However.

I rarely see anyone talking about it, but to not pick up that Garten of Banban is aggressively autistic is to miss a vital part of the experience.

I am hypnotized by Let’s Plays of people outsise of a specific flavor of ASD trying to comprehend Garten of Banban in the same way @patricia-taxxon is compelled by "the Rodfellows Movie" in her video "On the Ethics of Boinking Animal People."

The mere fact that mascot horror seems to turn on something in so many autistic brains is a pretty good indicator. But the MS Paint art? The monotone deliveries of the voice cast? Really embarrassing comedy and dependence on puns? Cameos by characters from other games? The fog of "amateur hour" that permeates every decision?

The part that cinches my armchair diagnosis is the complete lack of awareness of how interactions, bonds, or friendships work. Like, on a basic level. Every single chapter is "a monster chases you, and in a later chapter (sometimes the very next one) the monster apologies and now is friends with the player character."

That's so ridiculous. It happens over and over and over and the player has zero agency in the matter. Because we're just supposed to accept having any of these completely unlikable characters as friends is desirable. They said they're sorry! Come on, guys! Don't you wanna be friends with horribly-sculpted monster people?!?!?! Those are way better than humans!

It's madness. Beautiful, stupid madness.

I regret that the Euphoric Brothers were so richly rewarded for their first effort, because the importance of improving is now not there. They are not game designers, they are not storytellers, and I'm not sure they understand they can't ride their current skill forever.

The only people not laughing at them are other autistic people, children, or autistic children.

I dunno, I think about how bad my first attempts at anything creative were and how much worse off I'd actually be if just.......if I was monetarily rewarded for it.

Not that being rewarded would have been bad. Just artistically bad. Hope for my future bad.

München 29. Juni - 4.Juni 

Radikal Jung am Münchner Volkstheater und anderer bayerischer Kram feat. Lizzy

Nach einer heiteren aber auch nervenzermübenden zweiten Spielzeit am Schauspiel Dortmund, war nun endlich Zeit für die Sommerpause!

Daher setzen Lizzy und ich uns in den Zug und fuhren in meine alte Heimat: München, Hauptstadt des Königreichs Bayern (God saves the Söder).

Wie treffend, dass zur selben Zeit auch das Radikal Jung Festival am Münchner Volkstheater war! Ein Festival für etablierte Theaternewcomer*innen!

Am Abend von unserer Ankunft wurde GYMNASIUM von Bonn Park gezeigt. Wie schön, dass man trotz über sechs Stunden Zugfahrt gefühlt die halbe Belegschaft des Schauspiel Dortmunds auf dem Vorplatz des Münchner Volktheaters antrifft. Dabei dachte ich, ich kann die Visagen meiner geschätzten Kolleg*innen ganze sechs Woche nicht sehen!

Nach der Vorstellung machten Lizzy und ich mit unserem besten Lächeln im Gesicht und einem Glas Weißwein bewaffnet ans Networking. Was soll man als nicht-etablierte Theaternewcomer*innen auf einem Festival wie Radikal Jung sonst machen? Der Abend endete damit, dass ich um vier Uhr morgens beschwingt von den einem oder anderen Stamperl (bayrisch für Schnapsglas) Ouzo in ein Uber stieg und nach Hause fuhr.

Am folgenden Tag trafen Lizzy und ich uns um 16 Uhr um in der hochsommerlichen Nachmittagssonne unser Frühstück bei einem asiatischen Imbiss einzunehmen. Für mich gab es einen Teller gebratenen Eierreis und eine große Cola. Lizzy begnügte sich mit einem Curry. Daraufhin schlenderten wir durch München, genossen die schönen Bauten, bewunderten die schönen Menschen im englischen Garten und schwitzen den vorigen Abend aus.

Unser dritter Tag war von Kultur geprägt! Zu erst besuchten wir das Haus der Kunst wo es eine Nebel Installation namens Nebel Leben von Fujiko Nakaya gab. Das war aufregend. Danach gönnten wir uns ein bisschen Freie Szene und besuchten die Performance SOLASTALGIA von THE AGENCY in der Lothringer 13. Auch da wurde viel genebelt!

Lizzy hatte für den Trip noch ein weiteres Ziel: Das Schloss Neuschwanstein! Natürlich wollte mein bayerisches Herz auch nichts anderes als diese Pilgerstätte zu besuchen. Mit Wanderschuhen, Corona-Maske und 9€ Ticket fuhren wir also mit dem Regionalzug nach Füssen. Der Zug war ziemlich voll, aber uns alle einigte die Vorfreude bald diesen Prachtbau mit eigenen Augen zu sehen! Die Nachlassenschaft von unserem großen König Ludwig II. verbindet halt immer noch Herzen auf der ganzen Welt. 

Vor Ort machten wir natürlich auch eine kleine Wanderung in die umgebenden Berge. Lizzy aß zum ersten Mal einen Obazda und sah wilde Kühe. Nach einem kleinen Abstecher beim Mittelalter Markt, fuhren wir beseelt nach Hause in den Ruhrpott.

Das war unsere Reise nach München und ins Königreich Bayern. Falls ihr auch mal dieses Land bereisen wollt, empfehle ich euch wärmsten mit dem Auto von München über die B13 richtung Tegernsee zu fahren. Vorallem die Locals freuen sich über viel Verkehr und Besuch von Isar-Preußen.

“Where’s my shirt?” he shouted, eyes darting around the apartment in search. A breeze of dusty city air swarmed through the windows displacing everything the man had already tossed aside in his frenzy, yet still, there was no shirt.
