My Year End C-drama Review (2023)
Last year, I did two Cdrama Wrapped posts for each half of the year. This year, I watched so much stuff right away I got arrogant and was about to do a January-February summary. And then life happened and handed me my entire ass, so here we are right back on the ground zero.
Well, not exactly. I watched lots of dramas I liked this year and would like to give nods to as many as possible, and before I start forgetting details I thought I better go ahead with the entrees that I'm sure of the answers.
My initial Cdrama reviews were inspired by anniedelavoye's this post 2 years ago, I've extrapolated a lot from there but some entrees remain same.
Tumblr media
Part 2
.
1. First drama I finished in 2023
Hi Venus. Modern workplace romcom isn't my go-to-genre, least of all if the ML is a CEO. If not for the unusual-for-the-genre setup of initial few eps and the strong recommendations of my friends, I might not have pressed play at all. And I'm so glad I did because it turned out to be one of the most refreshing takes of the genre, it was funny, the pacing nor the dialogues were ever draggy, the characters were intelligent and pleasant, and down to earth. It never leaned to the tropes of helpless/badass FL or tsundere/beta ML extremes, there was no dramatic villain arcs, down to the supporting characters everyone were so reasonable and mature and simply had the nicest time ever together. Now I put it like that, it sounds boring but trust me, it wasn't. Do give it a try. Your time won't be wasted.
.
2. An actor who took my breath away
Jing Boran as Lan Jue/Peizhi from The League of Nobleman
Tumblr media
I mean
Look at him. Instant KO.
I remember watching this scene (and every scene that followed after, especially when he had his hair down) and being in disbelief about how he's real. He's literally glowing out the screen! His performance as a model scholarly minister, the way he conducted his glance, his steps, his speech and temperament were nothing but enchanting and... look, I can write poetry about him for ages lol.
And then I watched every single work I could find of him and ended up even more in love, because his resume was nothing but diverse. A measured scholar, a bubbling-out-of-his-skin social butterfly, a ballerina in a tutu, a man pregnant with the cutest radish monster ever, there's nothing he cannot play. I'm definitely going to check out every single work of him that'll be coming out in the future as well. Even if the plot fails, his character will surely be interesting.
(Also, I was FINALLY lured into DMBJ fandom thanks to going down his profile as well, and now I'm here to stay🤭)
.
3. Most relatable character
Bai Moxi from Gone With the Rain
Tumblr media
She was street-smart and sassy, but never foolhardy. She wasn't a damsel nor was overly clever. She had her moments of daydreaming, but she knew what was and wasn't reasonable. She had a high sense of self-worth, she also knew when to make herself scarce. Despite being the most outgoing and energetic personality in the room, she didn't make everything to be about herself. In fact, she couldn't have been happier to be a background supporting character of the story, quietly minding her own business in her corner. In summary, she just felt very real, and exactly like how I love my FLs. Every decision she took felt like what I'd also have done in her situation. (Btw I hope noone messages me about loving Moxi but hating her sister because I don't. I think her character also made a lot of sense based on her circumstances even though she was bit more difficult to love than Moxi.)
Most of all, she was played to a tee by Zhang Nan, the young actress was allowed to shine to her true potential in this role, as she used to be quite stereotyped in either bubbly or petty mean girl roles. The drama horribly fell apart in the latter quarter (I'd like to pretend it all ended before that Great Seperation Scene), but I'm going to remember her charaacter for a long time to come.
.
4. Most inspiring character
Li Lianhua from Mysterious Lotus Casebook
Tumblr media
The tumblr tag for MLC is already filled with Grade A+ poetry, prose and analysis dedicated to him and I'm not capable of wording it any better than them. All I can say is he really touched a vulnerable corner of my heart, and gave it strength. He's just so very admirable and represents all I ever want to be, and his entire character design and all its metaphors and philosophy especially resonate with me as a Buddhist. Like Cheng Yi said at the end of MLC concert, "At the end of the day, if you have a lotus flower in your heart that you can call your own, that's what matters."
.
