Whitney, with her distinctive big brown deer eyes, has become a trending topic, as social media platforms buzz with discussions about her potential to step into the iconic role. Known for her penchant for capturing moments on set, Whitney's Instagram feed is a testament to her love for photography and provides a behind-the-scenes glimpse into her life as an actress.
A quick Google search unveils the dichotomy of opinions surrounding Whitney Winters. Fans laud her as "genuine," appreciating her authenticity, while internet trolls dub her as "feisty," perhaps a testament to her fearless approach to both her career and public image. In a recent Variety interview, Whitney opens up about her journey, revealing a vulnerable side as she shares her previous aversion to the sound of her own voice on tape, providing fans with a deeper understanding of the actress behind the roles.
Before gracing the reboot of "One Tree Hill," Whitney carved her path in the entertainment industry with notable roles in both television and film. From her portrayal of Emma Chota in "Red Band Society" (2014-2015) to the compelling character Summer Newman in "The Young and the Restless" (2013-2017, 2018-2020), Whitney has showcased her versatility in the realm of soap operas and teen dramas.
On the big screen, Whitney delivered a memorable performance as Penny Lane in "Almost Famous" (2011), proving her prowess in bringing depth and nuance to her cinematic endeavors.
As Whitney Winters takes on the challenge of reviving a beloved character in the "One Tree Hill" reboot, audiences can expect an enthralling mix of talent, charm, and a genuine passion for storytelling from this rising star.
Whitney's upbringing has been a tapestry woven with the threads of privilege and sophistication. Attending elite private schools and socializing within exclusive circles, she has effortlessly embraced the expectations that come with being a Winters. From lavish galas to cultural soirées, Whitney navigates high society with grace, carrying the legacy of her family name with dignity.
The Winters family fortune, built over generations, stems from astute business ventures, investments, and a keen eye for opportunities. Their financial empire spans various industries, mirroring the diverse talents within the family. With business moguls and influential figures in their lineage, the Winters family has left an indelible mark on both the corporate and social landscapes.
Despite the legacy of wealth, Whitney Winters is determined to carve her own path in the entertainment industry, proving that she is more than just a beneficiary of her family's affluence. While the Winters name opens doors, Whitney's talent, ambition, and dedication to her craft are what truly set her apart in the world of Hollywood.
'ᶜᵃᵘˢᵉ ᴵ ᶠᵉᵉˡ ˡᶤᵏᵉ ᴵ'ᵐ ᵗʰᵉ ʷᵒʳˢᵗ ˢᵒ ᴵ ᵃˡᵃʸˢ ᵃᶜᵗ ˡᶤᵏᵉ ᴵ'ᵐ ᵗʰᵉ ᵇᵉˢᵗ
The seeds of Whitney's eating disorder were sown in the early days of her career when the demands of the industry collided with the relentless pursuit of an idealized body image. The pressure to conform to Hollywood's beauty standards, magnified by the scrutiny of the public eye, led Whitney down a perilous path.
To the outside world, Whitney appears flawless—a vision of beauty and elegance. Yet, behind closed doors, her life becomes a dance of meticulous calorie counting, grueling workout regimens, and a constant battle with the numbers on the scale. The pursuit of perfection becomes an unrelenting force, driving her to extremes to maintain the image that the industry demands.
Fearful of the judgment that might accompany vulnerability, Whitney buries her struggle deep within, keeping her eating disorder hidden from friends, family, and even her closest confidantes. The isolation intensifies, and the burden of secrecy grows heavier with each passing day.
Whitney's disorder takes on a life of its own, weaving a vicious cycle of guilt, shame, and fleeting moments of perceived control. The industry's insatiable appetite for physical perfection becomes the battleground where Whitney fights her silent war, unknowingly contributing to the perpetuation of a toxic cycle.
As Whitney rises higher in the echelons of fame, the toll of her eating disorder becomes increasingly evident. Frailty replaces the strength she once exuded, and the sparkle in her eyes dims. The facade begins to crack, prompting whispers within the industry and speculation among her devoted fan base.
