The Love Game (Part 1/?)
The Royal Romance meets The Crown and The Flame! For the sake of a new peace, Kenna must choose between contenders for her future king or queen. Ships: (Eventual Kenna/Raydan, Kenna/Diavolos, Kenna/Val, Kenna/Annelyse, Kenna/Tevan, Kenna/Dominic) (Eventual Underlying Sei/Dominic, Will/Dominic, Val/Annelyse, Zenobia/Tevan, Rowan/Kai)
If she had known it will come down to this, Kenna would have eloped. It was a simple thing really, she just said she didn’t want to marry yet. Now, she was sure it was a better answer than suddenly proposing to who she pleased after winning the battle of her life but the nobility saw a way to win people over. It was barbaric, really. Breads and circuses to pass time while everything was situated was a ridiculous but effective idea. All she had to do was play a love game. With various suitors chosen by nobility. After fighting for so long she did not even have the peace to develop a relationship with a man or woman she was interested in. Nevertheless she had to give in, because for now it would solve the issue of diplomacy.
Tevan was so elated when he got the news that he appointed himself as the suitor from Fydoria. He had always admired Kenna since she saved him, but now he was able to show her people he was the right choice. He assumed it would be easy, after all he was probably the prettiest in the competition. How hard could it be after all? “I am sure the kingdoms have matters that are more important than a courting rite.” Aurryn mumbled shyly as she looked up from the book she was reading at the table.
“Which is exactly why they need it.” Tevan replied with ease as he stood up. “Romance is the best type of sto–”
“Actually mytho–”
“Hush sister.” Tevan interrupted smoothly as he walked away. He had a Queen to win over.
“No.” Noa said quickly before Kai could answer.
“Okay, I’ll do it.” she coolly replied with a smile.
“What? Kai, no.”
“Noa yes,” she reached out for him,“We need to build relations.”
“We are already rebuilding their walls! No.”
“It will be fun, it’s a strong political move, and maybe there will be love.”
And so the argument ended in silence between the two siblings, confidence radiating off of one, and worry springing from the other.
Rowan sat alone in her kingdom of thorns. It was idiotic of the Stormholt Queen really. There were better things to do. Like figure out taxes and trade. Still, she managed to find the rose in the bush. She could have a bigger presence, and establish her dominance as a queen. So, she decided silently to herself that Thorngate’s suitor would be her.
Annelyse felt hope. She had another chance with Kenna. She had always been a dear friend but she felt something stronger.
There was always this unspoken connection. Kenna provided her more satisfaction than any man would. She understood what it was like to be a powerful women. Kenna respected her and her way of ruling.
Annelyse would have been more open about these feelings but she realized three truth at that time.
Number one was she was a woman who was expected to keep the Adair line in place. Her father had no sons, or daughters, so she had to continue the social climb. At the time she met Kenna the woman with no kingdom was penniless. It didn’t mean she wanted her any less.
Number two was she had to guard her heart. When they met she knew Kenna was after funds and an army. She had to be naïve to set that aside. She let Raydan observe, just like she made him do with anyone else who was after her.
Finally, Kenna had a big heart. A big heart was a confusing heart. She saw Kenna and how other people looked at her. Though she would not say who, she knew she wasn’t confident in knowing that she was Kenna’s only. This also meant that she was right about one thing: as far as she could tell, the queen would never be satisfied.
Annelyse knew one thing that no one else did. Kenna was born on a throne of blood. She became queen in a untraditional way. Kenna had her title ripped away from her, and she only became queen by war. Until this last battle she had always been at war. Annelyse could not recall a time when she was at peace. She did not know how Kenna would rule. Would she be hungry for battle? Would she be able to handle economic diplomacy? Or would she be a stagnant queen?
Annelyse pushed all thoughts of doubt of the way as she prepared to make her way to Stormholt in hopes of Kenna returning her feelings.
“Wait, what?” Val almost exclaimed as she put a training sword back on its rack. She had just finished a training session when Whitlock made an unexpected visit to tell her that the Foundry had officially made her a suitor to Kenna.
“Cmon I know how you li-” Whitlock was immediately cut off when Val slapped her hand over his mouth with a glare.
“Someone will hear you.” She hissed as her eyes darted around the room.
