Agnieszka is gone. I drove 12 hours to pick her up in deepest New Jersey when she was 3 months old, and she's been my constant companion ever since. I make her breakfast before I make mine, and I look forward to hearing her quiet little "good morning" beeps every day. But now she's just a warm, limp little body that I drove to the vet to hold for the last time after she had a seizure and decided it was time to go.

So. Please hug, scritch, or appreciate your pets extra hard tonight, and have a peanut for the funky chicken who never met someone without telling them she was, without question, a Pretty Bird.

WARSAW, June 14 (Reuters) - Abortion rights supporters marched through several cities in Poland on Wednesday after the death of a pregnant woman whose family believe she could have survived if she had been offered a termination.

Protesters chanted "stop killing us" as they marched through the capital Warsaw towards the health ministry headquarters, some carrying placards that said "We want doctors, not missionaries" and "Hell for women," a common slogan used to convey how the measure affects those who are carrying an unwanted or dangerous pregnancy.

Poland's anti-abortion laws, among the strictest in Europe, have provoked mass protests in recent years and the death of the 33-year-old named as Dorota in May has stoked anti-government sentiment among many liberal Poles ahead of elections due in October or November.

In 2021, the nationalist government of Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki put into effect a constitutional court decision banning terminations of pregnancies with foetal defects, as conservative policies increasingly take root in one of Europe's most devout Catholic countries.

Abortion rights activists have said that there were at least five cases of pregnant women dying whose families came out to the media, blaming the restrictions on abortion for their deaths.

Last month, Dorota died of septic shock in a hospital after her water broke in the 20th week of pregnancy. Her husband said nobody informed them of the option to induce a miscarriage, even though the child had very low chances of survival.

In 2021, a 30-year-old woman in the 22nd week of pregnancy, named Izabela, also died of septic shock after doctors waited for her unborn baby's heart to stop beating.

"We've had enough ... we protested when we found out about the death of Izabela almost two years ago and at the time we shouted 'not one more,'" Agnieszka Czerederecka, a founder of the Women's Strike movement in Warsaw, told Reuters. She added that there were protests in around 80 cities.

Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party leader said that by law women could have abortions if there was any threat to their life or health.

"There is no such issue. It's been made up," he said in response to journalists' questions on Wednesday, accusing critics of the policy of "propaganda" and creating an "imaginary reality."

However, critics say that since the Constitutional Tribunal ruling, doctors have been more reluctant to perform terminations even in such cases.

A poll by IBRiS for private Radio Zet showed this week over 70% of Poles believe the strict abortion rules constitute a potential threat to women's life and health.

"I hope the law will change and I will not be afraid to get pregnant in Poland," said Joanna Jędrasiak, 36, an economist.

"I would like to have children very much, and to experience pregnancy, give birth to a healthy child, without the kind of problems that a few women have had and whom we commemorate here today."

Most of my fics have happy endings, though I really like them with a tinge of uncertainty or bittersweetness.

I don't think I ever had?

9. do you write smut? if so, what kind?

I do write smut! I love writing smut, it's such a good challenge and it makes me happy. I love characterization through smut - and it's such an interesting way to do characterization. That said, sometimes I'm just thirsty and I want to see two characters smash. I'm not pretentious about it. I'm here to have fun and I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to read or write porn.

I write all sort of smut? I do love playing with power dynamics in sex scenes.

10. do you write crossovers? what's the craziest one you've written?

The closest I've written is Comfort, a Solavellan vampire fic, which uses some BtVS lore? It's not crazy tho!

Not that I know of!

Not that I know of either. I think I'd be a little apprehensive.

13. have you ever co-written a fic before?

nope. I'm not sure how i'd do that? writing feels like a solitary thing, even when asking for feedback and input.

The closest is a shared timeline/ideas where my OC interact with another person's OC and both of us wrote in the same continuity.

14. what's your all-time favourite ship?

hmmm. Once I've not written for and probably never will, Spike/Buffy.

if it's writing for, I'd say it's still Solavellan.

15. what's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I think if I want to finish it, I will? I have some old WIPs, but the reason I'm not finishing them is lack of want? Do or do not kinda thing I think.

I've told I've had good pacing. I think I write pretty good smut.

Descriptions? I tend to not want want to describe things. I'm also not great at moving characters through space - he went to the door, he looked out etc? I tend to slip into passive voice when writing characters moving around unless it's combat action or sex.

