Who is this?

The King in the North's direwolf was the most battle hardened of the Stark direwolves. He took part in multiple campaigns in the south at Robb's side causing terror and mayhem against enemy forces.

As such, his Intimidate keyword alludes to the fact that whenever Grey Wind was able to get close enough to enemy horses, they would become wild with fear and useless to their riders (kneeling them out).

His main ability to insta-kill any weak characters allows you to clear the path for your military challenges to kill more expensive targets later. Grey Wind is never reported to have killed any named characters while on campaign but he definitely kills enough chuds to spread anarchy on the battlefield. As you can see, his ability becomes more useful when Robb is around and he is able to kill stronger targets. The synergy between the Stark children and their direwolves is quite common (although not mandatory). An interesting use for his ability is to use it on one of your own characters to trigger Robb's standing ability. This reminds me of when Robb sicked Grey Wind on the defiant Greatjon which resulted in Robb rallying loyal supporters to his cause in times of need.

Who is this?

Benjen Stark is the younger brother of the “original main character” Eddard Stark. While his older brothers were fostered with other Houses, Benjen became very close with his sister, Lyanna. During Robert’s Rebellion, he remained in the North as the Stark in Winterfell.

Following the war, Benjen decided to join the order of the Night’s Watch to help guard the realms of men although the reason why he actually decided to take the black after the Stark loses during the war has not been firmly stated.

Benjen rose the ranks quickly to become the First Ranger of the Night’s Watch. After escorting his nephew Jon Snow to the Wall, Benjen lead a ranging beyond the Wall to find some missing brothers. He has not been seen since.

Icons

As a Ranger, having a Military (red) Icon is standard as it is their role to fight and range for the Night’s Watch against all threats. Power (blue) Icons on Rangers is not uncommon but in Benjen’s case it is for his position as First Ranger and his political advantage of being the brother of the Warden of the North. Benjen was sent to Winterfell at the beginning of the series to speak with Robert Baratheon when the King visited the North to ask for support and to remind him of the struggles of the order.

Abilities

As First Ranger, Benjen's main ability benefits all rangers in play. None of them can be sneaked up on which allows them to defend the Wall with ease which is exactly what is needed. His second ability is a little more curious. If Benjen is killed, he grants the Night's Watch additional power and instead of staying dead, he is reshuffled into your deck so he can be brought back again...someday.

Since his disappearance beyond the Wall, the post of First Ranger has been reserved for his return. This false hope impedes the Watch's command structure as several rangers have filled the role of Acting First Ranger. By accepting his death, they'll be able to move on but the Watch will benefit from his unlikely return aswell.

Prologue

Intro

In 2014, Fantasy Flight Games announced that they would be re-releasing the Game of Thrones: Living Card Game as a 2nd edition (2.0). To my dismay, this made all my late 1st edition purchases obsolete. However, when I read Nate French’s open letter to the fandom I was surprisingly happy that I could join in with something new and fresh.

I joined the London meta (The Crosse Keys Sellswords) in January 2016 and have become a regular member of the bi-weekly meet-ups in the city. I’ve attended numerous tournaments from game night kits to the UK Nationals. I can’t say I’m any good but I do try!

The History

After I finished reading A Song of Ice & Fire in 2011, I felt I had no choice but to read it all again and then again...and then again. I was so captivated every time I picked up the books that I wanted to uncover all the Easter eggs in the text and pin point who were the focal points of this momentous story. Sure, you could say its the Point-of-View characters because we get to see this amazing world through their hearts and minds. But then you get to meet even more amazing characters whose eyes we don’t get a glimpse through but make an even bigger impact on those around them.

With each subsequent re-read, I made copious amounts of notes and an extensive amount of spreadsheets just to capture as much data as I could to find a glimpse of an answer to my initial vague question.

I’ve added content to Westeros.org’ Wiki, edited character entries on Tower of the Hand, taken part in the Vassals of Kingsgrave Great Re-Read project, cast judgement on the Supreme Court of Westeros, collaborated with the infamous (yet noble) Ertac Altinoz’ Game of Thrones fan-art contributions and I also ran the extensive character database, weirwood-net.com (RIP)

How Does This Blog Relate to Game of Thrones LCG

I consider myself a stalwart Nedly player because I like to see decks and the cards within them emulating aspects of my favourite books series. The biggest part for me is the inclusion of the main and minor characters and how their abilities and attributes resemble those of their namesakes in the books.

Going forward, each entry of this tumblr will try to explain (based on my own interpretations) how each of these cards is thematic or could have been more thematic to the source material. This may be what the designers envisioned when creating the cards or it may be just me creating connections and chasing shadows like the raving obsessive I am. I hope you enjoy what’s about to happen.