5. Best Couple of the Year
Lu Zhaoxi and Ye Shilan (Zeng Shunxi and Liang Jie) in Hi Venus, Zhao Jian and Yuan Zhongxin (Zhou Yutong and Zhang Xincheng) in Young Blood 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here are two couples who were each others' equal match in every big, small and miscellaneous ways possible. Where their roles in their partnership did not have anything to do with society-determined gender or power dynamics, not about conforming to them nor about beating them. Everything about their relationships simply had to do with what they meant to each other their admiration, respect and love towards the other person, from beginning to end. In Hi Venus, it was never uncomfortable to watch Shilan being Zhaoxi's subordinate, for he always treated her like any good superior should in any healthy professional relationship. In Young Blood 2, Zhongxin would fully trust Zhao Jian with everyone else's and his own life, not because his head was in wishful romantic clouds but because he was 100% confident in her capabilities and would never disrespect her with "girls should be protected, you stay back and let me take the sword for you" nonsense.
I may check out like 50 dramas per year and may never come by such Het pairing dynamics in some years, yknow? I do not hate on any other kind of dynamic (plus I'd have next to nothing to watch in that case lol) but, THIS... this is so rare -for me to not be icked out by not even a single second of a fictional het couple's screentime lol- hence the gushing! (Though I know I'm not doing the greatest job of phrasing what I feel😆).
Following that note, though not a couple, honorable mentions to Chufeng (Bi Wenjun) and Robin (Zhu Zhengting) from Silence of the Monster who took Sui Yi (Sun Yihan) into their home not because they thought it'd be chivalrous to help a girl, but because it's the nice thing to do as a fellow human. For continuing onto integrating her into their world with ease and enthusiasm not because any of them had feelings for her but because they simply found her a good friend to hang out with.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Suffice to say I DIG ANY relationship where gender does not come into play, like, at all (or barely, if you must).
.
6. Best harem of the year
Orchid and Lotus harems (from League of Nobleman and Mysterious Lotus Casebook)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Only sharing the pics of Orchid Harem because it was from the earlier quarter of this year, whereas pics of Lotus Harem will be everywhere in the Cdrama scene for quite a while to come lol)
The support group of devout puppies, zhijis, friends-with-benefits and all sorts of other polycule postions, all centered around one precious babygirl enigma of a man is just my jam, and I love it when it happens because it brings forth the fandom's most unhinged high-art. 😌😌😌
(ALSO ME AND WHO WHEN!😭)
.
7. Best ensemble of the year
Young Blood 2, I Am Nobody
For me a perfect ensemble is where the supporting characters are just or almost nearly as engaging and thoroughly written as the main leads, you'd love every second spent on any character just as much as you love that of any other. The ultimate relaxing experience where your brain doesn't have to pick favorites and you don't have to speed watch or fast forward or be antsy about who's going to appear next because you know it's gonna be enjoyable no matter whom.
And this year, it's Young Blood 2- with its Class 7 members who were all so different but all so compelling and equally contributing to the plot, complimented by the Class 8 and the unnervingly captivating villains.
And I Am Nobody- with its extensive spread of young and old heroes/antiheroes alike, all with dramatic backstories and individual charisma that were not second to another.
.
8. Favorite posters/promos of the year
Mysterious Lotus Casebook, Young Blood 2, Sunshine By My Side
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Really liked what MLC did with positioning the characters on various spots of the titular Lianhua Lou, the wind-sway choices for the wisps of hair and the skirts... idk the exact angles of it all were just right for each character and their vibes and appealed to me a lot.
The blending-into-painting style poster of Young Blood was so pretty too, plus these Suoyi raincoat posters.
The comic strip posters for Sunshine were also super cute, unique and perfect for the drama's themes.
.
9. Best opening credit sequence
Love You Seven Times
The drama itself was a hot mess but the opening sequence was entirely worthy of being a parallelish-universe story to Love Between Fairy and Devil without a debate. IF ONLY they put the same effort to the story itself.
.
10. Favorite Prop/Set designs
A League of Nobleman- Lan Jue's Tea Pavilion, Mysterious Lotus Casebook- Lotus House
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wish I could install a fixture in my home where me and my imaginary homies can chat over tea while being seductively separated by an active stream of freshwater, while my not so elegant period-style caravan is waiting outside in the yard for more cozily cramped get-together times. 🤧
.