A few short words like endearments - where the speaker would use a specific term in a different language than what's spoke is fine. Items that are specific and not translatable and would typically be borrowed words in a different language are fine too (kimono. computer. kayak)

📚Do you have a go-to reading spot or do you read everywhere?

At the moment, my go-to spot in the corner of my couch, right next to the coffee table. If I'm reading somewhere outside of my house, I try to find a quiet corner to tuck into.

📙What’s your favorite genre to read, and do you have any recommendations within that genre?

I'm a sucker for magical realism. One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez has been on my TBR list since I read his short story "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings" in high school. Hopefully, I'll get around to reading it soon.

📖What is your favorite book-to-movie adaptation, and why?

Probably Agnieszka Holland's The Secret Garden (1993). The three child actors all give great performances, the soundtrack is a seamless blend of mystery and whimsy, and I appreciate that the film ends with a monologue from Mary. It always bothered me that the novel focused more on Colin towards the end since Mary's the one who found the garden and brought life back to Misselthwaite.

I Ty tak miałeś, nie mów. I dopiero później zrobiło się we mnie takie zadomowienie, stałe, ciągłe uczucie: „Mam Jeremiego”. A prize-winning film sharply critical of the Polish government’s attitude to refugees has opened at cinemas across the country, after being attacked in the run-up to its release by members of the Polish government.

Green Border, a feature film by the celebrated director Agnieszka Holland, won the special jury prize in Venice last month. It tells the story of a Syrian family trying to get to Europe via the Belarus-Poland border in 2021, and the brutal treatment they receive at the hands of Polish border guards.

The justice minister, Zbigniew Ziobro, compared the film to a Nazi propaganda movie “showing Poles as bandits and murderers”, despite admitting he had not watched it. The deputy interior minister, Błażej Poboży, called the film a “disgusting libel” that is “harmful to the Polish state and Poles”.

In a telephone interview, Holland said the venom of the government reaction has taken her by surprise.

“I expected waves of hate and propaganda and denial, but instead of waves we have a tsunami. I didn’t expect that within a few days, three or four times, the ministers of justice, interior, president of the country and numerous others would be attacking me on such a level of hate and aggression,” she said.

Holland said she felt the issue of migration “is one of the most important challenges for the future of Europe and the world”, and she was motivated to make the film by anger over how the government responded to Poland becoming a migration route two years ago.

“I saw that the authorities tried to organise a laboratory of lies and violence, and take political advantage of the misery of people,” she said. She casted for the refugee characters in France and Belgium, among actors who had become refugees.

The film has become a key talking point in an increasingly vitriolic campaign ahead of a parliamentary elections next month. The nationalist ruling coalition, led by the Law and Justice (PiS) party, has focused its campaign on migration, and on the wall it constructed on the border with Belarus to keep out refugees.

Speaking of the film’s positive reception among some Poles, the prime minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, said: “This red carpet is only a preview of the red carpet that PO [the main opposition party] is rolling out for illegal immigrants, a red carpet that threatens to destabilise our homeland.”

Holland said it was not deliberate that the film opened in the weeks before the election, but said she hoped that after watching it viewers would reconsider their views about people stranded at the border.

“It’s different you know, you see some interviews and documentary clips, and then if you see everything with your own eyes and identify with full characters,” she said.

Activist groups say at least 49 people have died and 200 are missing since the crisis began at the border in 2021, and people continue to die at the border even now.

One character in the film is a border guard who is horrified and traumatised by the things he is forced to do and attitudes of his colleagues. “I consider the border guards also as victims, they have been forced to break the law and do things they are not trained for,” said Holland.

Poboży said the government had commissioned “a specially prepared clip that shows the elements that were missing in this film”, praising the work of border guards, and would ask cinemas to show it before screenings of the film. It is not clear whether cinemas will comply with the request.

President Andrzej Duda also criticised the film, suggesting it would have been better to make a film about the Polish response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. He said: “Millions of Poles opened their hearts and welcomed Ukrainians into their homes. How do those people feel today when they see that a renowned director, instead of making a film about Poles opening their hearts … is making a film slandering Poles and Poland?”

The end of the film makes the explicit comparison between the two refugee crises, and the different receptions granted to Ukrainians and to the much smaller number of darker-skinned refugees from Africa and the Middle East received at the border.