WANTED CONNECTIONS.
all the connections pls.
squad. best friends. her platonic soulmates
the oth girl gang
the one that got away
mutual pinning
fwb / ex, like they claim to have moved on but hook up everytime they see each other and can't stop. lowkey a toxic relationship like so fucked up but its a good kind of hurt
okay but would it not be hilarious if the actor cast as Nathan can’t stand her for whatever reason and they have to act all lovey dovey on screen for however many seasons + maybe they hooked up before even auditioning and whitney like stomped all over his heart
Friend of convenience. They are seen taking pics all over social media and at various events but are lukewarm to each other at best when not in public
A very Lauren Conrad/Heidi Montag type of relationship. They used to be best friends and had a major falling out and now even hearing that they will be in the same room together causes whispers
Unrequited Crush/Secret Admirer
Longtime Childhood Friend

Grey’s Anatomy Exits Ranked From Best to Worst
Addison Montgomery: She rode off into the Californian sunset. She found fulfilling work at a thriving practice, made wonderful friends and founded a beautiful family with the love of her life. Private Practice was a fantastic show, because it stood really well on its own, but gave us a great crossover episode every once in a while.
Cristina Yang: She stayed true to herself, seeking out opportunities to learn and grow as a surgeon in a state of the art cardiac research facility in Switzerland. She said her heartfelt goodbyes, before dancing it out with her ‘person’ one last time.
Preston Burke: He did ground-breaking work in Zurich. He mended fences with Cristina, before choosing to spend time with his loving family.
Nathan Riggs: He found happiness in Malibu with his long-lost fiancé and her beloved little boy.
Stephanie Edwards: She literally left Seattle in a blaze of glory, having saved that little girl’s life during the fire. I hope she is fully recovered, traveling the world like she wanted.
Erica Hahn: She stood by her principles, protesting Izzy’s theft of a donor heart for Denny. I hope she is out there somewhere, doing groundbreaking surgery alongside a lovely lesbian.
Callie Torres & Arizona Robbins: Arizona prioritised her daughter’s needs in moving cross country so she could be with her Mama in a show of successful co-parenting. Though Callie’s original exit (in pursuit of Penny) was regrettable, a simple text was enough to rekindle the Calzona flame.
Derek Shepherd: His death was untimely, but it allow Derek and Meredith’s eternal love to live on. He left his wife one final gift, in the form of their daughter, Ellis.
George O’Malley: His death was suddden and tragic, like many in the real world. Perhaps George was taken too soon. Perhaps it would have been more realistic if he died in the line of duty while serving in the military, but you can’t deny that his final elevator scene was iconic.
Reed Adamson & Charles Percy: Frankly, I never developed an attachment to either of these residents, who came to the hospital after Seattle Grace was merged with Mercy West. However, no matter who you are or what you’ve done, a mass shooting is not a nice way to go.
Leah Murphy & Shane Ross: Some crack under the pressure of surgical residency and some are home wreckers. It was lucky they weren’t killed off in a bid to appease outraged Crowen/Calzona fans.
Izzie Stevens: I think it might have been somewhat neater and/or more realistic if Izzie had died of cancer as originally planned. I started watching the series in Season 7, before eventually binging all previous episodes, so Katherine Heigl has never really had a special place in my heart. But I’m still glad she got to have kids, live happily on a farm in Kansas.
Heather Brooks: Electrocution was a horrible way to go, but at least she died while trying to save the beloved Richard Webber.
April Kepner: I’m a huge Japril fan, but no matter how you feel about April and Matthew as a couple, she deserves to be happy. It is some consolation that she is alive and well in Washington, so perhaps all hope is not lost for her and Avery.
Lexie Grey & Mark Sloane: Their death was terribly sad and anything but the happily ever after Slexie deserved. I’m forever bitter that Lexie didn’t just take a research year in New York. Sloane could have realised his true feelings and followed her there to propose. Eventually, they would both find permanent work and decide that NY was the best place to raise their kids. This would have made Callie’s decision to move to New York a lot more sensible for Sofia. It might have been tricky to manage Meredith’s relationship with Lexie off-screen, but why not, if they did so for her best friend? I’m sure the fans would have played along. Either way, the plane crash was a little far-fetched.