11. Favorite lighting/color grading of the year
The Forbidden Flower, My Journey to You
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The former, a kaleidoscopic explosion of colors, a celebration of fleeting life, youth, summer and nostalgia. It was a daring drama on so many fronts and nailed each of them as well, and the use of colors represented its bold soul perfectly.
The latter, a marvelous combination of mountains shrouded by mist, dark-toned wood pavilions and fur-lined robes, pale, dusty makeup with rosy lips and plump cheeks; all combined together on screen to bring a palpable ambience of a secluded glamorous hideout in a dystopian world and its ethereal residents. Seriously, how I especially loved to stare at the bride candidates in their white getups, it was like the light bounced off of the fabric to shine on their faces even more, and the skin and hair looked non-oily and baby soft. And it didn't feel over the top but convincing because the camerawork and editing conjured a believable image of an upcountry with dense and dewy forests, waterfalls and rivers, there's no sun, no heat no sweat, only cold air and pregnant humidity. OF COURSE you are going to look like THAT.
.
12. A drama that taught me new things
Hi Producer
The infuriating thing about Yu Zheng's show-off genre of costume dramas is that the story may be a hit-or-miss, the "historical facts" provided in them may need to be taken with a grain of salt, but they almost always provide me with great entry points to do my own research 🥲. Most niche facts that take me by surprise and things I'd never have thought to look up on my own are randomly sprinkled all over the place and I run around like a headless chicken trying to collect them all.
.
13. Most exhilarating drama/scene
Three-Body
That scene in ep 5. The entire buildup to it and the resolution. The phenomenal acting bringing forth the exact emotion and exact tension required. The moment you start to understand at least a sliver of why exactly all the characters are making this much of a fuss about what's happening to them.
I cannot spoil, not even a bit. You'd have to see for yourself.
I Am Nobody
(lol Three Body and I Am Nobody. I swear that was an unintentional coincidence!)
The great V-match between certain two characters, I can't elaborate. (See the thing about exhilarating scenes is that you have to see it for yourself what's the big deal is about lol.) I really liked how both their biggest vulnerabilities and yearnings were pulled out mercilessly in public, how they both fought themselves through each other before actualizing the philosophy of what it was all about. It was beautiful to watch visually as well.
.
14. A drama location I'd love to visit
Yunnan province
I've seen glimpses of the prosperous and both naturally and culturally diverse Yunnan province through Bite of China Documentaries and Dianxi Xiaoge's vlogs, the beautiful bucolic backdrop of Meet Yourself only heightened the wish to experience it all in person.
.
15. A drama that was a pleasant surprise
I Am Nobody
Perfect casting job, earnest effort from everyone involved to bring out the 2D to live action in the bestest way possible, it was like a dream come true to see a genre that was previously limited into written media like comics and fanfics (modern cultivation) as a drama even if it meant labelling all the cultivators as aliens lol
It had a lil bit of a flavor of western coming-of-age/"teen gets powers and goes on an adventure in search of their origins" stories, a bit of Japanese anime presenting style and the chaotic-gaggle-of-youth-and-veterans-with-different-extreme-powers genre vibe. And then they incorporated Chinese wuxia philosophy into it and made it their own thing. I hope to see more of this in future, and definitely a season 2!
.
16. An old drama I watched in 2023
Shaolin Wendao (2017)
This is one of the best period dramas I have ever seen, but I don't recommend it unless you have a strong tolerance for angst. Like, worse than Royal Nirvana and Heroes (2022) level of angst.
HOWEVER, unlike those two, Shaolin Wendao will leave you feeling rewarded for your suffering. This drama achieved a number of things that very few other have managed to do, especially for a story with such a heavy and dark premise.
The characters remained true to their selves from beginning to the end. They grew up in various ways, at the same time remained consistent. The story made sure to make all the characters aware of their individual faults and address them.
The characters were put through immense wringer but also provided viewer with the resolution they deserved. It was SO exhilarating at times, I cried. It felt like a detox, sometimes.
They prioritized telling a realistic story about the changing nature of humans. The ending was blissful but not in the idolized, wrapped-in-a-bow-tie way one would imagine. They wanted to tell a story about tribulations and letting go, and did exactly that.