Whitlock pulled her hand from his mouth and said,“Say what you want, but I’m pulling for you. They’re only taking noble’s choice and this is your only chance.”
Val looked down, weighing her options. “Fine.”
“I. Don’t. Like. You.” Sei said through gritted teeth as she glared at Dom, her eyes refusing to portray her real thoughts.
“Admit it Sei-Sei you lo-” Dom stopped immediately as he saw Anu walking towards them. Ever since the volcano the old man still has not spoke to him.
“We have new word from Stormholt.” Anu said smoothly, his gaze not meeting Don’s.
“Dom has been here for a while.”
“Yes, well it seems he has been slow on the news… Queen Kenna is going to have all the kingdoms to chose one representative and contend for her hand in marriage.”
Sei’s gaze flickered to Dom, looking for a reaction. She was disappointed. His eyes were filled with something she could describe as a mix of hurt and jealousy. She sighed and looked at her grandfather. “I know who to send.”
“Who?” Anu and Dom both said at the same time.
“Dominic Hunter.”
“I just don’t see why it has to be you.” Adder said carefully as she stared up at Diavolos. She had no feelings that radiated off of neutrality for him but she had someone else in mind.
“Who would you suggest, your spymaster brother who works under Queen Kenna in Stormholt and who has no allegiance to Abanthus.” Zenobia said smoothly with venom coating her voice.
Diavolos managed to keep his cool even though he wanted to back up his sister. With passive aggressiveness he said, “I know Kenna more than anyone else who lives here. I am of noble blood. I have fought more battles than anyone else sitting at this table for three. I am more than certain than I am qualified to compete and win her hand. Need I remind you Adder, that we only need you for decision regarding our economy.”
Diavolos’ mind was set on winning Kenna’s hand. It would be easy. He was sure he had already won her affections, and a marriage with him would be the best for all the kingdoms. He promised security for her legacy, something he was sure the other suitors would not provide.
“I am sorry Lady Lia, I am afraid I cannot.” Raydan said, his eyes not leaving the ground. He was on a diplomatic mission to the young Empress’s country when the news quickly followed him.
“Very well, but I insist we play a game before you leave.” The child said with a bright smile while Jorrin’s eyes bore into him, looking for any signs of betrayal.
“Fine, what is it.” Raydan said with a small smile, disregarding Jorrin and ruffling her white hair.
“Sly fox.” Lia said with a mischievous smile.
“I feel like I walked into that.” Raydan muttered as he averted his gaze.
“Sly fox says… You continue to have strong feeling for Kenna Rys.”
Raydan groaned,“Correct.”
“Why don’t you marry her?”
He sighed, wringing his hands together. “We are from different worlds. I live in the shadows and she walks in the light. She will have no benefit from having a King with no worth other than being a former spy. I don’t think she knows that I would give this life up for her just to stay by her side everyday.
“But love has to be enough!” Lia squeaked, almost jumping up from her bench.
“Alas it isn’t. And now it’s my turn. Sly fox says…” he looked at her growing smile and her eyes that seemed to be holding something in. He stopped a groan from coming out. “You have plans for me.”
“Correct! I would like to name you Lord Raydan of Marossi, contender for Queen Kenna’s hand.”
“Lia no.” Raydan said desperately.
“Lia yes! You love her!”
“Yes, but shouldn’t you chose an actual citizens.”
Lia looked down at her feet shyly, “Well, the actual citizens are still wary after mother’s…departure.”
“What about Jorrin?”
“Jorrin is not interested.”
“You are an empress!”
“I am an empress who believes in love and good men. I think you are a good man Raydan, and a suitor who would win Kenna’s heart and form a strong bond with my empire.” Lia said innocently.
“I can’t get out of this, can I?” Raydan sighed as he looked up at Jorrin. Jorrin shook his head with amusement in his eyes.
“Shall we get started then?” Lia said excitedly, hopping up.
“We shall.”
Raydan felt unbelievably nervous. Could he convince her that he was a good husband. Could he be enough? He dreamed of a reality where they are just common people on the street with no worries. All they had to do was love.

a girl like you should wear a warning ;
KENNA & ADDER; the crown & the flame. she must like you. i’ve never seen adder part with one of her fangs before, raydan had told kenna. he was, as usual, correct.
aka adder should have been an li and we all know it. if i got anything wrong, oh well. it be like that sometimes.
