Adaine's Furious Fist pt 2

The second day of school starts with half an assembly, half a wake. You aren't surprised, but you also don't really care. Arthur was a crackpot, but you respected him for his bloodlust and power, not to mention when he was more in his faculties his refusal to play by anyone's rules but his own, and probably not even then. Doreen was a fine woman, but you normally ate in the teacher's lounge so your paths didn't really cross.

Gibbons on the other hand was an asshole, through and through, you're glad he's gone. He might have preached about feelings and all that garbage as the guidance counselor, but you've always known what he was. He could fool everyone else with the calm caring persona he put on, but you always knew there was a monster bubbling under the surface. He had was fueled by spite, not even rage, and was just too much of a coward to do anything about it. The look in his eye that he always had when talking to someone who turned away and he thought no one was watching. It actually creeped you out enough to avoid the little bastard.

Well he's dead now, probably in some hell somewhere if there's any justice in this world, and Justice has been dead for a long time. You'll find his grave after school and piss on it when no one is around for your own form of justice.

But well death happens and time moves on. You still have classes to teach and the second day which means you actually get a good look at the freshman this year. There are always two types of barbarian freshmen. There are those who are afraid of their rage, soft weaklings that you need to mold, or there are arrogant little bitches. The latter were often kids who hit puberty before the rest of their age group. They grew taller and stronger earlier which tended to give them an ego. It was important to break them down early, to knock them off their high horses and make them realize there was more to being a barbarian, more to rage than just being bigger and stronger than your opponent. Sure it helped, but monsters tended to be bigger than adventurers, even if they're not bigger than you anymore, so being bigger and stronger than the rest of your party didn't cut it in the real world.

That's why you have the gauntlet the first Friday of the year for your freshman class. You open it up to all comers in class, anyone who can take you in a one on one fight gets an A for the semester, don't even have to come to class. You won't even use your warhammer, just your barehands. You've been teaching at Aguefort for a long time, no ones even managed to knock you down much less beat you. There are always some cocky little shit who thinks they're big and bad because they're taller or stronger than their classmates, but none of them are as big or as strong as you. Usually three is enough for the class to get the message, and this year will be likely be no different.

As always, it's always the bigger stronger races in your class. Goliaths, half-orcs, orcs, firbolgs who aren't interested in druid classes. But there are also two shorties in your class this year. Donavan a Satyr and Skuttle a Kobold. Both short, both girls, but you don't care. You're a lot of things, but you're not racist or sexist. sure you are planning on other throwing your goddess to take her place, but that's because she's not willing to finish off her ex wife or sister. And for power, power a big part of it. But no, it's not about putting a woman in her place no matter what anyone might think.

Donavan is a trembly as the Abernant girl was yesterday. But there's something about her that makes you take an interest. She's strong, not the strongest, but it's still something. She hasn't even raged yet, but there's something about her that stops you from suggesting she take a different track.

Skuttle on the other hand is the strangest barbarian student you've ever seen. You've mostly seen the scared or the cocky, you've never met an apathetic barbarian until yesterday. You thought it might have been first day nerves, but she might actually just be like that. She does what you tell her to do, nothing more nothing less. Like Donavan she's strong for her size, but you're still unsure how to teach her. You just decide to ignore her for now, let her do the classwork and then go on her forums for whatever. Not worth teaching someone who is apathetic in the face of rage.

The only other outlier is Thistlespring. He says his name is Gorgug, you don't really care, he looks like a Gorbag to you anyway. He's the softest fucking barbarian that you've ever seen. He actually thinks singing is a good way to deal with foes. He is strong as fuck, but you still almost kicked him out of your class then and there you were so angry.

But then the Fig girl, the tiefling from the other day piped up. she might be enrolled in the bard class, she might even be a bard, but you can tell she's a barbarian at heart. There's a fire in her, not just in her blood, and it was pure poetry that came out of her mouth when she talked about rage. You almost shed a tear. You were a bit let down when you learned it wasn't her that finished off Doreen, but it will be worth it to have her in your class regardless now.