It will ignite the pain but will also make sure to thoroughly quench it. So there's that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh and also, respect to all the actors. All those characters were so layered and had some quite difficult scenes. I do not understand how Guo Xiaoting didn't get any good roles matching of her caliber for years after this. She was magnificent.

Key is free (legally!) but not great but has a cool opening
Key: The Metal Idol is a 90s anime that is free several places on the internet (youtube, freevee, tubi, probably elesewhere... I watched it on freevee, which is a place to watch a variety of shows including anime free and legally with only a few ads, not sure if it works outside the US)
Do I recommend it?  well.  No?  The opening, yes.  Loved the song (I watched the English Dub, its different in the original Japanese, I liked the English opening).  It’s going to be in my head for a while.  And there’s a part where the city behind her is turning gears and the train dances like ribbon.  Liked that little part
youtube
But uh, it’s for sure from the era where all anime was thought of by Americans to be in 2 categories : “kids cartoons” or “violent sex cartoons” (Key being the latter). There is some real unnecessary “fanservice” and blood shed... I know there is some that fits due to being about robots and men controlling music careers of young women and teenage girls, but some other stuff didn’t need to be there.  I never watched it when it was first brought over in the US (on VHS, I remember seeing it in music stores) because she has stupid anime hair.  But hey, it was free so I gave it a chance this time... [SPOILERS AHEAD!]
The “plot” is that she’s a robot from the country who moves to Tokyo because making 30,000 friends will make her human.  She decides being an idol (pop singer) is the best way to go about this.  How I thought it would go: she has a kind of AI and interacting positively with people will make her more human-like.  How it went : actually she has psychic powers that she suppressed due to trauma of her family dying and convinced herself she is an emotionless robot.
Which is something (minus the powers) that I’ve seen in a better anime movie (trauma making someone think they are a robot).
It almost feels like a magical girl anime that took a dark turn, but not in the way way that modern magical girl animes take a dark turn, if that makes sense.
And the bad pacing is well-known.  Short episodes (15 to 25 mins) for eps 1-13.  190 min episodes for eps 14 and 15.  They took the mystery and backstory slowly being hinted at for the previous 13 and let ep 14 be 3 guys sitting around talking with only limited amounts of actually animated flashback.  WOW.
There are some truly unhinged characters that will make you ask “what is WITH that guy?” and never really get a good answer.
Most unintentionally hilarious scene was the the huge muscle villain guy in jail, sitting naked except for his bandages, hunt-and-peck typing on a bulky old tan computer trying to hard to type in a password and failing again and again.  It wasn’t all at once, it kept cutting to him doing this.  If you add up the screentime of it it went on for what feels like a half hour.  The longer it went on the funnier it got.
Also, they thought it was a sci-fi possibility but were still in disbelief that the military could use remotely controlled robots in war... wonder how they’d react if you could go back in time and tell the makers of the anime about drones and those Boston Dynamics “dogs”.
I’m mad that a certain character died.  If that person had lived, there should’ve been more episodes (at least one more long, or 2 more short), with that person and Key adjusting to Key’s new human life after the villains are defeated and Key is “human”.
Also, wanted to know what happened to the idol that Key was fixated on.... Miho.... very unclear if she died or not. (different character than mentioned above).  Considering Key’s fixation on her, and her singing of Key’s mother’s lullaby, one thing I would change about the plot is to have Miho actually BE Key’s mother.... it would be an interesting commentary on stardom and youth if it was a middle-aged woman who was remote-controlling a young-woman robot pop singer persona on stage.
Overall, do I regret watching it?  No.  Would I watch the series again?  No.  The opening/ending?  Yes.

Stuff I’ve Watched this CB
Sorry, really got a lot. I’ve ranked them from most recommended to least recommended. And separated movies from series. And have included some shows I’m planning to watch!
Series
Kim’s Convenience S4 I LOVE APPA. Was a bit appalled I didn’t know S4 was out on Netflix because it’s one of my favourite shows on Netflix. It’s REALLY GOOD. So many laugh out loud moments, the characters are WONDERFULLY fleshed out and the chemistry between the actors is through the roof. Story telling is also amazeballs. 10/10 would recommend.
