So, we all know Lent is forty days, but which forty days? Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday isn't forty, if you sit down and count. For those who didn't know, this is because Sundays aren't officially days of Lent! There are six Sundays in Lent, counting Palm Sunday, and they regularly interrupt the forty days.
Lenten Sundays were such a confusing thing for me growing up. Worship was somber and simpler, and the prayers/scripture/hymns are all themed around Lent--but we didn't fast! We were in the season of Lent, and our focus was on repentance and forgiveness, but we had come to an oasis in the wilderness. We mourned but we also feasted.
As my mother would explain, "Every Sunday is a little Easter--that's why we worship on Sundays! No matter what season we're in, we find Easter every Sunday. We don't fast on the Lord's day, Johanna, not ever."
I know for some people, Sundays are no different from the other days, and it's accepted that "the forty days of Lent" is an approximation. Although I don't like approximations of liturgically important numbers, I understand this--taking a day off during a solemn season seems like cheating, almost.
My community seemed undisciplined to me as a kid, not able to strictly go without anything for more than a week, making up reasons to feast. My mom wanted dessert, that's all. Now I know that, as Christians, we don't have to make up reasons to feast. I know what my mother meant, now. She couldn't bring herself to fast on the Lord's day, not out of weakness, but out of strength, out of respect. Every Sunday is a little Easter.
I respect those whose little Easters during Lent are spent fasting, literally and metaphorically. I honor those who fall into a rhythm that won't let up until the Easter. I admire the self-discipline that can only be reached by consecutive days of practice. I know that honoring the resurrection includes honoring the death that brought God there--that's why we have Lent.
But for me, self-punishment comes too easily. Lent as a teenager was dark and confusing. I was too practiced at considering death. I named discipline what was torture. The rhythm I yearn for looks different, now.
I've come to understand Lenten Sundays as a slight unveiling, a translucency, a "foretaste of the feast to come," as my liturgy would put it. I am in the desert, fasting (literally or metaphorically), and, for a moment, I am satisfied. Like Elijah, an angel touches my shoulder and gives me what I need, and I can go on longer than I could have imagined with just that small amount of sustenance. Often it makes me hungrier than ever, this foretaste.
Now, the things I add to my practice during Lent I keep, and the bad habits I'm healing from I keep avoiding, but the small pleasures I have gone without are present again on Sundays. Not as a giving in, but a letting in, as an allowing of hope, of celebration in the midst of mourning. No wilderness is forever, and I have to remind myself of that, practically and tangibly. As a Christian, I can't not feast on Sundays.
For those practicing Lent for the first time, or those who have just never thought about it before, make sure you know what Sundays will be for you (or figure it out as you go along, that's okay too)! Happiness in the fast? mourning in the feast? Another day in the holy wilderness? a brief glimpse of hope? a tiny alternation of practice? a bountiful oasis before you return to your journey? Your practice is yours, and your relationship with seasons and Sundays is yours. We all get to Easter differently, from each other and from who we were before. May the road rise to meet you.
Note: Eastern Churches actually do have forty consecutive days, from Clean Monday to Lazarus Saturday. This makes sense. No notes. I never leave y'all out on purpose, I just don't feel I have enough knowledge/experience to meaningfully discuss your liturgical year. Have a blessed Lent, siblings.

baby niannian is bad at math? is it just not his strength or does he have dyscalculia or something? (aka I want to see more learning disability representation and wwx making niannian a disability aid that will help him with Math Problems.)
Math definitely isn't Niannian's strength, but he has vision problems that no one catches for a while because of his sharp memory and keener senses of balance/hearing. If he sees a character once, he remembers it, but it's difficult for him to work out problems on paper before Jiang-furen, Healer Pan, and Wei Wuxian whip something up to help with his eyesight.

🌫️ Blue Mountaintops - Market Mesa 🔔
High atop the steep, flattened spires lies a sparse bazaar, a place for travelers to pop up shop, trade some wares, and leave just as quickly. The chill, howling winds may make the mountain seem uninviting, but stick around to see if the mesa's powerful bells can win you over.

