens, sure they take him but the funny thing is the kid who’s like 20 years old is a psycho, now you can say the cult brainwashed him or you could say this is what he’s like, we don’t know but I will say this his character is so unlikable and so vile I would have given him back to the cult.
The film doesn’t deliver on the premise cause here’s a kind of spoiler the deprogrammer is killed really early in the film after he does a very stupid thing, once he’s killed there’s no movie.  Yes he was played by Stephen Dorff and if he was written like a bad ass, he’s ex army, this movie might have had somewhere to go but the last 40 or so odd minutes of this family trying to keep the cult from getting in or giving back their son/brother/boyfriend, by the way they have no way out and no help is coming and oh yeah there’s a baby in the cabin as well.
Sure it’s a dark and disturbing film but there’s not a lot of tension cause we know what’s going to happen, Schaech’s character is the only smart and likable one in the bunch and he’s out numbered.  So the last 30 minutes of the film just drags cause they have no way out.  There’s no movie here, the plot is done and the characters aren’t likable enough to make us care. Also the cult is just masked people, they’re scary and creepy but they wear masks and just stand around.  The funny thing is they could have just rushed the place and got this over with in like ten minutes and I forgot to mention the family’s son wants to go with them and tries to help and attacks his family.
I can kind of see what they wanted to do, make this very dark and intense and very fatalistic  film but the weight just isn’t there, this is a B-Horror movie and it’s not fun and it’s not thrilling and you don’t care what happens.
Final Thoughts: I really disliked the film, I should have turned it off.  Alright idea just really bad execution.
Rating: 3/10

THE LONG NIGHT - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Well Go USA Entertainment
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS:  New York transplant Grace goes in search of the parents she’s never known and a promising lead takes her to a southern plantation, the alleged stomping grounds of her childhood. Accompanied by her boyfriend they attempt to investigate her family’s whereabouts. Their arrival is plagued by bizarre events and the couple’s weekend takes a terrifying turn as a nightmarish cult and their maniacal leader terrorize the pair on route to fulfilling a twisted ancient apocalyptic prophecy.
REVIEW: As Dr. Zaius warned Taylor in “The Planet of the Apes, “Don't look for it Taylor, you may not like what you find,” Grace goes in search of her biological parents with disastrous results.
Robert Sheppe and Mark Young’s screenplay places contemporary within a traditional tale that is set against the backdrop of a Southern plantation. Once the couple arrive the action is limited to the interior of the house and a small area of the surrounding grounds. The plot, I feel, misses some opportunities to engage the viewer as it lacks some details about the cult and the spirit trapped there. It all seems superficial as there is nothing to hook the viewer in terms of character development. There are moments when the dialogue seems uninspired or annoying. The secondary characters simply seem to be there to have a body count. The plot lacks any real gravitas so that at its best it felt like an R.L. Stein “Goosebumps” story. It’s not bad, it’s just that I can take out movies from the adult section now.
The location, costume designs and production values are solid. Rich Ragsdale does a fine job of setting up shots and, at times, capturing interesting performances. The film has a nice pace, but I found it lacking any tension or suspense. The cinematography was nice, crisp, and didn’t create any atmosphere, which the film needed. The special effects are suitable for the narrative and felt a bit reserved for this veteran genre fan.
Genre fans will recognize actress Scout Taylor-Comptonis from her role as Laurie Strode in the Rob Zombie “Halloween” films. Since then she’s added quite a few acting credits to her resume in both film and television projects. Her performance here doesn't gel, and that might be a result of what isn’t on the page and/or direction. It feels hollow-hearted and at times forced. There is a scene where she performs this physical transformation, but that could have been her or a stunt double. Whoever it was, nice job. Nolan Gerard Funk’s performance was annoying, again either the writing or direction, and the character could not die soon enough for me. Clearly Deborah Kara Unger and Jeff Fahey are in the film for their name recognition. They do a solid job working with the limitations of the material and were part of my interest in seeing the film through.
Understandably, THE LONG NIGHT is a flawed film. It feels like a horror film for a horror film’s sake. The narrative lacks anything new or different to elevate the concept. I was engaged because I was interested in seeing some of the actors and curious to how the story played out. In the end I found the film lacking any real “ooos” or “ahs,” and low on energy. For the veteran horror fan let me again turn to the words of the sage Dr. Zaius, “Don't look for it Taylor, you may not like what you find.”

For this icily erotic fusion of flesh and machine, David Cronenberg adapted J. G. Ballard’s future-shock novel of the 1970s into one of the most singular and provocative films of the 1990s.
A traffic collision involving a disaffected commercial producer, James (James Spader), and an enigmatic doctor, Helen (Holly Hunter), brings them, along with James’s wife, Catherine (Deborah Kara Unger, in a sublimely detached performance), together in a crucible of blood and broken glass—and it’s not long before they are all initiated into a kinky, death-obsessed underworld of sadomasochistic car-crash fetishists for whom twisted metal and scar tissue are the ultimate turn-ons.
Controversial from the moment it premiered at Cannes—where it won a Special Jury Prize “for originality, for daring, and for audacity”—Crash has since taken its place as a key text of late-twentieth-century cinema, a disturbingly seductive treatise on the relationships between humanity and technology, sex and violence, that is as unsettling as it is mesmerizing.
