The 28-year-old embraces her Afro-Latinidad with her culture, her style, her music and her name.

But for the six years she was on the show, Amara says she was the only dark-skinned child in the cast and that producers would always place her either way in the back of the stage or smack in the middle "like a bug in the middle of a cup of milk."

The comments from people working on the show were constant. Amara's mother, Ana Maria, encouraged her daughter to embrace her natural beauty. As a native of the Dominican Republic, Amara's mother came to the U.S. and raised the singer on her own in Miami, working multiple jobs - cleaning houses, cooking, selling flowers on street corners - to pay for Amara's dance classes and singing lessons.

"I may have big dreams, but her dreams for me are even bigger," Amara says on Love & Hip Hop: Miami.

And despite early stardom, growing up in South Florida came with challenges, she said.

"I was homeless in Homestead. I used to live in this community called Waterstead by Speedway, and I would park in front of the McDonald's or the Walmart close to Florida City," she said. "I would bathe with wipes in the bathrooms."

She was born Diana Danelys de los Santos but it's the meaning behind the stage name she gave herself that explains her rise and platform.

"Originally, it was because nobody would remember my name," she said. "And then years after, you know, everyone kept telling me, 'Oh take La Negra off, it sounds racist.' It sounds this and I was like 'It doesn't sound racist to me at all.' I love to be called Black. I enjoy when people say that my melanin and my blackness is beautiful."

"I just grew up with my mother. I think that also that isolation made me become even more focused and more driven with my goals and my visions in life," she said.

Amara also explains that racism and colorism run rampant in the music business, and not just from white Americans, but from other Latinos, too. Amara proves this point early on the Love & Hip Hop show when she meets with a Puerto Rican producer known as Young Hollywood.

"Instead of asking me about my music...he was too concerned about my hair," she says. He told her to look "a little bit more Beyoncé, a little less Macy Gray."

The Young Hollywood debacle sparked a conversation about colorism and the racist notion of mejorando la raza within the Latino community.

"I know that nobody wants to talk about it, but we suffer a lot of racism, we suffer a lot of colorism, amongst ourselves. You know, I get it all the time: 'Oh whenever you get married, don't get married to no black man because you want to better the race," she says. "Somebody needs to say something!"

Amara thinks more positive media representation can help the Afro-Latino community. Growing up, she remembers that Afro-Cuban salsa singer Celia Cruz was the only famous Afro-Latina who looked like her that she had to look up to.

Uncovered: Spoon - Lucifer On The Moon

Not long after Texas rock band Spoon finished their 10th studio album Lucifer on the Sofa, they reached out to UK dub producer Adrian Sherwood to reconstruct the entire album into the aptly-titled Lucifer on the Moon. When this companion album was nominated as one of the shortlisted album artworks for Best Art Vinyl 2022, we caught up with Cuban American artist and illustrator, Edel Rodriguez, responsible for both the albums artworks, to get the back story on his outstanding work.

Edel told us, “Britt Daniel, Spoon’s lead singer and guitarist, reached out to me last year. He had seen an image of mine that he felt captured the right mood for the band’s upcoming album, Lucifer on the Sofa.  He asked if I was interested in creating a new image for the album. I’ve been a fan for years and suggested we do a whole set of images. I wanted to create art for the interior of the album, singles and merchandise, and we went from there.”

He continues, “I asked for the lyrics of all the songs and was inspired by them. I created dozens of sketches and we talked back and forth about which ones paired well with the songs. Some of the songs hinted at the idea of a two sided figure (where the main image came from) and with Lucifer as a lurking figure. “

Edel explains, “This fanged red screaming face popped into my head and I did some sketches and ultimately a painting. That image ended up on an inside sleeve on Lucifer on the Sofa and was picked up for the album cover of the companion album, Lucifer on the Moon.”

“The image was duplicated multiple times, like a reverb effect, by designers Jamie-James Medina and Matt de Jong of Undercard Studio.” 

Rodriguez’s bold, figurative works are an examination of identity, cultural displacement and mortality. He has exhibited internationally and his artwork has been commissioned for numerous publications including The New York Times, TIME Magazine and The New Yorker.

Edel shared with us, “Much of my work is influenced by Afro Cuban religious iconography, propaganda art, pop art, and surrealism. I try to bring a bit of my life experiences to all of the assignments I’m commissioned for. This piece for the album was painted with acrylic and oil based ink on bark paper.”

