Manuel Felguerez Mexican, born 1928 Entre dos almas (Between Two Souls), 1992 Oil on canvas Purchased with funds provided by the Ewing Halsell Foundation Photo Credit: Alice Lowe for the Texas Art Crawl. “Every plane contains potentially infinite volumes. Opt for one, and create a relief; color will also assume dimension. Then take the volume and develop it in space, demonstrate that the concept painting-relief-sculpture is obsolete, exhausted, that form-color is one within relative spaces”…….Manuel Felguerez Manuel Felguerez was born in 1928 in Zacatecas, Mexico. He moved to Mexico City to study sculpture at the Academia de San Carlos and La Esmeralda School of Art. He began exhibiting in the early 1950’s in Paris and Mexico City and continues to exhibit worldwide today. Felguerez has taught for many years at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and was also a visiting professor at Cornell University. In 1976, he was Visiting Researcher at Harvard University, where he collaborated with other scholars on the use of computers in design. He has been the recipient of numerous awards, including a Guggenheim grant. Entre dos almas is typical of many of Felguerez’s paintings from the early 1990’s in which he explores composition in two dimensions. His paintings include lyrical explorations of curved organic forms juxtaposed with geometric elements. The cool metallic gray background of this work is reminiscent of the high technology and computer elements which influenced Felguerez’s work in the late 1970’s. Felguerez’s paintings are closely related to many of his sculptural reliefs. Rat’s Pond: Abutting the picturesque patio at Rat’s Restaurant (named one of 100 most scenic restaurants in the US), is the Rat’s Pond. Approached from the sculpture park, guests first encounter a small cascading waterfall fed by the Pond, with a view that reveals the charming French-inspired restaurant and surrounding horticulture and sculpture, including Philip Grausman’s Leucantha and David Hostetler’s Summertime Lady. The pond, built in 1999, is home to a variety of colorful Koi fish, and an ideal environment for the water lilies, iris, and other plantings contained within the water. Notice also the countless colorful blooms planted near the patio as well as weeping willows and weeping cherry trees framing the far shoreline.   GROUNDS FOR SCULPTURE IS A MUSEUM, SCULPTURE GARDEN, AND ARBORETUM WHERE ART AND NATURE ARE ALWAYS AT PLAY.   Outdoors, nearly 300 contemporary sculptures are sited across 42 landscaped acres. Indoors, temporary exhibitions from established and emerging artists are featured in six galleries. Engaging and educational programs for all ages are offered year-round, and may include lectures from top minds, hands-on workshops, tours, concerts, and performances.   Grounds For Sculpture was founded by artist and philanthropist Seward Johnson. It opened in 1992 on the former New Jersey State Fairgrounds and was a natural extension of its predecessor, The Johnson Atelier. Hundreds of artists studied and produced work at the Atelier, and Johnson saw the potential of the neighboring bygone fairgrounds as a place where artwork could be sited within the landscape, and visitors could delight in discovering contemporary sculpture.   Photo Credit: Alice Lowe for the New Jersey Art Crawl   #ArtandDesignMatters #GroundsForSculpture #RatsPond #RatsRestaurant #KoiFish #KoiPond #VisitHamiltonNewJersey #VisitNewJersey #admMuseumSupport #admSupportsTheArts #LetsGoToTheMuseum #CultureTravel #CultureTraveler #CultureTrip #sculptureGarden #HamiltonNewJersey #NewJersey #awalkinthepark #admNewJerseyArtCrawl #fishpond #ColorfulKoiFish #artists   (at Grounds For Sculpture) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-VvW1UgB8v/?igshid=1xoxcoucgg0lk

Andy Warhol | Born Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States, 1928; died New York City, New York, United States, 1987 Silver Liz as Cleopatra, 1963 Photo Credit: Alice Lowe, 2014 Courtesy: Art Gallery of Ontario This painting features actress Elizabeth Taylor in the title role of Cleopatra, the highest grossing film of 1963. Warhol was obsessed with the idea of celebrity, and often depicted Hollywood stars in his works. Here the repetition of an image of the queen of the silver screen reads like a strip of film or a handful of cheap and fast photographs from a photo book. Warhol’s paintings bear no resemblance to any others in art history. His adaptation of the look and techniques of advertising art, including his use of silkscreening and startling vibrant color, created a style that was immediately recognizable and entirely his own. A Plantation Burial 1860; oil on canvas By John Antrobus, painter (1837-1907) In “A Plantation Burial”, John Antrobus attempts to capture the interior world of African Americans in Louisiana on the eve of the Civil War. The slave preacher and mourners take center stage, while the plantation master and mistress (at far right) and artist Antrobus (at far left; not in view) are relegated to the wings. Through differences in dress, Antrobus articulates a sense of cultural and social diversity among the mourners. Many wear white, frequently associated with Caribbean culture, while others appear in attire signifying their labor roles on the plantation. Phoenician Sarcophagus of a Youth 5th - 4th century B.C. Parian marble Gift of Lee and Joe Jamail on memory of Marie and Joseph D. Jamail; and of Caroline Wiess Law and of the Merrin Gallery, Inc. Throughout the ancient world, the artists of rich Phoenicia were renowned for their skills. They developed this unique coffin form for the burial of nobility, using the shape of an Egyptian sarcophagus but carved with a classic Greek face to represent the deceased. The most outstanding coffins were made of marble imported from the Greek island of Paros. There are about 83 Phoenician sarcophagi known in the world today, many in fragmented condition and some with