Kenna stares down at the tankard clasped in her hand, her brow drawn. Val had left for Zenobia’s castle hours ago, scowling and fidgeting with her skirts. As confident as she had been when she saw her off, Kenna finds herself second guessing the plan. Val is a mercenary, not a spy. What if she is discovered? What would happen to her then?
“You need not worry so much, Kenna Rys of Stormholt,” comes a voice from behind Kenna, pulling her from her thoughts. “You should more have faith in your people.”
She turns to see the Adder of Lykos settle beside her on the bench. Adder crosses her arms on the table, the golden snake coiled around her bicep glinting under the light of the tavern’s torches. Her eyes, rimmed with kohl, gaze into her own, unflinching.
Kenna frowns. “I do have faith in Val,” she says. “I just... I’ve lost those I care deeply about before. I don’t wish to add to the count.” Adder stares at her before she turns away, chuckling under her breath. Kenna narrows her eyes. “What?”
“I don’t understand you,” she says. “You are a queen, aren’t you? Royalty?” The way Adder’s mouth curls around the word, as if she is biting back a snarl, makes it seem like a curse.
Kenna scowls. “I am,” she says, more defensive than she’d like. The title settles around her shoulders like dead weight; Kenna has yet to grow used to it. But she loathes it when people sneer at her, spitting the word at her feet. Making light of her rule, of her.
(In her mind, Gabriel purses his lips. Do not make your insecurities so obvious, my queen, he chides, lest your enemies notice and take advantage of it.)
(I know, Gabriel. I know.)
“Yet you care about those under your rule. Not as a monarch would their subject, but as if they were your friends.” Adder’s eyes return to Kenna’s, appraising her. “From what I’ve heard, Valentina is a mercenary. She’s not even from Stormholt. She should be disposable to you.”
“Val has been with me since before I defeated Marco and took back Stormholt. She has sworn herself to my service. She’s not disposable, and neither are any of my people.”
Adder looks surprised. “You mean that.”
She furrows her brow, frustrated. “Of course I do. Why would I lie?”
To her consternation, a smile plays upon the assassin’s lips. “Why indeed,” she murmurs. Then, louder, “I must confess, you intrigue me in a way not many have before, Queen of Stormholt.” Adder’s gaze dips low, to her chin, before flicking up once more. Kenna blinks. “I’m eager to see how history remembers you.”
Kenna opens her mouth to say something, though her mind is sluggish, blank, when a shadow falls over their table. Raydan. “Kenna, I---” he cuts himself off, taking in the sight before him. “Ah. Am I... interrupting anything?”
Adder’s features harden, her eyes turning into slits, before she visibly composes herself. “You are, actually,” she says. “But seeing as you’re already here, go on.”
Raydan’s gaze flickers to the floor of the tavern, but that is his only outward reaction to his sister’s words. “I was keeping watch of the castle when I noticed a yellow scarf hanging outside the window.”
“Val,” Kenna says, perking up. “She must have information.” The worry in her chest dissipates a little.
Adder gets up from the bench in one smooth, graceful movement. “You should see what your mercenary has for you, then. My work is done.” She walks out of the tavern. Raydan sighs and follows after her. Only Kenna stays where she is. She stares at the assassin’s back, lingering on the daggers resting at her hips.
Kenna thinks back to when she met with the Adder of Lykos a second time, after the party, to return the poison fang. She recalls the way the woman’s touch lingered as she took it from her. Raydan’s words echo in her mind. She must like you.
A chill runs down Kenna’s back, as if a finger was tracing a line down her spine. No, as if a dagger was, making blood rush to the surface and leaving poison in its wake.
Kenna shakes her head as she walks out the tavern, trying to set aside what transpired inside. She must defeat Luther, and to do that, she needs to keep a clear head. And that requires not thinking about a woman who deals with secrets and poison.

The Lykel Clan. Consist of Lycan Enforcer (second in command of the Enforcers) Bastien Lykel, and his two half-ling children Adder and Raydan. Both have different mothers. While Raydan is a Lycan-Warlock halfling, Adder is a rare Lycan-Vampire halfling.
