I'm going to interrupt my normal posting schedule briefly to discuss naming airplanes. Don't worry, I'll post the regularly scheduled Friday review after this, but first I'm going to talk about naming airplanes.
When I say that I don't mean naming types of airplanes. I mean giving the airplanes names. A lot of airlines do it. Back in the day you had your Clipper This, Flagship That, Star of the Whatsit, so on. Lots of airlines name theirs after places. Aer Lingus names theirs after Irish saints. SAS names their Vikings. FedEx Express gives theirs human names, like Gabriel, Richard, JobEdokat, and Meredith.
The year is 2023 at time of writing. Clipper This, Flagship That, and Star of the Whatsit are now all relics of a distant past where a plane ticket cost more than some cars and airports sold life insurance at kiosks. That age is long past. Delta, United, American...all cowards, their airplanes long unnamed. Though the practice is alive and well elsewhere, for some reason it has largely gone dormant in the United States. There are few exceptions, but there are exceptions, and there is one in particular which stands out from the rest. Just one carrier on a mission and their 289 individually named flying machines.
I would like to present you with a curated selection of things which jetBlue has named their airplanes. There are many more - 289, to be specific. Take a look through them all if you care to. But this is a list of my favorites. Just a bit of appreciation for a true titan of aircraft-naming in an era where the art seems all but lost.
Roses Are Red, This Plane is Blue (N3104J)
Aruba, Jamaica, Blue I Wanna Take Ya (N2016J)
Blue's That Girl? (N997JL)
Don't Hate Me 'Cause I'm Bluetiful (N996JL)
Don't Mind If I Blue (N971JL)
Blue Kid On The Block (N913JB)
1. Fly JetBlue 2. Repeat Step 1 (N807JB)
Shantay, Blue Stay (N794JB)
#Follow @JetBlue (N334JB)
Enough about me...let's talk about blue (N712JB)
Big blue people seater (N705JB)
Bippity, Boppity, Blue (N565JB)
Blue-yah! (N187JB)
Badda Bing Badda Blue (N534JB)
FuhgeddaBlueDit (N3113J)
Boogie Woogie Bluegle Boy (N3062J)
My Other Ride is a JetBlue A320 (N329JB, an Embraer E190)
My Other Ride is a JetBlue E190 (N793JB, an Airbus A320)
And, my personal favorite:
How's My Flying? Call 1-800-JETBLUE (N715JB)
(Although if you can read that, you're probably too close. Incidentally, 'If You Can Read This, You're Blue Close' is an A320-200 with the registration N729JB.)

Four B-52 Stratofortress bombers designated for the 5ª Bomber Wing of Minot Air Base, North Dakota, landed at Andersen Air Base, Guam, in late January, as part of a Bomber Task Force (BTF) to support strategic deterrent missions aimed at strengthening international order rules based on the Indo-Pacific region.
While deployed in Guam, B-52 operations and support personnel are assigned to the 23º Expeditionary Bomber Squadron. The 23º EBS will integrate alongside the Allies and partners to demonstrate the U.S. commitment to security and stability throughout the region.
Designed to show the U.S. ability to deter, deny and dominate, BTF missions aim to influence and deter the aggression of opponents or competitors.

While in Guam, the bombers will also support the largest multilateral exercise of the Pacific Air Forces, the Cope North. The exercise, scheduled from February 5 to 23, will be co-led by the Australian Royal Air Force (RAAF) and the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF).

Reacting to the arrival of the aircraft, Captain Zachary "Smash" Holmes, arms officer of the 23º EBS, said it was great "finally to have some iron on the ground".
"It's great to finally receive our crews, so we're ready to leave and participate in the mission, as well as prepare our maintenance staff to support where necessary," Holmes said. "We are ready to go."

