Merdinger's compositions depict her childhood being spent in a refugee camp in Kirgizstan, USSR during World War II; these memories resurface in her paintings as conceptual, organic forms, which, coupled with the scale of the works, allows them to appear as large and striking as they would have been to a child. The abstraction of the ground behind the natural forms also lends the works a dreamlike quality and removes them from reality. Sue experimented with a host of mediums, until she found her preferred mode of expression in acrylic and charcoal on canvas, linen, or Arches Cover paper. While working, Sue retains the formal elements of her medium, but frees them from artistic logic in order to embrace the vision in her mind’s eye. "I am an abstract painter, passionate about creating joyful and straightforward compositions. I experimented with all kinds of materials and substrates, including cement, resin, oil paint, and encaustic, before deciding to work exclusively in acrylic and charcoal on canvas, linen, or Arches Cover paper.
