While the Abernants sucked they never laid a finger on their children growing up. Aelwyn did though. That's why while Adaine hated her whole family freshman year her rage and murderous intent was mostly directed at her sister

honestly i've just been thinking about barbarians lately. how like, mechanically, rage really doesnt do much damage but makes you SO good at tanking because of damage resistances. and like? what that means for party comp but also the in universe reputation of barbarians as scary or wild or dangerous and like. what having a barbarian in your party actually MEANS

and like i kind of just realized that like?? tanking is about keeping the other party members from taking damage and barbarians rage serves the same purpose that other forms of protection do. and once i started thinking about that i REALLY wanted aelwyn to talk to lydia to get it in her head that like. abjuration CAN be protective, but its not the only way. and there are different ways to protect people and theyre going to look a lot different depending on the situation

also once i realized i wanted aelwyn to get in a fight to protect adaine i was like. okay which of the adults is actually going to be able to handle this and get through to her though. and my own headcanons about lydia as like, very casual and fun and rowdy but also just whip smart when it comes to emotional stuff, i knew i definitely wanted to see how that interaction went. also i think lydia's whole parenting style is just SO foreign to aelwyn that it could crack that emotional barrier a bit. it was such a delight to write!!!! lydia my beloved <333