A sneak peek of the planned Survivorguy Fic
Featuring weird formatting, script-style (for interlude chapters, don't worry, it won't be the whole thing) and lots of neato shit.
Enjoy this while I go reread the SAS survival guide.
Spoilers and unedited rough writing under the cut!
XBCRAFTED VOICEOVER:
“Hello. My name is xBcrafted, otherwise known as Survivorguy. I’m an explorer, an adventurer, and a former soldier. I’ve climbed K2 and crossed Antarctica, and I’ve made it my life’s goal to survive in the harshest environments on earth, to show you what it takes to make it out alive. I have no camera crew. I have no backup. Everything you see is filmed by myself. For the next ten days, I will be stranded in the wilderness. Follow with me, and find out what it takes to be…Survivorguy!”
[The screen blurs to show a montage of xB climbing cliffs and wading across waterfalls, and stuffing a cricket into his mouth. The theme tune plays over a modified title card. It reads: SURVIVORGUY: MEN VS NATURE SPECIAL!]
XBCRAFTED VOICEOVER:
“Tonight on Survivorguy, we’re answering a question many viewers have asked before. We get letters and emails and tweets, and we see you. You’ve seen me surviving alone in the wilderness, and you want to know: what about others? What if you have to take care of other people? Well, tonight, we’re going to find out!”
[The camera cuts to an overhead shot, looking down at three men with their arms folded in an empty room. xB is in the middle, in his usual clothes. Beside him, his brother Hypno, wearing a bandanna and his usual black getup. Keralis stands to the left, wearing his pilot’s uniform.]
XBCRAFTED VOICEOVER:
“Tonight, I’ll be trying to survive in the brutal and unforgiving Canadian wilderness, with two guys who barely have any survival experience at all.”
[The screen cuts to a shot of Keralis at the controls of a plane, directing it to taxi; it cuts to another shot of a completely different airplane, rolling down the taxiway.]
[NOTE FROM KERALIS: THAT IS AN AIRBUS A320 I WAS FLYING A 767 WHO DID THIS????]
XBCRAFTED VOICEOVER:
“This is my partner Keralis, who you might know from the heroic rescue of flight 1515. He’s an accomplished pilot who thinks the best way to start a fire is to pull the switch beside the fireplace. Ex-military, like myself, Keralis had some basic survival training in flight school…several decades ago. Apart from one or two camping trips and one questionable landing, he’s greener than your lawn.”
[The screen cuts to show Hypno at a computer, fiddling around with some code and opening a photo editor to tweak some colours. He glances at the camera, and blinks all three of his eyes, including the one on his cheek, before turning back to his work.]
XBCRAFTED VOICEOVER:
“And this is my brother Hypno. Hypno lives in Fort Lauderdale and is a skilled graphic and website designer. I think we went camping once when we were kids. Other than that, Hypno thinks that ‘roughing it’ is when the hotel wifi is patchy, and he absolutely hates the cold. Seeing as we’re going to the Yukon, this should be…interesting.”

airsLLide No. 866: LN-RCA, Airbus A300B4-120, Scanair, Las Palmas, March 28, 1987.
After only three years of service with the mainline parent SAS Scandinavian Airlines System, the four A300s added to the fleet in 1980 simply turned out to be too big for most of the carrier's intra-European flights. It was deemed better suited for the seasonal holiday charter market instead. Thus, Scanair, the leisure subsidiary of SAS, leased the four A300 widebodies of its parent from spring 1983 to fall 1987 when they were sold on to competitor Conair of Scandinavia.

Embraer celebrates as Brazil joins WTO civil aircraft agreement
Tumblr media
Brazil joined the World Trade Organization's agreement on trade in civil aircraft on Friday, a move that was celebrated by planemaker Embraer (EMBR3.SA) as the pact would ensure tariff-free imports of components from member states.
The Brazilian government, which had applied to join the civil aircraft pact in 2022, said its entry had been approved by the 33 member countries at a meeting in Geneva.
Brazil-based Embraer is the world's third-largest planemaker, behind Boeing (BA.N) and Airbus (AIR.PA), and a global leader in segments such as regional and executive aviation.
"Until now Brazil was the only relevant aircraft producer and original WTO member not to participate in the agreement, while the main competitors of Brazilian aircraft were represented," the Brazilian government said in a statement.