Alex Karev: I’m aware that the writers did not have a lot of time, but Justin’s exist storyline was quite poor. It’s not so much a question of why, but how. It’s understandable that Alex would want to be with his kids. Maybe there was a possibility that he would have fallen back in love with Izzie over time. But for him to ghost his wife for 6 weeks after they have only just renewed their vows? For him to explain himself in a letter containing divorce papers? To leave his best friend, his second family and the woman who has been left heartbroken by any family member she has ever known? That meant destroying 16 seasons worth of character development in one foul swoop. No, these are not the actions of Alex Karev. He should have invited Jo to Kansas to meet the kids. They would have tried to make it work, even as his love for Izzie grew. Then perhaps he would have been the one receiving a goodbye letter, as Jo set him free to be with his family before returning to Seattle. Later, Zola, Bailey and Emilia could visit the farm with Meredith, only to come back to the hospital, full of excitement at having made friends with Alexis and Eli.
I wish Justin every health and happiness in his future endeavours. It seems there is a lot going on behind-the-scenes. It can’t have been an easy decision to go, but sometimes you have to do what’s right for you.

Seriously Kurin replied, “I have one hundred and fifty seven complaints of violation behavior that were serious enough to be written on parchment and given to me.”
“I would expect no less from the crew of the Grandalor,” sneered Master Juris.
Kurin looked at him with a disturbing compassion and said, “Not one is from a Grandalor crewman.  Twenty two were given to me by Captain Sarfin, who relayed them to me in his capacity as head of the Captain’s Council. Fourteen were given to me by Master Addison the Secretary of the Fleet Craft Council and the balance came from individual booth keepers and the Pursers of all twenty eight ships that you spent time on during the Gathering.”
She cocked her head and regarded him carefully for a moment.  “All of these people want to see how this Wergeld thing will work out in our fleet.  They are thinking of adopting it as an alternate to law courts.  The only thing that kept me from filing a slander case against you was that it would have destroyed the Wergeld and a ship that I am very fond of.”
“Then why did you leave us, if you are so fond of us?” Master Juris asked in genuine puzzlement, finally reaching towards one of the cores of his hurt feelings and looking for an answer.
Kurin came near to tears remembering the incident.  There were times that having a Dragon’s Memory was a curse.  “I had no choice.  Captain Sarfin was writing your execution order for threatening an officer of the court.  By leaving, I changed his tack and distracted him long enough to cover you in the Wergeld.
“I have been around you long enough to know that you were just being mean because I’d made you feel foolish about some of your testimony.  You still run the best boat shop in the fleet and I hoped that you’d come about and be my friend again.  Instead, you seem to be dealing with me with the same kind of life long hate that you turned against Silor.”
“Craft Council members complained of me?  Fellow Masters?” Juris said plaintively.
“I brought the entire lot with me,” Kurin said, shaking her head. “Just to be safe, these are attested true copies.  The originals are still on the Grandalor.”
“What did you expect of us?” asked Mistress Daeron, shocked at the implication that they might destroy original documents as important as these.
Kurin was fishing in one of her bags as she responded, “After you sailed three hours early and without me, I had no idea what to expect.  It seemed like you were all gone onto dry land.  At that point, I could have simply filed a full violation, as Captain Sarfin and Master Addison both urged me to do.  I resisted that because I had to know what really happened and Blind Mecat sent Dari to ask me to try to save you.”  She produced a bulky package of paper fish parchment and handed it over to Alor.
As Alor’s aged hands reached for the complaints they were shaking for the first time in Kurin’s eidetic memory.  Alor began to look through the stack and said in a small voice, “These are very well organized, Kurin.”  She sorted off groups of parchment leaves and began handing them about the Council.  In an empty voice she said, “We will get through these quicker if everybody helps.  I fear that the Longin’s existence is near to it’s end.  How can we survive this, Kurin?”
Kurin had a prompt answer.  “We work to resolve the underlaying problem.  As the Grandalor’s sole owner, I have to file the complaint.  I don’t want to do that. There is something that I do want to have answered though, and it is not addressed in this parchment work.”
Master Juris tugged gently at her sleeve with his bandaged hand and leaned close to whisper, “Did you mean that about me running the best boat shop in the fleet?  After all of this,” he gestured at the array of parchment being passed about the room, “you can say that?”