The worst part of Arthur dying is Kalvaxus is the new acting principal, kind of. He doesn't actually have that much power since he's still the vice principal, but he acts like he's in charge. The new video crystals that the faculty has to review every day or so so and it's your turn now.

You hate reviewing the crystal footage, sure Watches and Wards might not be in the library, but who would be foolish enough to attack a school of adventurers right after their principal and other faculty was killed. It might seem like a good time for idiots, but it actually meant the school was on high alert.

You also hated the AV club, especially that Biz. He thinks he's some sort of stud and the gods gift to women. You want to turn the little bastard into mulch the second he said two words to you, but you have to maintain the teacher persona for awhile. Arthur might be dead, but you are no closer to the name so the plan is stalled for a bit unfortunately enough.

It was boring reviewing the footage, kids doing dumb kid things, yougot enough of that in class. that is until you reviewed the AV club footage that you find something interesting. Fig and Gorbag's adventuring party they formed with the other detention kids shows up there. They're still only first years but they seem more competent than any first years you meet. Arianwen's daughter..., Balewyn is there clearly being a key part in the investigation. But Biz doesn't care enough about that, just about the pretty girl who waltzed into his lair.

Your blood boils. You don't care about the girl at all, you don't even know her name other than Abernant, but you might not be a bad guy, there are some rules you should follow if you're going to call yourself an adventurer. There's something called professional courtesy. Sure adventurers fell in love all the time, but that doesn't mean you hit on everyone you find attractive. That's just creepy and annoying. regardless if they are students, they are at the adventuring academy and trying to solve a mystery, that means the Abernant girl, no matter how pretty she is, Biz should have respected her as a fellow student at the very least or a fellow adventurer.

But you actually laugh at the way the wizard girl dresses down Biz. She calls him on his shit and dresses him down on the way he talked to her and her friend Gorbag without any mercy. It was a thing of Beauty. It's strange for you to applaud a sharp Abernant tongue, but you do all the same. She didn't look scared now, she looked righteous. Not quite the same as rage, but when she talked was so sure and right, you're not even sure you're looking at the same girl as the other day.

Unfortunately that was it, but it actually seemed to make Biz think, even if you could tell it wouldn't last. They all rush off after seeing something in the monitors, but you're done for the day so you don't care. Still, between that Fig girl and this Abernant daughter, there's prospects to the plan that you never thought of

fighter/wizard adaine

a more practical build, which does feel in-character for adaine “jacket of useful things” abernant.

okay look the oracle & greatest diviner of her age probably can’t/won’t just change her subclass BUT she can definitely backdoor her way into what are effectively bladesinger abilities. bonus of not having to do the more charisma-heavy and anxiety-inducing performance parts of bladesinging which don’t feel very adaine. 

(tangent: okay okay wait though. au where adaine voluntarily switches her subclass to become a bladesinger and the powers of the oracle switch to the next greatest diviner of the age and it’s ayda aguefort, oracle of everybody, and her bodyguard and best friend adaine abernant serving her with word and sword.)

her new arcane focus is the sword of sight okay that thing absolutely deserves to be wielded in combat! 

cast bigby’s hand to attack on a bonus action + adaine’s furious fist spells + adaine’s literal fist? forget the diviner’s eye imagery, adaine’s new motif is literally throwing hands. 

part of the reason why i think both the fighter and barbarian classes are interesting multiclasses is that both of them would surround adaine with (even more) friends who share her class! if adaine took fighter levels there would be five (5) fighters within the bad kids + seven maidens; they could fully form an only-fighter party for a field trip or extra credit or something (with the benefit of multiclass levels in bard, ranger, wizard, and barbarian, which is a surprisingly balanced party actually).

adaine and fabian’s relationship feels very contentious in canon and i think adaine could stand to learn abt smth fabian has spent a lot of time getting very good at! a true wizard never shirks an opportunity to learn! 

you’ve heard about the inherent homoeroticism of dueling but in this case it’d be more about the inherent tension/trust of platonic dueling. For Friendship! 