The relationship between Bastien and his children is strained. Unkind words were shouted in the heat of the moment and both children are unable to forgive him.
When off duty, Bastien Lykel spends most of his time trying to apologize to his children and constantly bail them out of lockup.

A breath of relief - Kenna and Raydan fanfic
Summery: Only half a year has had passed since the ending of the war. The five kingdoms are still learning how to cope with each other, and they’re quite successful. The problems come, from within. Some advisers of Kenna aren’t very happy with her choice of marriage, some other groups can’t accept that the Nevrakis have risen to power again…And when both issues collide, Kenna is wary this isn’t the best timing for her to reveal a new, exciting discovery. Raydan solves both problems and proves what Kenna had already known - he can handle it, and she has nothing to worry about. Author’s note: Anon requested this fanfic a while ago, sorry for making you wait for so long! I found it harder to find how will Raydan prove himself to the noble families that didn’t trust him, but eventually it just came to me. I hope you’ll enjoy it!
“This is a brilliant idea!” one of Kenna’s advisers exclaimed, he was mesmerized by a new political suggestion Kenna just mentioned. “Why, thank you. It was actually my husband who suggested that.” Kenna wore a proud smile, who quickly faded away when the adviser in front of her scoffed uncomfortably at the collar of his shirt. “Ah, I see. King Raydan really out-did himself this time.” he told her. “Not really. He always has great suggestions, It’s just happens to be me who passes it on.” Kenna said, wearing a serious expression, and standing up. She saw her husband in the doorway. “This meeting is over.” She told the young noble-man, who she now was angry to call her adviser to. He quickly stood up, bowed to her, and disappeared. “Love, It’s fine. You don’t have to do that each time.” Raydan assured her, getting closer. Kenna sighed heavily. They were married for half a year now, and while most of the kingdom was glad to have her and Raydan as their rulers, it was particularly the noble families and her so-called advisers who had a problem with her choice of partner in marriage. “But it WAS your idea.” She said, pouting.  “Let them think whatever they want to think. It’s the least of our problems.” He caressed her face and kissed her forehead. She couldn’t suppress a smile. “I know…” She sighed again, this time more calmly. They still had so much to do, and everything felt new to them. While Kenna was preparing for this her whole life, being queen was something you can’t really prepare to until you’re already there. And Raydan wasn’t prepared to life at court in his life, but it seemed to come easily to him. It was a shame people didn’t see it that way. It was a shame they were blinded by his past and judged him for the ‘street-rat’ he used to be. Kenna was furious with them, but Raydan always assured her it’ll be fine. They’ll come around, he said, and she always nodded and listened.
But now, Kenna had missed her cycle. And with the rate she and Raydan were… getting intimate, it could mean she was with child. It could also mean nothing. Maybe it was all the pressure and stress they were under, but Kenna had a feeling it wasn’t that. And she was glad, oh, she was ecstatic. But also… wary. If the noble families and people didn’t accept Raydan as their king, how could she step down for a while while she’s pregnant? She knew Raydan was up to the job, but the people needed to believe that too. She knew Raydan won over many of their subjects already, being involved with getting a lot of families back to their feet and rebuilding the kingdom to its former glory, but it seemed no matter what he did, the noble families batted their eyes at him. She didn’t tell Raydan, yet. She wanted to be sure, before delivering such news. Speaking of news, He probably should’ve had news for her. “So?” She finally asked, he knew immediately what she was talking about. “We need to call a strategic meeting, asp. We should inform king Diavolos as well, and Adder.” his expression was uneasy, and Kenna knew this was serious matter. She nodded and called a near-by messenger.  “How was your mission, besides that?” She asked, placing a hand over his chest. While he was wearing his royal robes right now, Kenna could see in her mind his scarred flesh, and traced his skin where they should be, under his clothes. “Not even a scratch.” He announced her with a smile. “My hero.” Kenna played along, but really, she was glad. She hated when he got out for missions, but it was inevitable. With the intel they got, and what could be on the line, they needed their best on the field. And while Raydan resigned from being her spymaster, or a member of the black asps, he was still the best out there. Their worries came true, with what Raydan has discovered. They started the strategic meeting first thing in the morning. Word was sent out to Abanthus, to warn Diavolos, Zenobia, and inform Adder of their current situation. There was an uprising group of former warriors that was gathering in Stormholt’s further lands, who despised the Nevrakis and wanted to end their rule, once and for all. There were trained assassins among them, and they went un-noticed by both Stormholt’s army and the Black Asps. They first got word of them from Dom, who traveled a lot as a part of his new job as ambassador of the the Fire Tribe, and noticed a small group acting strange and whispering of treason. Raydan followed the faint lead, and found out their true motives. “This is Abanthus problem, not ours.” Cornelius, one of the advisers, said. He wasn’t the oldest of them, but he was one of the most heard. Somehow, everyone seemed to listen to him, and he had quite the opinions. A few other nobleman agreed with him, siding their opinions with him. “Enough!” Raydan had stood up, banging his fists against the table. Everyone watched him with a shocked expression, even Kenna. “This is exactly the kind of thinking that’ll lead us into war, once again. They are talking of killing the rules of a Kingdom, for god sake’s, need I really remind you what happened last time someone plotted to murder a queen or a king?” his voice was stern, and finally they listened. Kenna was glad someone finally shut Cornelius up. And while Raydan said his 'enough' for them to stop suggesting stupid ideas like letting Abanthus handle this on their own, for Kenna it felt like it would finally make those nobleman see him for who he really is. For the man worth to be their king, even though they refused to admit that. “Because I think king Amanth or queen Adriana will have to disagree with you. Or maybe you should ask Ewan and Daphne Thorn.” Raydan knows this is a delicate subject, but he goes there anyway. It had come to this, only because they refuse to listen to him, when he speaks to them any other way. He needed to shake them out of their comfort zone. Desperate times called for desperate measures. They think years of observing from the shadows made him weaker, invisible, transparent. but it’s the opposite, really. He got a great diplomatic instinct, and had a hunch for strategic actions because he was a spy, a ‘street-rat’ as the like reminding, when no one can ‘see’ them. Kenna listens carefully as he speaks. in fact, they all do. “This will affect all of us,” Raydan says, collectedly now, motioning with his hands around him.  “You really think they’d stop there? Let’s say they succeed in their mission, this will bring chaos to Abanthus and to the peace we have forged. They will not stop there, people like that seek power, and chaos. They’ll start another war. And who put Nevrakis back to power? that’s right. They’ll come for Kenna, next. And this is something I will never allow. I don’t know if it’s your ignorance, or maybe you agree with them over the Nevrakis family’s rule, but this is not the right way, and I won’t have it.” Raydan is done with his speech, and everyone is taken aback. Slowly, many nobleman start nodding, agreeing with him. Soon, Cornelius is left all alone, in the lane of the opponents. “Well,” all the other advisers are looking at him. “I guess so.” He nods too. “Then, It’s settled,” Kenna stands up, a huge and proud smile spread across her face. “We shou-” She starts saying, when a sudden wave of nausea hits her, and she clenches to her stomach. “Excuse me.” She lets out before running out of the meeting room, and to the nearest bath chambers. She empties anything she’d eaten that they into a bucket, and wipes her mouth clean. “Ugh… In the worst timing possible.” She scolds at herself, and then opens the door. Raydan is waiting for her there, a worried look in his eyes. “Kenna,” He rushes to her side. She’s a little dizzy, so she’s thankful for having him there to support her. “Are you okay? Call a healer! immediately!” he orders to a passing servant. “I’m fine…” She dismisses him. “It’s not that.” She holds back a smile. She guesses she was right, and maybe they’re expecting a… baby. Now she can’t hold back her smile, and he watches her puzzled. He then shakes his head. “Even if it’s only a false alarm, I wan’t you to get checked. Take care of yourself, i’ll finish that meeting. would that be okay?” He asks her, and Kenna watches her husband in awe. “Yes. It’d be perfect.” she nods. A healer finds them, and Kenna has to insist Raydan doesn’t have to accompany them, until he gives in and agrees. The healer accompanies Kenna to Madeline, the technocrat that aided Dom. She was visiting right now, teaching a new medical procedure. “queen Kenna, always a pleasure seeing you around!” The old lady called her way. Kenna smiled at her, and Madeline watched as the healer motioned to Kenna. “Oh, I