Dirty Money S1&2  10/10 would recommend! I really liked Dirty Money because I learned so so so so much from the show! I do think the producers had no intention of being unbiased and presenting a neutral stance on the “villains” because I wanted to punch every single “villain” every damn episode. If you’re looking for objectivity and “both sides of the story”, I don’t think this show is for you. But that said, everything presented is factual so I did learn a lot. Supplemented with additional reading post show, I felt like a whole new world was opened to me. :)
Kingdom S1&2  JUST WATCH THIS. IT’S SO DAMN GOOD.
Only issue I had was how damn ridiculous it was that whenever a horde of zombies were running towards our protagonists, they’d just stand there and do their typical Korean AISSSSSHEEEEBYEFUCK stance for like a full 17342154 minutes while the music and tension builds and the zombie horde comes closer and closer and closer and THEN they finally decide to run. Eh friend, what siah. Also, I concluded from watching Kingdom that if there ever was a Zombie apocalypse, I’m completely and utterly FUCKED. But I live in ridiculously hot Singapore surrounded by water... so I guess I’ll be alright? 9.5/10
Derry Girls S1-2 Irish Catholic School Girls, I’M SOLD. I mean, come on. How can I not LOVE this show? It’s HILARIOUS. And having spent 10 years in an all girl catholic school, Derry Girls really really resonated with me. The characters are laugh out loud hilarious, and all really likeable! The only issue I had with it is that the characters don’t really grow very much over the course of 2 seasons. So season 1 first episode vs season 2 final episode, it won’t matter even if you watched it backwards.
Because the seasons are very short, only 6 episodes per season and there are only 2 seasons so far, it doesn’t matter very much. For now. But I reckon if they had like 7 seasons, it’s going to get VERY repetitive. But at the moment, ISSA GREAT! 9/10
Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency S1 8 Episodes of ABSOLUTE CRACK. It’s based off something Douglas Adams wrote so I wouldn’t expect anything less. Acting isn’t great but the storytelling is riveting. If you enjoy Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (the book), it’s very likely you’d enjoy this. It can get quite frustrating sometimes though because it’s so ridiculous so if you’re looking for a detective series based on solid logic, look somewhere else. But if you just want some fun and silliness mixed with some smart, this is wonderful. 8/10
Never Have I Ever S1 I had a lot of trouble liking the main character but on retrospect, it might be because the character doesn’t even like herself that much to begin with. Had quite a few laugh out loud moments and the Asian family moments were very relatable.  THE MOTHER. THE MOTHER IS EVERYTHING. She’s my favourite, I would watch an entire series with just her. The main problem with Never Have I Ever (in my opinion) is that it tried to do a lot of things to prove the same point. So it does get a bit frustrating after a while. By the 3rd episode, I’m just like GET ON WITH IT I GET IT. I GET THAT FAMILY IS MOST IMPORTANT, I GET THAT SHE’S NOT GRIEVING HER FATHER. So... it can get a little cliche and repetitive. To me la. But still funny, still good. :)  8/10
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt S1-4 The opening track really really grows on you. UNBREAKABLE! They’re alive, damn it! IT’S A MIRACLE! Created by Tina Fey, this show is silly and full of fun.
I really liked S1-3. It’s a very light-hearted show that makes you feel really good watching it because it’s just so positive and optimistic. S4 got a bit too ridiculous for me and the characters started doing some really weird shit that is a bit too incredulous (it was never a logical show based too much on reality to begin with but S4 was really a bit much). But if you like shows like The Good Place, I reckon you’d like Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. 8/10
The Circle USA Can’t remember why Housemate and I started on this but it was actually not bad! I think it’s because the OG characters were really likeable! JOEY! JOEY IS A PRECIOUS PUPPY THAT NEEDS TO BE PROTECTED AT ALL COSTS. It’s not very intellectual and I was never too invested in any of the characters or relationships. BUT! great if you don’t want to think too much and just watch some mindless TV that isn’t absolute trash. (TOO HOT TO HANDLE I’M LOOKING AT YOU.)  7/10
Tiger King S1 SIEOW ONE THIS SHOW. It’s an absolute MINDFUCK. I started with many questions, I finished with A BILLION more. I don’t even know how to describe or explain this show. IT’S MADNESS. There are big cats, gay husbands who turn out not to be gay, tiger queen who allegedly killed her husband and fed him to her tigers, crazy dude who tried to pay some other dude 5k (i think? or 3k? seriously it’s crazy) to kill tiger queen, big guns and expired meat and pizzas?!?!! Yah, Mindfuck. CRAZY/10
Cable Girls S1-4  Season 1 and 2 were BEAUTIFUL. The characters have so much depth, the acting is impeccable, the costumes are AMAZING, the cinematography is inspiring, the story telling was riveting. Then season 3 and season 4 happened and... I will pretend the show ended in S2. -_- Character development took a major hit from season 3 onwards. But I would still recommend Cable Girls because the acting, the acting is AMAZING. 10/10 for s1&2. 5/10 for 3&4.