Kurin looked him straight in the eye and said judiciously, “Sure.  It’s the truth.  Even if you are hard to get along with sometimes, nobody is better at organizing the work of others.  Your shop always keeps everybody busy and brings all the work together exactly when and where it’s needed.  What organizational skills I have, I owe to you.”
Master Cerde, of the weaving shop looked up, puzzled.  “Master Juris, every one of these complaints names you, yet Kurin says that what she wants to know is not here.” He shifted his gaze to Kurin and added, “What else do you need? There’s enough here to sink us a hundred times over.”
Kurin was in tears as she asked, “Up north, in the Dragon Sea, Captain Tanlin brought something up during the investigation but other things sidetracked it.  I never had a chance to ask again until now.  Why, if you were all so proud of me, didn’t anybody just love me?  Why did I go six Gatherings with almost no hugs?  Didn’t anybody care?”  She hugged her arms close and High Cloud anxiously preened her hair and stroked along her jaw with his beak.
Clard, Master of Drums, finally broke the embarrassed silence.  He said one word.  “Fear.”
Kurin looked at him in amazed scorn and said, “Of a child?”
Baring his arm and showing four long scars, Master Clard answered, “No, not the child.  The mother.”  He looked about the mess for confirmation and Kurin saw heads nod all about the room.
“Kurin, do you know how far onto dry land your mother is?”
She shook her head and said, “She sits and stares.  If she is told to do a simple task, sometimes she does it.  Otherwise she is non-responsive.”
Master Clard nodded and replied carefully, “And guarded.  Guarded at every moment of the day and night.  Lissa is far more responsive than you know.  She can and does hear and see.  Those tasks that she is given never let her near to any sharp thing.  She tracks you like a Strong Skin following blood in the water.
“You are old enough now to know what we have shielded you from.  Since your father died, your mother Lissa has blamed you for his death because you found his body in his hammock.  You know that.  What we hid was simply this.  Ever since that time, for six Gatherings, she tried to kill you or attack any person who showed the slightest affection toward you.  After she did this to my arm, we have forced her to have her finger and toe nails trimmed as short as possible.  This is why she is under continuous guard.”
Mistress Daeron said, “Kurin, do you remember that I gave you a hug when you showed us the new charting system?  I paid for it.”  She turned and lifted the hair behind her right ear.  There was a jagged scar plain to see.
All around the tables others chimed in with their stories.  The weaving shop, where Kurin had played and learned to weave had been vandalized.  Even Master Juris had his tale to tell.
He held up his bandaged arm. “Just about where you got me with your knife, I bore Lissa’s teeth marks for months from keeping her out of the shop.  It healed without a scar but I’d rather go up into rigging during a Coriolis Storm than try to subdue your mother single handed again.  There’s a reason that watching her is a punishment detail for the deckhands.”
Alor looked beseechingly at Kurin.  “What else could we do?  No other ship will take her. Lissa is insane.  She’s not responsible.  All that we can do keep her under guard and hope that some day she can relaunch herself into safe water again.”
Captain Mord said softly, “We do love you, Kurin.  Why do you think that everyone was so angry and upset when you didn’t show up for your party?”
Kurin shot a hard look at Master Juris, who shrank under her gaze and with little grace said, “I’m sorry about that.”
Tartly, Alor shot back, “But not sorry enough to pay Kurin back for the losses that you have caused.  As I recall it, we had to sort out the Grandalor’s actual ship-time value during that sorry mess up in the Dragon Sea and it was more like sixty three skins, eight and a half blocks per ship-day.  Kurin knows that and tried to let you off with only fifty skins.”

Back to the Start (Thomas’s Journal)
*This is technically Faux Pas Part Seven, but it’s more of a standalone story
Part One: Long Distance Part Five
Part Two: (Not so) Long Distance
Part Three: Emphatically, No
Part Four: L.A. Baby (Where Dreams are Made of to be broken)
Part Five: (I’m Sorry I Can’t Be) Perfect
Part Six: I’d Do Anything
* * * The Art of Loving Thomas Hunt Fan Fiction Masterlist * * *
– – –
Characters: Alex (MC), Thomas Hunt Mentioned Characters: Marianne Delacroix, Bianca Stone, Matt Rodriguez, Chris Winters
Setting: This takes place between Red Carpet Diaries Book 2 and 3 (Red Carpet Diaries 2.5).  However, the majority of the content recaps RCD Books 1 and 2 from Thomas POV. In my fanfiction writing, this takes place immediately after Faux Pas Part 6. Previously, Bianca Stone shared part of Thomas’s private journal about his feelings about Marianne Delacroix. Thomas also agreed to model for Faux Pas with Alex for Addison’s photoshoot despite not initially wanting to.