85: Nyboma // Doublé doublé

Doublé doublé Nyboma 1981, Maikano

One of my local record shops has a bin of African LPs labelled “Our supplier in Benin,” which is a wonderfully specific attribution. I would love to have a Man in Belize, a Backer in Brunei. (I’d even take a Woman in Longueuil.) The owner was contacted by a record store clerk who offered an interesting proposal: the Montreal shop would send along its common-as-dirt western pop records (your Eltons, your Streisands, your James Taylors), and their Beninese counterpart would send their own equivalent local basics. A win-win, especially for slavering Afro-pop simps like myself, who get trembly at the very sight of sleeves with school picture day-quality photos of people in killer leisure suits over bright solid-coloured backgrounds with a load of text in a foreign language.

Nyboma is one of the bigger soukous stars in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a songwriter and tenor singer who has been performing for over half a century. Unlike a few of the African singers in my collection, he’s easy to find info on, and even a few lyrics—in fact, 1981’s “‘Doublé doublé’” is enough of a classic that there’s a video from this decade with over 6.4 million views of cats dancing to it at a wedding like it’s “The Electric Slide”:

When I reviewed an Empire Bakuba record a few months back, the group led by Nyboma’s frequent collaborator Pepe Kalle (that’s him introing the video above), I wrote a summary of the soukous genre for the unfamiliar that I’ll recycle here:

“A Congolese form, marked by giddy rhythms and sugarcane guitar improvisation, usually led by a charismatic vocalist who doubles as a hype man. With roots in American R&B and Cuban rumba, it’s a kind of pan-Black form of music—and yet, the guitar style is also faintly reminiscent of bluegrass, a genre whose Black roots are a bit further removed.”

Nyboma’s tenor is high enough it could easily be taken as a woman’s voice and he has a smoother touch in general than Kalle does—he’s not calling out dance moves or doing crowd work. He’s cut from the same angelic stuff as that super-clean soukous guitar tone, the part of “‘Doublé doublé’” that would give a no-dancing township pause despite the obviously [dogwhistle adjective] rhythms. The rumba roots show through pretty strongly in Nyboma’s music, too, which verges on calypso at times. The highlight of the LP is “Papy Sodolo,” a floating down the river sort of number with a languid guitar lead that makes me think of Les Paul wearing water wings.

Happy Birthday Scottish born singer-songwriter David Byrne.

David was born in Dumbarton on May 14th 1952, his family moved to Canada when he was two and later moved the US, settling in Maryland. Byrne is a highly popular musician who has been rocking the music world with his experimental music and rhythms since the 1970s.

The versatile musician started performing as a teenager and has worked in a number of media like films, albums, opera and photography. During his early career he was known mainly as one of the co-founders of the new wave band Talking Heads which produced hit singles like ‘And She Was’ and ‘Burning Down the House’. The band was considered one of the most innovative and critically acclaimed bands of the new wave movement.

Propelled by the success of his band Byrne went on to pursue an equally, if not more successful, career as a solo artist. Famous for his experimental ways, he featured a mix of Afro-Cuban, Afro-Hispanic and Brazilian music in his debut solo album. He has provided music for the soundtracks of various films including ‘The Last Emperor’ for which he won an Oscar along with the brilliant Ryuichi Sakamoto and Cong Su.

The talented artist has also written musical scores for operas. Exploring another side of his creativity, he exhibited his photography and designs on international art shows. He founded his own record label Luaka Bop which was originally intended to release Latin American compositions; however the label has grown to represent music from all over the world.

Away from the music, the movie David Byrne co-wrote and directed, True Stories, is often touted as the most authentic expression of Autism in cinema. The hyper-fixation of a man desperately trying to fit in is an example of ‘Autistic Masking’.

I love Byrnes “weirdness”, his off the wall looks and the diversity of the songs he produces, this version of the Whitney Houston song I Wanna Dance With Somebody is superb.

Ok so like my issue is that I have so many AUs revolving my oc that I can’t give a set story or even anything definitive abt how they fit into the timeline so imma just give interesting factoids or whatever;

-batcat kid but specifically an Afro Cuban Selina so the kids afro cuban

-I can’t decide on a gender BUT for names I’m thinking Simon (like See-Mon) but I change my mind by the hour so

-I think their specialty would be stealth and info gathering on a street level as opposed to online. Like I think they’d have the hiding in plain sight thing totally down and they don’t do stakeouts cause they can literally sneak in anywhere when they feel like it.