fabian and katja and adaine become the absolutely insufferable rich kid fighter club. they probably fence while holding their pinkies out or something. kippers are served. 

barbarian/wizard adaine

can’t cast spells or hold concentration while raging, making this a beautifully deoptimized build. it makes the decision much more obvious that every combat she will have to choose whether to hit ppl with magic or hit people with... hits. 

an adaine who gets a chance to not see anger and emotion and being upset not as a weakness but as something she can shape into a strength

adaine “you better hold me back” abernant.

remember that time in the fhsy finale where ayda, flying, picked up gorgug and just dropped him on the sprite he was fighting so he wouldn’t have to spend times dashing to get there? that, but with ayda&adaine ultimate double diviner team-up.

there won’t be a single biz glitterdew wannabe around elmville left. she will raze their homes and salt the earth.

iirc the sword of sight is a two-handed weapon? no finesse here baybee, adaine’s gonna SMACK YOU.

having furious fist and using it one (1) time in sophomore year made adaine go mad with power and she wants Even More Of That Please And Thank You. 

gives the party two (2) people with some barbarian abilities on top of their actual barbarian. adaine would absolutely go to porter’s class even though fig still doesn’t even after getting reckless shred back. 

adaine&gorgug bonding over barbarian things. adaine’s new post-fhsy strength still not allowing her to lift gorgug’s axe but her trying anyway when they train together. i think they’d be the kind of people to do small fiddly artificer/wizard homework very loudly (adaine flips pages noisily and mutters to herself and groans loudly when she doesn’t get something; gorgug’s chair creaks just so loudly as he constantly adjusts and he probably uses power tools and hammers more than your average artificer would because that’s his literal strength) and on the other hand do barbarian practice extremely quietly (just. silently lifting weights together without needing to talk. fabian finds them and thinks they’re extremely creepy and confusing)

truly just the biggest possible fuck-you to elven traditions. 

adaine gets to be loud and angry and messy, hair flying in the wind, hands sword-callused and bruised-knuckled, and all of it only makes her more powerful

I’m. struggling to see how adaine and kristen fit into this au. I know I’ve joked before abt adaine joining the bloodrush team so she can get out her rage without casting adaine’s furious fist ten times a day, but I don’t. necessarily think that it would make sense in this fic for adaine and kristen to be on the team. like, the owlbears team dynamic is very very different than the full bad kids dynamic. I know how riz fits and what his role will be in the story but it’s not a bardy boys fic, its an owlbears fic

on the flip side though it feels weird to have 4/6 of the bad kids in prominent roles and... not include the other two at all

Adaine's Furious Fists part 1

Porter takes Adaine under his wing au Day 1

Just a quick story/summary of how things would go if Porter took Adaine under his wing throughout the series. I made a post about how she is the perfect candidate for him with her anger throughout the series and this happened on a whim. Adaine and Porter actually could have had a really interesting story given how their lives actually intertwine a lot if you think about it. So Regardless, read this if you want, I just thought it might be a fun idea.

First day of freshman year porter is scoping out potential prospects in the courtyard not coming up with much.

Puts a maybe down for fabian, he seems more like a grandstander, but he did punch a kid bigger than him without provocation. Still more ropey than strong, but there are dexy barbarians. Gorgug is a likely candidate, he seems soft, but was able to go into a rage and pummel his attacker, Porter could work with that if he had to. But the metal flower and the singing ticks Porter off. Riz is a low maybe to a no, kids being bullied on the first day are usually a good source of rage, but the goblin kid just seems to take it. Fig he doesn't have a chance to see since she sneaks into the teacher's lounge so early. Kirsten is a hard no, religious trauma can bring out a lot of sweet rage, but with Daybreak breathing down her neck it would be hard to get close to her without alerting suspicion. Adaine is a hard no. A tiny trembling high elf wizard with a huge orb she could barely carry, wearing the uniform of the prissy magic school? No way, no how, Porter doesn't even bother to learn her name.