Rating: PG-13
– – –
Thomas sat down beside Alex on the couch, wrapping his arm around her. Alex let him pull her into his chest.
“Thank you again,” Alex lifted her head to place a kiss on his lips.
“It was my pleasure,” Thomas kissed her again.
“Can we put all of this behind us?” Alex suggested.
“Agreed. However, before we do...” Thomas began hesitantly. He took a deep breath. “Since Miss Stone was kind enough to share what I had written about Marianne, I thought perhaps you might want to see what I’ve written about you.”
Thomas held out a black journal. It had several pages flagged.
“Thomas, you don’t have to,” Alex offered.
“I want to,” Thomas insisted, putting the journal in Alex’s hands.
Alex leaned into Thomas’s arms and opened to the first flagged page.
[Hello, Hollywood]
Today, I went to another insipid Hollywood party. The meaningless blather of conversations at these affairs is irritating. Finding someone to have an actual conversation with proved impossible. Perhaps the most interesting thing of note was a party crasher. I commend her risk to network–she seemed to handle herself with unexpected grace. Unfortunately for her, this town is filled with other naive, beautiful Hollywood hopefuls.
[The Big Premiere]
Rarely am I stirred by current Hollywood indie films, tonight I witnessed a rare break in the drivel of underwhelming attempts at true art. Tender Nothings was not terrible. That is to say, it was quite good. The film owes its success to a newcomer, Alex Spencer. I was pleasantly surprised by not only her raw talent but her charm and decorum. I had the privilege of speaking with her at Matt Rodriguez’s party. Alex has mastered the Hollywood charm offensive, even if she insists she is just being honest. I hope to work with her in the future. I find her talent magnetizing. I’m drawn to her and I’m not sure why that is. She’s like a lightning bolt–she’s completely compelling.
[Leveling Up]
I do not believe in fate, and yet, it seems Alex and I continue to cross paths when I least expect it. A potential client failed to show up despite insisting we meet at this abhorrent excuse for a public venue. Forget the music, they used bagged ice; how artless? As I thought the night was a total loss, I found Alex in the cacophony of sounds and lights. She continues to bewilder me. She willingly left her friends and the party at hand to accompany me to Noir Bar. Alex talks with maturity and dignity beyond her years; and yet, she has a way of–how do I put it–teasing me in a manner to which I am not accustomed. I offered Alex the part of the Duchess; unfortunately, she is attached to another film. This, of course, is disappointing; however, that is not to say the evening was disappointing. I quite enjoyed myself.
[Fired-storm + Take Two]
The Last Duchess has been stuck in a state of uncertainty for a few weeks now. I have not found anyone who could portray Frances with all the nuances the performance requires. It is with conflicting emotions that I finally have my Duchess. I somehow found my way to Alex again. I was pleased by her enthusiasm and interest in the role, although I abhor the reason for which she was let go from her prior engagement. Even sitting across from here, I felt fire run through my veins as she told me what Viktor tried to do to her. I knew he was vile, but this was different. I had never felt so much hatred before; even with everything that happened between Viktor and me.
As I sat with Alex and saw the light of passion in her eyes, I knew it was fate. I finally realized why I couldn’t cast the Duchess. It was always Alex. She is everything I admire in Frances. I know she will bring undeniable life to the role. Nevertheless, Alex is also dangerous. I’m drawn to her in a way I haven’t been in a long time. I almost kissed her. I wanted to. But after Viktor, I can’t. I will protect her, even if that means from myself.
I gave Alex a day to think about my offer before returning for her reply. I did need her answer readily, but the truth is, I couldn’t stay away from her.
[The Underdogs]
Today was the first day of production for The Last Duchess. I wanted to film a few test scenes to provide potential producers and investors in hopes of securing funding. Alex and Chris were impeccable even on their first attempt. I hope the investor we are meeting with tomorrow sees the potential of this film.
