I am not immune to succubus voice... What is BX?
>:)
Short answer: BX is short for Basic/Expert. It's an edition of D&D from the 1980s and it rules. I think it is probably the most complete and cohesive D&D to date (although I prefer AD&D personally), and is the best D&D for teaching newcomers how to play an RPG, bar none. You can get official PDFs here and here, or go for Old School Essentials (free version here), which is the same rules but presented in a more modern format.
Medium answer: BX, or B/X if you can be bothered, stands for Basic/Expert. In the 20th century, there were two versions of D&D which ran parallel to each other: Dungeons & Dragons, often called Basic D&D, and Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, which was of course more complex. AD&D spanned two editions; when people say 1e or 2e, they are referring to AD&D (assuming they know what they're talking about). "Basic D&D" went through a few editions itself, but none of them were marketed the way we think of editions today. So there were three different products called "Dungeons & Dragons Basic Set" with various minor differences, released in 1977 (Holmes Basic), 1981 (Moldvay/Cook, or B/X), and 1983 (Mentzer, or BECMI), but they never said, like "Basic D&D 3rd Edition!" on them. Of these, Basic/Expert is the best one and is very popular among the OSR movement ("Old School Revival" or "Old School Renaissance" depending on who you ask); that is, people who play old editions of D&D. The movement was originally a response to the increasing complexity of 3e/3.5; the OGL Fiasco boosted its numbers a lot too since a bunch of 5e players discovered that other RPGs exist.

Something in reading more of the Pathfinder 2e rules: I can see why Matt does some stuff he does, particularly regarding crafting in campaign 1 (the most still affected by Pathfinder tho I’m sure it was 1e) and when he has them role initiative and when asked if it’s combat replies with “we’re in initiative order” instead of a yes or no, implying it may or not be combat
Hell even if reading the pathfinder books, I’m finding ways to think about dnd 5e in ways I hadn’t before and it’s actually making planning stuff easier. The Gamemastery Guide with its “here’s how to make a Nation or Settlement stat block” and “here’s guides to do certain things like crafting and making up items and various NPCs” is so lovely and like the DMG does fine with what it does but I really like this.
Also: Pathfinder 2e proficiency system continues to be one of my favorite things.
#critical role#dnd#pathfinder 2e#dungeons and dragons fifth edition#also: Orichalcum (spelling???) my beloved#analyzing DMing#I asked for the gamemastery guide the first two bestiaries and the dark archive for my birthday#and I’m pretty sure I’m getting all of them#I have the core rulebook the advanced players guide and guns & gears#I found a pdf of gamemastery but I want it in my hands