Money Heist S4 Was quite hyped for this and was really quite let down. The beauty of Money Heist has always been structure in chaos, elegance in the mess. S4 was very frustrating because it didn’t have that. I felt like they were trying very hard to make you think the heist team was going to fail and started to fill in weird impossible things to ensure the plot was still able to proceed. Did not enjoy S4 as much as I thought I would. :(  But if you have invested in the previous seasons, you know you’re gonna watch it even if it’s absolute crap anyway. 6/10
The Letter For The King S1 Ep 1&2 Premise was quite interesting, trailer was interesting enough. But DEAR GOD WAS IT SLOW. And also, literally ALL the characters were unlikeable! I don’t understand why anyone would make a show with entirely unlikeable characters. I couldn’t get past the 2nd episode but I went ahead to read a few reviews and recaps. Yeah, was a good idea to stop at episode 2. Would not recommend. 2/10
Movies
Game Night  Rachel McAdams is QUEEN. A really loltastic film. Is a really good post dinner wind down to end the day film. And particularly because I can relate to how competitive our main couple was. :) Some parts don’t add up and there are a few times I think the story becomes a bit too much for itself, trying to layer upon layer of twists, but still a good fun movie! :) 7.5/10
The Half of It Heartwarming. :) Enjoyed it because i think the main protagonist is very likeable. And she’s so... plain and relatable. I hate to say this though but... I found the whole movie quite forgettable. Like, it didn’t feel very deep to me though it did touch on quite a few intense and deep topics of first love, family, self acceptance etc. But it’s just doesn’t reverberate through every cell of my being. The whole movie is just so gentle and because it is so mild, it becomes forgettable. Acting is good, character development is okay I guess. But generally... just mediocre to me. But not bad. I just wished it wasn’t so... light and airy. I wish it made me cry. 7/10
Cabin in the Woods Housemate wanted to watch it because it’s horror-esque. I was okay with it cos it’s horror comedy. And also Chris Hemsworth. :D Was quite loltastic. Though SPOILER ALERT Chris Hemsworth’s character dies a bit too early for my liking. I really liked the over the top inclusion of various different monsters near the end. Was fun trying to identify them. Fun movie! Not very scary but quite a bit of gore that’s peppered with lots of humour to make it okay. 7/10
Extraction LOTS OF CHRIS HEMSWORTH. But plot wise... hmm... Housemate enjoyed it because he said the fight scenes and the things our extractor does are very real and is what a trained professional would do in the high pressure situations he finds himself in. They probably had a great consultant to keep things realistic.  I didn’t enjoy it as much because I felt that our hero was... too powerful and the bad guy was too bad. Almost caricature-ish. Difficult to have character development like that. But hey, I didn’t watch it for depth, I watched it for Chris Hemsworth’s face so... very much satisfied. :) 7/10
Other Stuff I’m Planning to Watch
After Life S2 I liked S1 so... just a continuation I guess. Typical English humour. Also, I watched S1 dealing with a death of a friend so the show does have some sentimental meaning for me.
Hollywood S1 New show seems promising! There are blacks, gays, sex, extortion, glitzy costumes, glamour and really blonde blondes. Also the guy who plays Sheldon Cooper in BBT. High hopes, I have high hopes!
The Victims’ Game DETECTIVE SHOW SOLVING CRIMES. I’M SOLD.
Whoa fuck, I really watch a lot of Netflix.

Fabulous Olicity Fanfic Friday - October 20th, 2017
Tumblr media
Happy Friday! So this is my attempt to both thank awesome fanfic writers for their amazing work and offer my recommendations to anyone who is interested. Here are the fantastic fanfic stories I read this week! They are posted in the order I read them.