Later that day he sees Adaine have a panic attack over being given detention and he writes her off even harder because it's pathetic. But seeing Fig stand up for her, she's not the ideal barbarian, but she is a young tiefling girl full of rage and Porter see's his opportunity.

Even later he's called to the cafeteria and sees Doreen, Arthur, and Mr. Gibbons dead with corn everywhere. Goldenhorde explains vaguely what happened and tells them to watch. It would be a horrific scene for a bunch of freshman, but Porter has seen and done worse. Still, he doesn't want to talk to Jace right now. The guy is powerful, but too much of a talker for Porter's liking. He knows some of the kids died and were brought back, that's why Arthur and Mr. Gibbons are dead, but little else. He does notice that Doreen's skull is caved in. He thinks of what little he knows about the kids, of the maybes, only fig has a weapon that deals bludgeoning damage so he assumes it was her and now intends to take her under his wing now that she got her first kill.

Once the cops come, he and Jace leave, Porter goes to observe the kids. They all seems broken and beaten, and about to be sick, not surprising. Porter doesn't have any sympathy for them, but he does understand so it's not enough to write any of them off. They're clean enough but the blood on your hands doesn't wash out as easily.

Porter is intent on Fig, because he thinks she's the one who killed Doreen. When Sandra Lynn comes to pick her up he notices that she's an elf, and Fig was dropped off at school by a different elf, yet their daughter's a tiefling. That might explain why she's so angry the first day since she seems like a newly presenting tiefling. Trouble at home can be juicy, especially when fell blood is involved.

Last to leave is the pathetic little high elf girl, you could use her spine like a meter stick with how straight the girl is standing. Porter can understand being sick or scared after your first battle, but he feels like he's within his rights to mock this little elf girl when no one else is around. He has enough of stuck up high elves to deal with as it is, it's good to see them scared.

But speak of the devil, Arianwen fucking Abernant shows up to pick her daughter up and clearly doesn't want to be seen at Aguefort of all places. Porter knows Arianwen and hates her, she's another teacher and their town only has two so they're bound to run into each other from time to time. They're also technically allies through the Shadowcat, who Arianwen is the main liaison. They don't work together exactly, but there's no reason they all can't exchange favors when working on their own evil plans. Arianwen is a cold, stuck up bitch, but she's a powerful stuck up bitch.

The fact that she's hear means the little elf girl is her daughter, now Porter actually feels a bit sorry for the child. It's one thing to be scared after your first battle when you watched people, including your..., 'friends,' might be to early for that since it's the first day, but people your own age die. It's another to be forced to deal with Arianwen afterwards. Porter still finds it pathetic, but is more lenient since he knows what Arianwen is like, especially if the girl is here instead of at the magic school her mother teaches at. that explains the uniform at least.

Then something happens he's too far away to hear, but Arianwen says something to her, likely to berate her. Porter expects the little elf girl to flinch and cower, but to his surprise, she snaps back at her mother despite her fear. It's not much, but despite how afraid she looked only moments ago Porter can see the fury in her eyes when she snaps back at her mother and it's something that Porter wants to see more of.

Later on Goldenhorde/Kalvaxus is given the faculty the full rundown of what happened. Porter knows more than most of his fellow teachers, but when Kalvaxus mentions Doreen being killed he talks about how she was bludgeoned to death by her own ladle. Not Fig's bass like Porter assumed. One of the other members of the faculty, one of the casters that Porter didn't bother to learn the name of, asks which of the kids did it.

Goldenhorde says it was Adaine, for a moment Porter almost asks 'who the fuck is that' out loud. Since he didn't really learn the names of most of them yet. But Tiberia Runestaff, another frigid wizard bitch, chimes in as always 'Adaine Abernant beat Doreen to death with her own ladle? The girl is ten pounds soaking wet and a wizard, why did she use a ladle" clearly angry that one of her wizards would pop their kill cherry with a martial weapon instead of her arcane abilities, but Porter doesn't care.

Learning that Arianwen's daughter was the one who murdered Doreen, and with a ladle is interesting. And moves Adaine from a hard no to a solid maybe in his rage book.