provincial carving. There are only two others in the United States, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This sarcophagus is expertly carved in the Greek style, made of Parian marble that weighs over 2,000 pounds and stands 7 feet tall. It is an outstanding sculpture and a rich blend of two of the most important artistic traditions of antiquity, Egyptian and Greek. Julio Alpuy Uruguayan, 1919-2009 Constructivist View of Montevideo, 1957 Oil on burlap Purchased with funds from the Mary Kathryn Lynch Kurtz Fund for the Acquisition of Modern Latin American Art   Julio Alpuy was born in Tacuarembo, Uruguay. He studied at the Taller Torres-Garcia in Montevideo under its founder Joaquin Torres-Garcia, one of Latin America’s most important artists of the 20th century and the founder of Constructivism in Latin America. He became teacher-in-charge of the Taller from 1946-1951. Alpuy’s first one-man show was held in Buenos Aires in 1948. His work has been exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and many other important museums in the United States, Europe, and Latin America. Alpuy died in New York in 2009.   The painting is characteristic of the School of Constructivism—well-defined grids filled with symbolic shapes that serve as metaphors of greater truths, geometric blocks of color, and emphasis of essence over representation. Here, Montevideo, Uruguay is shown vertically by using colorful rectangular blocks containing symbolic details. Courtesy of Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum in Austin, Texas located at 605 Robert E. Lee Road. Umlauf’s sculptures range from haunting expressionism to detailed neoclassical realism to lyrical abstraction. His use of materials is equally diverse: exotic woods, terra cotta or cast stone in his early work, rich bronzes, alabasters and luminous marbles in his prime. With equal facility, Umlauf sculpted family groupings, whimsical animals, religious and mythological figures, and sensuous nudes. Museum archival documents revealed that the United States Polo Association made a motion to commission the artist, Frank Voss, to paint the portrait of Milburn on Jacobs and have it “presented to Mr. Milburn as a mark of the Association’s appreciation of his having acted as Captain of the International Team which won the cup….in 1921” Franklin Brooke Voss (1880-1953) – Franklin Voss was the son of William Voss, a founder of the Rockaway Hunt Club, and he grew up riding to the hounds, once saying he could “scarcely remember a time when horses ranked second either in his mind or in his daily life.” His artistic gifts, too, were apparent when he was a young boy, and he was sent to the Art Students’ League in New York City. As his talent became recognized, he was commissioned by the leading families in racing, fox hunting and polo, painting the famous Thoroughbreds including Man o’War, Seabiscuit and Whirlaway. He traveled extensively, painting across the U.S.A. and in England, and set up his easel at racetracks, stables and the open field, preferring to work with the horses in their natural element. Highly prized in private collections, his work was also published in books and magazines. Roy Lichtenstein American, 1923-1997 Picture and Pitcher, 1977; cast executed 1978 Painted and patinated bronze, edition 2/3 Edmund Hayes and Charles Clifton Funds, 1978 Photo Credit: Alice Lowe for the New York Art Crawl at Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York Early in his career, Roy Lichtenstein derived many of his subjects from cartoon imagery and magazine advertisements. He would strip these images of their context and crop and reimagine them on canvas. Later, he began to broaden his subject matter by canvasing modern art movements such as Cubism, Fauvism, and Surrealism. Between 1977 and 1980, Lichtenstein executed a series of twenty freestanding sculptures, including Picture and Pitcher, that focus on classic themes in painting, such as still lifes and interiors. This series of works additionally explores the theme of light and reflection. Lichtenstein reinterpreted these motifs in his iconic comic book-inspired style --- executed with a thick black outline and flat areas of color – which he developed during the heyday of Pop art in the 1960’s. The subject of Picture and Pitcher is taken from The Ochre Head, a 1937 painting by Henri Matisse (French, 1869-1954). Here, Lichtenstein puts his own spin on Matisse’s original composition, which also features a pitcher overlapping the corner of a painting. Lichtenstein’s execution and the way this work appears to be flat, however, comically subvert the very notion of sculpture. The title is humorous as well, taken from the common mispronunciations of the near-homonyms “picture” and “pitcher”. Smith REF: on-site signage Photo Credit: Alice Lowe for the Florida Art Crawl at the Philip Hulitar Sculpture Garden/The Society of the Four Arts In the late 1960s, the Society of the Four Arts acquired three vacant lots at the corners of Royal Palm Way and Cocoanut Row with the intentions of creating a garden. The lots remained vacant until 1979 when the Four Arts invited Philip Hulitar, a prominent American couturier and Palm Beach resident, to design and plan a sculpture garden. The 2.2-acre garden opened to the public in 1980 and was named in honor of Philip Hulitar in 1988. A place of tranquility and peace, the Philip Hulitar Sculpture Garden includes 18 sculptures by world renowned artists, some of whom are residents of South Florida. The garden has evolved over time to become an urban oasis with numerous park-like elements. In the mid 2000s, the landscape architecture firm Morgan Wheelock, Inc. added new walkways and plantings, areas of seating, an elegant plaza, a classical garden pavilion, water fountains, and a grand lawn. Other popular features include a palm grove and four pergolas, all of which enhance the presentation of the garden’s modern and contemporary sculptures.
