24 hours. That’s all it took in order for you to loose any and complete control over your life, but you knew this. Your whole life you were being groomed to become exactly this, but it still caught you by surprise. You weren’t going to act like you were scared or angry, because that was exactly how you felt. In the most simple way possible you could only blame being the daughter of a notorious crime boss and only having one purpose in your life, it was called tradition. 

Ever since you were little you were being groomed from the start to be a mobster’s wife, nothing else. That was the only life you knew, but you were lucky at first. You were the youngest daughter and the burden of tradition fell onto your older sister. She was to be the one to live up to your family’s legacy. Since your father wasn’t lucky enough to be blessed with a son, he made it his primary goal to pick the right husband for his eldest daughter, because it was her husband who would take on the responsibilities of the mob once he was gone. 

So as you grew older you and your second eldest sister were still groomed incase of any unexpected problems, but that was all you were, a back up plan. So you got to do things your older sister didn’t, like obtain an education past high school and explore what was out there in the world instead of the mob. You loved it and you were starting to become a woman comfortable within herself, but all it took was on mistake and it was all ruined.

Your eldest sister had decided to go against religion and give herself to a man she claimed she loved, but that caused for an uproar. She wasn’t careful enough and now she sat in front of you and your family with a positive pregnancy test. You watched as her body filled with regret, but you couldn’t help but notice your second eldest sister shake. It wasn’t anger causing her to shake, it was fear.

Growing up the three of you were close, but since your mother took your older sister’s grooming more seriously than you and your second older sister, the two of you got closer. She was the one who helped you choose a university to attend, learn how to drive, and even shoot a gun. Though she did all that her heart was too pure for this kind of thing and she was in not shape to be the wife of a gangster. 

“I’m not letting you go.”

You whispered to her. She stopped shaking for a moment and then realization hit her. She knew what you were doing and she was too late, you had already stood up and caught the attention of your parents.

“I will go. I will be the one to represent the Kamara family and I promise to deliver.”

Both your parent’s looked at you in shock, but you only bowed your head respectfully, leaving the room as you announced that you were going to pack your bags. You had acted on impulse, but your sister’s who entire life wasn’t going to be wasted if you were still standing. You wouldn’t allow for it, she was going to be great and if it sent you to the grave ensuring her greatness, so be it. 

Goodbye Sierra Leone and hello Sicily.

Growing up, I LOVED being in front of the camera. I had a big personality and even at the age of 9, I used to strike poses whenever it was time to take pictures 💁🏾‍♀️ So in a way, posing has always been second nature to me, but I realize that not everyone is the same way. It’s only Tuesday and I already feel like quitting 😩. • Sometimes I ask myself what’s the point of doing what I do? This usually happens when I’m unsure of myself—which is 90% of the time. • But I realize that someone out there is waiting/depending on my obedience…… To write that song and record it, or to film that video and share it. Maybe even to write this post, because it might be the reminder that they need to keep going. • With that being said, I am not a quitter. No matter how challenging life gets, or whether I don’t get the response that I’m looking for.