The film shows the hellish reality of so-called “pushbacks” in the forest, where Belarusian soldiers force people to keep trying to get into Poland, and Polish border guards ignore their asylum applications and dump them back across the border into Belarus. The Belarusian dictator, Alexander Lukashenko, has been widely accused of facilitating the refugee route through his country in order to put pressure on Poland and the EU.

Green Border is not a subtle film, and it subjects the viewer to numerous scenes of violence that are shown in detail rather than merely implied.

“I decided not to be discreet and to make some kind of parabolic stylistic choices, I wanted people to experience what those people are experiencing who are going though it, both the victims and the soldiers,” said Holland.

CW: Animal endangerment because I'm a fucking moron.

We went out to grab dinner and run an errand. I put my parrot, Nieshka, back in her cage and even moved her "wet food" (aka her fresh veggie chop mix) into her main food bowl because she hadn't been out much today and I usually only give her chop on her playstands.

I guess somewhere in the mix of rearranging food, putting on my jacket, and getting out the door, I forgot to actually CLOSE the cage. We got home and it was dark, and as I went to turn on the light suddenly there's this bird screaming at me. When I flipped on the light I could see she's been on walkabout- there was a lovely circle of poop the entire circuit through the dining/kitchen/living room where she likes to pace in circles. More worrying, there was a bunch by the front door, like she'd sat there for a really long time. (She poops... a lot. She had one wing down when I first saw her. I thought it was broken at first, and my heart just about stopped. Then she tucked it up. I offered her my finger and she tried to step up, but her foot seemed really weak. I picked her up and inspected her for injuries-- didn't feel any broken bones or find any blood or puncture wounds, thankfully. (We have three indoor cats. That's why Nieshka has to be supervised on her evening jogs around the great room. They are all afraid of her, but I know how easily fear can turn to attack, or even just to 'I wonder if bird tastes good?' so they don't interact.)

As I was holding her, she seemed to get more strength in the leg/foot. I set her down on her cagetop stand and she went for her food immediately, then drank a bunch as well, also lending to the thought that she'd been down on the floor the whole time.

I think she probably let herself down for walkies a bit after we left, and circumnavigated the main floor until it got dark, at which point she settled somewhere to roost. I suspect that when we pulled up in the driveway she heard me, got startled/excited, and took off, then hit the window and scooted back over by the stairs. She doesn't seem tender when I touch wings/legs/head, and she's not seeming to be any more light sensitive than usual (she's like, 70% eyeball by volume, so she doesn't LOVE having light shined at her), so I am hoping really hard that she didn't give herself a concussion when/if she hit the window.

Meanwhile, I've got her in a small, dark, warm hospital cage (her airline carrier), and she seems puzzled but okay, except for a few wobbles. (To be fair, she is the least graceful bird I have ever met. She's a potato with wings, and has the grace of a rock dropped off an overpass. I debate all the time about clipped wings vs. unclipped, but fall on the side of unclipped because she lands better fully flighted. When I brought her home clipped, she'd drop out of the air and skid across the floor if she decided to go for a flight.) If anything is wrong it will have to be vetted tomorrow anyway, because there's not a single emergency vet in the entire DC area that treats birds.

I'm aware every time I hold her that birds aren't domesticated. Yes, she's handraised, and obviously tame, but essentially she's bonded to me as part of her flock. This is, at heart, a beautiful little wild creature that lets me kiss her head and tickle her toes and speak to her in a language she mimics because I'm too dumb to learn to speak hers. As a bird, she's not what one would call "majestic"-- she's short, round, and only vaguely aerodynamic in the sense that she has wings and her head is smaller than her belly. But as a companion, she's a pink and purple toddler with problem solving skills and a mind of her own, and she chooses to be my friend, in whatever capacity she recognizes that relationship. That's amazing to me. I signed on for 20-40 years of her stomping her feet and screaming when she's happy and pooping on me, and I'd pretty much never forgive myself if my stupid, stupid inattention meant that she got injured.

Which is why it's midnight, and I'm still awake and watching her. She seems fine, just a little upset and maybe slightly wobbly still. She stepped up from finger to finger (meaning she had to use both feet), she ate more, and she would like OUT of the tiny dark box, please.