The Life They Knew multi-chapter by @bytemegeekette - AU - Olicity - Felicity loved watching the happy life that her best friend had built for herself. Oliver watched his best friend reach every milestone he himself feared. An unexpected tragedy thrusts their lives together in a way neither could imagine. Could they over come their hate for each other to help fulfill the last wishes of their best friends. Loosely inspired by the movie 'Life as We Know It http://archiveofourown.org/works/4944559/chapters/11349703
May I Be Your Shield multi-chapter by @aussieforgood and @ghostfoxlovely - She could always tell him about her day. She could always tell him anything. Except she didn’t. The woman closest to him was keeping the biggest secret of all; a dark secret, a dangerous secret. Felicity Smoak is not safe, that much is true, but whether Oliver can save her from that is another matter. Sooner or later, we find out exactly how far we’ll go to protect the person we love most. http://archiveofourown.org/works/5721514/chapters/13182745
Time for a Story multi-chapter by @smkkbert - This fic shows Olicity and their life as a (married) couple with family. Although Olicity (and their kids) are the protagonists, other characters of Arrow and Flash make appearances. YOU NEED THIS STORY IN YOUR LIFE. http://archiveofourown.org/works/3912157/chapters/8757172
Waiting by the Phone by @felicityollies - Oliver and Felicity have taken to having phone calls every night before bed. Some of them are steamier than others. https://archiveofourown.org/works/12351333
6x01 Post Episode Fic by @anthfan - What takes places right after the credits roll, Part 1: http://anthfan.tumblr.com/post/166373524542/6x01-post-ep-fic and Part 2: http://anthfan.tumblr.com/post/166569312432/post-6x01-fic-part-2
If Loving You Is Wrong (I Don't Want To Be Right) multi-chapter by @smkkbert - They live in a society where the Ministry for Procreation decides who you get to marry. Once you get the letter with the contact details of your partner, you are supposed to marry within few months. Sexual relationships with any other partner are forbidden, even before you receive the contact details. Everyone who disobeys that law will be punished brutally.  Oliver and Nyssa have come to terms with that. Although they are married, Nyssa can secretly be with Sara, and Oliver can do whatever he wants to do. When Oliver decides to make changes, he falls madly in love with Felicity. White Collar Ending Discussion/Meta
@quiescentcastiel  finished watching White Collar on Netflix and wanted to discuss their *feelings* about the ending. To chat about these feelings, I needed to go re-watch the Season 5 finale and all of Season 6 (poor me – all that time spent staring at/listening to Matt Bomer)
Tumblr media
WARNING: if you haven’t watched the series finale, or Season 6, or the show at all, the following conversation would give away so very much (the series is built on cons and surprise twists after all). SO - if you read on below the cut, on your own head be it.
After finishing White Collar/watching the series finale, @quiescentcastiel shared these thoughts/concerns:
I didn’t have very high hopes for the finale so that last episode was better than I’d expected, but I still couldn’t imagine Neal leaving it all behind, y'know?
It seemed like a huge part of his narrative had been about finding a home and a family, and whether a con was always criminal or if he could change. So I was nervous for the finale because after that psychiatrist ep Neal went all ‘I’m gonna steal things because they’re there and I can and that’s just who I am’ and it just made me wonder if they were going to take back all his character development. (although, in the end, that plot point didn’t seem to go anywhere other than having that 2mil hanging over his head?)
Absolutely the entire series has focused on the balance between the issues of belonging and self-identity for Neal – wrapped up in the issue of his freedom. Does he stay a con-man, belonging to that ‘family’ of people – such as Kate and Mozzie – or does he change? Does he go straight and truly become a part of Peter and Elle’s world/life? And if he goes straight, who is he? What will he do? And really, he feels that he only has the *choice* of going straight if the anklet is off. Prying it off forces him to continue the con and the run…and Neal is so very tired of running.