No. 18 - Tibet Airlines
Tibet Airlines is an airline based in Lhasa. Although it’s relatively small, having been founded in 2011, and mostly operates within China, it also flies to Nepal, Thailand, Russia, and Finland with a respectable handful of Airbus aircraft, which are painted like this:
Tumblr media
I think it’s obvious why I’ve chosen Tibet Airlines for this particular point in time, but rainbows aside there are some things to talk about here. I appreciate the fact that despite the entire plane being white none of it is plain white - the logo is placed on the nacelles and the stripes on the wingtips, which keeps it from feeling just white despite mostly being white. The white itself is crisp and matte, feeling like it actively is part of the livery rather than just being there as a matter of routine. It reminds me a bit of SAS’s old belly stripes livery, a similar rainbow-on-white affair which manages to make the white look like another aspect of the livery’s design rather than a soulless Eurowhite base.
(To be fair, while it is, in my opinion, definitely distinct from Eurowhite, it does share more traits in common with a trend in mainland China I call 'Sinowhite'. The long, sweeping lines and wide range of hues in bright, saturated shades are extremely typical of Sinowhite, but I think Tibet Airlines is among the best - if not the best - liveries in this category, so I'll save a teardown of it for another day.)
The gentle swooping motion of the lines and the logo itself create a feeling of movement throughout the body of the plane and I like how the lines terminate directly below the logo at the tail and directly under the cockpit windows at the front. It creates a feeling that evokes a warm yet firm breeze. This is a plane that can soar.
Tumblr media
Look at her, climbing out with such determined purpose. Okay, I can’t pretend the general adorable cobbiness of the A319 isn’t influencing me a little, but the fact is that the place the rainbow lines cut off doesn’t look awkward from any angle you can look at it. Even Kalitta Air’s can get wonky from a certain just-barely-aft wide-angle, and Kalitta Air is a livery I use to illustrate how to do it right.
It’s just overall quite a pretty design, I think, and it never feels like it’s overstaying its welcome.
Tumblr media
I like the font choice in English, and though I wish the text was bigger I sort of don’t think it could be without impinging on some other part of the design. I really appreciate that the airline’s name is written in English, Chinese, and Tibetan. This should be standard for airlines operating in countries where Latin is not the main alphabet. China is better about this than most, but it’s still always nice to see a bilingual or even trilingual plane, especially one which puts the Chinese and Tibetan text front and center instead of banishing it to a subscript under the main wordmark, as is all too common.
Nothing here is reinventing the wheel, but it’s very cleanly done. A clean, thought-out design can make me respect even a livery that’s 90% white.

airsLLide No. 12664: YL-BAL, Avro RJ70, Air Baltic, Geneva, March 8, 1997.
Given the small size of its home state Latvia, Air Baltic started small. It was founded in 1995 through a joint venture of the Latvian Govenrment and SAS Scandinavian Airlines. It began regional scheduled flights with three Saab 340 commuters in November 1995, and in January 1996, its first jets arrived in the form of three Avro RJ70s. The latter were also used on longer flights, such as the seasonal charter for ski tourists vacationing in the French Jura and the Swiss Alps mountains in the picture above.
Just for perspective: Since its early days, Air Baltic has grown pretty steadily: It evolved from the original six aircraft to a current fleet of roughly 50 Airbus A220-300 and a route network that not only covers all of Europe, but also spans as far as Dubai. Air Baltic furthermore offers seasonal and long-time ACMI services and flies a substantial number of its A220s on behalf of airlines such as Eurowings, SAS, or Swiss International, thereby generating quite risk-free revenue.

London City airport expansion given green light
The UK government has approved London City Airport’s plan to increase passenger numbers by almost a third, prompting anger from environmentalists who say it will increase carbon emissions.
The airport was seeking to increase capacity to 9 million passengers a year from 6.5 million by 2031. A document published on the government website on Monday said the following:
The Secretaries of State agree with the Inspectors’ conclusions, and agree with their recommendation. They have decided to grant planning permission, subject to revised conditions that maintain the existing Saturday curfew period.
The decision is one of the first major infrastructure planning decisions taken by the new Labour government elected in July. Since taking office, ministers have promised to streamline planning processes and boost construction across all sectors, but have been forced to cancel some projects due to funding shortfalls.
London City Airport said it welcomed the increase in the passenger cap but was disappointed that the government did not approve the extension of Saturday opening hours, saying it would force airlines to be slower to introduce cleaner and quieter aircraft. A government spokesperson said in a statement:
We are committed to securing the long-term future of the aviation sector in the UK while protecting our environmental obligations.
Environmental think tank Green Alliance said the decision was disappointing and set a worrying precedent for the new government, although a local group said the scrapping of Saturday afternoon flights was a big win for residents.
The plan was originally rejected in July 2023 by Newham Council, which governs the area where the airport is located, due to a number of objections such as the potential impact of the expansion on climate, air quality and noise.
The New Labour government has said it wants to take a “growth focused” approach to the planning system and the decision is likely to test how it handles environmental concerns. The government’s independent watchdog, the Committee on Climate Change, has said airport expansion at present is incompatible with the UK’s goal of achieving net zero by 2050.
While the government has said the airport should retain its existing 24-hour weekend rest period from 12.30 p.m. on Saturday to 12.30 a.m on Sunday, airlines will be able to operate an additional three flights in the mornings until 7 a.m.
The additional three flights will be limited to newer and quieter aircraft such as the Airbus SE A220 and Embraer SA E2.