I'm rambling. This is all just a really longwinded way of saying I forgot to close my bird's cage when I left the house, and I think she might have a mild concussion but I have no way to have her looked at right now, and I feel like the worst pet owner in the world. (Which my cat, Loki, would like to confirm, because I held him down and made him take a laxative earlier. I am clearly a monster.)

Projekt "Czy pies, czy wydra?" jest projektem społecznym, interdyscyplinarnym, zrealizowanym we współpracy z dziećmi z klas I-III ze Społecznej Szkoły Podstawowej Integracyjnej nr 100 „Jaskółka” w Warszawie. Obejmuje cykl ponad 40 kolaży głównie fotograficzno-rysunkowych przedstawiających nowe gatunki, w tym hybrydy, według wyobrażeń dzieci opartych o dźwięk. Po odsłuchaniu przygotowanego wcześniej dla celów projektu kolażu dźwiękowego imitującego odgłosy, jakie mogłaby wydawać niezidentyfikowana istota, dzieci utrwalały swoje wyobrażenia wybraną przez siebie techniką (ołówki, kredki, flamastry, farby, plastelina), a następnie prace te zostały osadzone przeze mnie w rzeczywistości „realnej” prac fotograficznych. Realizacja została rozpoczęta w drugiej połowie 2020 r. w systemie zdalnym, a następnie była kontynuowana również w systemie stacjonarnym. Idea projektu została oparta na konkluzji pracy pt. "The Psychology and Content of Dreaming in Africa" autorstwa Augustine Nwoye, według której w zasadniczym nurcie psychologii zachodniej ludzie są uznawani za wyłączne źródło swoich marzeń sennych i snów, tym samym są w tym zakresie autonomiczni, natomiast afrykańska perspektywa (kulturowa) wykracza poza ten paradygmat – jednostka może odgrywać rolę „medium” tj. na podstawie impulsu od osoby trzeciej może śnić dla innych. Wzajemna inspiracja, oddziaływanie i wspólna praca twórcza stanowią podstawę projektu, nie bez znaczenia jest również rzeczywistość ostatnich lat, w tym między innymi jej hybrydalność. W pracy następuje wyraźne zderzenie dziecięcego rozmachu twórczego z zachowawczym działaniem dorosłego, konfrontacja tych dwóch podejść stanowi jeden z tematów projektu.

W świecie stworzonym we współpracy z dziećmi każdy nowy gatunek i hybryda są mile widziane.

Projekt zrealizowany we współpracy ze Społeczną Szkołą Podstawową Integracyjną nr 100 „Jaskółka” w Warszawie. Podziękowania dla dzieci i rodziców uczestniczących w projekcie.

WRACA SPRAWA: „Niemcy powinno się bombardować co 50 lat, bez podania przyczyny”. Jest śledztwo ws. słów radnego PiS !!

Po decyzji sądu, prokuratura w Radomiu wszczęła śledztwo ws. wypowiedzi radnego PiS z tego miasta, który w wywiadzie dla lokalnej rozgłośni radiowej, powołując się na wypowiedź Winstona Churchilla, stwierdził, że „Niemcy powinno się bombardować co 50 lat, bez podania przyczyny”.

Na początku roku radomska prokuratura odmówiła wszczęcia śledztwa ws. wypowiedzi radnego PiS Dariusza Wójcika. Śledczy tłumaczyli to „brakiem znamion czynu zabronionego”.

Od decyzji tej zażalenie do sądu złożył jednak Ośrodek Monitorowania Zachowań Rasistowskich i Ksenofobicznych, który już wcześniej uznał wypowiedź radnego za nawoływanie do popełnienia przestępstwa czy do nienawiści wobec narodu niemieckiego.

Jak poinformowała PAP rzeczniczka Prokuratury Okręgowej w Radomiu Agnieszka Borkowska, we wrześniu miejscowy sąd, rozpatrując to zażalenie, uchylił decyzję prokuratury, uznając, że była ona przedwczesna i postępowanie wymaga uzupełnienia.

„W związku z tym zostało wszczęte śledztwo. Zgodnie z zaleceniami sądu, będzie uzupełniany materiał dowodowy i dopiero po jego skompletowaniu i przeanalizowaniu zostanie podjęta merytoryczna decyzja” – powiedziała rzeczniczka.