-Very sticky fingers. Doesn’t even meant to steal shit sometimes and will even return things to their siblings after they notice. Damian goes through an existential crisis when they return a whole fucking sword he didn’t notice was missing.

-Has abandonment issues in the: I’ll screw u over before u screw me over kinda way, and a tendency to run from consequences. Big moment for them is doing smth wrong and instead of hiding or flat out leaving till it’s forgetting, they decide to just stay and take whatever happens. (Whatever they did isn’t a big deal, maybe like a knocked over vase or whatever; but it’s big in the sense that they feel so secure in not just their place in the fam but the fact that the fam loves them that they can get grounded and be fine or whatever.)

-split up from Selina a lot when it came to escaping or just general wandering for awhile but they always made their way back to eachother. The kind of ppl that can go months without speaking and be completely fine when they come back (tho they absolutely prefer not to and make it a point to see eachother at least thrice a week when the kid gets older)

-Selina’s vv protective of the kid but also doesn’t want them to grow up spoiled and with the ability to survive if smth every happened to her. She feels like a shitty parent sometimes bc her kid doesn’t seem socially ready for so many things but she can’t help but feel a surge of pride or vindication whenever her kid comes out stronger after something tough. It makes everything worth it when her kid can babble about how they fought off some thug, even if her heart aches as she’s bandaging their bruised knuckles.

-I think we need a singer in the batfam actually they can sing now. Black canary’s biggest fan.

-Twin whips. This is me projecting a bit but they don’t feel comfortable if they’re not dual wielding. They can’t use one pistol, it’s gotta be two. Fuck a sword, they’re rocking with swords. It just makes them feel unbalanced and unprotected so they follow in their moms footsteps but yknow they had to double it

-big ole eyes. Slightly unsettling. They’re green and if you look at them too fast you could swear their pupils look like slits at times…

-causes problems on purpose and is genuinely surprised by the consequences

-if they ever got caught and genuinely couldn’t escape, Selina would step in but if she thought they could make it out on their own she’d leave some kind of sign or clue as to how to go about it. She’s so proud when they don’t take her cue and escape on their own for the first time.

-is very used to going unnoticed so ppl who are extremely perceptive or pay too much attention to them freaks them out and it makes them kinda defensive. Someone asking about their day will feel like an attempt at getting them to admit to smth and they’ll respond as such.

-don’t know whether to make them younger than Damian or his age for the sheer comedy but either way they get along with him and Duke the most

-starts picking up the caveman grunts from Bruce and everyone is trying to get them out of it. “Let’s use our word sugarplum :)” “Hn.”

-toxic trait is they expect everyone to know what they’re feeling despite looking like they were etched from fucking marble all the time. They genuinely think they’re an open book and don’t understand why Tim doesn’t get that they don’t ACTUALLY hate him they just said that in a fit of rage and it doesn’t matter anymore because it’s over with.

-very go with the flow kinda person tho. “This might as well happen” personified

-smoothtalker to the max, can lie like a fucking rug. Considering their actual blunt kinda awkward personality, watching them lie so smoothly is almost as jarring as watching Batman become brucie wayne.

-if someone talks shit Abt Bruce it’s whatever and same for most of their siblings but they’ll step for Selina and Jason 😭 (spreading my close Selina and Jason agenda btw)

-tells Jason that if he doesn’t take them on a joyride around Gotham, they’ll let themselves get caught in Bristol and tell Selina that he wasn’t watching their back. They get batburger on the way back

-is very black and white at times and they know that ppl CAN change but they’re also not very forgiving. “Fool me once and fuck you I can’t wait to dance on your fucking Grave” kinda thing.

-big moment is them telling Damian or smth “I don’t wanna be mad at you anymore” and forgiving them for smth big. Smth Abt love being worth heartache and smth Abt how ppl can hurt you w/o meaning too but that doesn’t mean they love u any less or whatever.

-that’s kinda all I got

-OH! They’re darkskinned btw. None of that light caramel macchiato swirl yall always do to mixed kids. I’m thinking earth kitt or Harley Quinn show Selina so they’d be somewhere in there with dark hair.