see.” Madeline turned to the group that was listening to her. “Practice on what we went through until now. We’ll resume shortly.” And took Kenna’s hand, leading her into a different, more private room. After checking her up, and asking Kenna a few questions, Madeline confirmed, she was indeed pregnant. “I guess he already knew why you were coming in for, if he left you for my care,” Madeline joked and winked as she collected a few medical herbs. “These would be good for the baby,” She gave her one portion. “And these would help you relax. You should take it easy, and make sure to check in with the healers. But other than that, there’s nothing out of the ordinary with your pregnancy. Vomiting is entirely normal, and cravings are, too. Try not to eat anything that smells weird to you, even if you used to like it before. Your body is telling you everything you’ll need to know.” Madeline explained everything to Kenna, and even answered a few questions of her own. “Are you still feeling any nausea? sickness? any weakness at all?” Madeline asks before opening the door for Kenna. “No. I’m fine. Feeling better already.” Kenna thanked her, and was about to exit the infirmary when Raydan came in. “Oh, thank god. I’m sorry I missed it. Is she okay?” He immediately asked in Madeline and the healer’s direction, while placing a hand over Kenna’s back. “She’s perfectly fine. I’d recommend bringing her tea and rubbing her back. Doctor’s orders.” Madeline winks again, and resumes to her teachings. Raydan sighs in relief, and both exit the clinic. “See? I told you you had nothing to worry about.” Kenna shrugged, as if she didn’t give him any reason to worry. “How did the rest of the meeting go?” She changed the subject, and Raydan watched her in suspicion. They sat in their garden, a servant brought them their tea.  “It went as expected. There was a little tension in the air, but ultimately, they all agreed. We sent another word for Abanthus, and got reply. I had a slight disagreement with Adder, who urged us that The Black Asps couldn’t have missed such a thing, but I convinced her there’s no mistake here. We’re preparing our finest soldiers and theirs at this moment, and they’ll move tomorrow. Our main goal is to capture them, bring them to trial and possibly lock them behind bars. No casualties needed.” He updated her. There were more things discussed, both in the meeting and with Abanthus, but Raydan summed up for her the important parts. “Not that any of that concerns you.” Raydan finished with that. “Excuse me? What do you mean?” She asked, playing ‘offended’. “You were prescripted relaxation and massaging. So I’m just following my orders.” he shrugged, and got behind her, starting to rub her back. His hands worked magic on her back, and Kenna muffled a moan. “Now, do you want to tell me what’s this about?” He whispered in her ear, Kenna almost broke apart in his arms. “Right.” She reminded herself, taking her cup and sipping her tea. Raydan continued to release knots in her back. “Well, I didn’t want to tell you until I was sure…” She bite at her lip. Raydan stopped for a second, and she turned to face him. “I’m… with child. We’re expecting a child.” She finally said, out loud. It felt amazing, to be able to say it, to know she was going to have child with the love of her life, with Raydan. “Oh my god!” He took her into his arms, got up, and lifted her in the air. He beamed like the sun, and Kenna knew he was as happy as she was. “Are you sure? I’m going to be…” Raydan almost couldn’t believe. “A father, yes!” Kenna finished his sentence for him, and he smiled even wider, not knowing how this was possible. He kissed her deeply, finally putting her back down into the ground, and she pulled at his shirt to make sure he won’t go anywhere. When they went to bed that night, Raydan fell asleep with his head on her shoulder, and a hand over her stomach. While she still didn’t have a baby bump, he already was excited for it. He stroked her hair for a while, before falling asleep, whispering sweet things in her ears. She laid in bed, excited too, almost too excited to fall alseep, if she hadn’t been so worn-out. But, before drifting away, she thought how glad she was. How happy, and proud, and certain of her future. While there were serious matters to attend to, and she still had a say in things (She’ll always have), she could lay back and let Raydan handle it if she needed. She knew being pregnant would have a strain over her queenly duties, but she had her husband to take over for her and it was a blessing. He was Stormholt’s king just as much as she was it’s queen. And finally everyone saw it just like she did. The next months held a new journey for both of them, but she couldn’t be prouder of the man walking that path with her, of her king, of the father of her yet to be born child. And we that, she fell asleep, in the arms on her loved one, Raydan.
