DEATH TOLL IN AFGHAN EARTHQUAKE RISES AS BODIES ARE PULLED FROM THE RUBBLE
According to Afghan Taliban officials, more than 2'400 people have been killed in a devastating 6.3 magnitude Earthquake that hit the drought-stricken Herat region of Afghanistan on Saturday. The Herat region of Afghanistan is home to more than 1.9 million Afghans and the region is renowned for its abundant, top quality crops.
According to a statement from the United Nations Humanitarian Office, all of the homes in the Zindajan district of Herat have been leveled, burying survivors in rubble, leaving many homeless throughout the region as winter approaches, and creating major challenges for aid organizations to provide food, clothing and shelter.
Afghans are already suffering under a crushing sanctions regime imposed by the Biden Administration, complicating rescue and aid efforts for the Taliban government while the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank have suspended aid to the impoverished country which had been occupied by US and NATO forces for two decades.
"The operation is still going on, still some people are being pulled out of the rubble,” the spokesman of Heart’s governor, Nissar Ahmad Elyias told reporters.
"Many people have come from far-flung districts to get people out from the rubble,” said Khalid, 32, at Kashkak in Zindajan district 30 kilometers northwest of Herat city, capital of the same-named province.
“Everyone is busy searching for bodies everywhere, we don’t know if there are others as well under the debris.”
“Many of our family members have been martyred, including one of my sons, and my other son is also injured,” Herat resident Mir Ahmed told Reuters at a hospital that was treating many survivors.
“Most of the people are under the rubble.”

Afghanistan’s Heart in suffer after the third earthquake in nearly a week
A magnitude 6.3 earthquake has struck Afghanistan’s western Herat province, the third after the powerful earthquakes since 8 October that killed more than 2,000 people.
The earthquake occurred just after 8 a.m. on Sunday, the epicentre was located 33 km north-west of the city of Herat, the capital of the western province of the same name. A magnitude 5.5 aftershock followed 20 minutes later, according to The United States Geological Survey.
Many residents in the area were reportedly still sleeping outside on Sunday, fearing their homes would collapse and be trapped under rubble. And shortly after the earthquake, dust storms began, which only exacerbated the situation and damaged the tents where people were living.
“Herat’s people are panicked and scared,” AFP quoted 27-year-old shopkeeper Hamid Nizami as saying. “It’s Allah’s blessing that it happened during the day, people were awake.”

Trying to figure out what the fresh hell is going on right now is very difficult when two of the largest claims being made are, according to the major news sources I can find, unverified.
Link at the Forward about claims of rape (discusses claims made by other outlets as well; contains graphic detail of claims made) Link at CNN about beheadings
(If you click through those links, there will be graphic discussion. No pictures of the dead.)
If folks have links to verify things, let me know; all I'm getting are citation circles, which aren't exactly helpful in circumstances like these. Update: Have gotten some clarifying sources on the latter.

Men dug through rubble with their bare hands and shovels in western Afghanistan Sunday in desperate attempts to pull victims from the wreckage left by powerful earthquakes that killed at least 2,000 people.
Entire villages were flattened, bodies were trapped under collapsed houses and locals waited for help without even shovels to dig people out.
Living and dead, victims were trapped under rubble, their faces grey with dust. A government spokesman said Sunday that hundreds were still trapped, more than 1,000 hurt and more than 1,300 homes destroyed.
...
Saturday’s magnitude 6.3 earthquake hit a densely populated area near Herat. It was followed by strong aftershocks.

Three children were injured in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Battagram district after two earthquakes jolted parts of the country on Sunday, officials said.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the first earthquake of magnitude 6.0 — with its epicentre being the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border region — struck at 10:50am, at a depth of 223km.
The second earthquake of magnitude 4.7 was reported at 5:57pm. Its epicentre was near Jalalabad in Afghanistan and struck at a depth of 15km, PDM said.
Tremors were felt in Islamabad, Rawalpindi and several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
While no casualties were reported, three children were injured in the Hado area of Batkol in Battagram.
Dr Muhammad Naeem, medical superintendent of the District Headquarters Hospital Battagram, told Dawn.com that three children were brought facility earlier today.
Hamid Khan, the children’s uncle, said the siblings were playing on the roof of the cattle pen which collapsed during the earthquake.
Meanwhile, the US Geological Survey, an American government agency that tracks seismic activity across the globe, said that a 5.2 magnitude earthquake had struck 35km southeast of Jurm, Afghanistan.
Hindustan Times reported that “mild earthquake tremors” were felt in New Delhi and its adjoining areas. The publication said that tremors were also felt in Punjab and Haryana, as well as in occupied Kashmir’s Srinagar and Poonch.
In March, at least two people were killed while six injured as a 6.8 magnitude earthquake had jolted parts of the country.
The US Geological Survey said the quake rocked Afghanistan and parts of India as well, including the capital New Delhi, adding that the quake epicentre was 40 kilometres south-southeast of the Afghan town of Jurm.