reread Red Dragon this past summer and 10/10 great decision
Will is such a compelling character, you can see why this book got so many adaptations (2 movies and one show). even though the book just covers the tooth fairy/red dragon murders, you can see Will's past in so many ways. How much he struggles with his empathy and his insight into people's heads. His empathy and care for the victims AND killers is really what separates him from typical gruff'n'tuff true crime protagonists. The weight that working in his field has/had on him. He is a sympathetic character, yet people in the book as well as readers can definitely see how he could be threatening, scary to know socially. How much he struggles to contain himself and be 'normal', even though he is being asked to use the darkest parts of his mind. And though Hannibal plays a much smaller role in this book than the others (and he played a larger role in the following books BECAUSE he was so interesting to people) you still see hints of a shared past and familiarity between Hannibal and Will.
Even separated from the context of the NBC hannibal show, it makes you wonder what exactly happened between them, how well did they know each other? Even if your interpretation isn't romantic, its interesting no matter how you slice it. Does Hannibal's insight into Will stem purely from his ability to analyze people and not from having an 'intimate' relationship/friendship/work colleagues in the past? How much did Will actually know Hannibal, did they ever see each other socially outside work or anything even approaching friendship? Like yes, obviously I adore the nbc hannibal obsessive gothic romance between them, but even without the context of a falling out between them it surprises me that Will in never mentioned in the following books (beyond one single reference from jack crawford anyway). It would've been very veryyyyy interesting to have seen Clarice Starling and Will Graham interact at all, like even a single letter exchanged.
I could easily see Clarice being intrigued by Jack's descriptions of Will, enough to send a polite inquiry for help/insight into Hannibal or the Buffalo Bill Case. Whether Will would just chuck that letter into the trash or actually help is up for interpretation, but still! I could see a correspondence between Will and Clarice so easily. They actually have somewhat similar backgrounds (and a great disinterest in discussing their past) though their reasons for joining the FBI are somewhat different, they both care very much about the victims in their cases. Will begrudgingly taking on a mentorship role with Clarice because shes's persistent and courageous enough to pursue help from a guy who is a world champion at shutting people out and he just cant help himself from wanting to help save people from danger despite his own best interests. Will's advice would probably have been more helpful than Crawford or Hannibal.
And just imagine Hannibal's reaction in Silence of the Lambs if Clarice dropped the fact that she had spoken to Will 'dont text me dont call me dont write me letters dont even fucking look at me' Graham. Like "oh. he. responds to YOUR letters hm? well did you know Will is scarred and ugly and afraid of his own mind?.........did he....mention me?". Clarice could've easily leveraged help from Hannibal by making it competitive between him and Will. "Ah yes, that is a fascinating insight Dr. Lecter, Will Graham said something similar when he and I spoke." just playing them off each other and she WOULD'VE too lol i love her
And how would book! Will have reacted to Hannibal's escape from prison/subsequent life on the lam? I guess people's most common interpretation is Will being like "never fucking call me again" after Red Dragon is all said and done, even that case was one he was pushed out of 'retirement' to work on by Jack. And maybe Will just did not want to engage with Any Of It at all after that. But I find it hard to believe Hannibal didn't send him even one semi-taunting letter like the : "i have no plans to call on you, the world is more interesting with you in it" letter he sent Clarice. Or that Will wasn't tapped for info/help by ANY law enforcement agencies as the guy who caught Hannibal way back when. I mean at the very least freddie lounds would've OH wait he did actually die in the books lmaooo 🤣
Anyways as a book Red Dragon is a great read, a tense murder mystery worth flipping through. The movies are great adaptations of the book, not many important details are cut out. NBC Hannibal is still my favorite interpretation of the Red Dragon book, though obviously the show takes from the whole series not just the first book. I'm still sad we never got to see Clarice in the show as she's one of my favorite fictional characters but any role she'd have played in the show would be soooo diminished from her role in the books as her story/dialogue was portioned out to other characters on NBC Hannibal (Will and Miriam mostly but also, Abigail and Bedilia to some degree) so perhaps its for the best 😐

#the eddie happened a couple days ago&i keep seeing footage of tourists almost getting dragged out into the ocean.#&-- this cannot be stressed enough-- i find this hilarious bc no one died&also bc i am inherently a bad person lmao.#but also bc like. this is an excellent example of WHY locals cannot fucking stand tourists lmao.#the eddie is a surf competition that is only held when the surf can match the height necessary for the competition.#like this is one of the most dangerous&prestigious surf competitions in the world. the lifeguards they have watching the beach#are seasoned pros who regularly drag ppl out of north shore riptides. which is a good thing bc despite all this#&despite all the lifeguard warnings&despite not one singular local being on the shore#tourists got swept up&there was a mad scramble that STOPPED THE COMPETITION bc they needed to drag whole families out the water.#several lifeguards almost died trying to save someones dog.#this competition is only held when waimea's waves cap 30ft-- they have cancelled the competition before bc#waves were smaller than anticipated. its specifically named to honour Eddie Aikau a surfer who died setting out to sea#to try to save the Hokulea the first time it went out sailing w/ no navigation equipment&got stuck in a calm belt.#all these facts together give me a headache when i think of how much more regulated this stupid competition is going to be#when there have NEVER been issues like this before mostly bc the eddie isnt usually announced so so many tourists show up.#ive never even gotten to GO ppl line up down the north shore for literally a day in advance to be able to see it happen.#chxjjsbxkxbjsxnajxnsj 🙃🙃🙃

your ai is not powerful enough to comprehend this thing i have for this two (2) specific fictional characters to even begin to try and copy a fraction of my sheer level of (self percieved)understanding of them