As the title character of the film, it was natural to ask Alex to accompany me on the trip to San Franciso. I expected that eventually, I would discover something about Alex that would help quell the distraction she has become to me. The trip had an adverse effect. Alex continues to demonstrate she is a capable woman in all regards. I took her to a few of my favorite places. She genuinely appreciated them all. When I showed her all of San Francisco from Twin Peaks, she asked where I lived. Maybe it was the memories that filled my head when she asked about my former house, but I was pulled toward her. I didn’t want to stop. The way she looked in the moonlight. She was exquisite. Her hand on my jaw was electric. I could feel it radiate through my whole body. It was just the shock I needed to remind me of everything I could lose if I had let myself continue.
[I'll Take The High Road]
Production of the Last Duchess headed to Cordonia. Alex continued to overwhelm my thoughts. I offered her an extra seat on the plane. If she had brought someone else, then I could let the thought of her go. I want her to be happy, even if that is with someone else. Regardless, she declined. I smiled when she turned down the offer.
On the set Chris–for all his talents–had difficulty today exuding the right mix of restrained desire and infinite decorum the scene required. I offered to demonstrate what I was looking for. I have done this countless times on prior films, and yet, this time it was different. I ran the scene with Alex– the anticipation and intensity were palpable. I am hopelessly at her mercy.
[Happily Ever After...Right?]
The Last Duchess was complete and yet, I felt compelled to head to the studio to attempt to make it even better. As if I were not distracted enough by the mere thought of Alex, fate decided yet again to test my resolve in acting on my desires for her. Alex drives me to distraction. She challenges me. I confessed my desire for her. Remarkably, she felt the same way. When we kissed, I felt contended. My thoughts were quiet for the first time in months. I relinquished my future to her, should she feel the same way as I.
The wrap party for The Last Duchess was an overwhelming success. The film received much praise and yet for the first time, the acclaim was distant. As to be expected by now, Alex captured my whole attention. She chose me. I might never understand why, but I will never stop trying to make her happy.
Apparently, Alex is a distraction I’m supposed to have. I can’t fight it anymore. I won’t.
As Alex continued flipping through the other entries, tears cascaded down her cheeks and flowed across her smile. She had not thought it possible to be more in love with Thomas than she already was, but she was wrong.
“I can’t believe...” Alex’s words got caught in her throat. She shifted until her lips were hovering over Thomas’s. “I love you, Thomas Hunt, more than I have ever loved anyone.”
“As do I, my Alex,” Thomas admitted.
Alex pressed her lips against Thomas’s. Alex kissed him long and slow. Thomas responded by pulling Alex further on top of him until she was straddling his lap. He ran his hands down her back and lower, eventually settling his hands in the back pocket of her pants. Alex smiled against his lips as Thomas squeezed her. His touch caused her body to quiver pleasantly in response.
Alex pulled away for a moment to catch her breath. “I noticed you did not include any specific details about the wrap party. Perhaps you need a refresher of the highlights from the evening?”
Thomas cupped his hands around Alex’s face. “How did that scene go again?" he teased.
Alex traced a finger up his arm. Her touch still sent shivers through his body; she smiled lightly. "I believe it started with desire," Alex whispered as she pressed her lips to his.
Thomas wrapped his arms around her and picked her up. Alex wrapped her legs around him. They passionately kissed their way over to a table in the corner. It wasn't a desk, but it would do. Thomas and Alex kissed fiercely as they let their memories of that first night overcome them.

Chicago Food Truck Fest, JUNE 23 – 24
Food trucks are intricately woven into American history. Starting with the Chuck wagon stemming from the “Father of the Texas Panhandle,” Charles Goodnight. In 1866, Goodnight, a cattle herder, realized the difficultly to cook proper meals during cattle drives. He took a sturdy old United States Army Wagon and constructed interior shelving and drawers. He then stocked the wagon with tableware and utensils, spices and medical supplies, including castor oil and quinine. The American Food Truck was born.
Food trucks today are eons away from the original Chuck wagons but one thing still remains. We still love food trucks! We realized the joy people received each day from eating from their favorite food truck. This lead us to create the Chicago Food Truck Festival continuing an world tradition.