Who Masters the Dungeon?
So, picking things up right where we left off last time, Luz manages to get everyone (or at least Amity, Gus, Willow and King) to try out Pathfinder, with some decent success. -As far as the various supplies for an in-person group goes, we’ll say magical solutions are simple enough to come by. -Physical copies of the Rulebook PDFs are created through the use of photo-copying spells on paper. (There’s a literal photo-copy cantrip in 1st Edition, no way they don’t have a spell for that) -Dice are simple enough to come by in the market, though for some reason d12s are the most common to come by (despite being used the absolute least) -Battlemaps are a piece of cake due to the presence of one adorable illusion track prodigy. -Gus is so excited for this, and he even takes the time to make custom minis for everyone.
-Luz kinda gets roped into the GM position for the first few sessions, as she’s the one with some actual rules knowledge. -She’s not bad per say, but while she’s pretty solid at doing character voices, having to worry about literally everything going on, she tends to struggle when things get into combat. -And dammit, she really wants a chance to be able to actually play. -Girl is not built to be forever GM. -She does run them through Little Trouble in Big Absalom (an all-kobold adventure that was this year’s Free RPG Day adventure from Paizo, it’s adorable and fun as heck, I definitely recommend it if you wanna get into Pathfinder 2E), and they actually really enjoy it. -King absolutely becomes convinced Kobolds are the best race in the game (he’s right) and plays nothing but kobolds from then on. -All this to say, one day, Lilith is actually there when the kids are playing. -(She was out for... reasons, during the first game time.) -(I legit just wasn’t thinking about her last post, and completely forgot to list her last post, okay?) -Anyway, she ends up asking Eda about what they’re doing, who obviously describes it as “some nerd game”. -So Lilith listens in on more of the gang’s session, and gets a bit more curious. -At this point, Lilith and Luz’s relationship is still... not the best, so to say. -They’re on speaking terms at least, but trust isn’t quite a full on two-way street between the two yet. -Lilith does ask Luz about it, but she ends up describing it super vaguely, not expecting Lilith to “get it”, or act all smug about it being a “glorified game of pretend.” -That said, it gets completely the opposite reaction after Lilith gets a bit deeper into the questioning, cause it reminds her of something. A certain game she herself used to play back during her Hexside days. -A little game by the name of Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition.
Now you might be asking me, “Wait, when and how would Lilith have played AD&D back in the day? That’s totally ridiculous!” And my answer to you would be “Fools!! This totally makes sense! And let me tell you why!” -Okay, so Eda and Lilith we can assume attended Hexside somewhere in the realm of 20-25 years ago. (Give or take a few years, what with having to account for the Blight parent’s ages, how long Eda’s had the Curse, and the fact that we have no canon age for any of the adult characters at the moment). -So, assuming roughly in the 20-30 year mark, that would place them as attending Hexside smack-dab in the middle of the 90s, the exact timeframe during which the revised version of AD&D 2E was being published by TSR. -Now, it’s probably safe to assume Eda’s obsession with human trash has been kind of a lifestyle choice for her whole life, so it’s easy enough to see young Eda dumpster diving through trash slugs to get to those sweet human goodies. -Second, yes, Lilith was Captain of the Grudgby Team, but you CAN NOT tell me she wasn’t a nerd.
(I mean, look at this dork. Dreamed of being in the Emperor’s Coven, but you KNOW she was an absolute nerd. Girl got her lunch money stolen and everything) -So, we can make the assumption that Eda managed to get her hands on a copy of the Revised AD&D 2E rules, promptly chucked at her nerdy older sister, and Lilith actually took the time to start reading it, and eventually playing it with some of her friends at school. -But, after the whole “Cursing your sister, and immediately joining the Emperor’s Coven” thing, this little hobby falls to the wayside, and falls into the cracks of her memories.
-Back to the present, Lilith’s little revelation that she used to play a similar game catches Luz off guard, who cautiously invites her to sit in on the next game. -Lilith, taking this one step further, spends the whole next day reading the rulebook while Luz is at school, trying to learn this new game. -Eda ribs her the whole time, but appreciates the effort her sister seems to be giving towards finding something to bond with Luz over. -So, Lilith ends up actually being a player next time around, and everyone ends up having a good time. -At this point, everyone’s deciding to take turns running games, hoping to be able to give Luz a break and actually let her be a player too. -Eventually, Lilith offers to run one, and she ends up being the best out of all of them. -While she’s not exactly the best at doing NPC voices, she’s very good at grasping the rules, and is able to keep a general sense of everything going on during combat without it getting bogged down. -Also, she’s really good at trying to tie the PCs into the adventure in a way that really gives everyone a moment to shine. -Also, it’s at this point that Eda becomes ever-so-slightly jealous about being the only one not in on this whole thing, so she joins in too. -Eda’s the type of player to cause problems on purpose (especially when Lilith’s DMing), but dammit she wants an excuse to own some of the shiny math rocks for herself. -Needless to say, Lilith ends up running the next few sessions, until she’s practically unanimously voted to be the one to try and run a full-length campaign.

Now Is The Perfect Time To Get Into Pathfinder Second Edition
Those new to pretending games may be unconscious of the kin contention among Pathfinder and Dungeons and Dragons. The short form is this; when Wizards of the Coast reported another version of D&D after fourth release, a few originators working with the organization chose to keep distributing material for the active third version with some little alters and modifications. That inevitably turned…