In fact, as the series winds down, several people essentially ask him “once you are free of the FBI, what then?”  Matt keeps insisting that he’s ‘out’ – he’s ‘done’ – no longer wanting the conman life. He says this to Mozzie in the season 5 finale, citing the threat of prison (mostly because Peter will always be looking for him – a fact Peter emphasizes). When his deal falls through, he allows Mozzie to set up an exit strategy – betrayed, he wants an out from an FBI ‘home’ that continues to break its promises. We never know if he will act on Mozzie’s plans, because he is kidnapped and entangled in yet another mess…because of who he is, because of his illegal skills. Essentially, we are shown through this (and the season 6 storyline) that Neal can never go straight as Neal – he is too valuable, to other criminals and/or the FBI. Neal – always a dozen steps ahead, realizes this and begins to plan.
As evidence of this we see in S601, tellingly entitled Borrowed Time, Rebecca, now doomed to life in prison, says to him (bold italic text = my emphasis):
Rebecca: People like us, we live on borrowed time. We either end up behind bars or dead. Neal: There’s always another way. Rebecca: No. There isn’t. It catches up to you eventually. This is as close as we can get to a happy ending, I think. Being able to do some good before the end.
After which she attempts escape condemning herself to death by Federal Marshal. At the end of this episode, Neal and Mozzie have this conversation:
Mozzie: She made a choice. For her, it was better to risk almost certain death than go back to jail. Some birds can’t be caged. I doubt I’d be that brave if the time came. Neal: Was that bravery? There’s always another way. I’ve lived my life on the idea. Mozzie: That’s what we tell ourselves. The greatest lies a conman tells are to himself. But if we are being honest, she’s right. We’re on borrowed time. Our sins catch up to us all eventually. Neal: Maybe not. I offered Peter a deal. The Pink Panthers for my freedom. Mozzie: While you were kidnapped, I walked in your shoes. I sat in the FBI, felt the camaraderie. It’s compelling. It’s also an illusion. We are who we are, as are they. They promised you freedom before, what makes you think this time they’ll deliver? Neal: Who says that’s all I’m after?
Then, in S6.03 Uncontrolled Variables, there is a conversation with Keller that I think is the key to understanding how/why Neal ended things the way he did:
Keller: Collateral damage is a con man’s by-product, Caffrey. See, guys like us, we hurt people around us. Neal: I’m not a guy like you. Keller: You keep telling yourself that, sweetheart. So what? You got it all figured out, huh? We take down the Panthers, we get our freedom. Then what? Live happily ever after? - Yeah. Neal: Something like that. Keller: Something like that? Yeah, you’re living in a fairy tale, Caffrey. No matter what happens, me and you, we’re hunted men. We take down Woodford and his crew, it’s never over. Even in prison, they’ll come looking for us. And their reach, my friend, it is far and it is wide. And the Panthers, Neal, they don’t stop looking for rats until they’re dead. Until then, guess who they go after. People closest to you. And they’d make it hurt, Caffrey. They’d make it hurt so bad that you’d wish that they’d found you. So, you enjoy this freedom you’re working so hard to get. 'Cause when you’re footloose and fancy-free, those people that you love so much, are on death row.
Tumblr media
So we put these ideas together with the good-hearted Neal we know:
we live on borrowed time. We either end up behind bars or dead.
There’s always another way.
…as close as we can get to a happy ending…being able to do some good before the end.
…when you’re footloose and fancy-free, those people that you love so much, are on death row.
Look at his face in that last jpg. I believe that Neal realized right then that he didn’t get either ‘family’ option - because he was too valuable an “asset” alive. He HAD to die in order to a) keep those he cared about (including Peter’s unborn child) alive/safe and b) actually be free to make choices and find himself. He had to leave *everyone* behind in order to have any of what he wanted. He found his “other way” – not prison, not death – but he had to let go of all those he loved in order to do it. And Neal, our “just wanting to belong” Neal, was willing to make that sacrifice – to “do some good” in the end.
Tumblr media
Which is all very touching and heartwarming, but oh so very sad for everyone involved, really - including US.  Which is why I recommend to those unsatisfied by White Collar’s ending - to those wanting closure - read these two wonderful fanfics over on fanfic.net by jeanie2914
Apres Moi: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11386478/1/Apr%C3%A8s-moi
And then read Bonjour Encore (ONLY after you’ve read Apres Moi): https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11604349/1/Bonjour-Encore
Tumblr media
After reading these, both @quiescentcastiel and I felt oh, so much better. The power of fanfiction in action.