Borkowska wyjaśniła, że śledczy będą ustalać, czy faktycznie autorem słów: „Niemcy powinno się bombardować co 50 lat, bez podania przyczyny” był były premier Wielkiej Brytanii Winston Churchill, jak to wskazywał radny PiS, czy też przypisana brytyjskiemu politykowi wypowiedź w rzeczywistości stanowiła własne zdanie Wójcika.

„Zadaniem prokuratury będzie odnalezienie źródła historycznego tej wypowiedzi. Będziemy ustalać, czy faktycznie kiedyś taka wypowiedź Churchilla była gdzieś zawarta, czy może jest to jednak stwierdzenie autorstwa radnego Wójcika” – powiedziała rzeczniczka. Dodała, że śledczy rozważają też powołanie biegłego z zakresu językoznawstwa.

17 listopada ub. roku radny PiS Dariusz Wójcik udzielił wywiadu lokalnej rozgłośni radiowej. Oprócz wątków dotyczących Radomia w rozmowie poruszono także kwestię wprowadzenia w budżecie UE mechanizmu „pieniądze za praworządność”. Wójcik krytycznie odniósł się do tego pomysłu, twierdząc, że „nie możemy sobie pozwolić na to, żeby UE decydowała o tym, jak będą w Polsce funkcjonowały sądy, jak będzie funkcjonowało prawo, które będzie chroniło życie”.

Jak zaznaczył, „najwięcej do powiedzenia mają ci, którzy zrobili najwięcej krzywdy naszemu krajowi, czyli Niemcy”. „Pamiętamy wojnę i to co zrobili z Polską, i oni teraz będą nas uczyli praworządności? Jest to śmieszne. Ja zgadzam się z tym, co powiedział kiedyś Churchill, że Niemcy powinno się bombardować co 50 lat, bez podania przyczyny” – powiedział Wójcik. Dodał, że „Niemcy to kraj, który nigdy nie nauczy się, to jest kraj, który nigdy nie będzie pokorny”.

Oburzony wypowiedzą radnego prezes Ośrodka Monitorowania Zachowań Rasistowskich i Ksenofobicznych złożył w tej sprawie doniesienie do prokuratury. Jego zdaniem wypowiedź radomskiego radnego stanowiła nawoływanie do nienawiści na tle różnic narodowościowych wobec narodu niemieckiego oraz nawoływania do przeprowadzenia prewencyjnych nalotów bombowych i grożenia takimi działaniami wobec narodu niemieckiego.

Po wstępnym zbadaniu sprawy Prokuratura Rejonowa Radom-Wschód odmówiła jednak wszczęcia śledztwa. W ocenie śledczych radomski radny swoimi wypowiedziami nie nawoływał do ataku na Niemcy. Prokuratura uznała, że jego wypowiedź może być oceniana wyłącznie jako wyraz jego prywatnych poglądów. „Ocena tych poglądów nie może być dokonywana na gruncie postępowania karnego, bowiem mieści się ona w granicach swobody wypowiedzi zagwarantowanej w polskim porządku prawnym” – uznali śledczy.

But she had business to do. She scratched Elena’s ears once and headed downstairs to pick out her clothes from the laundry machine. She hadn’t bothered to wear her slippers. Her building was old, and the elevator hadn’t been repaired. It was rumoured that they’d had a set of dryers once, but she had no idea when that was. She’d long ago invested in a clothesline.

She picked a basket of her clothes and hauled them upstairs. She felt the tendrils of autumn snake around her ankles as she did so – it was close to harvest day somewhere else. It was close to home, with pies, zhurek, and stewed apples. Sunlight had dripped through the cracks of the old building – and the thing about autumn was that the sun didn’t discriminate. Everything had the same golden hue, that made you dream of another lifetime centuries ago, in some other country – where the sun had fallen on your hair in the same way as you picked the laundry.

Agnieszka really was feeling awful, wasn’t she? When she returned to her apartment, she remedied that by performing some cantrips to put the tea on boil. Crossed her kitchen and went to the balcony in her bedroom, where her clothesline swayed with the wind.

She watched over the city, feeling the irresistible tug of another time – clotheslines, balconies, a city overrun by the plague, and she was all alone. She was sure a version of her had seen this story play out a long time ago. But that didn’t make it any easier.

Her phone tinkled. She frowned, putting her basket down.