#MyChicagoBookstore Adventures on Independent Bookstore Day, Part 2
By Elizabeth Harper
I got off at Roscoe and walked to RoscoeBooks. The place was packed. It’s a small neighborhood bookstore with a cozy children’s section. I started to look around and noticed they were featuring Claudine Rankine’s book Citizen. The lovely salesperson Jess came up and started chatting with me about it. Of course I’ve read it and recommend it highly. I read it on Kindle. But seeing the actual book is cooler because of the graphics and illustrations, so it might be going on my wish list. I mentioned that awhile back I had attended a discussion group about it at The Poetry Foundation. I asked where the poetry section was, and I also mentioned I was looking for books for early readers. She pointed out the poetry section. (I like to read on Kindle, except for poetry and plays, because sometimes the Kindle version messes up the line breaks and formatting.) We went over to their children’s section which is a really nice little nook, good for a neighborhood with families with young children who need manageable excursions. They have a shelf of books organized by reading level, which is extremely helpful. I picked out a Fancy Nancy book featuring her friendship with Bree. Then I went over to the poetry sections and A Doll for Throwing by Mary Jo Bang caught my eye, and I’m crazy about anything doll-related, and this also has a Bauhaus connection which is interesting to me, so I grabbed that thinking I better get it right away because I might not remember it later. As I was checking out, Jess mentioned Maggie Nelson to me who is also on my to-read wish list. I got my passport stamped and packed up my purchases and off I went to continue my adventures.
I walked to the Addison Brown Line stop and took that to the Western stop. The Book Cellar  (mentioned in this article) was just a short walk away and so crowded there was barely room to move without being in the way, so crowded I couldn’t look at everything. I wasn’t obligated to buy something at every store I visited. I could have just gotten my passport stamped. But I did find Philip Levine’s The Last Shift. I loved The Simple Truth when I read it decades ago. The poem “The Trade,” stays with me. There are some poems that do that. It ends with the line, “angelic, an ordinary man become a gift.” I read it in 1996 for a book discussion group that met at the Barnes and Noble that used to be on Diversey, a few storefronts west of the intersection of Clark and Broadway. I checked out, got a 10% discount as a perk for Independent Bookstore Day, and got my passport stamped.
Then I walked to Lawrence to take the #81 Lawrence bus. I got off at Ashland and walked north and then east to Clark to go to Women & Children First. Women & Children First has a special place in my heart. I remember going there in the early 1980s when I was a teenager and they were in a storefront near the intersection of Halsted and Armitage. I would buy Emma Goldman books, poetry books, Our Bodies, Ourselves, and many other classic feminist titles, such as Alison M. Jaggar’s Feminist Politics and Human Nature, there. I would go in and chat with the then owners, Linda Bubon and Ann Christopherson, about the feminist-influenced papers I was writing for school. This was before Amazon or online shopping or searching on the internet even existed. The way to discover books was to browse in bookstores. In the early 1990s I went with some fellow graduate students on what I called a “feminist field trip” to see Mary Daly speak at the location in Andersonville.
I found When My Brother Was an Aztec, which has been on my wish list, so I took finding it on the shelf as a sign I should get it. As I was checking out Xandria commented I made a good choice and told me about the VS podcast on the Poetry Foundation’s website, which I didn’t know to look for, but then I did find it and listened to it and was interested in it. That was an interaction and piece of information I wouldn’t have gotten if I had just bought the book on Amazon. It’s nice to see that the art of bookselling is not dead. (And the book has a poem called “The Last Mohave Indian Barbie” that I’m in love with, so that was worth the price of the book alone.)
Outside again, I caught the #22 Clark bus, thinking I needed to stop at home to rest, charge my phone, and get something to eat. The bus started to reroute after Grace, but it still got stuck and couldn’t move, so I got out and walked. The streets were flooded with Cubs fans I had to walk against to get home. So many people in the streets and in the bars. I had been feeling self-conscious about my poetry shopping spree. Usually I wouldn’t spend so much time and money on a shopping spree. I don’t usually go on shopping sprees at all. But how much do sports tickets cost? How much do poets make compared to people who play on professional sports teams? With all the people supporting sports and bars and sports bars, maybe it’s alright that I spent a little on books in bookstores. Maybe poetry needs its fans to give it some love and team spirit like those other sports get.
